After Effects nested comps, Motion equivalent?

I'm trying to get an overview of how Motion works.
By way of example, in After Effects, nesting of compositions is the primary way of building up a project.
Each comp is sized (in AE) to suit its intended purpose and content, and then placed (nested) into an ever higher hierarchy of compositions until one represents the final display of the project.
What's the equivalent terminology and approach to working like this in Motion?
Or is it done completely differently?

That's not quite right. Groups can be imported/exported between projects. Groups can have their timing in the timeline trimmed to start and end points. Groups can be sized (2D groups, set the dimensions manually to the size you require — unless you have a very specific need for this action, don't do it - 2D groups do not interact with 3D groups other than by "layering".)  [Default groups are as large as the content contained within them - they're "dynamically" sized. If you Flatten a 3D group, you will force it to the size of the project Canvas. ] Groups are "infinitely" nestable. Groups can be locked. Groups have their own coordinate system so that everything inside a group is maintained within that "universe".  Move that group and everything inside that group goes with it perfectly aligned with everything else within that same group.
You can save your sub-projects as a regular Motion project and import them back into other projects. Motion will "unwrap" the project into the original groups and layers.
Another slick trick is to put pieces of a project into a group and drag that group into Library > Favorites for use in other projects later on. Make sure you give the Group a name you will recognize later on!
You can select Favorites in the Library pane and click the + button at the bottom of the column. You will get a new untitled folder in the "theme" section. Rename the folder and pile all of your project into the folder.  In subsequent projects, you can select all of the contents and drag them into the new project. There are some caveats to this: Rigs break. Some media might become disconnected (especially in the presence of Rigs) and Published Parameters do not copy over, so save your sub-projects before you get into rigging and publishing parameters (those should only be handled in a final project anyway.)
Best of luck!

  • Is there a way to Import After effect files into motion

I was wondering if there is a way to import after effects files into motion.

    hi
no there is not. The only thing you can do is to export the layers out of AE as movies and import them into Motion. Of course you are then hard baking everything and you lose control, but that would be the same if you went to any other system.

  • Its possible import a After effect projects into Motion 5?

    hi guys
its possible import a After effect projects into Motion 5?

No you can't do that. Unless AfterEffects can export some sort of XML, even then I doubt everything would be translated. One way is to export layers
you know won't change as movies and import them into Motion. Then just recreate the layers that you need to change.

  • After Effects Plugins in Motion

Where do I install AfterEffects Plugins into Motion? I can't find a plugins folder for Motion 2.

I purchased magic bullet software three weeks ago and i read somewhere on this or creative cow that motion read After effects plugins. I know FCP does not read them as of the studio 1 version.

  • Can't import into After Effects 7 with Motion 3

This worked like a charm before upgrading to Motion 3, but since then import doesn't seem to work. Either, in After Effects it says the file can't find associated graphics or the import just doesn't work at all. Anybody else had this ?

I got it working in Motion 2 (and used it all the time) using this tutorial

  • Premiere pro and after effects linked comp saving ?????

    hi guys
ive still not sorted this issue out, im thinking its a simple fix but i just cant get it right .
im using cs 5.5 . i work on a project in premiere pro and do a right click on the footage , then select , replace with after effects composition.
after effects opens up ,  i do all my effects and when i view it in premiere, it all works fine.
i get half way through my effects and i need to leave it and save, to work on at a later date.
if i save inside premiere then reopen , the footage doesn't reopen as a linked comp??? the sections that where linked with after effects reopen as missing footage
is there a procedure to saving as a linked comp?
does anyone have a link to a tutorial or a video that shows how to do this??im desperate for an answer . can some one please help??

  • After Effects or Apple Motion?

    Folks,
I know I'll get a lot of pro-After Effects comments here, but I'm trying to figure out which is better. I also know that there are differences that make it much like comparing apples (pardon the pun) to oranges, but I'd still like some opinions.
The reason for this is that I can only afford to upgrade to either Final Cut Pro Suite or the Adobe Video Suite. I currently use Final Cut Pro but would not be adverse to changing to Premiere.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

    >trying to figure out which is better.
Ah yes, the old, but wrong question that a pro should never ask. Depending on your workflows, neither is "better". Both have their merits and ideally you are in the best position when you have the opportunity to use them combined. However, it should be duely noted that even people, who use FCP and Motion on a daily basis, feel that they can't do without AE.
Most obviously Motion begins to feel rather slow and uncomfortable with a certain complexity in your projects, which can be attributed to it being totally and completely aimed at using hardware accelleration and having little or no fallback measures. On the other hand it has some nice particle and behavior stuff which AE can't compete with. Also roundtripping is of course quite evolved.
AE's failings mostly lie in using hardware resources inefficiently and being quite touchy in terms of non-optimally configured environments. In other areas it beats Motion in terms of flexibility, even though arguably some of the tools still look weak compared to even more sophisticated programs. For instance many of the artists I was mentioning earlier still prefer AE's 3D to that of motion for the single reson of it having shadows...
Well, anyway, get the tool you feel most comfortable with. If you're more of an editor rather than a motiongraphics/ effects guy, probably updating FCP and getting Color along with it will be more valuable to you than a newer version of AE. If it's the other way around and you are looking for certain workflows that would require Shape Layers, 32bit processing, Puppet Tool or you already have a lot of AE plugins which you want to make better use of, than updating Ae would probably be smarter.

  • From After Effects to Motion plug-in or export

How do I contact Motion Apple engineers, I want to pay to have a plug-in developed that will save, or export After Effects projects as Motion projects.
    Trace Burroughs
    LMENSTUDIO(at)aol.com

There are several plug-ins and scripts that export After Effects data in forms that can be used by other applications. Pretty much every aspect of a project is exposed through the scripting interface (with a few minor exceptions).
If you want to create a script or plug-in to do so, you can get the information from the documents on the After Effects Developer Center:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/aftereffects.html
There are links to forums for scripting and plug-in development on that page.
If you don't want to write your own, check out the forum AE Enhancers:

A lot of great script writers and plug-in developers hang out there.

  • A Headache of a problem! After Effects to DVDSP

    Hello to every one!
I am having a heck of a time trying to figure this out. I will try and sum this up as best as I can
The goal of the project is - To create a motion menu in After Effects, export and bring into DVD Studio Pro and add buttons for the video. Thats pretty much it.
The Problem I am having - Once I export the menu it looks great, but once I bring it into DVDSP it losses so much quality that I cant use it. I get horrible interlacing, looks like its vertical if anything. Im ages goes very soft and block.
I made the menu in After Effects using the the - NTSC D1 Widescreen SQ Pixels. After doing some reading I was seeing that even if I want it to be a 16:9 Menu It still needs to be made in the 720x480 Dimensions. So I set my comp to NTSC DV Widescreen 720x480 with the Pixel Aspect Ratio to D1/DV Widescreen 1.21.
This did not help at all. But to try anything I could think of I imported the new file with the new settings into Motion and exported it out of there with the default NTSC settings and brought it in to DVDSP and it look good! just a little soft. I though I was in the clear but after I burned the DVD and popped it into a player it looked a little better then the first time I burned but still has all the interlacing problems.
Can any one help me out here? Am I missing something as far as to witch setting I should Set After Effects before I make a menu? Im lost here and have been dealing with this for 4 days
Alslo about Pixel Aspect Ratio Why dose After Effects use .90 and 1.21 but Motion or DVDSP use .90 or 1.20?

I hope some one can add to this... Dose no one use After Effects to build motion menus?
I got a little farther in my problem, I took my comps that are made in NTSC D1 Widescreen SQ Pixels
when doing the final render I selected the Stretch under render Que. and selected the NTSC DV Wide Screen preset. This set the video to 720x480 looking squeezed. Once I imported into DVD Studio Pro, DVDSP un-squeezed the footage and it fit like a 16x9 menu should. However the image still looked bad. I still had the tearing problems and jaggy lines every where. Once again I took the file and brought it into Motion used the NTSC DV preset. Loaded it in and just exported it out and brought back into DVDSP. It looks good no jaggy lines or anything, a little soft though. however when I burn the DVD I still get artifacts around some graphics. (little blocks)
I don't understand why the extra step to Motion makes the file look better in DVDSP?
I also don't understand how there is no information on the web about using After Effects with DVDSP.

  • Using adobe after effects templates in fcpx

Is it possible to use an adobe after effects template in motion 5 or fcpx? If so how do I go about doing this? I am fairly new to this and i found a template that i would really like to use for a football highlight video that i am putting together. Thank you ahead of time for any help that yall can give me.

On more research, I discovered the following link showing a workflow to go between FCP X and After Effects.  Please disregard my first post.  Adobe After Effects is currently in 64 bit, but their site says it is compatible with Mac OS 10.5.8 and 10.6. Not sure if Lion would therefore be included.  Sorry for the wrong info.

  • HELP: My Videohive After Effects project is rendering artifacts!  AE CS6

    Hi all,
    HP-HPE 510t
    i7 2600 @ 3.4GHz
    16GB Ram
    Windows 8 x64bit
    Nvidia GTX 660 Ti
I purchased a Videohive After Effects project with motion gfx and video, and it  is rendering artifacts in two places.
I'm exporting Quicktime + animation, tried + PNG, and + photo jpeg but all with the same results.
I even contacted the author but he cannot explain why either. The interesting thing is, it renders beautifully without any artifacts in AE.
Only on the export render do I see the black silhouette artifacts. Below are some photos of what I mean.
Please help? i'm trying to export the highest quality for youtube and am going to H.264 the lossless version.
    It looks correct in AE:

But with black artifacts in lossless render?

    Thank Rick,
Only reason that I'm using photobucket instead of the built-in image embeddor (camera icon), is because it doesn't seem to be working for me. All I get is an empty dialog box, tried also with video but that one seems to be working properly.
    maybe ill try firefox.
    any solutions for the artifacts??
My output module settings so far have been..
    tried:
    1) Quicktime + Animation (lossless) quality 100
    2) Quicktime + photo jpg
    3) Quicktime + PNG (lossless) quality 100
    4) Quicktime + H.264  30mbps
tried rendering again with "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously" turned off...still getting artifacts only on these text offset animation frames.
still looks perfect while in after effects.. I restarted my computer, I cannot figure this out.
    Help!

  • After Effects & Premiere

After Effects n00b here. Seeking to learn and improve. But at the outset of my journey I have some confusion, already.
Just like Illustrator and InDesign have functionality overlap, so do After Effects and Premiere. So, I ask:
How do they compliment each other? How does one decide to designate certain tasks for one or the other, when they both handle video and animation?

    > You can "create motion graphics, apply visual effects, composite visual elements, perform color correction," etc in Premiere. Can you not???
Not easily or well. (Actually, the color correction tools in Premiere Pro are coming along, so that one might be a "yes".)
    > but marketing verbiage aside, I'm really seeking the experience-based thoughts and opinions of my peers - the ones who actually use the software professionally, day-in day-out.
That's not "marketing verbiage"; that's a summary of the applications written by someone who has been using both full-time for about 10 years now (me, as it happens, since a long time ago I wrote the After Effects documentation).
Here's another way of answering the question:
Use Premiere Pro to take movies, cut them apart into shorter pieces, and arrange them in time.
Use After Effects to layer many pieces of movies and other animated images (created in After Effects or imported from elsewhere) on top of each other to create composite images.
Premiere Pro is optimized for arranging movies in time. After Effects is optimized for changing the way movies look.
Each has many rudimentary features of the other, but trying to edit a movie in After Effects or create motion graphics in Premiere Pro is bound to leave you frustrated.

  • After Effects CS3 Motion Stabilize Irritation

    Hello!
I am pretty new to After Effects, and I've been trying to learn learn learn. Though, I am having a strange and annoying problem.
Imagine you set the table for dinner. and everything is perfect. Then when you go to put dinner on it. everything is messed up again!
Aside from the analogy, lemme explain my problem... I have some pretty shakey footage I am working with. I am trying to stabilize it. It is only standard def, but I have a point in the video that I can easily track.
    I'll set it up by:
    Clicking the layer
    Opening the Tracker Controls box
    Clicking Stabilize Motion
    Setting up the tracker point
Then I'll click the analyze button. It tracks it fine. I then hit apply. It worked! I made it perfect for me!
Then the problem arises. For what reason, I am not sure. But anytime I RAM preview it again, or render it, it gets worse!
The picture gets jumpier each time. I'm absolutley baffled. I went closer to try and figure it out. I checked frame by frame and it seems that the motion tracker gets knocked a little early or late or something. For example, in a video 3 frames in length. The first 2 targets are in the center, and then it moves right, and the tracker follows this fine. Then I watch it again, and the first frame is correct, then the 2nd frame moves where the 3rd should be, and the 3rd frame is correct. If that made any sense.
I am hoping that someone out there has any advice for me. I'm starting to get frustrated.
    Thanks,
    ~Bill L.

    Thanks for the help.
I makes sense that it is the frames.
So I'm checking the frame rates now. Under the video file interpretation,
Frame Rate: "Use frame rate from file: (29.970 fps)"
    Fields and Pulldown: Spereate Fields=Off
    Square pixels.
Under the Comp(which was made from just dragging my file to the timeline)
Frame Rate: 29.97 Frames per second
    Advanced:
~Preserve frame rate when nested or in render queue is UNCHECKED
~Preserve resolution when nested is UNCHECKED
Not sure if there is something I didn't list here that would need to be. I still can't get the video to work and these seem like the right settings.
Is there something I'm not seeing? Or is this something I just don't know to check ?
    Thanks again,
    ~Bill L.
    ******EDIT******
P.S. I also tried stabilizing the footage when the video's frame rate was set to "Conform to frame rate 29.97" Same issue, everytime I RAM preview/render the footage gets jumpier and jumpier.

  • Nesting COMPS in Motion?

I've used After Effects previously and am trying to find a comparable method of nesting comps in Motion. I have two lines on test shifting their positions in a layer - and then I want to zoom them forward as one. So I see that I can keyframe the scale of the entire layer - if I set Blending Mode to "Combine" the text maintains its clear edge when scaled over 100%, but once I add Basic 3D distortion, the edge becomes pixeled. I know in AE there is a button to remedy this - is there a similar function in Motion - or am I going about this process all wrong?

What you're doing may be causing that layer to be rasterized, thus the sizing issue when you blow it up. Any chance of you posting the project for inspection?
