After Effects Error "error cannot be imported this moov file is damaged or unsupported"

I'm working on a AE project and shut the project down before going to lunch. I come back and open it up and I get this error:
after effects error cannot be imported this moov file is damaged or unsupported
Nothing had changed in my project since earlier today. I've tried to import other .mov's and get the same error, I've also tried to relink the footage.
Any thoughts?

  • I am trying to import for Sony RAW .mxf files in AE. I get an error message, cannot be imported - this.mxf file is damages or unsupported.

I am on a PC. AE version 12.1.0.168. It is updated.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem. We are working on a feature film shot on Sony F55 in 4K RAW.

Thanks. Now it works in PP and AE.

First, your AE needs to be updated. The current version is 12.2.1.5
If that does not fix the problem let us know.
Second question, are you using the Sony import utility? If not, give that a try. Last question, can you open the files in Premiere Pro? I hope you are not trying to cut a feature film in After Effects.

  • Prores files not recognized... most of the time [message -- file '[file name].mov' cannot be imported – this 'MooV' file is damaged or unsupported.]

Running AE CC 13.2 on iMac with Yosemite 10.10.2
I just started getting an error message when trying to import any number of ProRes 422 (HQ) files.
file ‘[file name].mov’ cannot be imported – this ‘MooV’ file is damaged or unsupported.
This happens approximately 90% of the time. There have been occasions where I can open and view files of this type.
I have gone through the various troubleshooting options here:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2013/08/solutions-for-problems-with-quicktime-files-in -after-effects-cc-12-0-because-of-conflict-with-dvcprohdvideoout-quicktime-component.html
I reinstalled ProApps to no avail.
    Permissions are fine.
Creative Cloud recently updated AE over the past few days. Perhaps this incremental update fouled something up? Last weekend, things worked perfectly fine.
I have also noticed that it takes a lot longer to load AE (since using last weekend). I have used Time Machine to roll the application back to last week's version to see if that helps.
    Any insight is appreciated.

The update last week was just to Adobe Camera RAW and not really AE. It would be unlikely to cause the issues you describe. Have you tried turning your Mac all the way off and then back on again?

  • After effects CS6 error file cannot be imported - this 'moov' file is damaged or unsupported

    Hi there,
    I'm working in After Effects CS6 (11.0.2.11)
I imported an AAF that was exported from Avid MC 6.5.2. I colour corrected and graded the sequence using colorista 2 and magic bullet looks and some other native AE FX.
Before exporting I decided to double check something to do with the audio. I imported the same AAF into FCP 7, took a quick look, but decided nothing needed to be done. I tabbed back to AE (which was left open), and upon returning, AE started giving me all these 'damaged or unsupported' errors.
Subsequently, AE will now not import any quicktime movies - even ones I rendered out of after effects earlier in the day (these quicktimes use ProRes422 codecs, animation codecs and other lossless codecs)
I've restarted, re-exported the AAF several times using diff settings, uninstalled perian... but to no success.
Anyone got any good ideas? I've had this happen before, where AE will import an AAF and it works first time no problem. Then something happens when I re-open the project and boom... 'moov' errors. It's really odd and very annoying - esp since it now won't import other normal quicktime movies too - with the animation codec. I have quicktime 7 pro installed and quicktime X on Mountain Lion (OS 10.8.3).

    System Details: MacPro (OS10.8.3) 2 x 2.93GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon, 24GB RAM, Radeon HD 5870 1GB

I have the exact same problem on a Mac with 10.8.3 and After Effects from the Adobe CS6 MasterCollection (AE 11.0.2.11 (german)): all of a sudden I cannot import any native QuickTime-Movies (ProRes, Animation) or even movies that use e.g. H264 in a QuickTime container. Even projects that worked 2 days ago that contain QuickTime-movies will not open anymore.
This happened 2 days ago without any action from me that I can think of that could have caused this. I did not install any new codecs or plugins, nor was there anything in the apple software update.
What I tried/checked so far (to no avail):
    disks are OK,
    file permissions are OK,
    no Firewall is blocking anything,
    deleted AE-prefs,
    removed all 3rd-party plugins,
    removed all 3rd-party codecs.
Edit: I did some further poking around, and it turns out that after deleting or resetting file permissions of the folder "~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects" AE will briefly allow you to open an existing project that contains QT-movies. If you then try to import any QT-movie you get the error message -- and after that you cannot open the project again.
This is really bad -- AE is basically unusable right now.
P.S.: The (german) error-message is this: "After Effects Fehler: Die Datei "filname.mov" kann nicht importiert werden: Datei "MooV" ist entweder beschädigt oder wird nicht unterstützt."

  • After Effects CC 2014 Error "error cannot be imported this moov file is damaged or unsupported"

Well, outside of the RAM preview issues that are stopping me from using AE CC 2014, I decided to at least use it to render a AE CC project already composed in CC.
I shut the CC project opened it in CC 2014 (same computer, same drive) and got the moov file error message. It would not recognize any Quicktime PNG movies, etc.
But the old CC does recognize them. Back to CC!

See this for troubleshooting QuickTime issues:
troubleshooting QuickTime errors with After Effects CS5, CS5.5, CS6, and CC
The permissions issue for the preferences folder seems to be the most common culprit recently.

  • This 'MooV' file is damaged or unsupported

I know this is a common issue that is happening with a lot of people. I have mov files that show this moov file is damaged or unsupported when I try to play them on after effects. The problem is that it works when I use it on another computer at school that runs CS6. I have gone through many discussions and done what they have said including updating adobe to 11.0.2., duplicating my files and then deleting them. emptying my cache and some others. I just installed adobe on my computer. If there any other ideas that anyone has then I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

You have a CoDec pack on your system and it's making a mess of Quicktime. Remove the CoDec pack, reinstall Quicktime.

  • Error "this moov file is damaged or unsupported"

todd, i've been having this issue with cc14 for a few weeks now on my main system. (windows 8.1, update 1,  48gb ram, gtx 780, intel 3930k cpu) i installed cc14 within a day or two of availability and it behaved as expected. approx 3 weeks ago, i began getting the same errors with all quicktime files, "...error cannot be imported...". i've had an adobe support engineer vpn to my machine to troubleshoot to no avail, i've completely uninstalled then reinstalled quicktime 7.7.5, after effects cc14, tried the permissions fix, and i can't recall what else. i can  open the same .aep projects in cc 12.2.1.5, and everything behaves a-ok.so i've gone back to 12 for all my work.
this is the first time i've had any serious issues moving up to the next version of ae ever, and that goes back to version 4.0. i'm at a loss.
i'll be building a new editing system to replace an aging macpro in the next week, if that install on a fresh system goes without a hitch, i guess i'll back this one up, wipe the boot drive and do new installs of everything.

  • OSX CS6 - Importing any QT - this MooV file is damaged or unsupported

Hi, I'm getting an error message whenever I import a QT of any kind into AE:
doesnt matter what QT compressor it is, it does not work.  I tried this on another machine and it works fine, so the file is not corrupted.  It also will not play in QTX (stalls on "loading movie") and crashes QT7...tried replacing the codecs in library>quicktime with a set from another box that is working fine and it doesnt help...
AE doesnt crash, it just doesnt load any quicktime movies.  Image sequences are fine...
tried the solutions listed here http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2011/02/troubleshooting-quicktime-errors-with-after-ef fects.html with no luck...
need some help with this, im dead in the water
Also this kind of started when I tried to export with a preset ProRes codec and the renders kept crashing...I tried to copy the folder into library and i got an error, so I copied the codecs in.  Then nothing worked...I have some other utilities running (alfred, path finder, ect) but they never caused any problems before :/
Also Also when I open this up in QT7, right before it crashes I get this error:

    Hello Rick,
I am also experiencing these problems for the past two months now with my MAC OS10.8.5 running CC, and now I can no longer use AFTEREFFECTS CC due to this issue.
I have reverted back to CS6, though still get the issue of "Error (04) reading frame from file ... ( 86 ::2 )" which means I have to reset, then I can work for 5-10 minutes, then the error happens again.
Very frustrating! I can see this error is similar across these forums, however no forum thread ends in a solution. Can you please provide an update to what is going on here please and let us know that the problem has been recognised?
Consequently, these issues started around the time I installed DaVinci Resolve on my system, though removing that solftware has not solved the issue (and it is intregal to our workflow here anyway).
    Best,
    Tom

  • Why my previous after effects videos (MP4) cannot be imported as multi-layered composition?

    Hi,
As I go throught your tutorials, I cannot figure out how to edit previous after effect videos. My imported videos can only be imported as footage. Therefore, I cannot edit them in After effects. How can you help?
    Thank you!
    Berthony

Start here. Once you render a video it's a video. If you want to do more with the composition then you have to open the After Effects Project file you used to create the composition. It's the same way with any video editing app. You render the video and it's done. If you want to edit the pieces you have to open the program used to create the edit and edit it again.
Really basic stuff here. You have to go through the baiscs or you will be wasting your time.

  • "This '.mpg' file is damaged or unsupported"

I looked everywhere but i cant find the answer; Every time i try to import a .mpg file, it doesn't work. it says what the title says. then it creates an .xmp file in the folder that the original file was in. I have the full version of after effects cs6 and i cant do anything with it.
-Thanks for any help i get on this

Tell us about your system. You may have a codec pack installed that is fouling things up. There are just too many possible glitches to give you any guidance without knowing something about your system, the version of AE, and the source of the .mpg files.

  • After Effects Crops layer size when importing from Illustrator file

I don't know if this was reported before, but when importing an Illustrator CS3 file with multiple layers as a cropped composition, some of the paths/objects get cropped horizontally - and the cropping is not even on both sides either (not that it makes any better or worse)- it is more cropped on the left side.
I really would love an answer to this because I work mostly in that fashion, and it will be a pain if I lose this feature.
    Thanks in advance,
    Doug

Yes, I made sure of that.
In this specific case every other layer got cropped, independent of the size of the path, for example - in one layer I have the background that did not get clipped, the next has an oval (smaller than the first) - that got cropped; next some text - not cropped following that a cloud shape get's cropped and so on.
Right now I do not have time for doing some tests, but I'll do as soon as possible.
This has been my favourite workflow for client logo animation and I have been craving for new features in this feature such as sub layers becoming pre-comps etc.

  • After Effects CS5 and Sony HDR-SR1 AVCHD (.MTS) File Format

    Hi everyone,
I've just started with After Effects, and I the only video camera I have is an old Sony HDR-SR1 camera, which records in 1080i and uses the AVCHD file format. I've recorded a few videos, in which I proceeded to try and import to After Effects. The program came up with this error: "After Effects error: '0020.MTS' cannot be imported - this '.mts' file is damaged or unsupported." I understand that this error is pretty common, but I do not understand how to fix it. I've already tried the Media Encoder, and the videos that come out are horrible quality videos that are nothing like the videos recorded on the camera. I've also tried Sony's included Picture Motion Browser (I have the latest version) and when I try to convert, the video also comes out horrible quality and always has these annoying lines running across the video. Please help!
    Thanks!

Actually, the AE should recognize the AVCHD footage, since I imported one of my recoedings, which is 1080p MTS to AE, and it worked. Maybe the problem lies in 1080i. I always deinterlace my 1080i files and then import them to AE. You may try to deinterlace your files and then import them to AE.
As for the deinterlacing, you can google or you can give brorsoft mts converter, which I'm using now,  a try. It has a codec for AE and Adobe Premiere, wchich make it easier to import files to AE. Besides, you can convert your 1080i files to MPEG-2 and then import them to AE.

  • After Effects warning: Error with directory?

Okay so recently I was having issues with text layers not displaying properly, and I posted here and found that the solution was to recreate my preferences file. However, since then I have been getting an error while starting AE that says "After Effects warning: Error with directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\Brandon\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\8.0\MediaIO". Is there a way to fix this without returning to old preferences file that gave me the original problem?

And what happens, if you simply delete the error? The directory itself is not that important, as it merely holds presets and caches for Adobe Media encoder based formats (MPEG-2,WMF, etc.). AE should re-create it, if needed. Short of that, check the permissions on the folder as a starting point...
