After effects manual!

well gotta say i am loving AE CS4 but i thought it would be nice to look through a sort of manual just for reference!
now i have been doing a lot of online tutorials which are fantastic, but sometimes i like to sit down and flick through an actual book, so with nothing to be found, i called adobe and asked them about this to which they replied 'i have to pay for it????'
surely my ears deceive me, surely the nice support lady misunderstood me, i have just paid over a £1000 for this great software and i have to pay EXTRA for a manual???
please someone shed light on this? thanks! :)

Yes, it's true that a printed user guide is not included in the box with After Effects. You can
buy a printed user guide from the Adobe Store.
However, using the printed user guide has many, many disadvantages to using
After Effects Help on the Web and the
After Effects Help and Support Center. The printed book takes a long time to print and manufacture, so the information is already many months out of date compared to the version of Help on the Web. Also, the Help document on the Web contains more than 500 links to other online resources, including free tutorials and online excerpts from other books.
I wrote the printed user guide and
I say that I can't think of a good reason to buy and use it. If you really want a printed book about After Effects to flip through, your money will be better spent on Chris and Trish Meyer's
After Effects Apprentice or the
After Effects CS4 Classroom in a Book. There are other great books about After Effects, but those are the best for getting started.
Here's what the Adobe Store says about the printed user guide; note how even this blurb trying to sell you the printed user guide is saying that you'd be better off using the resources on the Web:

After Effects manual update issue

im using OSX mavericks (version 10.9.1), and it said that i couldn't use it, so i tried to force the update and i got this error
After Effects warning: Could not rename the file 'Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/12.2/Workspaces.10227.1407351516659361.xml' to 'Workspaces.xml'.
i tried the solution where you rename the AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat and forced the update but that didnt work either
this problem doesnt happen on any other applications, just after effects

Set the permissions for the entire Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/12.2 folder to be writable. The problem is that the OS has set the permissions on that folder or elements in it to read-only.

May I also give links for lessons for After Effects?

I have been sharing my experiences with lessons from Dr. Russell Brown and Mr. Richard Harrington as I have been learning Photoshop. I am now learning After Effects. May I also share my experiences on this forum or in messages on the After Effects Help pages as I have done for Photoshop? I do not want to insult anyone by saying that I prefer the lessons of Mr. Andrew Kramer. It is not that I do not find enough from the very nice Adobe manual on the Web. I do! I also find much additional value from the lessons from such others. Is it welcome?

I am the person who writes most of the After Effects manual, and I certainly take no offense at the suggestion that some of Andrew's (or Richard's) tutorials might be better than my pages at communicating certain ideas and techniques. If you have links to share, I say "bring 'em on"! In fact, from this search and this search, you can see that I am happy to include links from Richard and Andrew directly in the After Effects Help document. I would like to include more, but I don't have enough time to watch all of the video tutorials that are out there. If you're volunteering to help out by finding the good tutorials and providing links to them from the relevant pages of Help on the Web... well, for that I (and many others) will be most grateful.
I do ask that you try to find the most relevant pages of the Help document for each tutorial, so that your links are most useful. After Effects composition will no longer populate in Media Encoder.

Hi guys.
I'm pulling my hair out with this recurring issue with Encoder.
Ive been working on a 24 minute or so video and i have made a habit of stopping every couple of minutes to check if Media Encoder will pick up the composition. 2 hours in and its still appearing, but 30 minutes later it no longer appears. No matter how far i back track, I cant make it appear again. This is the 3rd time its happened and with so many hours invested into this, I really don't want to do all that work again.
Do any of you know what causes this issue or better yet, a way to fix it?
Ive tried rendering through After effects manually but the video is always too big and I it never has audio and has choppy slowmo pictures.
In summary, i don't want to do 12 hours of work all over again. Please help.

We can't know anything. You have not provided any system information, no exact version info, no comp settings, no details about footage and effects used and a gigazillion other things like cache settings, AME settings and so on. I don't even know where to stop because so much info is missing....

Mpeg conversion for AFTER EFFECTS

Hey guys
I recently captured some HD video from cam in premier and it will only give me an mpeg file. Unfortunately this file is useless for after effects. What are the best settings i can use to convert this file with out losing quality?

I am running after effets cs4 on a pc. I shot on a Sony HDR FX1 and captured of a little Canon HD camera because the fire wire stopped working on the Sony cam. If there is a way to get this mpeg working in after effects that would be great.

After Effects doesn't recognize OpenGL version

Hello,
I got the newest Nivida driver installed [331.82] with opengl4.3 driver.
After Effects shows that I have OpenGL 2.1.2. [See below screenshot...]
Why is that? Does anyone have similar problem?

I searched whole After Effects Manual for "OpenGL" and there is no word about it . On the other hand, I can see in tutorial http://tv.adobe.com/watch/digital-video-cs6/how-to-optimize-after-effects-cs6-for-high-per formance/?go=12437 that there is OpenGL version 3.0 presented inside of AE info screen.

Novice seeking Adobe After Effects hard copy manual, does it exsist?

I am a Pinnacle Studio 14 Ultimate Collection user, hence novice...I was browsing for more montage templates and came across Revostocks After Effects section. I have been told by this site their templates require Adobe After Effects download to manipulate titles and videos you input. Since I am just a hobbist not a video professional I need more then the tutorial on line to learn this system, hopefully before purchase. I have been told it is complicated but I am hoping they have a user friendly manual for self teaching, anyone aware of how I could obtain this for purchase?

Not really. The help system is seveal thousands of hyperlinked pages. You can obtain Adobe Classroom in a Book series and use the free trial of AE to see if you want to invest. But you can also study many hundreds of reviews and real world case studies for AE to see if you need any of its functions. I have no idea what Pinacle is but you probably have everything you nedd in it for whatever it's supposed to do. AE is a special effects, composing and simulation application and it's expensive and it';s worth every penny if you need it. If you don't really need it, AE is just an expensive toy.

Media Encoder CC not using GPU acceleration for After Effects CC raytrace comp

I created a simple scene in After Effects that's using the raytracer engine... I also have GPU enabled in the raytracer settings for After Effects.
When I render the scene in After Effects using the built-in Render Queue, it only takes 10 minutes to render the scene.
But when I export the scene to Adobe Media Encoder, it indicates it will take 13 hours to render the same scene.
So clearly After Effects is using GPU accelleration but for some reason Media Encoder is not.
I should also point out that my GeForce GTX 660 Ti card isn't officially supported and I had to manually add it into the list of supported cards in:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CC\Support Files\raytracer_supported_cards.txt
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Media Encoder CC\cuda_supported_cards.txt
While it's not officially supported, it's weird that After Effects has no problem with it yet Adobe Media Encoder does...
I also updated After Effects to 12.1 and AME to 7.1 as well as set AME settings to use CUDA but it didn't make a difference.
Any ideas?

That is normal behavior.
The "headless" version of After Effects that is called to render frames for Adobe Media Encoder (or for Premiere Pro) using Dynamic Link does not use the GPU for acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer.
If you are rendering heavy compositions that require GPU processing and/or the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing, then the recommended workflow is to render and export a losslessly encoded master file from After Effects and have Adobe Media Encoder pick that up from a watch folder to encode into your various delivery formats.

Thanks for taking the time to answer this question. Knowing this isn't possible at least narrows my options down. It would be helpful to provide some kind of list of what comp settings carry over into AME from After Effects. Is it essentially everything that is enabled in the Timeline? (I know that motion blur settings do.)
I'll put this in a feature request, but yes, we need the other half of After Effects Render Queue in AME in order for AME to be a good replacement for rendering from AE. I'll give you my thoughts on why Render Settings are essential before you would actually want to render with AME instead of doing so because you have to (either because you want to render in the background, or need a codec that has been removed from AE.)
1. Speed: Simply applying a Render Settings preset is much faster than manually setting motion blur, frame blending, work area, etc.
2. Reliability: Not being able to apply a Render Settings preset at the time of render is a recipe for missing a crucial setting buried in a comp, then having to redo a render and wasting time.
3. Features: As noted above, there is no way to approximate Render Queue's ability to change resolutions at render, which results in a lot of wasted time when that feature is needed.
Render Settings I think are crucial to making AME rendering worthwhile for AE users:
1. Rendering resolution
2. Work Area/Entire Composition toggle
3. Field Rendering (wait, does this mean AME can't currently render to fields?)
4. And PRESET ability these settings, so I'm not doing them manually every time.
I realize that your team clearly doesn't spend the same amount of time I do making low res H264 previews and sending final files out in H264 format, so you don't appreciate the impact of the changes you made. Moving to AME for that stuff is a real inconvenience, but implementing the settings above could help soften the blow.

After Effects just bounces in the dock but wont start

Hi all,
Just installed CS4 production studio under Snow Leopard. All works well and updated using the Adobe Updater. All apps are fine except AE which just bounces in the dock a few times and then stops. I read that this could be because Rosetta was not installed. I installed Rosetta from the Snow Leopard DVD and still nothing. Have restarted 3 times just in case (I also read that several restarts may be required to get it to work), but still nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK... Now I feel like Scott of the Antartic writing in his journal before the inevitable... I am writing this purely to help anyone else with the same issue to resolve it without the pain that I am still experiencing. Hopefully the last entry will read "all solved" and not "I am about to pop outside... I may be some time..."
After using CS2 for the bulk of my work I thought I'd try and get this solved once and for all, especially as we have a DVCPROHD project coming up and need CS4 to do it.
OK... The so now I have the suite running, except Premiere is running under at trial without the presets and the updates fail when installing. Contacted support this week, they wont re-open the original case because it has been over a month. Fair enough, new case.
The adobe guy takes control of my machine, deactivates it, then from Finder deletes lots of folders. He then asks me to re-install the products. I do this (2 hours later) and run Premiere and it appears to work with presets. I look a bit closer and notice that under the help menu of Premiere Register, Deactivate and Updates are all greyed out. This is not the case in the other products of the suite. OK, so not a major deal but does imply something is not installed right. I run the Adobe Updater, Premiere updates, but AE, PS and several updates fail.
Call back to support. This time the Adobe guy takes control of my machine suggests I deactivate the suite, run the un-install and then download and run the CS3 Clean script and re-install. I do all this. Another 2 hours later feeding discs into the machine... and... Premiere looks fine, presets all there... but wait for it... AFTER EFFECTS JUST BOUNCES IN THE DOCK BUT WONT START.
3rd call back to support and ask for the issue to be escalated. This is difficult and I have to cause a fuss to realise that this problem is the same one that has been hanging around for months and that I am not prepared to spend more hours removing every trace of Adobe from my machine and re-installing - this doesn't work. The support technician asks me to delete a hidden folder that has all the Adobe patches in it, manually download the AE 9.0.2 update and install it. It installs but AE wont start. I explain that I've had enough and want the problem escalated.
I finally get a call back from a 2nd level engineer this morning. After explaining the that AE wont start and then answering the question "why is this a problem for you!" we do some quick troubleshooting. This time I have to pull out the network cable, turn off Airport, create a new user account, log on to it and then see if AE runs. Which it does. Within seconds we get launched into the pre-determined script, "if it runs under another user account then there is nothing wrong with the applications and I should call Apple". After being patronised for a further 5 mins I had to PROVE to the guy that it was also possible that the fault was Adobes. I also know the moment I phone Apple, the response will be "Call Adobe".
The only example I could give him at the time was to image a piece of software I had written that allocated memory based on the screen resolution (this is a user preference) and if my code was badly written and crashed when encountering a screen resolution bigger than my code was expecting. OK, is that Apple's fault, no it is my code. Will it run under one user and not another, yes it will. There are a million other posibilities. Some I agree could be Apple's, but equally some could be Adobes and the big fat fob off as soon as you can is terrible.
I have also since realised since leaving this call with the technician, that:
1) This is a brand new iMac and the Adobe Suite was the 1st piece of 3rd party software installed on it.
2) The iMac is for video editing and nothing else.
3) This was working without presets before the Adobe guys deleted all these files and asked me to re-install. It is more likely that they have deleted something they should not have rather than the a bug in the OS. A bug in the OS is still possible but I suspect the problem is with a rogue bit of installation code from Adobe.
Finally incase anyone from Adobe is reading this:
I have paid thousands of pounds for this software.
I have been unable to use it for months.
A problem like this should be gold dust for you. Here is the chance to get to the bottom of an issue that several people are having, understand the mechanics of what is going wrong. Write a KB article as well as a patch and this would save the time/money and effort of an awful lot of people (including your own).
As a short thought experiment I would like everyone at Adobe to image the following:
You pay £1,000 of your own money for a tool to do your work on the promise that you can make this money back in productivity gains, new business, etc.
The tool you use every day to make a living won't work. For the benefit of the experiment, imagine this is your email client, web browser or case management tool.
You have no IT group to replace your machine or to come and solve it.
You can't tell your customers that your software is down and you have to keep doing your job.
You have to spend an additional 3 days in your own time, working late or weekends to try and fix the software yourself.
You to keep downloading a Gigabyte of data 3 or four times and you have to pay for downloads. Currently you are running up a bill of over £100 in downloads and phone calls.
You don't get paid the overtime and your customers start complaining you are late with your work.
You lose customers... you eventually get fired because you have lost too many of them.
...This is what it feels like for a small creative business to not be able to install the software they bought.

How can i find out if i have a bad codec affecting after effects?

hi all, i'm having all kinds of problems with after effects cs4. the current problem i'm having is i'll be working on a project, it starts to slow down and become unresponsive, i try to save but then it crashes and everything i've done is lost. opengl is off but i don't think that's the problem because opengl isn't affecting any of my other programs like cinema 4d and i even tried taking out the opengl from the plugins folder but i was still getting opengl error messages with certain effects like the rotoscoping effect. i was wondering if maybe this might be a codec problem since i heard that ae loads codecs at start. how can i find out if a corrupted codec is affecting my after effects?

You remove them all! ;-) I think you are going about this the wrong way.
a)If you ever installed any third-party CoDecs manually, they will be listed in the "Add or Remove Programs" section or have an uninstaller.
b)If those CoDecs were auto-installed e.g. via a web-browser, they will leave traces in the extension lists or even appear as separate entries somewhere as well.
c) If the CoDecs were part of a program, then by all rights, you really should know which programs those are and know how to remove them.
Failing that, simply uninstall Quicktime completely. Reinstall it from scratch. Likewise, manually download a full install of Windows Media Player and reinstall it using the "Repair" option. Everything else is pure specualtion - AE may scan your CoDecs on startup, but if you never import any footage using them, they will not be initialized and not cause trouble.
And honestly: That Mac talk is not worth a dime. Final Cut Pro alone comes with 30 or so extra CoDecs, many of which have been known to be just as troublesome to use with Adobe products and you can encounter the same situation easily any time...

Looking for a better resource to get a handle on using effects in after effects (CS6 BTW)

I would like to get better control over Zooming. The Zooming I found in AE did not function when
dragged it into my effects controller...Is the only Zoom control really the "Scale" as found in Prem-Pro?
I could not find it in AE. I wanted to zoom over the shoulder of my actor and concentrate on what my Actor is looking at/pointing at. I could not find where that effect is at in AE.
If you know of a couple good tutorials to watch that show how to control the effecst in After-Effects it would be welcomed and appreciated. If you know the specific path to use to pan and
zoom for my desired shot mentioned, that too would be appreciated. One other ? I skimmed through "Creative Cow" but there are many videos and after watching a couple that were titled what
I want, were not what I was looking for. Spent an hour plus surfing before I came here to ask.
Are some of the effects only applicable to one or the other? IE: Movies or stills? If so is there a
manual that states what can be used with what? I tried dragging some of the effects into my effects area and they would not populate. IE: Zoom Forward. Only used for Text?

CS4 After Effects no longer loading after installing Office 08

During the christmas break I installed Office 08 and its seamed to have mucked something up in CS4 After effects because it won't load anymore, the program starts loading the libraries and all that stuff at the splash screen and crashes when loading User interface
After effects worked fine before I installed office 08. Does anyone know what has happened and how to fix it? The strange thing is, it works on a couple of macs but the majority of the lab is having this problem.
I have tried heaps of things:
- Totally uninstalled office 08 and its preferences
- Uninstall CS4 and manually remove all the preference files
- Locate the fonts folders and comparing the fonts with that of a working mac
- Creating a new login account
- Updated to After effects 9.0.2
After spending hours and hours and hours doing this, I have had no luck solving the issue. Help will be greatly appreciated... I will backup all the data and re-install Leopard next week if no-one knows how to fix this.

The failure appears to be in the FLV QuickTime component, which is an FLV exporter for QuickTime that Adobe Flash (or older Macromedia releases) installs into your [root]/Library/QuickTime folder. After Effects loads any such component that QuickTime makes available (they appear under the File > Export menu).
First, try deleting the com.macromedia.FLVExporter in your [username]/Library/Preferences folder, if present. Failing that, pull out the FLV QuickTime component I described above.
It is also theoretically possible that the failure is in the next component in the QuickTime components folder, not the FLV component. You might could just pull out the entire contents of that folder and see what happens.
