  • After Effects CS6 crashes, causing my iMac to restart

After Effects CS6 crashes, causing my iMac to restart.
I want to buy AE CS6, so I downloaded the 30-day trial version.
I followed all the instructions to install it properly and followed several tutorials to optimize it for my computer.
    This is what I use:
    iMac 27''
    CPU:
    3,2 GHz Intel Core i3
    memory:
    16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    archive:
    1 TB
    graphics card:
ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
    operating system:
    OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    we are filming with:
    Canon 5D Mark II
    File format:
    QuickTime (.mov)
Based on everything I've read, my iMac has all the system prerequisites to use AE, and all the other programs that I use for video and audio recording and editing ( Final Cut X, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Photoshop CS6, etc. ), work perfectly, run smoothly and never crash.
After Effects CS6 crashes constantly, causing the computer to restart. It seems to run smoothly, then I start a render and it crashes; or I start a color correction with Curves and it crashes. Each and every time the computer restarts by itself.
I've tried rendering smaller portions of video at a time, sometimes it finishes the rendering, sometimes not.
Hope somebody can help me! Thanks.
    Hilary

Your post is not much use to anyone. You are not telling us anything about your operating system, storage locations, output settings and whatever else may be relevant. The magic sauce is all in the details, not a generic assumption that this would be some bug or known issue.

  • After Effects CC 2014.2 Freezing and getting "After Effects[717]: -[NSMenu menuID]: unrecognized selector sent to instance" messages

I’m having this same issue- it’s not crashing constantly but definitely freezes or chugs slowly along.
Getting the "After Effects[717]: -[NSMenu menuID]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x610000263180"
    Thoughts?

    Hmmm.
This thread seemed to find a solution, but you're not going to like it...
I'd recommend being as aggressive as you can with other solutions first, such as fixing permissions problem that impedes start of Adobe applications on the off chance that they help.
This thread on App Nap causing issues would also be worth a look.

  • After Effects and Rotoscoping causes fps loss in info panel

    Hello,
I am pretty new to after effects, so please take it easy on me if this is an easily fixed issue or if I am doing something wrong. Here is my whole process.
I have a canon xl2, shooting in 24p with 2:3 selected. I then import the video from the camera to premiere using capture. This was filmed at 16:9.
In PP I open a new project, I use DV - 24p Widescreen 48khz. I have the time code set to auto detect in capture.
I then import the captured video to after effects. I am trying to get better at rotoscope brush, so this is where the problem is.
I import the file, drag the source to the new composition icon, then double click the layer in the composition.  I select rotobrush and brush the object.
I then select play, which will go thru and play the file, adjusting the rotobrush. As I view the file, my info panel is up and it begins by showing 23.976 (realtime). The preview panel is showing 23.98 fps.
After a few seconds, the rotoscoping fails and the info panel shows my actual fps vs the file fps.  SO in red it shows something like 7.005/23.976 NOT realtime.
I've tried to do some research on this, and I am not sure if everything is set up right.  I have read that its best to work on noninterlaced video in AE, i believe it is seperating.  In interpret footage it is showing under fields and pulldowns area: lower field first and then it is removing pulldown with WWSSW.  Showing a effective framerate of 23.976.  Under frame rate area i have selected [conform to frame rate] and 29.97 is in the window. Under pixel aspect i have widescreen 1.21.
I know this is a huge wall of text, but I'd rather swamp you with info then not have enough.  Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Why the fps drops out so much on the rotoscope? Also note, I am only losing fps after pressing play to have rotoscope find the edges itself.
Thank you for any help on this matter.
    further info:
Running window 7 pro - 64 bit, adobe CS5 production premium. At the moment its the trial version - get my copy in the mail tommorrow.
PC is i7 920 oc'd to 3.6, 6 gigs ram, 7200 rpm HD with 64Mb cache, gtx480 with 1500Mb Vram. Using the latest Nvidia drivers.
I believe I am using OpenGL for rendering, but not positive.

Ok, awesome.  Thanks a ton for taking the time to explain it to me and make sure that I understand the proper way to reference it.
With all this considered, is there any reason why someone would do the traditional rotoscoping vs using the rotobrush to create a matte?
To me it seems like the roto brush pretty much replaces traditional rotoscoping.  If thats the case, wouldn't it almost be considered a new rotoscoping method.
Like in the past, people used to dig holes with shovels and by hand.  Excavating holes this way was hard and took alot of time.
Over the years, technology made it possible to use a backhoe to dig holes, making it super easy. Both methods are excavating, one is just using an easier method.
I guess thats where my confusion came in, I guess the way I look at it, due to never having done the traditional rotoscoping method, I just considered it the same thing.
Anyway, I hope I dont look like a giant *** with my posts.  Cuz anyone willing to take time outta there day to help someone else in a courteous manner deserves all the praise I can give.
    Thanks again.

  • After Effects Audio Output Causes Render To Hang Then "Output Module Failed"

So I have been working on this video for a few weeks now, no special effects just 3D layers and text.
I had set it to render Thursday afternoon and it finished Friday night after I left work.
So today I came into work played the video and I realized I didn't render the audio. (NICE!)
So I reset the render que (didnt change anything but render audio settings) and the render
doesn't even start, it just stays at "Stage: Compressing and Writing" for a few minutes then gives me
the good ole' output module has failed.
Ive already restarted AE, and my comp, I also purged the memory.
Im running windows 7 (64 bit) with 8gb RAM and Intel Core i7-3770S CPU @ 3.10ghz
It is definitely the audio output, I tried rendering without it and it started up just fine.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

just updated to 11.0.2 and still nothing
I click Render and it just says rendering but nothing changes
not even time elapsed or est. remaining
just stays on compressing and writing and my ram used doesnt even start going up

  • After Effects CC 2014 Crashing with Magic Bullet Looks on Mac

    Hi,
I recently installed the upgrade to the latest After Effects CC 2014 v13.0 and found the Magic Bullet Looks now causes After Effects to crash. I'm using MBL v2.5.2
I opened the Activity Monitor and noticed that whenever the crash occurs the Adobe QT32 Server is in a state of (Not Responding)
On a clip I can apply the MBL plugin with no problems and even if I am copying a previously set up version from a previous clip, it applies and renders without trouble. I can click "Edit" on the plugin controls, open up the MBL control window and make all the adjustments I need without any trouble. The issue is when I then click either "Finished" or "Cancel" to go back to After Effects. The program freezes and I get the spinning wheel of death for about ten seconds and the the whole thing, MBL and AE shut down.
    I am running:
    MacBook Pro
    OS 10.9.4
Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i72.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
    Cuda  6.0.54
The footage is Apple Quicktime ProRes HQ
I have Quicktime v10.3 installed and Quicktime Pro v7.6.6
I am at a loss as of how to fix or even work around this. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

There was a bug in MBL on Premiere CC 2014 that was causing crashing and lockups. Red Giant released an update quite quickly that so far seems to have fixed it for me. I know you're talking about AE but maybe there's some common code that was also fixed? As Rick says, have you checked the latest ver of MBL?

  • What is the Best After Effects Version for my Computer?

    Hey I have a Windows 7 with a Pentium (R) Dual Core CPU T4400 @2.20GHz   2.20GHz
RAM 3.00 GB 64bit Oberating System
Display Adapter: Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
What is the best earlier model of After Effects or maybe current for my computer type?
Or what is the best settings for After Effects to run faster for animation?
    Thanks

Unless you plan on using a very old version of After Effects, which will cause a bunch of other problems on Windows 7, you simply need more RAM.  3 GB is barely enough to keep Windows running smoothly, let alone running a RAM-hungry app like AE.  Your first priority is to put more RAM in your computer.

  • Problem with spring effect in After Effects

Whey I'm animating an object from A to B using position, thats fine. But When I add one more keyframe that moves it back to A again (or anywhere else for that matter), my problem appears. The object kind of continue to spring forward in the direction it was heading, before it bounces back again. It's most obvious if I make the A to B movement really quick.
It seems like something After Effect does automatically, cause I have tested it in a bunche of totally clean files with nothing but the object I'm testing it on.
So my question: Where do I tweak these settings?

I guess you are facing the infamous boomrang effect. it's because by default, AE keframes are not linear (you can go to the preferences > general and check the linear option).
So 2 choices for you: either you check the option in the pref and redo your animation, or you can select your animated layer, press P to reveal the position keyframes, select all the keyframes, right clic on one of them and in the context menu select Keyframe interpolattion and in the menu that opens, replace any "bezier" or "autobézier" by linear.

  • My video won't "Render and Replace" in Premiere Pro from linked footage in After Effects

I am using Premiere Pro CC 2014 and After Effects CC 2014.  I can't get the video to "Render and Replace" in Premiere Pro after editing the original in After Effects.  It just freezes on "Analyzing."
In order to see the footage in real time  I have to export it to an mp4 then replace the linked footage.  The footage is 18 minutes long and it takes more than 5 hours to export it.  After I edit the exported version, I have to export it again, which is another 5 hours.  This is taking a really long time.  I would rather edit the "Rendered" version What am I doing wrong?
    Russell

is this just a single clip, or you have the entire 18min loaded in AE as comp? does this happen with new projects and all footage or just some? can you render and replace regular clips that aren't AE comps?  if its just a few clips of the 18min project, can you render previews in premiere?    if its just a few clips, could also render them out in AE and swap them out in premiere instead of using render and replace...   or maybe temporarily disable the ae effects/layers while editing in premiere and then turn them back on when ready to export final render.

  • Dynamically linked After Effects comps causing Premiere to freeze (after latest updates)

Normally in a dynamic link, any changes made in After Effects would be displayed in Premiere within a few seconds. However, after the latest software updates... it now takes 1-2 minutes and the Premiere interface is completely frozen during that time.
    Anybody else having similar issues?
    -Pete

Hi, thanks for the link but I'm having a different issue. My Premiere interface actually freezes and I'm unable to use Premiere for 1-2 minutes.
App Nap is disabled for all Adobe apps and I do frequenly empty my Adobe Media Cache and After Effects disk cache and it doesn't prevent the freezing.
Or sometimes just having a dynamically linked After Effects comp on the timeline slows Premiere down to the point where even scrolling through assets in my project panel is very jerky.

  • Total PC freeze when exporting from After Effects CC

    Hi guys,
I'm having quite a serious problem exporting AFX files (via Media Encoder CC) and also occationaly during RAM previews.
The problem itself is fairly simple. After a varying amount of time my PC will completely freeze and become totally unresponsive. This always seems to happen on more complex scenes involving raytracing, or C4D Lite layers and sometimes just generally complex compositions. I'm forced to restart my computer losing all render progress and any unsaved progress. A couple of times the crashes have totally messed up my AFX, corrupting any open saves and corrrupting my custom panel layouts (very annoying).
I recently upgraded my PC to a fairly beefy spec primarily to cope with complex projects like these. Here are the specs from DxDiag:
    System Information
Time of this report: 8/8/2013, 15:08:15
    Machine name: ALPHA-ONE
    Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.130318-1532)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: To be filled by O.E.M.
System Model: To be filled by O.E.M.
    BIOS: BIOS Date: 01/11/13 16:18:14 Ver: 04.06.05
    Processor: AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor            (8 CPUs), ~4.5GHz
    Memory: 16384MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 8090MB RAM
Page File: 4406MB used, 11773MB available
    Windows Dir: C:\Windows
    DirectX Version: DirectX 11
    DX Setup Parameters: Not found
User DPI Setting: Using System DPI
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)
    DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled
    DxDiag Version: 6.01.7600.16385 32bit Unicode
I did notice after I had upgraded that AFX didn't support my new GFX card (Geforce 760) but I found an article that suggested a work around for this which did allow me to use the 760. I don't know if doing this is known to cause problems with renders? My GFX card has the latest drivers. I've tried disabling and enabling the GPU in AFX but either way the crashes occur. I also tried turning off/on Multicore processing as this has given me grief before. But that made no difference.
My After Effect instalation is also the latest version.
These crashes don't happen in other programs like C4D Lite (when rendering directly inside that program), or when playing recent and demanding games.
I have 16GB of RAM installed but seem to only be able to use 8GB as available memory in AFX, which also shows in the Dxdiag report. I don't think this could be causing total system freezes though and do plan on trying to fix this issue when I get time.
    Thanks for any help!
    -Nick.

It looks like DxDiag DOES realize that you have 16GB installed, but for some reason only 8GB is provided to the OS.
This is very odd.  Since it detects the full 16GB, I doubt that your RAM is faulty/unseated/etc.  If that were the case, it would not be recognized as 16GB.
What CPU and motherboard are you using?  It's possible that a setting in your BIOS is to blame.
I've seen this happen before on computers with integrated graphics.  They will use a portion of your system RAM as video RAM.  But this is typically only 256MB-512MB at most...not a whopping 8GB!
Yeah pretty odd I know. My BIOS only reads 8GB of the RAM (doesnt mention 16GB at all I dont think), Resource Monitor and DXDIAG say 8GB of available memory and 16GB of total memory. I did Memtest 86 for 12 hours last night and whilst it came up with no RAM errors it also only detected half of my RAM anyway.
I decided to do some experimenting today and tested each 8GB stick on its own in DIMM slot A2 (the manual recommends this slot for single sticks of RAM). PC wouldnt boot at all with one of the sticks but would boot with the other. So I've left my PC with that one 8GB stick in now as I suspect the other one could be faulty. I dont know if this is the cause of my orinal problem but I plan on trying to render some of the projects that were freezing my PC before and seeing if I still get those freezes. If I don't then hurray problem solved! If I do then I'm stumped as to what the cause could be.
    Oh and my motherboard/CPU are:
    CPU: AMD Piledriver FX-8 8350 Black Edition 3.50GHz @ 4.60GHz CPU
    Motherboard: Asus 990FX Sabertooth
I agree about the BIOS settings potentially being the problem, I plan on monday to ask the site I bought the bundle from about this and see if I can get replacement RAM and/or advice on whether there's anything specific I can do that would fix this. I tried googling the problem many times but almost every thread I come across is just people who don't realise their 32bit OS cant take more than 4GB of RAM which isn't the issue I'm having.

  • Why does my entire computer freeze while opening or using After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5?

Just built a computer to meet all requirements for Adobe, Autodesk 3ds Max, and UDK, for school.
    Specs;

Graphics Card - EVGA - NVIDIA GeForce GTX480 - DirectX11 - CUDA - OpenCL Support - PhysX Technology - OpenGL 4.1 (so says the box it came in; but if I'm not mistaken I think the command prompt had shown OpenGL 3 or 3.2)
Disc Driver - LG DVD/CD RW... It is an OEM, Windows claims it is updated.
I use an external component - USB Microsoft Wireless Mouse & Keyboard 2000.
I have, as far as software goes...
    Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Adobe Creative Suite 5, student version or what have you.
         - I do have several plugins installed as well for After Effects only.
    Autodesk 3ds Max 2012
-I have several maxscripts as well as a couple plugins for 3ds Max.
    UDK 2-2012 & 3-2012
    NVIDIA PhysX Lab 1.1
    NVIDIA Texture Tools 2
    NVIDIA plugin for Photoshop
    xNormal
    ConTEXT
    UnCodeX
    Quicktime
    AVG Free
    Malwarebytes
    7-Zip
    Java
    Sculptris
As for anything else giving me issues I haven't noticed anything besides a previous Graphics Card wasn't supported very well at all with 3ds Max, it would freeze while using the material editor which was fixed with replacing a GTX550 ti with a more compatible GTX480. Thought maybe the upgrade would also solve the fact that almost everytime I go to start up and/or use After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5 my whole system freezes. Whether or not I'm doing anything, it occasionally happened during "Scrubbing" the timeline, but also during the splash load up screen. Would take the time to wait for several minutes but nothing would change. Hard reboot was needed. After countless hours of searching online I stumbled upon what is called an "Unlock" for Premiere Pro/After Effects to allow accelerated GPU and CUDA cores. Simple procedure, seems as if things go faster... When it is working. But still, I encounter freezes on my entire system. It isn't a crash back to Windows or anytihng. Just a complete freeze on the entire system. I have not extensively used other Adobe programs besides Photoshop quite briefly just so I could open menus and force a freeze within 5 minutes and noticed nothing wrong. Which in AE & PP just running through any of the menu windows can quickly cause a sudden freeze.
note* I have alternated shutting off and turning on OpenGL as well as multiprocessing. Doesn't matter, it really doesn't seem to change much of anything.
Alas, I am absolutely sure, after checking and re-checking 80+ hours over the past 2 weeks that yes, everything is updated as far as each individual program, software or hardware will allow me to update them. I have reinstalled Windows as well as each program up to 3 times, and 1 system (restore?) I had Windows dump everything, started from scratch, backed up nothing. To reinstall everything from scratch, while not installed several "Utilities" or software components from stuff like the Motherboard and its XFAST USB/LAN or whatever, thinking maybe it was cluttering up anything.
Please, if anyone has any ideas upon this and could give me advice, whether you notice any other incompatibilities or anything. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
note* I do not have a wired Keyboard or mouse to disable the USB plugin and attempt that route.. at least not yet, its on my list of things to do. Also, I did run Memtest86+ during a boot and it claims that everything there had passed 100%. I am not "overclocking" anything either. I just wanted something I could work smoothly on, that would have decent rendering capabilities. I used to use my girls' laptop which was an HP with 3GB RAM and never experienced crashes or freezes and I could use AE, PPro, 3ds Max with some lag but not any issues. Rendering took forever on it, but I usually avoided that 'cuz it would start heating up pretty fierce. Saved my rendering for school computers where I could. But either way, now I have this expensive piece and it is getting frustrating that I cannot work on it.
note* Also, incase it does help, I have Windows as well as any major components installed onto the C: drive (aka SSD for my system) while all my secondary software, such as Adobe, Autodesk, etc. are all installed directly to my D: drive (or HDD) And everything is set up to go through Windows Firewall as well.

Thanks all. I have just tried a few things, installing them onto the C drive as you all specified as not being one of them. I can understand it, but at the same time i have a classmate who has their software on a seperate drive and it runs smoothe. I'm on my second GPU in 2 weeks, unless I have terrible luck it seems doubtful being that I can run games and a majority of the software no problem. Through further testing around with a corded mouse and keyboard I've noticed the following...
The computer freezes entirely only when I'm performing a "scrubbing" action or using a mouse. Left clicking, scrolling, or moving it around. Otherwise if I do not use the mouse and I make all my actions, such as "scrubbing" in AE via "Page Up & Down" keys, there's no freeze and it preloads the preview no problem.
"Scrubbing" does not load a preview (the green bar doesn't load at all while scrubbing). But, also noticed no matter how smoothe everything is running in 3ds Max as well as PPro, once I start performing a "scrubbing" action with whatever timeline I use, it will definately freeze my whole computer, Windows and all. Hard reboot is neeed.
With having gone through 2 GPU's, done a full memtest via Windows 7 and Memtest86+, there seems to be no issue with my memory or GPU. Like I said, I've run UDK without an issue. Whether the editor or game. The USB doesn't seem like it's the cause, I've used both wireless as well as wired keyboards/mouse. Still freezes, but now only when using a mouse to "Scrub".
Is it possible my motherboard could be incompatible somewhere? I mean, really.. everything is brand new but 2 weeks of troubleshooting.
And I do plan on trying to run my software off the C drive, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else, like I said, I've seen and used a computer where it all runs off the D drive and it runs perfectly, actually better on his computer than off the C drive at my schools. So if it is an issue would it lie within the fact that I'm using an Nvidia GPU? Considering my classmate is using a AMD/ATI Radeon or something like that.
Again, to those who replied, your shared knowledge is greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • After Effects CS6 (11.0.4) freezes a MacPro (10.9.2-10.9.5) while rendering

    Hi all,
we experience reproducable crashes of After Effects freezing the whole system while rendering.
    AE-Version: 11.0.4 (CS6)
Mac OSX 10.9.2 (on a MacPro 2012 - same Problem on a MacPro 2013 with Mac OSX 10.9.5)
    The Video-Card is a KONA LHi with Hardware-Driver 10.6.
Multiprocessing is turned on and we tried different configurations. (MacPro 2012 has 48GB RAM, MacPro 2013 64GB).
The Media Cache has been released.
Taking a look at the activity monitor I see that the "Adobe QT32 Server" does not respond right after starting After Effects.
That leaded me to the suspicion that some installed Quicktime-Codecs may be the cause.
Throwing away the AJA-Codecs located in "Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/" the Adobe QT32 Server runs fine but then I am unable to open the AE-Project properly.
    Any suggestions are highly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Dankward

    Hi Szalam,
the Codecs installed with the AJA-Driver are the latest so far.
Turning Multiprocessing off seems to help. The AE-Project that I got for testing doesn't crash anymore.
    But rendering takes ages...
    Thanks

  • After Effects Freezes on Rendering, NEED HELP

Hey everyone. So I'm on the verge of tears because After Effects CS5 is having a huge lag in rendering. I recently installed the whole CS5 Master Collection, and I found there was a slight lag in opening it, updating the preferences, and even closing out of the program. But didn't think anything of it. Often times I've gotten hung up on the beach ball of death.
I went for the first time to render things, which an identical comp in AE CS4 rendered out lightening fast, but in CS5 the same comp took about 5 minutes of sitting on the beach ball before it even started rendering and then another 5 minutes of more beach ball fun to finally finish. I'm on a Mac and my system stats are as follows:
Processor: 2x3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 18 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    OSX 10.5.8
    After Effects CS5 10.0.1.19
I thought it was some type of DivX issue, and deleted anything relating to that, but it didn't help. Whatever help anybody could provide as to the culprit would be appreciative. It's got me pretty freaked out...

So it seems like a combination of turning off OpenGL and Multiprocessing seemed to do the trick. Have one or the other on seemed to cause the freeze-ups.
I'd like to ask if this is a problem just isolated to OS X 10.5.8 or not?I've always had Multiprocessing on since CS4, why turn it off now, did having it on to begin with help at all for renders? Now that it's off and OpenGL, will that adversely affect anything i.e. increasing render times etc?
Why have two options available if it's going to lead to problems, and people have to end up turning them off?
For what it's worth, I've included screenshots of my own computer's info and the selections when multi-processing are on in AE CS5.
