After Effects Preview (CUDA)

Hey,
i got a Problem with After Effects CC with the (Live "Render") Preview.
I activated on the Settings my GPU for Preview rendering, but that won't work.
After Effects tells me that my GPU is using OpenGL 2.1.2, but that is not correct my GPU supports 4.3 (Lastest Drivers, GeForce 335.23 WHQL)
GPU: ASUS DirectCUII OC GTX780
CPU: i7 2600k @ 4.7Ghz
RAM: 16GB
before i used CS6 with 2x AMD HD 6970 were 1 GPU has been used for Preview rendering, but nVidia don't work.
Can someone help me?

  • After Effects preview help

    I'm struggling to understand how my AE play and preview performance is so bad. I've seen the generic posts on AE performance but I'm wondering if I'm doing something pathologically wrong here given the severity of the problem.
    I'm new to AE on the Mac, I used it some on the PC. I have a new iMac 5k 4GHz w/ 32GB RAM. I'm running After Effects CC 2014. I've loaded in a 21 second 1920x1080 @60Hz clip. I've not touched anything beyond loading in the clip, not created any content at all, yet it plays back with RAM preview at 10Hz.
    I set the image preview size to custom 25x25 pixels, so the image I'm looking at is something you might see on an old Commodore 64:
    And it still only goes 30Hz.
    Is there some default setting that could be sinking my performance? Or is 1920x1080@60 just not going to play back?

    It should playback correctly but to say what could be issue with your playback please send us some more specs:
    - how many discs you have on your comp?
    - is any of your disc SSD or just Hdd
    - if you have only HDDs tell us if you have any other software that is reading/writing on that disc when you try to play that clip on AE
    In my opinion in your case the HDD will be that bottle neck that slow down everything.

  • After Effects Preview Resolutions and Pixel Bender

    Hi,
    Hopefully this is a simple fix. I've encountered an issue with PB filters and After Effects's variable preview resolution. Consider this simple kernel:
    <languageVersion : 1.0;>
    kernel gridTest
    <   namespace : "quarterlightpictures.com";
        vendor : "Quarterlight Pictures";
        version : 1;
    >
        input image4 src;
        output pixel4 dst;
        void evaluatePixel() {
            float2 coordFloored = floor(outCoord());
            dst.rgb = float3(0.0);
            if(mod(coordFloored.y, 50.0) < 1.0)
                dst.rgb = float3(1.0);
            dst.a = 1.0;
    All it does is draw some 1px thick horizontal lines 50 pixels apart. This is fine, of course. However if I set the preview resolution in After Effects to 1/2, the lines are no longer drawn - the comp goes completely black. What I'd expect is the output to be subsampled in AE, and the lines to become 2px thick, but half as bright, which is what happens if I add a Grid effect and do the same.
    At 1/3 and 1/4 resolution the lines do appear sporadically - but not everywhere theyr'e supposed to be - and are drawn 3 and 4 pixels thick accordingly.
    Does PB work pre-or-post down-res? In other words, does a PB filter run, send its output to AE's comp window and then gets down-ressed for preview (if the resolution isn't full), or does it down-res the dource and pass it to PB? If it's the former then it should just work as I expect. If it's the latter, then are my source dimensions becoming halved, or are my pixel sizes becoming 2x2?
    Hope that makes sense. This is causing an issue with a plugin I wrote using PB, with things disappearing when adaptive resolution kicks in.
    Thanks,
    Christian

    I've figured it out.
    If you test like so, it works!
         dst.rgb = float3(0.0);
         if(mod(coordFloored.y, 50.0) < pixelSize(src).y)
                dst.rgb = float3(1.0);
            dst.a = 1.0;

  • After Effects preview problem

    hey guys im an after effects editor , and i used to have a crappy pc , so i decided i'll collect some money and get a powerful pc ,and indeed i bought one , here's the specs :-
    CPU : Intelcore i7 4770 @3.40 GHz
    RAM : 8gb
    GPU : Geforce GTX 650
    OS : Windows 7 Ultimate
    Motherboard : ASROCK z87 Extreme 3
    Power supply : Strike-x 600W
    i bought this pc like before two months , and it was really incredible i could render Element 3D videos in no time , and i could watch my edits while editing in Full Resolution , it was like a dream coming true , but unfortunately last week something weird happened , my pc suddenly got slow and somebody changed my skype password and i knew it was a hacker but i got rid of him by changing some setting and my ip , but now my after effects is still slow , and i'm really pissed i mean i paid like ( 1600 $ ) for this pc , so any solutions please ?

    hmm well im not sure man i don't think its about my machine specs , anyway bro im an editor but not that serious im in High School , and here's one of my edits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J7ha0M2kV0 , so just you know that im not like really seroius .

  • After effects preview is greyed out

    I saved my AE file correctly and closed the program. Now, when I reopen the file, I can see everything was saved yet the preview will not work. I can do everything else except preview it, I cannot even see the footage at all. What can I do, what is the issue? This has happened before but I did something and it worked again. I do not want to keep guessing what the solution is, please help. I have scrolled through the view tab, but I do not see anything that would allow me to see my preview screen...

    What is a "preview screen" in your vocabulary? A Comp Viewer? A layer Viewer? A source Viewer? From your description it sounds like you actualyl haven't created a comp and the project is simply opening without the comp viewer, which automatically will appear once you actualyl create one. and of course perhaps check your workspace and reset to the default one...

  • After Effects Rendering stops is away from PC

    Hello,
    I'm having a lot of troubles with a relative simple project, I have five h.264 1080p 5d MKii files i've mounted on premiere timeline 1280*720 25p (totally 4 minutes) after that i've sent to After Effects via dynamic link, and done some simple lumakeying, i realized a fake studio with white background and a 3d logo (VC Element 3d) that stands near the actor, after i added dome simple camera movement and basic color correction.
    Now im experiencing tremendous rendering time trough Adobe Premiere Pro 6-28 hours (for only 4 minutes of video), at the end the file is corrupted. After effects preview fawless, scrolling mouse at full resolution is very fast almost realtime.
    Now i am experiencing extremely long time also with queue rendering. I've noticed that AE renders only if i'm moving the mouse if i stop moving rendering goes on "pause", with gpu and cpu at 100%.
    I have an Asus G750JX 4700hq 3.4ghz (on TURBOBOST) 32gb RAM (1600mhz Corsair CL9), gtx770m (3gb DDR5 VRAM), 2 SSD one for OS another for AE Caching, External USB3 7200RPM (160mbps) for footage. AE and Premiere CC, W8.1.
    I've tried to transcode source h.264 files to Animation, but nothing changes.
    Also on premiere if i keep moving the mouse (with a simple application) it renders in 20 Minutes but the file at the end is corrupted.
    I've also tried to disalble, enable Multicore Rendering, CUDA Engime, clean cache.
    I've never had this kind of problem.

    After 48 hours of headache, i found the problem, my sistem was infected by a Trojan that uses th GPU when IDLE for mining... so no problem when working on timeline but low performance when i was away from pc... i removed the virus, killing the proces: sistemewhileidle.exe and clean the users/temp folder where the virus was stored after i searched for entries in the system reg and delete.

  • How to render/export fast in Adobe After Effects CC

    Hi,
    How can I export and render fast in Adobe After Effects, I bought a new PC but it's not quick enough in my opinion.
    I want to export a 1920*1080 60FPS project, 10 seconds long. It takes a very long time.
    I have already set my GPU as processor but if I start the render and look at my GPU usage, After Effects won't use it.

    > I have already set my GPU as processor but if I start the render and look at my GPU usage, After Effects won't use it.
    After Effects uses the GPU for almost nothing. See this page for details of GPU features in After Effects:

    > A ''verry long time'' is 10 minutes for a 10 second video.
    10 minutes is not a long time for a 10-second movie with visual effects, compositing, 3D, or many other kinds of computationally intensive processing. Often, people leave 30-second movies overnight or over the weekend to render. This is true for all aoftware that does this kind of work, not just After Effects.

  • Export quality in After Effects

    I'm using After Effects CS4 and have exported as an MPEG-4.  The quality of the final movie is very poor.  It looks like a low quality JPEG.  In After Effects preview, it looks fine.
    I'm familiar with exporting quality videos out of Premiere.  Is the usual workflow to open AE projects in Premiere and use the options there to export?  Or am I missing something in AE?

    That may be, but I'm just not a fan.  I did some tests a few years ago and decided that Animation
    wasn't worth it and that it was in fact creating artifacts in my renders.
    Just to show my work, I am pulling some info from wikipedia as a reference:
    "For complex 3D rendered scenes or digitized film of real-world footage, it barely compresses at all and also can add visible noise."
    Now I know, wikipedia isn't highly reliable, anyone can edit it, blah blah blah, but this statement runs congruent to my own findings.  Add to that the weighty file size, and then the fact that this codec is officially my ENEMY because my students, who are instructed to use Sorenson 3, often forget to change the codec for their .mov renders, and so sometimes I get these bloated files that I have to trash and they have to re-render, and I just don't really care for this codec at all.
    I just don't render video any more.  Haven't for a long time now.  So many advantages to using img sequences, I haven't looked back to big bloated video files.

  • How do I import Flash with 3-D into After Effects?

    Every time I import a SWF file that has 3-D in it, into after effects the file doesn't work.
    How do I make this happen?

    Hi Mylenium, Thank you. I had actually tried exporting it as a png sequence before writing this, however, I screwed up and forgot After Effects Preview mode was set to 50% so I thought that the png sequence was horribly pixilated... My bad... You suggested that I go back and try it again and it worked excellently. Thanks.

  • Cuda in premiere cs6 and After Effects 670 GTX

    I'm trying to activate cuda in those programs but the option appears LOCK, why?
    I bought that graphic card mostly because of that... O my god any idea please?
    I know I have to change something but I don't want to make a mistake or something THANKS.

    Ok, guys so what i did was to put the name of my graphic card in the .txt bla bla, and now it detect it and I can activate, then in setting nvidia control panel I've change one thing that I've seen in two videos and now it works BUT...
    In after effects O GOD I can see everything so FLUID... but in premiere with few effects it works like if my CPU was doing the JOB I mean I can't see anything different why?
    EDIT: YOU HAVE TO CHANGE PREVIEW FROM FULL TO HALF OR LESS, you know what i mean... Works Fine Thanks,

  • RAM Preview Problems in After Effects CC

    AE CS 6 RAM Previews work, but two problems to report with AE CC on the same computer. Possibly two faces of the same problem.
    1. Having QuickTime Player open while doing a RAM preview makes the RAM preview stutter. I quit the player, and now the RAM preview plays back without dropping a frame, though Info palate shows "fps: 24 (realtime)", but the RAM preview playback is slow: ie, a tenor sounds like a baritone.
    2. A RAM preview that looked and sounded fine last night, is now playing back slowly (tenor sounds like a baritone), though Info Palate shows "fps: 24 (realtime)". I have no other applications open. The only thing that changed is that I quit AE, slept the computer, slept a little myself, and then launched AE. Trashing the cache files (manually), rebooting, relaunching and re-RAM-previewing creates a functional RAM preview, so I assume there is some problem with the cached files or the retrieval of them.
    Is anyone else getting either of these? If so, what is your system configuration?
    Also, I posted on another thread that Quicktime import/render works with AE CS6 on this computer, but AE CC can not import, play, or render QT reliably (without throwing error messages). Perhaps all of this is part of the same problem.
    Thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Benjamin

    96 GB RAM is  accessible in 10.8.4 on my machine according to OWC. I'm working on a stereoscopic 4K project with large files and hundreds of layers. I regurlarly render with AE MP while working with huge files in PS, and am glad to see the % of RAM AE uses displayed in my render cue between 3 and 60%.
    I have 12 processors (24 with hyperthreading)
    I have reserved 10 for other applications leaving 14 for After Effects
    4 GB per x 14 = 56 GB for AE. leaving 40 GB for everything else
    I've played with what and how much I have allocated being sure to keep the CPU counts even, but this does not fix the RAM preview problems described above. Any other suggestions?

  • After Effects CC failed renders, RAM preview useless

    Hi there,
    I'm having some strange issues with After Effects, the sort that I've never experienced before.
    I'm animating a 5-second sequence with nine layers, each with video copilot's "Twitch" effect plugin added. The comp is big, set to 4000 x 4000 px.
    When I go to RAM preview on full resolution, I only get ten frames of the comp previewed before it loops from that point. Spacebar preview returns the same result (it freezes at ten frames). I tried exporting the comp, but it returns "Failed at 00:00:02." I created a new 1920x1080 comp and tried again with scaled down source material but the same effects occur, this time further down the timeline at about 3 seconds. Can't RAM preview, Spacebar preview or export beyond that point. If I trim the comp to just before the problem frames at 3 seconds, I can successfully export.
    I'm running a brand new macbook pro (2.3 GHz, 16gb RAM, Nvidia Geforce GT 750M [CUDA enabled]) and the project is located on the internal SSD. OSX 10.9. After Effects is the latest update available 12.2.1.5.
    Any ideas? I've not found anything in any forums dealing with this specifically. I think I have an OSX update due actually - I'll check to see if this does something interesting and report back!
    Cheers!

    Hi Todd and AlpineEdits,
    I deleted Twitch from the plugins folder and ran a few tests - everything seems fine.
    I reinstalled Twitch, but used perhaps an older version - I didn't use the 64-bit specific plugin provided as part of the download package. The same sequence now previews seamlessly and fast too.
    Seems that Twitch causes strange little AE hiccups!
    Thanks so much for the simple suggestions, worked a charm.

  • Raw Preview error on After Effects CC

    Hi there ... i am having some trouble whith this error and o don't know how to fix it.
    I have download the after effcts CC via Creative Cload ... and it was working fine until a few weeks ago.
    But now every time i want to make a RAW PREVIEW on a project composition ... it shows me the following error "After Effects error: Raw Previem needs 2 or more frames to playback".
    This is the frist time i had this problem ... i have seached the net, for solutions and the only thing that worked th frist time was to Purge the All Memory and Disc Cache, but now that does not work
    Can someone please tell me the solution please ??
    Regards ASilva

    Lol ... i was ready to send a screen shot an try to reply those answer ... and the damn after effects is working again ... don't ask me why because i don't know.
    but either way here are the answers and my replys:
    1- What exact version of After Effects?
    R: Downloaded After effects Creative Cloud and instaled the program from there so i guess i have After effects CC version 12.2.1
    2- Have you installed the recent updates?
    R: no i haven't i have instaled the program 2/3 weeks ago ... and do i need to have the Creative Cloud intaled to do them ?? my teacher said i needed to unistal it.
    3- Operating system and Machine i use are on my profile
    4- What versions of drivers for your graphics hardware do you have installed (including CUDA driver and driver for display adapter) ?
    R: I have the 334.89 graphic controler from Nvidia, and PhysX - 9.13.1220, Virtual Audio 1.2.20 also from Nvidia
    5- Do you have any third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU)?
    R: No i only have a cooler and a mouse
    6- What kind(s) of source footage?
    R: humm i don't know i use normal .mp3 musics from the net and .wav and use images .jpg and .png
    7- If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
    R: "After Effects error: Raw Previem needs 2 or more frames to playback"
    8- What were you doing when the problem occurred?
    R: Nothing ... i simpli completed the project ... Cloud prewiew it once ... and then caput ... could not do more prewiews
    9- Do you have QuickTime installed.
    R: No i don't have ... my teacher said it was not necessary.
    10- What other software are you running?
    R: Right now ... i have Bridge, Audition, After Efects, Ilustrator, Photoshop, Flash, Indesing, Premier and Dreamweaver, instaled on my PC ... i also Have Blender a 3D Program, don't know if it is important though.
    11- Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?
    R: Do you consider Video Coplilot 3D element and Red Giant Trapcodes effects and MPC Codec pack in this category ... then yes i have.
    These last questions i don't understand what you meant by them so i left them
    Are you using OpenGL features in After Effects?
    Does the problem only happen with your final output, RAM preview, or both?
    Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing?
    Are you using the ray-traced 3D renderer?
    If the problem is with output, give your exact output settings (both render setting and output module settings). Screenshots help.
    What is the exact sequence of steps that you are taking?
    With Regards ASilva
    PS: Tomorrow will see if it gives me the error again

  • After Effects CS6 error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback - any ideas please?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running After Effects CS6 (11.0.4.2) on a MacBook Pro 2.8Ghz with 16GB RAM (Mac OS 10.9.4)
    As a test, I created a 3 and a half minute Sequence in Adobe Premiere CS6, and then imported this into After Effects CS6, and placed it on the AE timeline.
    This footage involves a couple of 1920x1080p footage movies, some psds and a large number of JPGs exported from two videos arranged as a sequence in two layers in Premiere, one on top of the other. So all in all for a Premiere / After Effects file I'd say it's reasonably heavy.
    I then did a RAM Preview with Multiprocessing switched off - the 3 and a half minute sequence loaded into RAM, taking about 1min 30seconds, and played back in realtime at 25fps. This worked fine with 3,4,5 and 6 GB RAM available to other applications in the Memory Preferences. All things considered I think this is quite good. I can make changes, reclick the RAM Preview icon and my changes load into RAM and it previews ok.
    My only 'complaint' is how long the RAM Preview takes to load up the whole thing.
    I've been reading up on Multiprocessing and decided to try this to see if I can speed up the time it takes my RAM Preview to load up.
    So I looked at some recommendations from Adobe and read information on various forums including this one.
    My settings in the Memory Preferences are currently
    • 6GB reserved for other applications
    • Reduce cache size when system is low on memory - unticked
    • After Effects Multiprocessing - ticked
    • Installed CPUs (processor cores) - 8
    • CPUs reserved for other applications - 6
    • RAM allocation per background CPU - 3GB
    • Actual CPUs that will be used - 2
    This combination takes about 25 seconds to load up my 3 and a half minute sequence which I thought was pretty amazing.
    I then pressed the stop button and then the play button - so now just playing the sequence briefly.
    And also added a new layer - into the timeline - just a simple shape.
    Then I tried a RAM Preview again.
    I found I could load up part of the sequence but not load the whole thing into RAM.
    I kept trying to get a RAM Preview and got this message
    "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" which seems to prevent RAM Preview from working.
    Eventually I quit and restarted After Effects and the problem went away temporarily and then came back when I tried again.
    I tried various changes to the Memory Preferences - trying 3GB available for other applications. This gave 13GB of my 16GB RAM to After Effects.
    This made it take slightly longer for the After Effects error to appear but it still appeared.
    I tried ticking Reduce Cache size in the Memory Prefs  - the After Effects error still appeared, so having read this is supposed to make the issue better I now leave it untucked, but as far as I can see ticked or untucked, it makes no difference, the problem remains.
    I've since tried -
    Making 2,3,4,5 and 6 CPUs available for other applications.
    Changing the Background RAM allocation per background CPU to 0.75GB, 1GB, 1.5GB, 2GB and 3GB
    Lots of combinations.
    But in the end, I always get the "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" error.
    It might take less or more time for the message to show up, depending on the combination of settings, but in the end I always got the same message appearing.
    And I notice that I can RAM Preview less and less of the timeline. i.e. it becomes more blue than it does green and will load in only a small section of the timeline as opposed to the whole thing.
    Reading further, I tried Edit > Purge > Image Cache and Edit > Purge > All Memory but still get the error message.
    I also tried ensuring there were no other applications running e.g. Safari or Chrome or Firefox. And certainly not Photoshop or Premiere etc.
    Reading even further, I tried two Memory management applications - 'Memory Clean' and 'Purge.'
    Neither has had any effect - the After Effects error still appears.
    Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
    I unticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously. And now the RAM Preview loads the whole 3 and half minute sequence in entirety, taking about 1 and half minutes to do so. It's working as perfectly as if I'd just quit and re-opened the application.
    Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
    I reticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously.
    The chose Edit > Purge > All
    And tried a RAM Preview again. It loaded up in 25 seconds, but then, as previously, the error message came.
    I tried Edit > Purge All - no effect.
    And I tried going into the Media and Disk Cache Preferences and clicked Empty Disk Cache - still the problem remains.
    I understand from my reading that After Effects CS6 11.0.2 was intended to fix this issue but I'm on 11.0.4 and as far as I can tell, I still have it - assuming it's the same thing.
    As far as I can see, not using Multiprocessing allows me to work without these errors but take a bit longer to load the RAM Preview.
    However I'd like to be able to use Multiprocessing as it seems it can potentially speeds things up quite a lot. I realise I could just not use it and AE would work, but I'd rather be able to make use of a feature of the software if possible, especially if it will speed things up and make optimum use of the my computer's hardware.
    I've downloaded a trial copy of After Effects CC 2014. I'm still testing it but as far as I can see the RAM Preview error appears in this version of AE as well, but can take bit longer to show up in my experience.
    Thanks everyone - if anyone has any thoughts or advice I'd appreciate hearing your opinions.
    Kind regards,
    John

    You need to have much more RAM reserved for other applications and more CPUs reserved for other applications. Your current settings are crippling your performance.
    Read these:
    https://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2009/12/performance-tip-dont-starve-yo.html

    After you have adjusted your settings according to the recommendations on those pages, restart your computer and try again.

  • After effects cc RAM preview problem

    I recently bought a new rig
    i7 4790K running at stock
    8gb 1866mhz corsair vengeance pro ram 2x4gb
    EVGA GTX 770 2gb superclocked
    WD Black 1TB 7200rpm
    Samsung 840 Pro 128gb
    Asus Z97-PRO motherboard
    I run AE and open a file and import my clip (59.94fps) and add twixtor and then hit ram preview to see if all is good and it either takes a little bit longer than it should
    or it would say "Rendering frame switching to foreground" When this happens all seems ok but after the preview I can not scroll through the timeline without lag and pixelation again like as if I havnt hit the ram preview. So it would have the green bar above the clips showing for the ram preview but once the preview is over I can scroll through the timeline for a second then the green bar goes away. I know that the pixelation is due to adaptive resolution
    but I have tried changing that to "fast draft" and the pixelation stops but still struggle to view in timeline. I have the preview resolution set to third or quarter.
    I thought that getting higher clocked ram would solve the problem atleast a little more. But not to much. So my main question is what am I doing wrong? Or how can I correctly setup AE or my computer to handle this?
    The main clip is actually 200fps but I go to File>Interperate footage>Main>Conform to framerate
    Changing it from 200fps to 59.94.
    My main frustration is I see videos of the kinds of clips I'm editing posted by kids that edited them and I think theres no way they have a pc as expensive as mine that would allow them to edit these clips. So Its gotta be something I'm doing wrong.
    Thank you to anyone that helps so much!

    Well, for starters, turn off MP rendering. That warning during RAM previews is a clear indication that you are using it and well, with just 8GB RAM it doesn't exactly make sense. The rest is too vague since you haven't provided any proper details about your source file, but suffice it to say that temporal mangling of any kind can have weird effects, even more so if your source files are compressed. Therefore the pertinent thing to do first would be to convert your file to an uncompressed intermediate format, including conforming it to your target framerate. In addition you may simply consider not using any fast previews or the disk cache at all. It is known to be flaky with temporal plug-ins. set your comp to Final quality to enforce software mode rendering.
