After Effects vs Edge Animate vs Flash vs Photoshop

Hi - I am looking to create short (cartoon) animated training videos with voice and/or music to be posted on companies' intranets in MP4. What is the best software for this purpose?
I have been looking for a comparison chart (in laymans terms) describing the similarities and differences between the porgrams, the output files they can produce and the pros and cons of using each.
Thanks!
Tracy

These apps are completely different animals. If you are going to produce training videos that are more than a few seconds long then you need and editing program like Premiere Pro to edit the shots and do the sound and music mixing.  After Effects or something like Cartoon Smart can be used to create the cartoons. Premiere Pro will take you about a week to get a handle on, After Effects will take quite a bit longer. If you have not done any cartoon animation before then you either have to know how to draw and understand the principals of cell animation or use something like Cartoon Smart to create your characters. Edge Animate and Flash are for creating interactive animations not for making movies. You can embed movies in either and both have long and steep learning curves to do something like you are describing.
Photoshop if for editing photographs and if you are a skilled artist you can use it for creating original artwork from scratch. Illustrator is probably better suited to create cartoons. There is no program that you can just buy and a week later produce a commercial product. The hardest part of training videos is not the animation, it's the writing. Most online training is really awful because of poor writing so that's where you should start. Either learn to write training or hire or collaborate with a good writer, figure out a style that you want to emulate, make it your own, learn the appropriate software, make a good demo, then go out and pitch your work. The last training videos that I worked on that were mostly animation had a production team of 15 people and we worked for a month to produce 5 hours of quality training. About 750 man hours were spent on the project. Cartoons are not fast and easy. There are no magic buttons you can press to make things work out in minutes.
If you give us an example that shows exactly the kind of thing you want to do then we can give you an idea of production techniques to achieve your goal, production time per finished minute, and the amount of time you can expect to spend learning how to use the software to create the product.

  • I have problems in after effects to import caps 3d generated in Photoshop,

Good days, at present I have a complete package of cs6.
With this package of cs6 I have problems in after effects to import caps 3d generated in Photoshop, the message is " not available: Live photoshop 3d ".
    Who is the best sulución?

After Effects does not import live Photoshop 3D objects.
As Mylenium says, you need to use Cinema 4D (included with After Effects CC), Invigorator, Element 3D, or some other plug-in or application to bring 3D items into After Effects.

  • Retaining transparency in After Effects, to be imported into flash

    Hi
I have created a sequence in after effects using Illustrator images and the partical system. I want to export/render this out with a transparent background and in a format recognised by Flash. Then I want to bring it into Flash and play it over realtime footage from a webcam.
    Anyway I have tried to:
    render it out using FLV
render it out using Quicktime with RGB + Alpha and millions of colours+
Render it out using Targa etc
    I have tried to:
    Export it with SWF
    Export it with XFL
Ant others I just cant remember.
Is it possible to bring a transparent backgrounded file from After Effects into Flash?
If so, how can it be done?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Mairead

Animation is the one I use most often. I should be using ProRes 4444 for ease of integration into Apple's Motion and Final Cut apps but I keep forgetting it's available.
...and here's another candidate: PNG the codec, not the image sequence.  It also supports Alpha Channels, and unless you're making animated lower-thirds, the file sizes are generally smaller than Animation files.
Animation uses run length encoding, so in situations with large expanses of transparency as in lower-thirds, the file sizes can be downright compact.

Are you selecting a classic tween or perhaps have more than one thing selected?  You need to select a single new motion tween for the Motion Editor to become active.

Same as above. Make sure you have one new (blue, no arrow) tween span or tween instance selected at the time.

Make sure that you have a movie clip or graphic instance selected. The Property inspector is context sensitive, so if you have a frame selected or an instance type that does not support color effects you will not see that section in the inspector.

Yes, you can create this kind of effect in Flash. You can play with the blur and distance properties, and apply eases to these properties. You'll want to play with copying and pasting curves from and to properties within the motion editor.  Same with having things come into focus (you can keyframe the blur amt or use an ease). Will see if I can come up with an example and put it on the ol blog...

  • Recreating super slick iPhone 6 video scroll effect in Edge Animate

On the iPhone 6 marketing page page, there are several HTML5 video elements (MP4) that react to scrolling in realtime. This is a super slick effect and I'm curious how it's working. Wondering if there's a way to do this in Edge Animate since frames are in absolute time and Edge Animate uses time as only a guide (no exact frames). Also working in Adobe Muse, so if there's a way to use that, great!
This would be a great alternative to using 100+ JPEGs as the file size with an MP4 for tons of the same data is MUCH lower.
    Here's the page: http://www.apple.com/iphone-6/
    Screenshot for reference:  http://i.imgur.com/pCHkstw.png
You'll have to scroll down to the shot right above "iPhone at its largest. And thinnest." heading.
NOTE: This seems to work for MP4 only (not OGG-only browsers like FF for OSX). Tested in Chrome and Safari.

  • Can we import Flash into Edge Animate

    Hi
I would like to know if we can import Flash animation into Edge Animate and into Muse

    Hi Dan,
There is no such workflow as far as I know. However, Animate does support native HTML5 videos.

  • Flash or After Effect?

I am new to the CS3 collection. I'm confused on what's the difference between flash and After Effect?, and why do I need both? I want to create animation and image reels for my clients website, but don't know which software to use. Any help u give would be really helpful.
    Thanks

Yeah, this reminds me a little of visual effects in your better movies; to make them convincing, they usually mix several techniques and tools. Lord of the Rings used CG, puppets, matte paintings, costumes, forced perspective, etc.
Likewise, Adobe.com integrates After Effects-made movies into a Flash/HTML environment with Photoshop backgrounds, Illustrator vectors, etc.
For really lush movies with deep environments, photo-realistic environments, and special effects (as well as million other options), After Effects is what you want.
For interactive environments on the web with clean lines, and vector art, Flash is what you want.
However, to integrate your After Effects movies into an interactive, lush environment, you probably need both, as well as other software such as Photoshop, Soundtrack, or a 3D application to get what you want.
It's probably better for you to decide what you want to do (specifically) and then figure out what tools you need to do the job. You wouldn't go buy a power-saw and cordless drill to tune-up a bicycle. You would look at the job at hand and go buy tools like allen wrenches, spoke wrenches and air pumps.
You should download the demos of the software and see what you like. You may find you might be biting off more than you can chew (or not) and that you don't want anything to do with ActionScript coding or keyframe based animation. Who knows?
    Good luck!

  • After Effects SWF export

i seem to be having some trouble exporting to SWF from AE and succesfully playing it back. When i go to preview it in the htm file it creates or if im adding it into dreamweaver the swf file doesnt animate at all, its just a static image. If i render it as a FLV file it works fine
    Any ideas?

    [branched to a new thread]
There's seldom any reason or benefit to exporting a SWF file directly from After Effects. Relatively few things are preserved as vectors (which is the main reason to export a SWF file). See this page for details.
There are several options for creating movies from After Effects that will play in Flash Player. See this section for more information.

  • Can you edit layers separately on a sphere in After Effects?

I'm working on a history documentary about World War II and I have a map of the world divided into colonial empires. Each empire is a separate layer.
If you apply the map to a sphere in Photoshop and then bring it into After Effects, can you animate the empire layers fading in their opacity at different times?
Is this possible? I have no idea how to do this but I imagine that it must be relatively simple to do.
Thank you very much in advance for any helpful suggestions.
    - Nick

Did you choose File --> Import, picked the PSD and then actually set the dimensions to Comp - Document size? this should definitely work. Note that by default it will import as Footage, which is not what you want. If that's not the problem, you may have accidentalyl flattened/ merged the Photoshop document or done something else that forces AE into flattening the doc. For instance the document being in CMYK instead of RGB color mode would do that... I recommend you double-check in PS.

  • Update only a part of a project with Edge Animate CC 2014.1.1 PROBLEM

    WIN 8.1
    Edge Animate CC 2014.1.1
    Firefox 35.0
The Problem started after Update to Edge Animate CC 2014.1.1
I want to update text which is an Edge Animate file
The original Project was programmed with Edge Animate 1.0(not CC)
After I made the changes and saved the file I get a “updatedtext_upgraded” folder that contains the new files.
I am not sure what to do with that folder:
    A) Do I have to exchange the data from the Folder ”updatedtext_upgraded”?
    or
    B) Do I have to put the whole project into the folder “updatedtext1_upgraded”?
    or
    C) Do I have to develop the whole Project new with AN CC 2014.1.1?
    Thank you

I am currently having issues opening older compositions in 2014.1.1
I have never used an earlier version but have a large project and I am using EA for the first time.
Before I started it I gathered many tutorials and downloaded examples of the features I would need in my new project only to find that they all were created in earlier versions of EA and when I publish from my version they are not working properly in a wide variety of ways.
It seems there are few tutorials built for the very latest version - things like custom scrollbars for text and loading and unloading composiitons - see huge lists online of things Adobe have apparently 'fixed' with this version but it feels like other things are broken.
I am now desperately searching for information on what exactly is deprecated and what I need to do to get files working correctly.
    Very worried indeed.

  • The last 'An' update has bug; An error occurred. Please save your work and restart Edge Animate

After the last Edge Animate I started to get this error:  An error occurred. Please save your work and restart Edge Animate.  Anyone else having this issue with version 1.5.0.217.23270
    I'm using Windows 7 Profession 64 bit.
    24 gb ram
At the time of the error on timeline, around 21 second frame, only 4.82 gb of ram was being used and CPU was using less that 10% processing. No spikes.

    Elaine,
On the webserver its running fine for being partially completed.  http://dirtyhumanoids.com/publish/web/TonalpohualliAndTheEyeOfProvidence.html
It's crashing within Animate on all 3 copies.
Copy 1 was created and saved before last upgrade (no .
Copy 2 of this file was created before the update and saved a few times before and after the upgrade.
Copy 3, is just trying to figure out what went wrong with copy 2.  BTW, Copy 1 is also having the same issue.
The only thing I can think of that I might have messed up on was creating a picture into a symbol much late in the project.
I wish I knew how to video record my desktop so you could analysis my Edge Animate.

  • Vector Images in After Effects

I'm trying to figure out the workflow on some motion info graphics for a documentary film.
In Flash I created a 2D animation using a layered Illustrator file. It looks very crisp and sharp when I exported it to quicktime to put into Premiere.
Then I created the same thing in After Effects to see what the process was like comparatively for this type of graphic.
The thing that strikes me is the After Effects video doesn't look as crisp as the Flash animation even though they are both HD 1080p. The lines are more pixelated in the After Effects. I just looks blurrier.
Is that because After Effects rasterizes those graphics and Flash does not?
The main reason I am considering using After Effects is it is obviously a more robust program and I might need some its features. It also might be easier for the editor, who is more versed in AE to adjust the animations and because it roundtrips easier from Premiere, but I don't want to use it if the animations are not going to look at crisp.
I'd appreciate hearing suggestions or thoughts on this.

Thank you Rick. I turned on CR for all the layers. I'm going to post a screen grab of what I'm talking about. I exported both videos in the same compression and both were made for HD 1080p in their settings. I exported the AE in animation codec to get the best quality. Here are the screen grabs from the exported videos in Quicktime. I would love to be able to have as crisp a picture in AE because I think I may be able to do more with it in the long run and it's more of a film industry standard.
If anyone can direct me as to what I'm doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated, but I think you can see the difference I'm talking about and why the Flash image is more desirable.

  • An example of a high graphic internet site all built in Edge Animate

    Hi,
I'm a french designer, freelance, and I just fell in love for Edge Animate. This software has a great potential and I just wished to share with you one of my last work. Just have a look at it and send me your comments and advises. If you guys have interest in my developments, I'll post later the 2 others internet site I'm working on, trying to reproduce a parallax effect in Edge Animate.
Thanks in advance for your attention.

Thank you for your feedback Michael To answer your question, about the homepage, only the right arrow (to select where you want to go on the site) and the big drawing on the white square are (to reach the selected part of the site you chosed) are clickable. The list of items aren't.
To share my experience with other experts on this forum, I have to tell the complete site has been designed and scripted in Edge Animate, and all the pictures have been made with... an iPhone and a Lumia 900. From the small ilustration picture to the large full screen size picture, all come from a cellphone camera. As you already guessed, I worked them all in Photoshop.
    See you later all ))
