After Effects: Out Of Memory

Okay I'm trying to render out a minute long comp. I have it set to render to a 1280x720 .mov using the Photo-Jpeg codec. However, everytime I try to render it'll get part way through then say "After Effects: Out Of Memory". I've tried purging the cache and stuff. I have 8gb of free space on my HDD and 2gb of ddr2 memory. I could really use some help here as this is probably my best work to date.

Anyways do you have any other suggestions on how I could get this to work?
Don't use Photo-JPEG or any other compressed Codecs! From inside AE that is. What happens here is that the additional math transformations (discrete cosinus transforms [DCT] and other geek stuff) required to let the compression do its thing also take up valuable memory and it may actually be that part that prevents you from creating your movies. At best, use "simple" RLE compression as employed by the Animation CoDec (which, depending on the image content may even be more efficient than Photo-JPEG). If, for some reason you need specific CoDecs, then do the compression externally using Quicktime Pro or, should you require H.264 and other MPEG derivates, with ffmpeg or similar tools. AVIs can easily be created with VirtualDub and it even supports some QT formats, so there are some free options as well. And of course in CS4 there's Adobe Media Encoder for such tasks... And another tip to improve behavior: render to image files (TIFFs), then convert the image sequences in a second go. This will prevent AE from having to keep open a large movie file to append frames in the first pass, which will make it more reliable.

Mmh, yes, indeed that very likely would be to blame on Quicktime. You probably had better luck with CS3 which handles H.264 natively via MediaCore. My guess that it is simply some odd allocation of the compression which could be fixed, probably even a simple export from QT Pro to the same format. Do the files correctly play in QT player? As an alternative to QT Pro I recommend attempting to run it thru SUPER©, which is free. Perhaps this will repair the streams and prevent the errors. If not, you will have to shelve out some money or find otehr ways of converting your footage, I'm afraid.

  • "Out of memory" while importing AVI  type (AJA) file with AE CS3

With After Effects CS3 (version 8.0.2.27) when we import an AVI type (AJA) file greater than 2Gigs captured by an another PC with a Xena board AJA , a message window appears : After Effects: Out of memory.(945949kK requested) (23 :: 40). If we import the same file with After Effects CS2 (version: 7.0.1) we have no problem. If we import an AVI (AJA) file smaller than 2 Gigs with AE CS3 no problem
appears. If we capture an AVI type (Matrox) file greater than 2Gigs and import this one with AE CS3 no message appears. If we import a MOV type (AJA) file greater than 2 Gigs no problem appears with AE CS3. So to bypass this problem we are working with footage captured in MOV type file AJA. The PC which the AE CS3 is running has 4 Gigs of RAM with 2 Xeon Quad CPU.
    Thanks
    Marc

Most likely an issue with MediaCore trying to take over and then not getting it right... Have you checked with AJA? maybe they know something about it.

  • Program monitor constantly freezing/stalling when playing dynamically linked After Effects comps

I'm having program monitor issues when I try to play dynamically linked After Effects comps from my Premiere timeline. I realize it's expected to have jerky playback since After Effects comps are memory and CPU intense, but it doesn't seem normal for these things to happen:
Sometimes during playback, the program monitor completely freezes while audio continues to play and the CTI continues to move along timeline. When this happens, there's no way to stop the playback at all using mouse or keyboard... so I'm forced to just quit Premiere and re-open project.
Program monitor can also freeze when I place the CTI on top of the After Effects comp. Sometimes if I wait a minute, the screen could update and eventually display the After Effects comp.
I'm unable to render effects on the Premiere timeline because it just hangs at "Rendering frame 0" and never advances forward.
There's nothing special about the After Effects comp I'm linked to... it could just be regular text that I animated using ease keyframes and motion blur.
I originally thought it was related to GPU settings but it doesn't make a difference if I set After Effects to use CPU instead of GPU or set Premiere's Mercury Playback engine to software, CUDA, or openGL. I even have the latest CUDA drivers installed on my Mac. But I must mention that this issue got significanly worst after updating to OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
    Here's my system details:
    OSX 10.9 Mavericks
    Premiere 7.0.1 (105)
After Effects 12.0.1.7 (I installed the OS X Mavericks crash update fix)
The most prevalent error messages displayed in the OSX console is:
Adobe Premiere Pro CC[402]: dynamic_cast error 1: Both of the following type_info's should have public visibility.  At least one of them is hidden. N5dvaui2ui8MessageTIKNS0_7UI_NodeEEE, N5dvaui8controls23UI_PictureSupplyMessageE.
Here's a few that are less common:
    Adobe Premiere Pro CC[402]: [PremiereCocoaMacApplication handleMenuCommand:1633841013 from <DVAMacMenuItem: 0x6100002f8300 About Premiere Pro>]
After Effects[377]: -[NSMenu menuID]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x600000077080
If anybody has any ideas or suggestions, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks,

I think I found the problem... OSX Mavericks introduced a power saving feature called App Nap that basically slows down an app that appears to be doing nothing or is minimized in the background.
So essentually when I try to display an After Effects dynamically linked comp via my Premiere timeline, it freezes because OSX put After Effects to sleep.
To fix this, I had to disable the App Nap feature on After Effects. Now everything is performing back at pre-Mavericks levels (which is about 10% stalling playback issues vs 90% stalling). I also noticed that all of the console errors went away.
To disable App Nap in OSX...
    Go to your Applications folder
Expand the After Effects CC folder
Right-click on "Adobe After Effects CC.app" and select Get Info
Add a checkmark beside "Prevent App Nap"
    Restart the application
I also did this with all my Adobe apps just to be safe.
    Hope this helps

Since you run AE 9, it's probably your footage.  Okay, it's the most likely cause, at least.  Here's a copy 'n paste response I used to use a LOT  on the Creative COW:
    Dave's Stock Answer #1:
If the footage you imported into AE is  any  kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, AVCHD, mp4, mts, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.
These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information.  However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information.  Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.
In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.
I'm a Mac guy, so I like to convert to Quicktime movies in the Animation or PNG codecs; both are lossless.  I'll

hi all, i'm having all kinds of problems with after effects cs4. the current problem i'm having is i'll be working on a project, it starts to slow down and become unresponsive, i try to save but then it crashes and everything i've done is lost. opengl is off but i don't think that's the problem because opengl isn't affecting any of my other programs like cinema 4d and i even tried taking out the opengl from the plugins folder but i was still getting opengl error messages with certain effects like the rotoscoping effect. i was wondering if maybe this might be a codec problem since i heard that ae loads codecs at start. how can i find out if a corrupted codec is affecting my after effects?

    >how can i find out if a corrupted codec is affecting my after effects?
You remove them all! ;-) I think you are going about this the wrong way.
a)If you ever installed any third-party CoDecs manually, they will be listed in the "Add or Remove Programs" section or have an uninstaller.
b)If those CoDecs were auto-installed e.g. via a web-browser, they will leave traces in the extension lists or even appear as separate entries somewhere as well.
    c) If the CoDecs were part of a program, then by all rights, you really should know which programs those are and know how to remove them.
Failing that, simply uninstall Quicktime completely. Reinstall it from scratch. Likewise, manually download a full install of Windows Media Player and reinstall it using the "Repair" option. Everything else is pure specualtion - AE may scan your CoDecs on startup, but if you never import any footage using them, they will not be initialized and not cause trouble.
And honestly: That Mac talk is not worth a dime. Final Cut Pro alone comes with 30 or so extra CoDecs, many of which have been known to be just as troublesome to use with Adobe products and you can encounter the same situation easily any time...

  • How do I edit out background objects in CS 4 Premiere Pro or After Effects?

Hi,  I've got the CS4 version of Premiere Pro and After Effects.  I'm editing a seminar video and there is a very ugly metal bar right behind the speaker, looking as though it is going right through his head.  Is there a way to edit this out?  I do not have similar footage without the metal bar.  Can I cover it up and, if I do, do I have to do it almost frame by frame?  The speaker does shift around in his chair, covering different parts of the bar with his body at different times, and, on a few occasions, the camera zooms out.  Is there any way to somehow cover this up for the whole video?  Or at least for some of the close-ups?
    Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Thank you so much.  I read through the entire article as well as some of its adjuncts; it was very helpful.  I believe I didn't know that was what I was looking for before you answered me.
However, when I FIRST set up this computer (while still at the Apple store, with their guidance) they had me set up what I now believe was the administrator account.  I wish I knew for sure!
They told me that (whatever it was) was unchangeable, and that if I forgot the password, I was doomed.
Is there something at a yet-more-basic (underlying) level than the administrator account?
This "memory" is what haunts me and makes me fearful of logging clear out; I never have done so.  No one else uses this computer.  But I have to log out to use the Test account (that I just created).  I DO know the password for the administrator account and the test account, as I changed them and tested them by unclicking the lock (and then reclosing it when I was.
If I still sound confused, I am  ~  woefully.  Such a basic should not be unknown to me......
Thank you so much for replying.  I hope you see this, and will do so one more time.

  • How To Stop After Effects From Knocking Out My Internet Connection As It Is Downloading?

    Greetings,
Yesterday, January 20, 2015, I purchased an annual subscription to After Effects.  And, after numerous attempts at downloading the software with the same abysmal results, I am now going to the forums for a possible remedy.  Everything goes well in beginning my download, including getting my McAfee Anti-virus program to accept Adobe Creative Cloud, however after a few minutes, the download process knocks out my Internet connection, forcing me to re-boot.  I do receive two back-to-back error messages; none of which are listed by Adobe set of error messages in their FAQ section.
The first one reads:  "Core: Creative Cloud - Application Error.  The instruction at 0x100014a0 referenced memory at 0x100014a0.  The memory could not be written."  The second error message is likened to the first, only with a different number...
"94% Complete: explorer.exe - Application Error.  The instruction at 0x80001610 referenced memory at 0x80001610.  The memory could not be written."
Finally, do you know if I can bypass all of this trouble by having Adobe After Effects disks shipped to me?  Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    Joy in the Lord,
    A. Landis Jones

    Greetings,
And thank you both, Mylenium & Dave.  After I compose this note, I am going to mark your answers as correct.  I just wanted to write this qualifier, first.  I tried to do as both of you suggested, however, I could not figure out how to disable McAfee Anti-Virus.  I did manage to turn off McAfee Firewall.  And when that was done, I tried to download After Effects.  However, that trick did not work the first couple of times I tried it.  A few re-boots later, After Effects (as well as some unknown program I did not expect called Media Encoder) finally downloaded on my computer.
After I began this thread, I recalled that, oftentimes, when I view YouTube videos online, the same thing happens - my Internet connection gets disrupted.  Then I remembered that the trouble began when my computer crashed and I tried to re-install Windows 8.1 Pro.  So, maybe that is the real culprit - my system crash, that is.  A little while ago, I tested viewing YouTube videos to no avail.  So, I am suspecting that your solution to turn off my anti-virus (in my case, my firewall) did the trick, and I thank you two, Mylenium & Dave, mightily.
    May you have many blessings.

  • Error Out Of Memory Due to Digi Effects

Hello everyone, got a bit of a tricky situation to troubleshoot :/
Before you ask here's my iMac info http://gyazo.com/0648a1d03fb15935117894dd6716ffbc
Ok so the problem is, I'm making this video and its having a lot of distortion effects added to it within FCP 7 using the plugin Digi Effects Damage "Blockade". Now I had a sequence which had just enough memory to use it on all the clips I needed. However, I sent that sequence to Color and sent it back to FCP and in my new 'color sequence' I can watch the whole thing through in real time with safe RT and unlimited RT, however there is this colour http://gyazo.com/d022bf802fb82d76d191a004ddcbc387 above all the clips that have the plugin on.
Although I can watch it through in playback mode, when I render, after a few seconds it says Error: Out of memory.
Here are my general sequence settings http://gyazo.com/a270414e2c2d38cb1274f8f84f507383
I am using clips in the pro res 422 format. Any ideas? :/

    Hi
Out of memory use to refere to amount of
    • RAM
    • free Space on Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk - VERY IMPORTANT
    • Space availably on Hard Disk/s That holde the Movie Material
    RAM
Never been a problem to me - 2 resp 5Gb dep on Mac used
    Free Space on Boot HD
I never go under 25Gb free space - when working on SD-Video project's - I guess that 4 - 5 times more will be a safe level when doing HD. This space HAS TO be just here as Mac OS works like UNIX (it is in fact) and then produces lot's of temp. files that can not be stored elsewhere and so does FinalCut (or whatever application running)
    Space to keep Movie Project
    • Should be on other hard disks than the Boot HD.
    • Should be as fast as possibly - RAIDed, FireWire or Thunderbolt - USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up and when holding HD-material
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - this goes for all Video editing - iMovie, FinalCut or Adobe etc.
    • This too can fill up - So this space is also important
What memory that are not sufficiant - is hard to guess - when You don't tell the above figure.
    Good Luck in finding it
    Yours Bengt W

  • "timed out obtaining dynamiclink server connection" in After Effects

I've seen a lot of other people have this same problem, none of the solutions ive seen are working for me.
Problem appears when i try to track camera, it goes to 'analyzing in background' then after 2 minutes or so it gives me the "timed out obtaining dynamiclink server connection" error pop-up.
    Mac OSX 10.7.5
    Using Adobe After effects CC
    2 x 2.4ghx quad-core intel xeon
    15gb ddr3 ram
I've uninstalled Logmein which appeared as a problem in one of the solutions but that hasn't changed anything. Don't have a firewall running. Tried uninstalling After Effects CS6 and After Effects CC and then reinstalling After Effects CC. Dynamiclinkmanager pops up in activity monitor intermittently, it comes and goes repeatedly when i try to 'Track Camera' but never shows any actual use of memory.
Is anyone able to offer help?
Could it be some confusion in preferences / library files between my CS6 installs and CC installs?

  • Photoshop keeps on getting out of memory error after installing Premier Pro

I just upgrade my CS to CC. Yesterday I installed Photoshop and did my work without any problem but today after installing Premier and After Effect, I keep on getting out of memory error when I'm working even though I don't have any other application running accept photoshop alone. The file I'm working on is a small file, iphone plus size interface. Basically I can open the file, add blur effect and try to type text I will get photoshop telling me that my system is out of memory. Restarting photoshop give the same problem, restarting my computer give the same problem, ie do one thing and next will give memory not enough.
I don't think my system is slow as it is workstation with dual processor and 12 gig of ram, windows 7 64bits 1gb dedicated memory for graphic card.
I uninstall Premier and After Effect and suddenly the problem go away. Photoshop work as per normal. I didn't have the time to reinstall premier again but will try to do it tonight or tomorrow
    Anyone experience such problem before?

When you get that error leaver the error showing and use something the can show you how much free disk space there is left on Photoshop scratch disk.  It may be a problem with scratch storage space not ram storage space.  I see Photoshop use much more scratch space the ram.  I have seen Photoshop using less than 10GB of ram on my machine leaving 30GB of free ram on my system unused while using over 100GB of scratch space.

  • Memory and Multiprocessing results in After Effects are Inconsistent (Mac Pro)

I'm trying to "optimize my system" by doing memory and multithreading benchmarks but the results are completely unpredictable when I don't use "multiple frames simultaneously."  My results are fast sometimes, slow others.  When I do use "Render multiple frames simultaneously" my times are consistant but generally slower.  So strange.  Premiere screams but crashes a lot.
ANYONE KNOW ANY MAC TWEAKS TO GET MORE JUICE OUT OF THESE PROCESSORS?
    Here's my configuration.
Mac Pro OS Mountain Lion (Culprit?)
    After Effects CS6 (all updates)
    2x3.46 ghz 6-core intel xeon
    64gb of RAM
nvidea geforce gtx 570 open cl / cuda enabled
    Crazy Raid 1400 R & W 1400mb/s

The biggest problem with the multiprocessor settings and memory assignment is that there are only a few plug-ins that are truly multiprocessor aware. There are also codecs that are not multi processor friendly. If your source footage has an unfriendly codec then turning multi processor on many actually slow the project down.
So I guess it's just as Mylenium said, "There is no one size fits all solution." I never have render multiple frames simultaneously turned on for layout, animation, and set up. Almost all of my motion work is done at half or quarter resolution. If I think a project will benefit by enabling the multiprocessor feature I will run a few tests before I render. Most of the time I just load a comp into the AME and let that pound away while I'm working on the next project. Overall I think that's the most efficient workflow. I don't get paid much for rendering, but I do get paid when I produce.
