After Effects not reporting virtual cores

I'm currently installing my new workstation and came across the same issue however, I have 36 physical cores, 72 virtual cores but only 36 are visible by AE.
Using latest CC2014.

Hi Todd, thanks for the feedback, managed to change it.
However onto next thing when I look at the resources AE is using it's far from using the potential of my new workstation.
Are there specific things I should look at or change to get AE more up to speed ?
Current hardware setup:
2x Intel Xeon E5-2699v3 @2.30Ghz (2x18core)
256GB Ram
System disk: 2x120gb SSD RAID0
Scratch disk: 2x120gb SSD RAID0
Workdisk: 4x512GB SSD RAID0
Video: 2x GTX980
Windows 8.1 Pro
So for example, I'm loading in a 4K DNG sequence, I would expect Disk Usage would get up to maximum speed, however in Resource monitor it shows it's using only a mere 10MB/sec
For this example CPU & RAM are behaving quite normal as I don't expect it to be CPU intensive or Fill up my RAM completely.

  • After Effects not utilizing all cores

I have a Z800 dual quad core machine and I turned hyperthreading on, so 16 virtual cores.  When running AE, I just applied a simple blur to a 24P timeline from a Pansonic HMC150 1080P/24 mode.  I only performed a simple blur effect and when I do a RAM preview only 13th core is really being used, all the others are practically dormant and it only utilizes an average of 10% of all processing power.  I have turned render simultaneous frames on and off using a variety of settings, but it doesn't matter.  It is Windows 7 64 bit and my machine has 36GB of RAM and running the Quadro FX 3800.  Using all defaults right now.

BTW, don't confuse multi-threading with the multiprocessing that is done by the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature.
The Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature starts a separate instance of the After Effects application for each processor core, and each separate process works on its own frame. So, four processes might be running, working on frames 1, 2, 3, and 4.
After Effects is also (and unrelatedly) a multithreaded application, and many of the effect plug-ins are also multi-threaded. This means that each process---each instance of the After Effects application---can spread its work over mutliple processors and multiple threads. Even if Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously is switched off, you can see multiple processor cores chugging away on the same frame.
This distinction is important because of this tip, from After Effects Help:
"In many cases, performance is improved by using fewer than the maximum  number of processors for Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing,  even when you have enough RAM for all of the processors. After Effects is a multithreaded application that can also use other forms of multiprocessing beyond just Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing, and it is possible for the processors to become “overscheduled” if these threads are competing for the same resources as the background processes used for rendering with Render Multiple  Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing. Therefore, the best approach is to begin by using a small number of processors for Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing; and then increase the number of processors used until you find the optimum number for your computer system and compositions."
For more on this performance tip, see this post on my blog: "Performance tip: Don't overschedule your processors."

  • After Effects not working in Mavericks

Is anyone having issues with Adobe After Effects not working in Maveriks? Premeire, Photoshop, Audition all work, but not AE. No update from Adobe available.

This update is ONLY FOR MAVERICKS. You can't update through Creative Cloud, to prevent users of other operating systems from installing it.

My comp is a 1280x720 30 second spot. Not too complex
of an animation with not that many layers (I know that
sounds vague). I've purged the comp and even tried the
"Secret" option in preferences to purge every 3 frames.
Keep getting this error message when I render. I am
running an Intel Xeon CPU 2.8ghz dual with 2.75 gb of
    RAM with AE 7
    Thanks

Mmh, yes, indeed that very likely would be to blame on Quicktime. You probably had better luck with CS3 which handles H.264 natively via MediaCore. My guess that it is simply some odd allocation of the compression which could be fixed, probably even a simple export from QT Pro to the same format. Do the files correctly play in QT player? As an alternative to QT Pro I recommend attempting to run it thru SUPER©, which is free. Perhaps this will repair the streams and prevent the errors. If not, you will have to shelve out some money or find otehr ways of converting your footage, I'm afraid.

  • After Effects limited to 32 cores?

I'm running Windows Professional 7 on a new machine with 2x 10-core E5v2 processors. There's a total of 20 actual cores and 40 virtual cores. After Effects CC (latest build) is only registering 32 of those cores even though Cinebench and the Windows Task Manager are seeing all 40. See the attached screenshot. Has anyone else seen this issue?

Some cores may be tied up with OS operations or other tasks. The report may be correct.
One more thing about After Effects fully utilizing system resources. AE is a frame by frame rendering machine which means that it takes the data from all of the layers in a single frame of a project and starts making calculations. The ram and resources required to do this depend on the size of the frame and the coding of the calculations. Many effects are not optimized to look for all available resources, but even if they were a 12 core machine with a bunch of ram has way more calculating capacity than all of the data from 100 layers of HD source material and the effects processing so it's highly unlikely that the full system resources would be used to make the calculations.
3D apps and render engines they use rely on much more complex calculations of the paths of light rays, reflection, refraction and every other thing a light ray does as it interacts with a material. These calculations can easily cascade into a demand for all available resources. It's a totally different way of calculating pixel values. Until AE's basic architecture is re-engineered there's no way that a HD or even 4K frame size will use up 40 virtual cores and 64GB of ram.

  • Adobe after effects not responding, ever!

I have been having this issue for a long time and cant seem to find a solution, maybe I am wording it wrong, i dont know. It worked just fine for about a year, but now basically every single time I open adobe after effects cs5 it works for about 1-2 minutes and then freezes, the typical "this program is not responding" message shows up with no error code. it doesnt matter what I do or what I click on, it happens every single time! Its really frusterating! my computer has 32 gb, I'm sure that is plenty of RAM. I have done all the updates on the adobe website (including the quicktime updates) I saw OpenGL mentioned many times but I cant seem to find anything like that on my computer so I dont know if that is a problem or not. I noticed on the sytem requirements list (I have a windows 7 professional) they said that the processor must be Intel® Core™2 Duo or AMD Phenom® and my computer has intel (R) Xeon(R) cpu  5160 @   3.00GHZ  3.00 ghz (2 processors) I honestly have no idea if that would be a problem. If anyone else has had this issue I would love to hear how you fixed it, I have tried so many things chances are I already tried it but still.

okay sorry it took so long, this is my dads old computer so I had to keep calling him haha. so I literally anwered everything, I really want to find a solution!
    1) adobe after effects cs5 with the 10.0.2 update
    2) on the adobe website it looks like this is the most recent update for cs5 on windows
    3) windows 7 professional 64 bit opetrating system
    4) intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU, 2 processors, 32 GB of ram, NVIDIA Quadro FX 5800, 2 disk drives, no external drives
    5) NVIDIA Quadro FX 5800
I couldnt seem to find anything about CUDA , I googled it but couldnt find anything to tell me how to find out this info, if you know please let me know
    6) nvidia quadro fx 5800
    7) source footage is microsoft video AVI, with quicktime
    8) it was just the typical "this program is not responding, please wait for the program to respond" I let it run a couple times to see if it ever responded but it never did. but the last couple of times I opened AE it just freezes and no message shows up.
    9) it doesnt matter what I do, even if I just open it and let it sit there it still freezes up.
    10) it worked for about a year, I dont beleive anything major has changed on my computer, but I have been stuggling with this problem so long I wouldnt be able to remember anyways.
    11) yes quicktime is installed and updated, it is version 7.7.4
    12) I usually dont have anything else running other than AE
    13) I asked my dad about this and he said he didnt think so so I assume that means no.
    14) yes I have openGL enabled
    15) within the first two minutes of opening AE doesnt matter if I am editing, ram previewing, or nothing.
    16) I have tried checking and unchecking the "render multiple frames simultaneously multiprocessing" and the problem occurs either way, but right now I am using it.
    17) no use of ray traced 3d rendering
    18) not an out put problem
    19) exact sequence of steps? well... I click on adobe after effects, it opens kinda slower than it used to, then I usually will his ram preview because then I can see when it stops exactly, but I also have tried opening it and just looked at settings or preferences or what not and it would freeze then, or I will click on a diffrent compositions and it would freeze. pretty much whatever steps I take it always happens.

  • After Effects "Not Responding"

I currently have an issue with After Effects where the system constantly freezes and it says "Not Responding" at the top of the screen.  While this is happening the screen starts flashing for 30 seconds to a minute.  During this time I am not able to click on any other windows, not even clicking the start button works.  Once it stops I am able to work for a while and then it locks up again and goes through the same process.  Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and then escaping from the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen usually gets the system to break out of the freeze cycle, but then it happens again a few minutes later.
I am running the latest version of Adobe CC and I have had the issue on every version of CC.  I also use Element 3D quite a bit and I experienced the issue on version 1.6 and I am currently on the most recent release of Element 3D 2.
    System Specs
    Core i7-4770K 3.5 GHz
    16 GB Memory
    Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit
OS and programs installed on a 256GB Samsung SSD
Adobe Cache on a 256GB Samsung SSD
Video card is a Nvidia GTX 980 (but I had the exact same issue on a Nvidia GTX 560ti)

Thanks so much for answering.  I have updated every driver in my system including the SSD firmware and I still have the issue.  I noticed that there a couple people that have experienced this, but I cannot find a solution anywhere.  Any other thoughts?

  • After Effects not recognizing Red Rocket?

    Hi everyone,
I'm having serious troubles with a Red Rocket in AE CS6.  Nothing I have done will get AE to recognize the rocket.  Premiere seems to recognize it and use it just fine.
The card is clearly installed correctly; it works in Red Cine X and Premiere, giving realtime performance with 4k footage @ 29.97 fps, with minimal processor load (~7%).  If I force AE to try to use the card with Interpret Footage > Main > More Options... > Use Rocket, the system slows to a crawl and fails to perform at all.  (It may take 10-30 seconds to update when the cursor is moved in the timeline.)
It does not appear to be simply that the red rocket card is not being released by another program -- at least, when I restart the system and open After Effects first, the symptoms are identical.
The rocket is on the latest firmware -- 1.4.27, I believe.  I have done everything possible to confirm that the card is not the problem, including opening a support ticket with Red and sending the physical unit back to them for testing.
I have tried replacing the ImporterREDServer.exe and ImporterRED.prm with the Adobe Labs version from May/June 2012, that appears to have no effect.
I'm running Windows 7 on a dual 8-core Xeon system with 128 GB of RAM.  There are also two GTX 680 graphics cards, one on each processor bus, installed in the system.  I'm running the latest, updated versions of Creative Suite CS6, and there is no antivirus or firewall installed or running.
Thoughts?  Directions?  Things to test?  Or should I junk the card or the workflow?  I'm pretty committed to Adobe After Effects at the moment, though this experience has me strongly considering Smoke, Nuke, or something else for the future (the switching costs are high).
    Thanks all,
    -Ryan

In case anyone else ends up here:
It appears the best performance I can get in AE CS6 is about 6 fps at full quality.  I think this qualifies as 'working' -- it's only 4 fps when I'm not using the card, and processor load is higher.  At least it's stable now.
The fix was: reinstalling AE, reinstalling all Nvidia drivers, and shuffling the cards into different PCI slots.  Not sure which made a difference.  Also, moderating my expectations about what a red rocket could do in AE -- I've read that recent machines only see a performance gain while rendering, and everyone is turning them off during compositing work.

  • Rendering MP4 with AME from After Effects is always single-core?

When I render MP4 from After Effects CC 2014.2 (by AME) then rendering always is slow and only single-core, despite that in AE prefs Multiprocessor rendering is set.
    Why?

I have made quick test now.
AE's Render Queue: render time 53s - average CPU load about 50% (12 cores, 8 rendering threads at this case) - 8 threads active in Process Explorer
AME Render: 2m08s - average CPU load about 20% (same machine) - 1 thread active in Process Explorer
(please note that this was simple project; at 8active/12total cores this should be 66% or even more total CPUs load, so probably much time was disk I/Os - if only was 50% of total CUP load)
    So essential question is:
Is AME CC 2014.2 renders AE projects as set in AE prefs in multiprocessing?
Or maybe there is separate option in AME to turn on multiprocessing on AE's projects?

  • Problema After Effects CS6 "inizializzazione media core"

Cosa devo fare?
    ENGLISH
Sorry I have a problem for two days ... I installed the trial version of adobe master collection cs6: all programs work fine, only After Effects and Premiere Pro do not work. I'm more interested after effects, remains with the screen "initializing media core" and does not go forward. I tried to uninstall it and then reinstall it but it did not work, I uninstalled it and installed quick time, but it did not work. What should I do?

If it crashes due to text, remove any fonts you may have recently added. Otehrwise you should consider rebuilding your system. Sounds liek you realyl made a mess somewhere that cannot be resolved by just messing with AE, QT and your graphics driver. In particular stay away from installing any CoDec packs. K-Lite is known to cause a lot of damage to Adobe apps...

  • After Effects not Ram previewing properly

    Hello
I use after effects cc 2014 on my macbook pro version 10.9.5 2.6GHz intel core i7. Memory 16G 1600 MHz DDR3. Nvidia GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB.
Recently, almost every time I try and do a Ram preview using the button in the preview panel, my computer pauses and appears to not register then when I move the mouse it beach balls. If I wait and watch it it, it suddenly shows green but doesn't play back. If I hit the button again it does it all again. If I hit space bar to play it doesn't play the audio. It does scrub fine. If I go on to another program while it is previewing it lets me know when it has done but isn't playing and if I hit the button to get it to play it does it again!! It does occasionally work but more often than not it doesn't.
I have tried all the usual restarts and purging the cache.
The comp is a 25fps 1920x1080 and I am using 3D but the comps aren't huge.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks
    Leah

well, one way to go would be to use an AEGP plug-in which would intercept
    the preview command.
i don't know if there is such a command and if it's guaranteed to
intercept, but you could use command_hook with the "all commands" option,
and see what you catch when you hit 0.
if so, then your effect could communicate with the AEGP to ask for the
    state.
if you give up on ram previews and care only for queue renders, then you
could check the queue state during the render call.

  • Eye Dropper tool in After Effects Not working Properly

I am using Adobe After Effects CS5 on a mac. And most all of the eyedropper tools in the software are not working properly. They always select a way different color than it should be. What is wrong?
One day they just all decided to not work. Its really frustrating. Its been a few weeks now.

Well, For some strange reason its working just fine today. I did restart my computer yesterday and after that it seems to be working.
I haven't recenitly messed with my hardware acceleration/graphics card or monitor color profile. So if that was it, then it did it on its own.
None the less its working now. Thank you for your help!!!

  • After Effects not using free RAM?

    Hi there
Just like to ask question regarding after effects and ram usage.
I remember before I installed the app Memory Booster - that allows you to keep track of how much ram, there was a healthy use of RAM there from after effects.
But i noticed today, whilst rendering and doing background cache rendering, the free RAM still available stays at around 4GB and I am wondering why it's not using this free RAM to help faster rendering?
this is my current multi-processing/ram settings on AE- essentially it should be using up to 6.5 GB of RAM as i allocated as I need faster rendering? Just wondering why it's staying stuck at around 3-4GB of free RAM on my system when it could clearly be used by AE. I want AE to use the RAM as it is the only running program on my system when i work!
Memory Booster down to 3.18GB with one safari tab open for Adobe forums, when exiting, it jumps back up to 4GB free RAM
    Confused!
    Thanks

Different projects, different footage attributes, different AE features used, different effects used, different delivery specs....
...are you comparing apples to apples, or apples to ORANGES?  We don't know that.

  • After Effects not updating to 11.0.3 or 12.0.1 from 11.0.2 on Mavericks

    Hi,
I just update to Mavericks last night and today when I tried to open after effects, it tells me my version of operating system is not compatible with AE. I looked up google to find a remedy for this solution. I then came across the update of 11.0.3 from adobe site, aswel as the 12.0.1, but found no luck. It wont let me update it and gives me an error number
    Error Code: U44M2P28
    please help!!!

If you're running After Effects CS6 (11.0), the After Effects CC (12.0.1) update is not relevant to you.
To install the After Effects CS6 (11.0.3) update, do the following:
    1. Restart your computer.
    2. Open Adobe Bridge and no other applications.
    3. In Bridge, choose Help > Updates.
If that doesn't work, uninstall After Effects CS6, restart your computer, reinstall After Effects CS6 (11.0.0), and then do the three steps above again.
