After Effects Render time extremely long

I am trying to render an After Effects CS6 composition that is 40 seconds long and 1080p with no video footage, just particle animation and logo. However when I add the comp to the render queue and begin the render, the estimated time shows 32 Hours! At the bootom it says 47% ram jused of 7.9 GB. What is going wrong?

Raj Nagar wrote:
Thanks for that, I don't have it on ray-traced 3d because in the top corner on the left it says Renderer: Classic 3d. So i think that seems fine, but I have 8 GB ram with second gen Core i5 boosted to 3.1 Ghz so i don't think that the setup is a problem.
As for the particles, they branch out in lines like branches into a circle. But I still think that 32h is overkill. Even after using the Quicktime codec with the H.264 setting, it still says 30+ hours.
Don't render to H.264. That requires huge amounts of processing overhead on top fo the rendering.
Make a duplicate of your comp. Set the end point to about 10 seconds. Turn off 75% of the layers. Render to the simplest codc in the selection, say, ProRes422LT.
Turn off layers and turn on 25% of the other layers. Render again.
Turn on the other 25%. Render
Turn on the last 25%. Render.
Now you should have a good idea of which layers or effects are messing you up. Tell us about it and we'll probably have some helpful suggestions.

  • After Effects - Render Time - MacBook Pro

    Hi Guys,
Just need some help. Here's my situation.
I own a 2.0GHz Duo Core Macbook Pro, with 1GB RAM,
and 128MB on my Radeon video card. I made a 30 second after effects (7.0 Professional, legit copy ) project last week, some simple camera fly thru's with motion blur and depth of field turned on. No other effects. It took me 4hours and 53 mins to render. Now here's my problem. I took the same project to work and rendered it on the Macpro that we have, it only takes 38 minutes. That's no suprise to me. But when i tried it on the MacBook Pro we also have at work, which is a core 2 duo, 2.33GhZ with 2GB RAM and 256MB Video Card, it only takes about 1 hour and 25 mins. So my question is, is my machine really that slow, 4 times longer than the 2.33Ghz MBP at work, or am i doing something wrong. The final output is uncompressed 8-bit. Please please help me! It's kinda frustrating... I'm running it on mac os x. Any after effects guru around? Or tweakmysters! Cheers guys!
    Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz 1GB 80G 128MB   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I tried it last nite, with the battery installed, it now take only about 2 hours and 30 minutes, 2 hours short!
It's amazing how things work, i've been trying to get a solution for this for weeks, everybody suggests something totally different. Some say i've got to upgrade my RAM and GPU RAM, others say different thingS. One guy even gave a long scientific explaination about my problem. Looks like the biggest problem has the simplest solution, eh? Thank you so much buddy! Will come to you with other problems in the future...heheheh...cheers!

  • How much benefit would I see in After Effects render times....

I am starting to do some TV commercials for the company I work for. I am using FCP for some editing but doing most of the heavy lifting in After Effects. The commercials contain a lot of green screened images, lots of moving graphics, some sound effects and video effects like gleams, etc.
I'm rendering a :30 commercial now using Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5. Setting are for MPEG-2, 1920x1080i, audio 48Hz. It is taking around 4 hours to render on my current machine:
    iMac 24: 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
My question is, what kind of speed improvement would I see moving to a new Quad Core 2.4GHz or 8 Core 2.4GHz MacPro?
    Thanks in advance.
    Lee

Set your sights higher and 3.33GHz 6-core would be one.
24-48GB RAM would be another item.
Lots of tips and ideas here though:

2,4GHz does not really shine or cut it.

  • Need help with after effects render engine setup

I use AE CS6 on a mac computer running Mountain Lion. I also own a PC running Windows 7, and I am wanting to use it to assist with network rendering. How do I install the after effects render engine on a PC, when all that I own is the Mac version of the software?
    Any help would be appreciated

Did you purchase a perpetual license for the software, or do you have a Creative Cloud Membership subscription?
If the former, you need to purchase an additional license to get the Windows version. If the latter, you can just download the Windows version as part of your subscription.

  • After Effects Render Engine Loads project over network then closes? Any advice please?

    Hi,
I have just started trying to use the After Effects Render Engine over the network. I have followed some online video's where you have to set the main project computer as Multi Machine output etc and then collect folder to a network drive then go to the node computers and open Render Engine and go to watch folder and point it to your files on the network drive. It finds the project and opens it but then instantly closes it and then continues to search.
    Where is this please?
Also I can't seem to tick "Skip Existing Files" in my project
    Kind Regards
    Joe

There is no built-in network render features in AE, so we probably need to see that video you are referring to.
A wild guess though, is that you are trying to render a video file, instead of an image sequence. "Skip Existing Files" only works with sequences. Anyway there is, to my knowledge, no way to make several machines write to the same video file. But you can start the project rendering an image sequence, from multiple computers, to the same network folder, and then use the "Skip Existing Files" feature to prevent overwriting the frames.

  • After effects rendering time is extremely slow

    hi,
i am having trouble with rendering in my after effect cs6. i have 8gb ram size on my mac book pro, which is extremely small for effectively ruunign after effects. i was thinking of getting an external hard drive and run the after effects through that instead. What size of should i go for and how do you go about running after effects on an external drive? is there any other way to optimize the perfromance of after effects?

  • CS5 on mac 10.6.4 slows system to a crawl, render times really long

We recently upgraded our towers to 10.6.4 and all productivity has slowed to a snails pace using After Effects. On 10.5 the speed was almost TOO fast on our renders...it was awesome. Now I'm looking to get that speed back.
I have a few very simple comps. 1920 x 1080, 23.98fps, 5 layers (4 QT renders from final cut XDCAM and Animation codec, 1 adjustment layer with levels and hue/saturation for color correction). Approx 40 seconds long each.
I've followed the Adobe advice of turning the multiprocessing on and using the following settings from here http://forums.adobe.com/thread/543440
leave 4gb for other apps, set minimum 3gb per processor = 33min render
setting it back to what WAS screaming fast on 10.5:
leave 3gb for other apps, set minimum 0.75gb per processor = 19min render
turning multiprocessing off = 5min render
same project on 10.5 system with multiprocessing turned ON with the above mentioned settings = 2min render
what is going on here? is there a compatibility problem with CS5/10.6 and Animation codec files? that seems to be the bulk of the slowdown, but still over twice as slow?
additionally, when AE is rendering the rest of the system becomes unusable...every action, even dragging a finder window around, results in beachballs and a 30 - 40 second lag in response. this happens with or without multiprocessing.
I just want to get back to work...any ideas on how i can configure this beast to get back to my former speeds?
    8 core mac Pro
    OS 10.6.4
    12gb RAM
many thanks in advance. i'm willing to send beer for a winning fix.

Good to know, thanks for the update. 10.6.x does manage memory differently, but our testing for performance has shown a slight improvement in the newer OS. So I am guessing that the OS update is not the issue. I just ran another test on a Mac with your configuration and saw a 4% improvement on 10.6.4 over 10.5.8.
It's uncertain what state the system memory was in when you started your tests. That's why I asked for a restart of the computer. The times reported seemed like there was a possibility that the OS was swapping. XDCAM footage places a high demand on system resources.  But it's hard to say without being there.
What I was seeing with the initial post was that the two extremes of allocation per background cpu were tried, but not the middle ground. To better see this, launch the Activity Monitor utility or look at the last line of the MP preference. With the 4GB reserved and the 3GB/ bkgnd cpu setting you weren't getting any extra processes spawned for multiprocessing. You can see this in the preferences multiprocessing section as "Actual CPUs that will be used = 0". Then, by setting the pref to .75GB/bkgnd the app launched 8 bkgnd processes, but for the task at hand, I am guessing that they were starved for memory and sometimes failed to render. This was faster than the first test, but still slow. By setting the pref to 1.5GB/bkgnd cpu you were now getting 4 new processes spawned for multiprocessing. The background processes had enough memory to succeed so that made it render faster still.
Now, try setting it to 1GB/bkgnd cpu. That will launch 6 processes which should render faster as long as that is enough memory for the task. If  the Memory pref for Reserve RAM for other apps is set back to 3GB, it will allow the spawning of 7 bkgnd processes. If that is a successful balance for this project then it will be the fastest render time. But, our testing shows it will be at the risk of starving the OS for memory, thus the more conservative 4GB recommendation for a 12GB system.
It's a fine line and why we are recommending that one give up a little speed by reserving more memory for other apps. True, there will be less processes spawned for multiprocessing, but there will also be less chance for the OS to start swapping to disk which greatly slows down performance for all tasks. If that compromise is not acceptible, then the alternative is to buy more ram so that all 8 processes can adequately receive enough memory for the job, and yet still maintain adequate reserves for the OS and other apps.

  • RENDER TAKING EXTREMELY LONG

I HAVE AN EDIT I DID ITS ABOUT 2 MINUTES LONG, 720P, 59.994 FPS, AND 8000 KBPS DATA RATE ON EACH CLIP.  IV ADDED VARIOUS EFFECTS LIKE TWIXTOR, MBL, CC LENS, RADIAL BLUR, ETC.  MY PAST EDITS LIKE THIS THAT WERE SHORTER DIDNT TAKE 24HRS OR 17 LIKE THIS SAID DURING ONE OF MY ATTEMPTED RENDERS. IM RENDERING IT OUT AS H.264 720P 59.94 AND I ALSO TRIED THE QUICKTIME FORMAT WITH H.264 CODEC. THEY ARE COMING OUT TO BE OVER A DAY LONG EVERY TIME I TRY. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY ITS DOING THIS? AND IM RENDERING AS IM TYPING THIS SRRY FOR THE CAPS.

Which version of AE? What operating system? What computer? Do you use MP rendering? What are your Twixtor settings? Yes, the render times seem excessive, but on the otehr hand they could be perfectly within reason. If you enabled MP rendering, but also use Twixtor, it would automatically revert to single process rendering, but the BG instances stil lremain active and consume lots of RAM. Likewise, extreme settings in Twixtor may cause very long analyses of many frames...

  • Why wont after effects render my whole movie ?

I got a simple comp in after effects. Its just some text and a picture noe videos.  But i do got some effects, on the text and the picture im using :
Twitch in the twitch effect manuel , i am using "Bad disortion"
And im using the wiggler, in the mid of the clip.
On the text i am also using twitch. I suppose is the same , which effect it is on the text. Cause it just a effect for a really short time.
So the whole project movie its about 48 sec long. But when i render it to mov , it just renders 3 second. So i can only watch 3 seconds of my mov.
    Computer specs :
    Macbook pro Retina 15.
    Processor : 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory : 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3
    Graphics : Nvidia GeForce GT650M 1024mb
    Software : OS X 10.8.3

most likely problem is that you have not properly setup your Render Settings. That's where you set the length of the render. The default is to render the length of the work area. Your comp's work area is probably not set to cover the entire composition.
You cannot just open AE and start using it. You must learn how the program works. Please go through the getting started materials you'll find here.

  • Adobe After Effects CC Time Warp Issues

Anyone on here proficient in After Effects CC? I'm attempting to mess around with time warping to see if I can mimic the slow motion effects of a high frame rate camera, but the issue I'm running into is that when I slow down the footage at a certain point in the clip, it will slow down, but when it's back to real time speed the frames don't match up. And I haven't found a way to stretch out the length of the clip so the frames do match up. Any advice?

You need to read up on time remapping. For example: you have a 30 second clip shot at 30 fps and you want to play a clip at normal speed for the first 10 seconds, then, and heres the hard part to wrap your head around, slow down the next 10 seconds to 1/4 speed to simulate shooting the clip at 120 fps, then play the last 10 seconds at normal speed. The hard part to wrap your head around when you do this is that the middle 10 seconds will now take 40 seconds to playback.
    Here's what you do:
    Enable time remapping
Note that there are 2 keyframes, one at the first frame and one that is 1 frame past the end of the video (I won't explain why it is there but trust me it makes sense)
Move your CTI to the 10 second mark and set a new keyframe by clicking the diamond in the Keys column in the timeline
Move the CTI to the 20 second mark and set a new keyframe
Extend the length of the composition to one minute and ten seconds (this is some of the hard part to wrap your head around)
Move the CTI to the end of the extended composition and set a new out point for your video by pressing Alt/Option + ]
Now move the CTI to the one minute mark (one minute because the middle 10 seconds is now 40 seconds long so the end of the slow mo section will move from 20 seconds to 1 minute
Select the last two keyframes and drag them to the left until the keyframe originally set at 20 seconds snaps to the one minute mark and the last keyframe is one frame past the out point of the clip
That's all there is to it. Your new modified video plays at normal speed for the first 10 seconds, 1/4 speed for the next 40 seconds, then resumes normal speed. You can check out the speed graph to verify the speed change and even modify the curves so the change in speed is smoothed out, but if you do that you should have decided before you moved the last two keyframes and set two additional keyframes at san 10:10 and 19:20 to give you a few frames to ramp up and ramp down your slow mo.
The thought process is the same no matter what technique you use to change the speed in the middle of a clip. If you want to return to normal speed after the speed change you need to define the outpoint of the speed change and move the outpoint and the end point of the speed change down the timeline for slowing down a clip or up the timeline for speeding one up to return the clip to normal speed.
Now all you are stuck with is how to make the slow motion segment look smooth because you are repeating four frames at a time. Twitter is probably the best tool for this but it is expensive. AE's frame blending does a fairly good job on most video. Some video will not successfully slow down more than 1/4 speed no matter what software you use. Some video will slow down to 1/10 speed just fine using nothing more than Time Remapping. It all depends on the shot.

I have searched for numerous tutorials and none of them work. My project is ten minutes long and whenever I render it it will stop at a certain point then crash. Once crashed I have to restart my laptop to get After Effects to open again. Nothing seems to be working, any cahnce anyne can help me?

  • QuickTime/After Effects render problem

This is a strange one. When batch rendering from After Effects CS3 to .mov format, some random files will have an upper case file extension, and the rest lower case. Our automated QA process will only deal with lower case extensions, so this is a problem. I don't believe the issue lies with the destination share, since AE projects render there fine using different codecs (Etymonix, for example). Here's our config info. We are still using QT 7.5.5 because of other AE issues with the latest version.
    Clients/render nodes:
    Windows XP Pro SP3
    After Effects CS3 w/8.0.2 patch
    QuickTime 7.5.5
    Batch render app:
    Deadline 3.1 SP2
    File share:
    Isilon OneFS 5.0.0
    CIFS protocol
    thanks

    edwoodjrjr wrote:
I don't believe the issue lies with the destination share,
Actually I do. What seems to happen is that when the file name is short enough, it will end up being one case, when it's longer, in the other. The reason behind this certainly being how some file systems discriminate between long file names and short ones, and not adding a long name, if the file can be described with teh short name (or simply using the same name). Depending on which part your other system reads, this may show up as different case names. Likewise, you could simply be seeing code page/ Unicode conversion issues during network transfers. If only one workstation has a different setting than the others, it might royally interfere with the file naming on the storage, beause then the files will use the name defined by the workstation who requested/ created it (first come, first served). Anyway, this is far too high-endish and specialized stuff you are working with, so I don't think your will get conclusive answers here. I even couldn't find out what CIFS actually does use under the hood, as I strongly believe it's just a wrapper system for another native file system (anything from FAT16 to Linux EXT), so maybe ask the Deadline people and Isilon...

  • After Effects composition will no longer populate in Media Encoder.

    Hi guys.
I'm pulling my hair out with this recurring issue with Encoder.
Ive been working on a 24 minute or so video and i have made a habit of stopping every couple of minutes to check if Media Encoder will pick up the composition. 2 hours in and its still appearing, but 30 minutes later it no longer appears. No matter how far i back track, I cant make it appear again. This is the 3rd time its happened and with so many hours invested into this, I really don't want to do all that work again.
Do any of you know what causes this issue or better yet, a way to fix it?
Ive tried rendering through After effects manually but the video is always too big and I it never has audio and has choppy slowmo pictures.
In summary, i don't want to do 12 hours of work all over again. Please help.

We can't know anything. You have not provided any system information, no exact version info, no comp settings, no details about footage and effects used and a gigazillion other things like cache settings, AME settings and so on. I don't even know where to stop because so much info is missing....

  • After Effect Render

When I make my video on after effects it looks fine until I render it and play it. The video is then choppie or sorta skips like a scratched CD I was wondering if there was anything I could do so that I could get a smoother video.

Read the section in the help files on rendering. The default settings are Uncompressed wich is good for production but bad for playback. You need a delivery codec for smooth playback and small file sizes. For that you should use the Adobe Media Encoder. You should also read the FAQ on the first page of this forum. This question has been asked and answered about a thousand times.
