After Effects cs6 RAM Preview NOT REAL TIME

So every time I create a new composition at 59.94 fps and insert a video file (.wmv file usually) that is as well at 59.94 fps and I try to RAM Preview just the raw footage it says the same thing every time (the picture). I always change the quality to Quarter and I tried the 33.3% zoom and it doesn't help. I have the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously box checked and I'm using 2 of my 4 CPUs and 6.4 GB of RAM available for AE... Any help?
My Computer specs: I have a Intel Core i5-4440 CPU @ 3.10GHz processor, 8 GB of RAM, A NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760
If you need any other information please let me know and I'll give it to you. Thanks.

Are you doing a RAM to preview or just pressing the spacebar? Are you new to aftereffects?

  • Black magic and Adobe After effect cs6 Ram Preview not real time

    Hello,
I'm on a MAC PRO with the OS 10.6.8 and 8Go Ram, the problem is when i turn on my preview video on the Blackmagic the video monitor is not in real time and the after effect is so slow. When i put it off (computer monitor only) it's ok but i havn't my video monitor of course....and i need it. Is there some tricks for having my black magic (1080 i 50) ON and a RAM Preview in real time ??? ! My drivers Black magic is the 9.5.3 it's the highest driver for MAC OS 10.6.8 + ADOBE CS6+ FCP7.  Thanks for the read. ( i tried update adobe, change qt library, change aspect ratio, pixel, preview ram settings, change drivers black magic and other but nothing work )

What is the color bit depth of your project? (8, 16 or 32?) Have you changed that recently, or have you changed the frame rate or frame size of your comp?
Performance with video preview to an external monitor is almost always related to the pure bandwidth requirements of the frames you're sending to it. If the frames require more memory, it may be slower. Frame size, frame rate, and color bit depth all affect the memory requirements of the frames.
If none of those parameters has changed, troubleshoot the general performance of your machine. If there are other processes (look in Activity Monitor) that are using significant processor and/or memory resources, they may be causing a bottleneck for the frames getting out.

  • After effects cs6 ram preview saying NOT REAL TIME

Every time I try to ram preview something in AE CS6 at 59.94 fps it always previews it at only 11 fps and it says Note: zoom is not 33.3% I have my Composition settings to 59.94 fps and the quality to quarter but nothing helps? Im using 6GB of Ram and have 2 of my 4 CPU's used for it.. is there something I'm missing?

Without proper system info, comp settings, details about your footage etc. nobody can say anything. you are merely throwing us random fragments of info but leaving out the important parts.

  • After Effects will RAM Preview not in real time

Hi, we have 3 adobe After Effects CC up to date here, we are working on a 60fps project in HD 1080. Nothing crazy.
We have 20 Gigas of ram. Mac OS 10.8.5 octo core 2011. ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 Mo. SSD disque crucial m500 256 gigas.
We have a lot of problem with Ram Preview. (on every project)
Everything works fine until, we don't know why, the ram preview is getting not realtime, like 30fps or under.
Sometimes purge memory do the trick but not always.
We need to reboot and it works again, but few minutes.
We made a test on CS5 and it works well realtime, but same problem on CS6.
I tried to delete all the preferences to check but no difference.
We are working with nfs network account but i always redirect disk cache to local disk (set to 20 gigas) and also media conformed cache (database and cache)
We are getting mad, it's really hard to work that way, rebooting each time.
Maybe an issue with Global performance cache introduced in CS6 ?
It's not a footage/project issue because the entire project (a blend of tiff, png, prores422) can be played 120 frames/sec without any problem on after CS5, after CS6 (when it works), CC (when it works).
The problem is when working on project, changing layers, adding effects, After CC starts not be slow and not realtime using Ram Preview.
Also, when we are previewing, a lot of ram is not used, it only uses like 20% of the ram.
We hope for a nice patch very soon ....

60 fps is a very high frame rate not usually supported. If your footage is shot at 60i then it is probably 29.97 fps when converted to progressive video. If the footage is actually 60 fps then you will be better off, and by better off I mean more folks and streaming services will be able to view your video at the proper speed.
So my recommendation is to first determine your audience and then set up your comp appropriately. In all my years in the business I have only delivered one high frame rate project and that was 48 fps.
The other thing I would recommend is to optimize your system for AE. That does not necessarily mean throw all your available ram and processors at the app. There are some good recommendations here: Optimizing After Effects Performance

  • After Effects CS6 RAM preview seems to now be broken after 11.0.2.12 update

Updated to the latest patch for AE CS6 11.0.2.12.
When I hit RAM Preview, my After Effects just locks up, or has an enormous (minutes) delay if I have multi-processor rending turned on. Info says it is working on background processes.
In fact, if I am using Trapcode Form or Particular and multiprocessor turned on it tends to crash. Since upgrading the version I can't even render that start of a particular scene.
Is anyone else having an issue with this? I have tried it on another workstation in the office and it does exactly the same thing.
My machine is an HP Workstation Z800, Windows 7 64bit, 18Gb Ram, Xeon [email protected] and Nvidia Quadro 5000.

Yes. when using Particular 2.1 I find that if  I have MP turned ON  it takes forever to set up the processes. Getting out of the MP mode at that point is difficult but possible. Once MP is off everything renders great.
I have no other issues with any operations in the CS6  suite.
This happens on a HP Z820 with all current  software/drivers.

  • Adobe After Effects CS6 Ram Preview Crash Problem

Hey, Recently my AE cs6 has been crashing when I started to RAM preview and the message that shows up is. "After Effects error: Crash In Progress. last logged message was: <1948><ai.blit.pipe><2> HardwareBlitpipe Disenaged."

  • "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames for playback"

    i7-980x, Win 7 64, 16 gb RAM
I STILL get the "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames for playback" and max allowed memory of 0.4, despite max usable memory listed as 15.99.  Sometimes if I run Premiere Pro, PS, AI, 3-4 QT movies and 5 or six other programs simultaneously, after effects will recognize Premiere Pro and allopw me 5-6 gigs active memory, but this can take an hour or two and is hit and miss.
    VERY FRUSTRATED here.
This happens with and without the firewall turned on.
    Please help

I get this error message when I accidentaly move my CTI (Current Time Indicator) to the end of the composition. If besides also the option "From current time" in the preview panel is checked, After Effects will see that I just marked less than 2 frames namely 1 (from the end frame of my comp to this end frame).
Check therefore where your CTI is positioned!
Also you could have the same problem, if this option "From current time" is not checked, but you have your work areas in- and out-points closer than 2 frames together.
So condensed: Check your CTI and your work area and set the CTI on a previous frame or let your work area start earlier.

  • After Effects will not RAM Preview in real time

Recently I have started working on a new project and can't work on it because my RAM Previews are not in real time anymore. I have only had this problem since I started this project a few days ago. Every other project I have done I've never had this problem before.
I have 10 GB of ram allocated to After Effects, my clips are in 59.94 fps which I have set the composition to as well. When I ram preview it tells me 50.019/59.94 I know what this mean, I understand it's telling me to change my composition's frame rate to 50 frames, however if I do this then music plays too slow. Right now my problem is that the clips aren't playing fast enough for me to see if my editing and time syncing is acurate. When I render the video everything is synced up fine but this is making my editing very inconvenient and I would like a fix please. I tried: Clearing my disk and media cache, unchecking "render multiple frames at once", taking off all effects on the clips, using different clips, AND even reinstalling After Effects CS6 but nothing has worked. I really badly need a fix to this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!!

    > The clips are in 59.94 frames, so the composition is in 59.94 frames. If when I upload to the internet it goes down in frame rate so be it.
You are misunderstanding the typical video workflow.
Composition setting are supposed to match the characteristics of the intended output, not necessarily the characteristics of the imported footage. This is how you ensure that what you preview exactly matches what you output and what your viewers will see. Consider, also, that most compositions use assets with many different frame rates, sizes, etc.
    > I do have a large monitor but I've been using this monitor since December and haven't had a problem with it until now.
Great. But you're having a problem now. And it's because of a bottleneck somewhere between your RAM and drawing the pixels to the screen. One more reason that this might be happening is that you're running a GPU-heavy application; note that web browsers can also be GPU hogs these days.

  • RAM Preview in real time with Matrox Mini

I followed this thread with interest. I upgraded from Production Premium CS5 to CS6 last month. I haven't been able to get Realtime RAM playback since. I'm also monitoring using a Matrox mini and am wondering if this is factoring into the problem. I recently replaced my mini because I was losing communication with the box. I did notice, with the box out of the equation, that RAM playback was in realtime. My test comp runs 5 seconds at 29.97 fps, just a photo moving from point a to b to c, with blur, over black. When I try RAM playback, the message I see is: fps 11.xxx (xxx because the frames vary slightly throughout playback)/29.97. Note: Zoom in not 100%. Interesting thing is that when I delete the photo layer and just keep the black, RAM playback seems fine.
I did adjust my RAM allocation a little, to no effect. Here are my specs:
    Computer:
    Windows 7 Professional, SP1
    i7-4930k 3.4 GHz (6 cores, 12 with hyperthreading)
    RAM: 32 GB
    GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 770
    Here are some memory settings:
    Installed RAM: 31.9 GB
RAM for other applications: 6 GB
RAM shared by AE, Premiere, Prelude, Encore, Adobe Media Encoder, Photoshop: 25.9
    Installed CPUs: 12
CPU reserved for other applications: 2
    RAM per CPU: 2 GB
Actual CPUs that will be used: 8
    Preview info:
    Texture memory: 796 MB
    Ray-tracing: GPU
    Open GL
    Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
    Versions: 2/1/2
    Total memory: 1.94 GB
    Shader model: 4.0 or later
    Cuda
    Driver version: 6.0
    Devices: 1 (GeForce GTX 770)
    GeForce GTX 770
Current Usable Memory: 1.68 GB (at application launch)
    Maximum Usable Memory: 2.00 GB
Let me know what else I can tell you. Thanks for any suggestions.

If you disable video preview in After Effects to the Matrox device, does RAM preview run in real time?
In After Effects CS6: Preferences > Video Preview, set Output Device to Computer Monitor Only. Matrox devices may also require you to disable WYSIWYG preview in their control panel.
When video preview is enabled, every frame is transcoded on the fly at display time to the format (dimensions, PAR, frame rate) requested by the device. This requires some memory and processor power and has an impact on performance. If having video preview enabled is in fact contributing to the issue, you can reduce the memory requirements of the frame (and therefore the processing power required) by reducing the RAM preview frame rate or resolution values in the Preview panel, reduce the project color depth, or disable color management in the Project Settings.
Worth noting here that After Effects CC 2014 (13.0) uses Mercury Transmit for video preview, instead of the older QuickTime and DirectShow technologies, and while it is still subject to the limitations above it provides better performance.

  • After Effects unrender RAM preview after stop playing it.

Hi! We have 5 workstations running After Effects CS6 on different computers, from HP z820, HP z800, and also on OSX Mac Pro, all of them with or AJA cards or BlackMagic Studio cards. On all of these stations, which they have no less than 24 GB or RAM, and working with 30 Seconds ads, so we have more than enough RAM to keep previews on RAM, they play fine once rendered to RAM, but we observe that most of the times, after hitting stop, and even without doing anything else, the green line is gone in a heartbeat, in some areas of the spot, this gets even worse if we use multiprocessing rendering, in which case, it always vanishes after playing and hitting stop. Without using the multiprocessing, it happens less often, and if we turn off the video monitoring with the AJA or Decklink cards, it happens even less often....  this is happening in several computers we use, and I find hard to believe that we are the only people with this problem? since I have not seen any other reports of this...  anyone?
    Thanks

Other than the AJA and Blackmagic cards, have you added anything to the systems' hardware?
No, but not sure if the video card...  I can, like I said before, load to RAM and play fine source footage, it never loses the green line...
    What plugins have you added?
Many, but it happens right now on what I'm working on, and I have no plugins in use, only 4 layers with alpha coming from MAX which I'm comping together.
What codec packs have you added?
How can this be relevant? It happens with any format, on once rendesred to RAM, it has no codec, its the internal AE format. It happens with any kind of source.
At what point in the complexity of the comps does this start happening? Is it number of layers or number of precomps in use?
Well, right now is happening with something extremelly simple, just 4 layers from a 3D render and nothing on it.... I render to ram, it plays, I stop... green line vanishes....
Have you seen this happen before or just in this version of AE?
I have seen this for years... just never really paid much attention to it becuase never considered AE very good at it, but CS6 on of the sales points is how much better caching is... and its not in our case..
As a side note: this is a user-to-user forum. Granted, we are often blessed by the presence of Adobe employees, but it's not guaranteed. There are official tech support channels and an official bug report page that you can use to make sure this is seen by an actual Adobe person.
Thanks! I will report on the official channel once I have something I can reproduce on demand on how to make the program to fail.

  • Preview not real time again

    Hello,
1st of all - sry for my english.
I spend a night searching various forums, but could not find clear answer.
my client just bought HP Z820 series workstion:
    2 x Xeon E5-2620 v2 2.10Ghz
    32Gb RAM
256Gb SSD( system and AE cashe disk)
    1TB 7200rpm drive
    Quadro K2000 vga
AE does not play realtime preview. Always blinking red "Not real time".
i would ask - that is normal for mashine with such configuration?
    thanks.
PS: He have CS6, up to date (today).

    Hi,
Not sure if this will help, but I have an issue playing back on two of my MAC workstations, even through RAM preview, if I have colour profiles enabled. When working on the MAC, I set the project to 8bit, no colour management. All the colour work is done on another PC. Once again, I have not even discussed this on the forums, I just assumed the MAC had isues of its own, and this was my work-around. If you need to get urgent playbacks for your client (and colour is not an issue yet) maybe try that?

  • After Effects Error: RAM preview needs 2 or more frames to playback

I keep getting this error message on a Windows 7 64bit system with 12GB of RAM. I have tried rebooting and re-installing the application and After Effects still gives me this error message when I press '0' to perform a RAM preview
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Canon PowerShot SX20IS
I would suspect that is the problem.... From what I gather, it uses H.264 compression inside MOVs, but it may use an unusual, non-standard profile and thus throw off AE. Can you check these settings in the extended info in the Quicktime Player? would help to know some more details. If you have Quicktime Pro, it may be enough to re-export the clip from there. Using identical settings, this should go pretty fast and not cause any changes in quality, but doing so may fix little annoyances commonlyy associated with such formats like open gaps or invalid timecode markers. If that doesn't help, then I guess it's time to run it through SUPER©, ffmpeg etc. to get workable converted files...

  • After effects cc RAM preview problem

I recently bought a new rig
    i7 4790K running at stock
    8gb 1866mhz corsair vengeance pro ram 2x4gb
    EVGA GTX 770 2gb superclocked
    WD Black 1TB 7200rpm
    Samsung 840 Pro 128gb
    Asus Z97-PRO motherboard
I run AE and open a file and import my clip (59.94fps) and add twixtor and then hit ram preview to see if all is good and it either takes a little bit longer than it should
or it would say "Rendering frame switching to foreground" When this happens all seems ok but after the preview I can not scroll through the timeline without lag and pixelation again like as if I havnt hit the ram preview. So it would have the green bar above the clips showing for the ram preview but once the preview is over I can scroll through the timeline for a second then the green bar goes away. I know that the pixelation is due to adaptive resolution
but I have tried changing that to "fast draft" and the pixelation stops but still struggle to view in timeline. I have the preview resolution set to third or quarter.
I thought that getting higher clocked ram would solve the problem atleast a little more. But not to much. So my main question is what am I doing wrong? Or how can I correctly setup AE or my computer to handle this?
The main clip is actually 200fps but I go to File>Interperate footage>Main>Conform to framerate
Changing it from 200fps to 59.94.
My main frustration is I see videos of the kinds of clips I'm editing posted by kids that edited them and I think theres no way they have a pc as expensive as mine that would allow them to edit these clips. So Its gotta be something I'm doing wrong.
Thank you to anyone that helps so much!

Well, for starters, turn off MP rendering. That warning during RAM previews is a clear indication that you are using it and well, with just 8GB RAM it doesn't exactly make sense. The rest is too vague since you haven't provided any proper details about your source file, but suffice it to say that temporal mangling of any kind can have weird effects, even more so if your source files are compressed. Therefore the pertinent thing to do first would be to convert your file to an uncompressed intermediate format, including conforming it to your target framerate. In addition you may simply consider not using any fast previews or the disk cache at all. It is known to be flaky with temporal plug-ins. set your comp to Final quality to enforce software mode rendering.

  • After effects slow ram preview hold for 4 seconds before starting

Hi I have upgraded from After effects CS5.5 to CC 2014 , and I notices that when I want to make Ram view by hitting 0 num pad key , it pauses for 3 or 4 seconds before it start caching , and it become really annoying if you want to ram preview every 1 min , I tried playing around with the Preferences /Memory/ Ram reserved for other apps , but no good .
That was not the case in CS 5.5 , is it was starting caching as soon as I hit the 0 key .
I am working on Mac pro workstation , quad core intel xieon 2x 3.2 Ghz Mac Os 10.7.5
    Thanks

I am guessing that you have MP rendering turned on in the preferences. Please turn it off and test again.

  • After Effects CS6 RAM usage

    Hey there,
i have 32 Gb of RAM in my Pc but After Effects only uses 15% when it renders. How can i set it to use up to like 90%?

You also have to realize that After Effects only renders one frame at a time and a HD frame, when compared to 32GB of RAM isn't very big. Memory usage depends entirely on what's going on in your composition and what codec you are using. I'm not saying that 15% is always the best, but it could be for certain projects while a much higher usage may be shown for others. I have found the recommendations that Todd supplied through his link work quite well for just about every situation I've ever run into. It's highly unlikely that you can achieve 90% system resource usage in any more than a very small percentage of your projects.
