5 hard drives:
1- operating system and softwear
2- Raid 0 - footage and projects.
3- Raid 0- used to render projects out to.
(Simply Raid 0, I dont have a controller or anything like that, can't afford)
Ever since the first time I used after effects, when I try to pre-render anything it only uses 6% of ram, so it takes forever to render out anything. One day it did say 46% used and that time it finished real fast. How can I fix this? to use more when I render out?
Thanks for the help

Nothing to fix because nothing is broken. AE will only use what it needs. If it renders slow or even reverts to single core rendering, it means there are effects or settings that trigger this behavior because they are incompatible with MP rendering. Likewise, some effects are simply more CPU intense, but never use a lot of RAM while the otehr day the situation may be reversed...

  • After Effects not using free RAM?

    Hi there
Just like to ask question regarding after effects and ram usage.
I remember before I installed the app Memory Booster - that allows you to keep track of how much ram, there was a healthy use of RAM there from after effects.
But i noticed today, whilst rendering and doing background cache rendering, the free RAM still available stays at around 4GB and I am wondering why it's not using this free RAM to help faster rendering?
this is my current multi-processing/ram settings on AE- essentially it should be using up to 6.5 GB of RAM as i allocated as I need faster rendering? Just wondering why it's staying stuck at around 3-4GB of free RAM on my system when it could clearly be used by AE. I want AE to use the RAM as it is the only running program on my system when i work!
Memory Booster down to 3.18GB with one safari tab open for Adobe forums, when exiting, it jumps back up to 4GB free RAM
    Confused!
    Thanks

Different projects, different footage attributes, different AE features used, different effects used, different delivery specs....
...are you comparing apples to apples, or apples to ORANGES?  We don't know that.

  • After Effects not recognising all RAM

I have just installed After Effects on a new PC with 6GB of RAM, however on the splash screen that appears when loading up AE it says x% of 4GB RAM being used.
Do I need to do something to make it see 6GB?
    Thanks in advance.

    > I have read all the posts and advice and still come out confused - I
have 8GB (on OS X) and just leave the multiprocessor options switched
off until someone comes up with a clear and concise walkthrough for
    idiots like me !
from the post that I linked to:
"Let's take an example of a computer with eight processor cores and 8GB of RAM:
For HD, you want at least 2GB for each process; preferably more. And you almost always want to leave at least 2GB for other applications. That leads to some relatively simple math. For an eight-core system with 8GB of RAM, leaving 2GB for other applications gets you down to 6GB. That's enough RAM for three processes at 2GB each."
Is there something about that that you don't understand? Set Minimum Allocation Per CPU to 2GB. Set RAM To Leave For Other Applications to 2GB. You're done. After Effects will use three processes for rendering.

  • How to create an after effects plugin using c++?

I've gotten to the point of downloading the after effects sdk. Although I am still lost and other than here, there are very little places where they give you proper information, if any at all, on how to develop after effects plugins using c++.

  • AE CS3 only uses 4gb ram

    Hi there,
I am actually using the AE CS3 version on a Windows 7 64 bit PC with 12 Gig of ram. But everytime I use AE, it says that it uses 4 gigabyte of ram only. That's kind of strange, as the OS uses the whole amount of ram.
Is there any solution to it or do I have to upgrade to CS4? Hope not...
    Thank you!

The information in that FAQ entry is still mostly valid for After Effects CS3, especially the important point: After Effects CS3 is a 32-bit application, so each process can only see and use a theoretical maximum of 4GB of RAM. However, with Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocesing, After Effects spawns additional processes that can each use its own few GB of RAM.
Here's the page in After Effects CS3 Help about the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature:
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/8.0/WS2FD05F13-66CB-47c1-9FD2-7CEE7EDF588F.ht ml
Don't be so quick to dismiss information about CS4 as being irrelevant to CS3 (and vice versa). Most things don't change from one version to the next, so information written for one version is usually still good for the next. (If you're ever unsure, you can use this decoder ring page to see what's changed from CS3 to CS4.)

  • After Effects Rendering Problem and RAM Preview Problem

I posted a question about this yesterday but I thought I would repost it with more detail!
I have a restless issue here with rendering and RAM preview. I am simply trying to create a viral ad which uses the cloning effect I achieved with masking for my college coursework and I have completed the process of creation but I have ran into problems. The RAM preview will only play up to a certain point then it will just stop and this effects the final render because it gets to the point in the rendering where the RAM preview stops and then a message will pop up saying the rendering has failed or something? (Screenshots Below)
I have tried RAM previewing just one of the three videos I am using and it still stops at the same point.
I am using .avi files and have tried converting to .mov, .mp4, .wmv all of which didn't work.
I am using After Effects CS4 ver 9.0.0.346
    My computer specs
AMD SEMPRON processor 2.7Ghz (single core)
2GB RAM (I know its not alot ;))
    ATI Radeon HD 5600 512mb
    Creative audigy 2 sound card
    Windows XP Serivice Pack 3
It's quite urgent and I hope someone can help!
    Cheers!

With just 2GB of RAM, I'm impressed that you can generate that much of a RAM preview.  RAM previews use RAM. When they run out, they stop.
Have you tried rendering the clip using the Render Queue.  If so, does it also report an error at a similar point?  If it renders correctly from the queue, you're done.  If it doesn't, you probably have a corrupt source file.

  • After Effects not using all my VRAM?

So, I've just upgraded my GTX 460 SE to a GTX 770 4GB and cut my 81 minute render time on one project down to 23 minutes which is awesome, but I have an issue where AE CS5.5 isn't allowing me to use more than 800MB of VRAM regardles of how many models I'm using. A single 300k poly model takes me to 700MB (Using Element 3D plugin). Adding 20 more models ranging from 20k to 400k doesn't change my VRAM usage at all. It just stays around 700MB.
Do I have to change some setting to get After Effects to see that I have more VRAM that can be used to store more models? I'm not asking for it to completely fill all 4GB, but I was expecting it to at least take advantage of 2 to 3GB. My old 1GB card would fill up to 900MB as I boosted the number of models and would scale down as I removed models. Thanks in advance for any help!
    System specs:
    i7-3930k OC'd to 4.5GHz
    GTX 770 4GB GPU
    16GB 1866 RAM (upgrading to 48GB soon)
SSD for OS and programs only (no games)
    SSD for scratch and media
HDD for audio and lower res media
    Dual 23" 1080 monitors (HP 23xi)

Alright, so I've done some more tests and I found out that I had to set the fast previews to Adaptive Resolution -- Open GL Off. Now my GPU stores up to exactly 2GB (the value I set my texture memory to). So it looks like if I can set my texture memory higher I'll also be able to take a greater advantage of my GPU. However, After Effects CS5.5 won't let me increase the texture memory any higher than 2000MB. Is there a workaround for this or is After Effects just not capable of using more than 2GB of VRAM?
Edit: Did some more tests. For some reason 2GB seems to be the limit for 1080 video, but bumping up to a 4K comp got me to 4GB very quickly. So it looks like the high quality 3D models I was adding didn't take up as much VRAM as I thought they would. Even better than that is after changing the fast preview to Adaptive Resolution I can now have 1000 low to medium poly count models and move around the scene in real time, no lag at all. Still not sure why having Open GL on causes things to slow down so much though. Maybe because Element 3D uses their own Open GL renderer and the After Effects Open GL renderer starts to conflict? No idea, either way I'm far more than satisfied with my findings.
Edit 2: Ran some tests with a 4k aircraft model in a 1080 comp. It takes about 1.5GB of VRAM to load it, but once I run a RAM preview it takes up 3.5GB. Looks like it all depends on the models you use in your projects. If you aren't using crazy high res/polycount models then you'll be fine with 3GB, or maybe even 2GB of VRAM, but as soon as you start using high res models, especially high res models of very large/complicated models like large planes, people, cars, etc. then more VRAM definitely makes a difference. I hope this helps someone else down the road!

  • After Effects CC failed renders, RAM preview useless

    Hi there,
I'm having some strange issues with After Effects, the sort that I've never experienced before.
I'm animating a 5-second sequence with nine layers, each with video copilot's "Twitch" effect plugin added. The comp is big, set to 4000 x 4000 px.
When I go to RAM preview on full resolution, I only get ten frames of the comp previewed before it loops from that point. Spacebar preview returns the same result (it freezes at ten frames). I tried exporting the comp, but it returns "Failed at 00:00:02." I created a new 1920x1080 comp and tried again with scaled down source material but the same effects occur, this time further down the timeline at about 3 seconds. Can't RAM preview, Spacebar preview or export beyond that point. If I trim the comp to just before the problem frames at 3 seconds, I can successfully export.
I'm running a brand new macbook pro (2.3 GHz, 16gb RAM, Nvidia Geforce GT 750M [CUDA enabled]) and the project is located on the internal SSD. OSX 10.9. After Effects is the latest update available 12.2.1.5.
Any ideas? I've not found anything in any forums dealing with this specifically. I think I have an OSX update due actually - I'll check to see if this does something interesting and report back!
    Cheers!

    Hi Todd and AlpineEdits,
I deleted Twitch from the plugins folder and ran a few tests - everything seems fine.
I reinstalled Twitch, but used perhaps an older version - I didn't use the 64-bit specific plugin provided as part of the download package. The same sequence now previews seamlessly and fast too.
Seems that Twitch causes strange little AE hiccups!
Thanks so much for the simple suggestions, worked a charm.

  • After Effects CS5 crashing during RAM Preview

After Effects CS5 was working just fine less than 24 hrs ago.
Now I cant even get it to RAM preview some text moving across the screen as a test.
It keeps getting hung up on "Background Process Status Loading Projects..."
Never an issue before. Didnt update or change ANYTHING.
Of course this happens right in the middle of a job...nice....
    Utterly frustrated.
    Mac OS 10.7.5
2 X 3 Dual Core Intel Xeon (one of the earlier Mac Pro Intel towers)
    19GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB

    Funny you said that.
That is what i thought the problem might be. I am going to archive some stuff on my hard drive.
That is when the app started having issues. When the project started getting larger and having more elements.
In fact, now i am getting a weird wobble when I render a sequence from premiere. If I only render part of it, it doesnt happen.
Maybe I need to free up some space on my hard drive...?

  • After effects only renders 30 seconds!

HELP! I'm using After Effects CS6 and trying to render an AVI file, but it only renders 30 seconds! No matter where i start the green bar will only go 30 seconds into the file It doesn't give me an error message or anything, it just says "Render Complete" even tho its no where near complete

The other thing that may be going on is that your work area is set to 30 seconds. Check your Render Settings for in and out point.
If that's not it then we need a screenshot of your comp with the properties of the layers revealed (press the u key twice) and also your render settings along with a concise description of your workflow. I've made the only two guesses to the problem that can be made without details.

  • Exporting to After Effects and using Magic Bullet filters

I have a sequence in Premiere Pro CS6 that I have edited.  I have opened this sequence up in After Effects CS6.  I have added several effects filters....then I wanted to send it back to Premiere so I could finish the video.......creating titles...etc.  However I know I am doing something wrong becuase when I try to bring the video from AE to Premiere I can't add it to the timeline.  I tried using "create new sequence" and that didn't work either.  I am new to using AE and this is my first time experimenting with effects and filters.  Not sure where I am going wrong.  Any help will be appreciated.  All I want to do is send my edited video to AE...add the effects....and send it back to Premiere so I can finish it.

The upshot here is that you can only 'send' it one way.  If you start in PP and then send it from there to AE, then whatever you do in AE automatically shows up in PP, so there's no need to 'send' it back to PP.
The only way to 'send' footage over to PP is if it starts out in After Effects.  You can't have AE in the middle, starting and ending with PP.  You start in one, send to the other, and that's the end of the trip.  No more sends.

As Seb said, please be more specific, what exactly is happening. Also please give us some more info about your graphics card, the language version you are using and any peripherals you may be using. The issue you are seeing sounds like a misinterpretation of a menu command which could be caused by some custom function key kicking in or the system recording a mouse-click in na invisible region due to a miscommunication between the graphics driver and the mouse. Likewise, some foreign languages use keyboard mappings that may interfere with some of AE's commands. Something like that for sure....

  • Problems with lighting in After Effects CC using Mavericks

I recently upgraded to Mavericks this week and installed the Adobe patch so that AE CC will work properly. I am having issues in a comp where I have an ambient light placed in the comp with no keyframes throughout the comp. As I scrub through the timeline, the light suddenly shuts off at a specific point in the timeline. When I render the comp into a .mov file, the light is definately shut down at that point with no keyframe.
In addition, I have added a spotlight to a different comp, moved the start and end of the light to the place I need it. When I scrub through the timeline, the light is coming on about 5 seconds in advance of where I directed it to come on. When I go to a point before the the light is initiated via a keyframe, and the light is on, I click on the "eye" to disable the light and it does shut off. Neither of these were issues in AE CC before Mavericks as far as I am aware.
Can anyone confirm that they have had a similar issue or is there a known fix yet! Thanks to all of the engineers at Adobe for your amazing assistance!

There MUST be a simple answer to this problem....
There is a simple answer indeed.
    Here it is:
The highlighted button in the Comp panel enables Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) Correction.
So, instead of stretching the footage horizontally, you create a Composition with the same frame aspect and Pixel Aspect Ratio as your source footage (just drag the clip to the New Comp button in the project panel and AE will automate this) and then enable PAR correction and After Effects will give you a corrected (deanamorphized) preview so you won't see it squeezed at all on a computer monitor. When you export it, it will look squeezed until you take it to the target video application. Any professional video application will handle this correctly.Millions of people do this every day, since non-square pixels are still dominant among the most popular video formats.
Even Photoshop has had support for non-square pixels (and PAR correction in the document panel) since CS (ie. Photoshop 8.0).
Note that when you turn on PAR correction (just like when you use odd magnification levels) AE switches to a draft filtering mode, which makes type and other elements look a bit jagged. Don't worry, it's just a preview.
The ideal solution, and the one video professionals rely on, is adding video output hardware to your computer, so you can connect a professional video monitor. After Effects can provide a live preview using such a set-up.
For more information on PAR, see Pixel aspect ratio and frame aspect ratio in After Effects Help.

  • Does After Effects CC use CompressorTranscoderX?

I am running After Effects CC and do also use Final Cut Pro X although I am about to switch to Premiere. I am noticing some real slowdowns in After Effects when I have let me computer sit for a few minutes and come back to it. When I look at the Acivity monitor when it is busy, CompressorTranscoderX and Adobe QT32 Server are showing as not responding and Red. Sometime, Adobe After Effects is also showing as not responding. I do not have Final cut running and am not aware if AE is using this CompressorTranscoderX? I am creating a video with a quite large 3D model. I am running Mavericks OSX 10.9 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX.

  • After Effects only opens the top bar.

Just recently I have started up after effects cs6, and the start-up and the new project will come up. But when i click, create new project, the top bar only comes up.(the bar that has the red x and the yellow - and the green +) I tried uninstallin it and re-installing it but it continues! Please Help! I am on a mac version 10.6.8
You can only see the bar at the top

I have seen this occasionally and the solution is to delete the preferences file and re-launch. This is easily done by holding down Alt/Option + Ctrl/Cmnd + shift and clicking the AE icon on your dock to open AE. That should fix your problem. If it does not, reboot the computer and try deleting the preferences again before you open AE...
