After effects CS6 error file cannot be imported - this 'moov' file is damaged or unsupported

Hi there,
I'm working in After Effects CS6 (11.0.2.11)
I imported an AAF that was exported from Avid MC 6.5.2. I colour corrected and graded the sequence using colorista 2 and magic bullet looks and some other native AE FX.
Before exporting I decided to double check something to do with the audio. I imported the same AAF into FCP 7, took a quick look, but decided nothing needed to be done. I tabbed back to AE (which was left open), and upon returning, AE started giving me all these 'damaged or unsupported' errors.
Subsequently, AE will now not import any quicktime movies - even ones I rendered out of after effects earlier in the day (these quicktimes use ProRes422 codecs, animation codecs and other lossless codecs)
I've restarted, re-exported the AAF several times using diff settings, uninstalled perian... but to no success.
Anyone got any good ideas? I've had this happen before, where AE will import an AAF and it works first time no problem. Then something happens when I re-open the project and boom... 'moov' errors. It's really odd and very annoying - esp since it now won't import other normal quicktime movies too - with the animation codec. I have quicktime 7 pro installed and quicktime X on Mountain Lion (OS 10.8.3).

I have the exact same problem on a Mac with 10.8.3 and After Effects from the Adobe CS6 MasterCollection (AE 11.0.2.11 (german)): all of a sudden I cannot import any native QuickTime-Movies (ProRes, Animation) or even movies that use e.g. H264 in a QuickTime container. Even projects that worked 2 days ago that contain QuickTime-movies will not open anymore.
This happened 2 days ago without any action from me that I can think of that could have caused this. I did not install any new codecs or plugins, nor was there anything in the apple software update.
What I tried/checked so far (to no avail):
disks are OK,
file permissions are OK,
no Firewall is blocking anything,
deleted AE-prefs,
removed all 3rd-party plugins,
removed all 3rd-party codecs.
Edit: I did some further poking around, and it turns out that after deleting or resetting file permissions of the folder "~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects" AE will briefly allow you to open an existing project that contains QT-movies. If you then try to import any QT-movie you get the error message -- and after that you cannot open the project again.
This is really bad -- AE is basically unusable right now.
P.S.: The (german) error-message is this: "After Effects Fehler: Die Datei "filname.mov" kann nicht importiert werden: Datei "MooV" ist entweder beschädigt oder wird nicht unterstützt."

I'm working on a AE project and shut the project down before going to lunch. I come back and open it up and I get this error:

Nothing had changed in my project since earlier today. I've tried to import other .mov's and get the same error, I've also tried to relink the footage.
    Any thoughts?

  • I am trying to import for Sony RAW .mxf files in AE. I get an error message, cannot be imported - this.mxf file is damages or unsupported.

I am on a PC. AE version 12.1.0.168. It is updated.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem. We are working on a feature film shot on Sony F55 in 4K RAW.

Thanks. Now it works in PP and AE.

First, your AE needs to be updated. The current version is 12.2.1.5
If that does not fix the problem let us know.
Second question, are you using the Sony import utility? If not, give that a try. Last question, can you open the files in Premiere Pro? I hope you are not trying to cut a feature film in After Effects.

  • Prores files not recognized... most of the time [message -- file '[file name].mov' cannot be imported – this 'MooV' file is damaged or unsupported.]

Running AE CC 13.2 on iMac with Yosemite 10.10.2
I just started getting an error message when trying to import any number of ProRes 422 (HQ) files.
file ‘[file name].mov’ cannot be imported – this ‘MooV’ file is damaged or unsupported.
This happens approximately 90% of the time. There have been occasions where I can open and view files of this type.
I have gone through the various troubleshooting options here:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2013/08/solutions-for-problems-with-quicktime-files-in -after-effects-cc-12-0-because-of-conflict-with-dvcprohdvideoout-quicktime-component.html
I reinstalled ProApps to no avail.
    Permissions are fine.
Creative Cloud recently updated AE over the past few days. Perhaps this incremental update fouled something up? Last weekend, things worked perfectly fine.
I have also noticed that it takes a lot longer to load AE (since using last weekend). I have used Time Machine to roll the application back to last week's version to see if that helps.
    Any insight is appreciated.

The update last week was just to Adobe Camera RAW and not really AE. It would be unlikely to cause the issues you describe. Have you tried turning your Mac all the way off and then back on again?

  • After Effects CC 2014 Error "error cannot be imported this moov file is damaged or unsupported"

Well, outside of the RAM preview issues that are stopping me from using AE CC 2014, I decided to at least use it to render a AE CC project already composed in CC.
I shut the CC project opened it in CC 2014 (same computer, same drive) and got the moov file error message. It would not recognize any Quicktime PNG movies, etc.
But the old CC does recognize them. Back to CC!

See this for troubleshooting QuickTime issues:
troubleshooting QuickTime errors with After Effects CS5, CS5.5, CS6, and CC
The permissions issue for the preferences folder seems to be the most common culprit recently.

  • After Effects CS6 error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback - any ideas please?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running After Effects CS6 (11.0.4.2) on a MacBook Pro 2.8Ghz with 16GB RAM (Mac OS 10.9.4)
As a test, I created a 3 and a half minute Sequence in Adobe Premiere CS6, and then imported this into After Effects CS6, and placed it on the AE timeline.
This footage involves a couple of 1920x1080p footage movies, some psds and a large number of JPGs exported from two videos arranged as a sequence in two layers in Premiere, one on top of the other. So all in all for a Premiere / After Effects file I'd say it's reasonably heavy.
I then did a RAM Preview with Multiprocessing switched off - the 3 and a half minute sequence loaded into RAM, taking about 1min 30seconds, and played back in realtime at 25fps. This worked fine with 3,4,5 and 6 GB RAM available to other applications in the Memory Preferences. All things considered I think this is quite good. I can make changes, reclick the RAM Preview icon and my changes load into RAM and it previews ok.
My only 'complaint' is how long the RAM Preview takes to load up the whole thing.
I've been reading up on Multiprocessing and decided to try this to see if I can speed up the time it takes my RAM Preview to load up.
So I looked at some recommendations from Adobe and read information on various forums including this one.
My settings in the Memory Preferences are currently
    • 6GB reserved for other applications
    • Reduce cache size when system is low on memory - unticked
    • After Effects Multiprocessing - ticked
    • Installed CPUs (processor cores) - 8
    • CPUs reserved for other applications - 6
    • RAM allocation per background CPU - 3GB
    • Actual CPUs that will be used - 2
This combination takes about 25 seconds to load up my 3 and a half minute sequence which I thought was pretty amazing.
I then pressed the stop button and then the play button - so now just playing the sequence briefly.
And also added a new layer - into the timeline - just a simple shape.
Then I tried a RAM Preview again.
I found I could load up part of the sequence but not load the whole thing into RAM.
I kept trying to get a RAM Preview and got this message
"After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" which seems to prevent RAM Preview from working.
Eventually I quit and restarted After Effects and the problem went away temporarily and then came back when I tried again.
I tried various changes to the Memory Preferences - trying 3GB available for other applications. This gave 13GB of my 16GB RAM to After Effects.
This made it take slightly longer for the After Effects error to appear but it still appeared.
I tried ticking Reduce Cache size in the Memory Prefs  - the After Effects error still appeared, so having read this is supposed to make the issue better I now leave it untucked, but as far as I can see ticked or untucked, it makes no difference, the problem remains.
    I've since tried -
Making 2,3,4,5 and 6 CPUs available for other applications.
Changing the Background RAM allocation per background CPU to 0.75GB, 1GB, 1.5GB, 2GB and 3GB
    Lots of combinations.
But in the end, I always get the "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" error.
It might take less or more time for the message to show up, depending on the combination of settings, but in the end I always got the same message appearing.
And I notice that I can RAM Preview less and less of the timeline. i.e. it becomes more blue than it does green and will load in only a small section of the timeline as opposed to the whole thing.
Reading further, I tried Edit > Purge > Image Cache and Edit > Purge > All Memory but still get the error message.
I also tried ensuring there were no other applications running e.g. Safari or Chrome or Firefox. And certainly not Photoshop or Premiere etc.
Reading even further, I tried two Memory management applications - 'Memory Clean' and 'Purge.'
Neither has had any effect - the After Effects error still appears.
Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
I unticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously. And now the RAM Preview loads the whole 3 and half minute sequence in entirety, taking about 1 and half minutes to do so. It's working as perfectly as if I'd just quit and re-opened the application.
Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
I reticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously.
The chose Edit > Purge > All
And tried a RAM Preview again. It loaded up in 25 seconds, but then, as previously, the error message came.
I tried Edit > Purge All - no effect.
And I tried going into the Media and Disk Cache Preferences and clicked Empty Disk Cache - still the problem remains.
I understand from my reading that After Effects CS6 11.0.2 was intended to fix this issue but I'm on 11.0.4 and as far as I can tell, I still have it - assuming it's the same thing.
As far as I can see, not using Multiprocessing allows me to work without these errors but take a bit longer to load the RAM Preview.
However I'd like to be able to use Multiprocessing as it seems it can potentially speeds things up quite a lot. I realise I could just not use it and AE would work, but I'd rather be able to make use of a feature of the software if possible, especially if it will speed things up and make optimum use of the my computer's hardware.
I've downloaded a trial copy of After Effects CC 2014. I'm still testing it but as far as I can see the RAM Preview error appears in this version of AE as well, but can take bit longer to show up in my experience.
Thanks everyone - if anyone has any thoughts or advice I'd appreciate hearing your opinions.
    Kind regards,
    John

You need to have much more RAM reserved for other applications and more CPUs reserved for other applications. Your current settings are crippling your performance.
    Read these:

After you have adjusted your settings according to the recommendations on those pages, restart your computer and try again.

  • After Effects CS6 Error

When I render using h.264 I get the following error at the very end of the render: "After Effects can't continue. An output module has stopped responding. The file may be damaged or corrupt." I am rendering video game footage in .mp4 format, and I have completed countless renders using the same type of clips and the same settings in the past. My computer is a 6-Core AMD Phenom 2 with 8 GB DDR-3 RAM, 750 GB HDD, and an ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics card, and I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. All drivers are up to date, the latest version of quicktime is installed, and all important windows updates are installed as well.
    Things I have tried already:
Rendering to an external hard drive - failed.
Changing how often after effects purges memory during the render - failed.
Move all files over from my PC (where I do all the editing) to my Mac and render from there - same error message.
Uninstall and reinstall Quicktime - failed.
Import project as opposed to opening it - failed.
What I also find odd is that when I render in parts, it works fine. If I render in two halves everything goes normally, which indicates that it isn't a problem with the clips I'm editing. I also tried rendering in Quicktime format using h.264 compression as opposed to just straight h.264, and that worked fine, which leads me to believe it's not a problem with quicktime. I haven't changed anything regarding new plugins or different footage than I've ever used in the past, and this error just started happening.
Here is a screenshot of my render settings in case you need them, and if it makes any difference, the comp is about 4 minutes long and around 200 layers.

I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks so much!

Thank you for the speedy reply Dave.
It's formatted for windows, but I only rendered onto that as a test to see if the issue was how much space I have on my built in HDD. Typically I just render onto that.

  • Error Message that Files Cannot Be Imported -- Are My Files Lost?

    Hi all --
Here's my sad story: I was importing a whole slew of files from my Canon PowerShot A520, everything appeared to be going swimingly, when iPhoto appeared to freeze up. After a force quit, it became apparent that the pix had never made it into iPhoto. (Oh, by the way, yes I checked the box that deleted them from the camera's memory card, so I don't have the originals to work with here. Never make that mistake again, but that's of no help now, of course. I should have waited until I was certain that the import was successful before I ever messed with the originals, but I digress.)
I thought at first that I had lost all the photos forever, but then I located the pix (they're .jpg files) in Finder (they're in my "pictures" folder). They're apparently on the computer, just not in iPhoto. Somehow they had made it after all, or so I thought.
Here's the bummer, while I can see the pictures just fine in preview, when I tried to import one as a test case into iPhoto I got the following error message and the import was not allowed:
The files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data.
Based on the foregoing, I suspect that the files somehow got corrupted during the initial (aborted) attempt to import them. The file type (.jpeg) seems ok to me. I'm assuming that corruption and "not containing valid data" are roughly synonymous.
So, what I'm wondering is, am I doomed to forever only being able to view these pix in preview or something like that and to never being able to import them into iPhoto and edit and slide show them, etc? Is there nothing I can do to fix whatever's wrong with these photos and get them to successfully import into iPhoto? What about printing, is that possible?
Like I said, these (possibly corrupt?) .jpg files are the only copies I have to work with, since I foolishly deleted the originals from the memory card.
    Is all hope lost?
Any and all help will be appreciated more than you can know.
    Thanks.
Brief Addendum: I just tried to open one of the pix using Graphic Converter and it worked just fine.

    Lori --
What can I say, but thank you, thank you and thank you!
Your timely response saved the day -- it was a little hairy there for a while, with .jpg files all over the desktop, but after resorting to pen and paper (still necessary at times) and recording the numbers of all files, I am now good to go.
The little green star and the bogue award of 10 points doesn't begin to convey how helpful your post, but it's all we're given (plus these words, of course).
To briefly sum up -- This morning (after the debacle last evening that started all this) I was trying to reconcile myself to the fact that my photos were lost for good and that I had only myself to blame.
Now, I have all my photos back (more than 200 hundred, some of them really kind of cool, if I do say so myself) and all are now sitting nicely in iPhoto waiting to be manipulated, edited and otherwise toyed with.
    All thanks to you, Lori.
Not that I wish the heartache I just went through over the last 24 hours on anyone, but I do hope that I get the chance to help someone out as much as I was helped out today. Good Karma and all that.
    This site flat out rules!
    Thanks again.
