After Effects users out there using Avid QT codecs...

Hi.
I am just wondering, especially to all those Motion Graphic Designers and alike who are using
b After Effects
and
b rendering with clips from Avids with a Avid QuickTime codec or Meridien Compressed codec...
Do you have a problem or an error message popping out just before you hit the 'render' button in the Render Queue? If the audio is checked??
It is not totally disaterous but just an annoying error message, I have to turn off rendering with audio to avoid the error message.
Thanks and cheers

  • After Effects CC 2014 only using 30% of CPU when rendering

I've scoured the internet for details but there's surprisingly little help when it comes to After Effects and performance.
Basically, I built a new workstation awhile ago with the hopes of really speeding up my video editing as I was starting to do a lot more. Here are the specs:
    Core i7-4930k
    32 GB RAM @ 1600MHz
    Stock GeForce 780
Samsung 840 EVO 500GB OS drive
Crucial 240 GB SSD for Scratch Disk
3TB WD Red for Mass Storage
    Windows 8.1
I must say that I've been quite disappointed so far with the setup when it comes to the CPU, especially After Effects. I would think the 6 core would greatly outperform my old 4 core, but I've found hardly any performance improvements, and in fact have seen it perform worse in a number of situations. And I think the issue is that somehow, After Effects is not fully using the CPU. Whenever rendering or previewing, all 6 physical cores as well as the 6 logical cores hover around 30% usage. Never any more. And yet, the comp it's rendering could be chugging away at maybe 2-3 frames per second, and it could clearly go faster with more CPU usage. Heat isn't throttling anything as all the cores are still at a very cool 48-50 C, and this is just pretty basic air cooling. It's definitely not being pushed that much.
I don't think it's the CPU itself as Maya gladly takes up as much CPU as possible and my render times on that have improved dramatically. After Effects however (and Premiere when not using GPU effects) can be quite slow. It's especially frustrating when other older, clearly slower computers end up rendering my comps faster.
Is there any info at all out there as to why this is? Any advice on troubleshooting? I've tried many things and can't think of anything short of maybe it being an OS issue and having to reformat (which would be quite a pain).
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Martin, I don't know if there's anything Todd or I can say to change your opinions. We try to represent how After Effects works, and why the After Effects team chose to make it work that way, in a way that all users can understand so you can get back to creative work as fast as possible.
What tends to rub us the wrong way are your assertions and accusations about that. For example:
If you guys spent less time listening to the voices you want to hear, and more time on the 'yes some time difficult to hear' but nether the less valid concerns of experienced users, you would have addressed this fundermental flaw years ago.
We gave constructive feedback whilst part of that program and none of it was ever addressed. There seemed to be a weird attitude to any criticism which didn't fit the given narrative.
I'm sure you probably see it differently and it is great to hear it is being addressed.
That last statement is quite true, your perspective is your own. From our perspective, your statements do not reflect how the After Effects team interacts with After Effects users, either the users in our prerelease program or users who are not a part of that program. Fact is that we spend a lot of time talking with users: in forums, at user groups, on the phone, via email, and by visiting work sites. We take notes and discuss as a group what we learned, and use that feedback to guide the future development of After Effects. It's not all sunshine and roses, we hear plenty of negative things about After Effects. This is important as it helps us understand how to make After Effects better. At the same time, we're also cognizant that we have many different types of users with different needs and workflows, and we can't make all users happy all of the time.
What I think is not visible to you, or to most After Effects users, is how we prioritize the development of After Effects. There are many factors that go into that, starting with input from users but also including (in no particular order) fixing bugs and general improvements, industry trends, changes in hardware and software environments, maintaining a large and complex codebase (some of which is shared with other Adobe applications), maintaining interoperability with other applications (both Adobe and non-Adobe), and ultimately delivering a product that people want to use. To see how all that comes together is harder to communicate; really, you would need to sit down with us and watch us work.
The more relevant point here, Martin, is that you appear to disagree with how much priority we've given to performance improvements in After Effects. You indicate that you would prefer that we had started on this work a long time ago.
All work we do in After Effects comes at the cost of work we don't do. I'm confident that you're like me in that you have a long list of enhancements, beyond performance, that you'd like to see in After Effects. But the After Effects team is relatively small for such a complex application, and the scope of the performance-related improvements we are currently making is huge, a massive re-wiring of the application. Doing this work in a reasonable amount of time, with the number of people that we have, with as few moving parts as possible, is tricky. In that context I hope you can see that it has not been easy for us to justify putting the entire team on this effort and doing no other work, no creative features, no workflow improvements, no fixing of long-standing bugs and gotchas, etc. What is important is that this work is now in progress.
On that note, I need to temper any expectations that you may be building based on this conversation. We're laying the groundwork for the future of After Effects, and the first iteration of performance improvements that you see next year might not meet your expectations if we hype it up too much. We plan to share specific detail when we get closer to a public release, but suffice that what we are doing now is absolutely necessary for even better things to come later.
We understand your frustrations, that you'd like After Effects to be faster. We're working on it, and we appreciate your patience. We also appreciate constructive comments and questions.

  • A very important question for every After Effects user

a very important question for every After Effects user, from product manager Steve Forde:
    http://adobe.ly/1exI6tI

Tom Daigon Great idea everybody! Encourage Adobe to do ONLY ONE THING with AE for 2014. Since theres not a heck of a lot of development that can be done on the present foundation, they can really stretch the rental scheme out for many years. And once you get used to the concept, every year they will do ONE THING to placate you. So now they have you swallowing no "ownership" of software and limited development.

  • After effects instantly crashes while using opengl with nvidias new drivers 178.24

Since I installed nvidias new drivers 178.24, after effects instantly crashes while using opengl. Anyone else experienced this?
    I have Geforce 8600 GT.
As a minor note, I had major problems with the new quicktime 7.5.5 update, both After effects and Premiere got problems with interpreting footage and frames here and there got the "missing frame" look. I also got more problems so I uninstalled it instantly. Is there a major problem with the update or a major problem with me?
    Thanks

I use Vista (in retroperspective this was probably a mistake, but the company wanted to test the capabilities with Vista when we bought the computer a year ago). And specs are:

Sorry not to give more info on the Quicktime problem, I don't remember exactly what more problems there where as we have had extremely much to do these last couple of weeks and I just freaked out and uninstalled it as soon as the problems emerged. I do remember the frame issue however, it was very clear, i imported an image sequence in premiere and everything worked fine, then i updated and frames were suddenly dropped, then i uninstalled and installed 7.5 again and it worked just fine. I also tried to flush the cache, restart and generally search for the source of the problem for a couple of hours.

I am the music teacher in a  Special school in London UK currently working with Drake Music who are a charity that go into schools to enable music making through music technology. Our purpose is to enable a group of 7 children who have profound and multiple learning difficulties to play instruments on the ipads or through the soundbeam and to be able to play and jam together with me underscoring on the guitar. We're having a lot of fun and we're all learning a lot about what can be achieved using the amazing ipad technology. If you're doing a similar project I'd love to hear from you and we can swap notes!

  • Any former Avid users out there....

I am helping a another company gather footage from our library. However, they use Avid (PC version) and we run all Final Cut. Two days ago I gave them a hard drive with all the digitized footage as Quicktime movies using either an HDV codec (HDV 720p30 shot from a JVC GY-HD100) or DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec.
The producer and editor have both told me that they cannot open some of the files and are having problems bringing other files into Avid. So what is the native file format/codec for Avid? Should I give them avi files?
While I have not worked with Avid directly I assumed it was similar to FCP (or maybe FCP is similar to Avid depending on which side of the fence you're on). I figured you could ingest just about anything and while you may have to render it, it should fit on the same timeline.
As a small insight, I talked to the producer yesterday who said that some of the footage was in an odd size. He said it was bigger than the usual 720 by something (these are the producers words paraphrased). I told him it was high definition. He said well let me pass you over to the editor whose cutting the project. The editor gets on the phone and asks, "As part of your normal workflow do you guys normally mix SD and HD in the same project?" Apparently he'd never heard of doing such a thing.
I wasn't sure if this guy had just crawled out from under a rock and realized that much of the Western world was now getting more involved with HD...maybe he just watched the Super Bowl in High Definition. I don't know, but I told him that we do it all the time - upres SD to HD or downconverting HD to SD is a pretty common part of our workflow.
So I am trying to figure out how can I give the footage to them so they can easily ingest it (avi, OMF, Quicktime with a certain codec, etc). I am not getting paid to do their laundry so I am trying to make it as simple as possible to get this footage to them. Any ideas?

You might have an incompatibly formatted drive. Some of your files are accessible in that file structure, others are not. Seen it happen. No clue.
Or, of course, you could send them a tape or two, then let them recapture.
    <
This is the best possible solution unless you are prepared to work on the least common denominator which is likely to be an extreme choice: the lossless and hugely prolific Animation codec. (There must be other inter-platform codecs, I've never used Avid, so I dunno)
You can get additional help by posting a similar question on an Avid forum. Try creativecow.net and try not to take the elitists personally over there. They think anything that isn't purple is a threat unto their livelihoods and are likely to be rather, umm, snippy. Not like us at all.
Suggest you couch it like this: "I had to give up my favorite and ultracool Avid to go to work at a shop that is all, get this, Final Cut. I used to be able to exchange my QT files with my old Avid Macintosh chums easily but some of my old Avid chums have been forced to switch from their Macs to PC versions (can you IMAGINE?) and they need media from me. I use these formats on FCP (list here). What's the no-brainer pathway for us to exchange media freely and openly since we're all brothers and sisters working together on the same creative team and want to be able to work together without any finger-pointing since none of our editing platform decisions were our own."

  • Can After Effects help out Premiere

    Dear,
I'm using Premiere CS3. I'm editing on AspectHD, and I'd like to have my co-editor working on his machine with DV version of the footage.
To have him have exactly what I've got so far, I went this way:
    - saved a copy of my project file
    - offlined all video clips it copy and kept audio files online (to avoid
having to reconnect them, by having my co-editor have them in the same
drive path and directory as I do so they reconnect automatically)
    - I imported CFHD project in a brand new DV project (so that my co-editor
can work in it and have proper specs)
So now I have an offline DV version of my project file with audio online, but when I try to reconnect medias with the DV clips, I need to reconnect them one by one; even more, I need to select them 2 times each before Premiere recognizes and accepts them as the proper media. (that is normal software workflow according to ADOBE support "except for the double selection I have to make")
When I just Make Offline and Reconnect Medias in my project file and keep the HD media, I just need to select and tie one file in each folder that hold clips and Premiere does the rest, but now it won't do it for this particular project.
I talked with ADOBE tech support and the guy told me it was how Premiere works, but couldn't help me out as to if AE could help me help PREMIERE reconnect all my file in batch instead of spending 1-2 days doing so.
Anyone knows if by importing my project file in AE I could batch reconnect medias ?
    Thank you.

Thank you Howard, didn't know about this.
But, still my co-editor doesn't have the Hard Drive space to have the files copied (1.4GB) and I don't have the money to buy it for him.
So I'd rather find a way to reconnect DV media to replace CFHD ones.
I posted on After Effects forum and it seems the program will respond as Premiere does. What about BRIDGE, is is there a way to reconnect media via it ?
This is like the basis of offline/online editing I can't believe that ADOBE technician haven't included something in the Creative Suite to do this !!?

  • After Effects subscription for offline use, edu pricing?

    hello,
I'm an animation teacher at a high school. I would like to use a cloud subscription version of After Effects to complete a project during a summer art residency. There won't be much internet access at the residency (otherwise nobody would get anything done!) so I need a full, locally installed version of the app.
Is this possible with edu pricing? It looks like the edu subscriptions are annual only, or am I missing something?
    thanks - Luke

In addition to what Jatin said, look out for the scheme for Students and Teachers at https://creative.adobe.com/plans?plan=edu&store_code=us&locale=en
From what I see, monthly subscriptions are available for student and teacher subscriptions.

  • Can't find After Effects user guide.

I just installed Production Premium CS5.5 a couple of days. One of the optional downloads is the Functional Content for After Effects. The description says that it contains templates, footage and a user guide not included with the trial version. I've installed the functional content but I can't find this user guide.
    Help.
    Thanks.

It's online: go Help>After Effects Help.  It's actually more of a reference work than a how-to for the novice.
AE takes so flippin' many twists & turns that it's darned near impossible to put everything in a logical sequential order.  If you're new, you owe it to yourself to pay a nice, long visit to this page.  Start at the top with the overview of how AE works.
And there are a boatload of helpful links throughout.

  • After Effects Won't Render Using H.264

OK, I am trying to use H.264 codec but I keep getting an error and I can't figure out why.  I select (Composition > Add to Render Que), then I select "Output Module > Custom and select "Lossless" and select H.264 and then get the message below:
"After Effects: For reliable output with H.264 compression, please choose it directly from the Output Module Format menu instead of via QuickTime. (44 :: 81)"
So I then did as it said and selected the drop down arrow beside Output Module and then selected "Custom" and then selected H.264. and then I get the same message:
"After Effects: For reliable output with H.264 compression, please choose it directly from the Output Module Format menu instead of via QuickTime. (44 :: 81)"
An idea what's going on? Why does it give me this message when I am doing it the way it is telling me? How can I render using H.264?
    Thanks

Are you using the trial version of After Effects?
    from "Supported output formats":
"The free trial version of Adobe After Effects software does not include some features that depend upon software licensed from parties other than Adobe. For example, mocha for After Effects, some effect plug-ins, and some codecs for encoding MPEG formats are available only with the full version of Adobe After Effects software."
H.264 is an MPEG format (MPEG-4, part 10).

  • The files for after effects are not ther but still creative cloud thinks its installed

My Macs Creative Cloud thinks that I have After Effects CC installed but when i search my mac no files are there :/ help me get a sollution as to how to fix this.

    Hello,
as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.
Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: ... helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html  and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
Sometimes the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
If necessary and for further questions and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences.

  • Are there any Blender 3D users out there.... Node editor glitch

I work on a MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa 2.2) with OS X 10.4.11 and have noticed that the "previews" in the node editor have weird lines and visual glitches. See http://entplex.org/node_preview.png and http://entplex.org/node_preview2.png. Note the static in the viewer and comp nodes. This occurs with both 2.44 and 2.45. This occurs with ANY node setup I try and even after reseting user defaults in blender. I have even gone as far as trying to run blender from a clean install of os x on an external hard drive. Has anyone else noticed this or is there something wrong with my system? Can anyone confirm or deny this?

*looks like a graphics card issue.*
    *try looking here: http://www.blendernation.com/2008/02/22/blender-problems-on-leopard-solved/*
*Also, that stretching comes from your (output) format ... usually.*
*I'd try moving your output to ntsc (720x486) and deselecting fields (if those are selected)*

  • After Effects crashes everytime I use Timecode

I have Version 10.0.1.19 running on windows 7 64bit with 8Gbs of RAM.  Everytime I try to add a timecode effect to a wmv and export the file After Effects crashes half way through export.

The first thing you should do is update to 10.0.2 or higher... AE may be up to 10.0.3.  Anyway, it's easy and it's free; go Help>Update.  Make sure you turn off any antivirus or firewall software before you do it.
Second, I'm not a big fan of using Windows Media in AE.  If the update doesn't help, you might consider converting that file to an lossless or uncompressed AVI.  I think converting it to a Quicktime movie in the PNG codec would be even better.
Third -- and you might be surprised by this -- but 8 gigs isn't exactly a boatload of RAM in AE for multiprocessing.  What happens when you turn off multiprocessing?
