After Efffects CS4: Imported Illustrator Art Looks Jaggy

I imported an Illustrator file into my composition. The quality is set to Best, but when I scale the image up to 500%, the edges are not razor-sharp. They are rathar jaggy. Not blocky like when the quality is set to medium. There is only Vector Art in the file, but it is in CMYK format... not sure if that makes a difference.
Any ideas where to start?

  • Illustrator files look jaggy when scaled up (when used as a particle)

Am i doing something odd? I've got an illustrator vector which i'm using as a particle which scales over life (i want the particles to fill frame for a wipe i'm creating). But when they are bigger that 100% they look really jaggy, even when render quality is set to BEST.
    Any ideas?

    Howdy,
Particle emitters and replicators render the source image at its current scale and use that bitmap as the starting point for each cell. This means that you might see scaling artifacts if a particle cell is smaller or larger than the source image.
The one exception to this is when the emitter or replicator is in "Global 3D" mode. Each cell is then rendered based on the full size of the source, so with vector sources like shapes or PDFs the results will be higher quality. Keep in mind, however, that this means re-rasterizing that source image for each cell. So with an emitter of 1000 particles, for example, it's almost like you have a project with 1000 PDF images in it.
In other words: use this power for good, not evil.

  • Imported Illustrator type looks bad in Premiere.

I'm making title cards in Adobe Illustrator CS 4 and importing them into Premiere CS 4. When I render the movie, the type looks like crap. Is there something I can do in Illustrator or Premiere to improve the quality?
Thanks in advance for the help.

I use AI quite a bit for the creation of all sorts of Shapes in PS to be used in Pr. In PS, I always use these in an image set up to match my Pr Project, i.e. NTSC 720x480 PAR 0.9. These always look very good, when I Import them as .PSD's into Pr.
Exactly what workflow have you used between AI, PS and Pr? What are your Pr Project settings, and what are your image dimensions in PS? Can you attach an example of what is looking bad with your PS image containing AI material? Hint: you'll need to do a Save_As JPEG, but do keep the compression down (higher quality # in PS), and then use the little "camera" icon in the middle of the forum editing screen, NOT the Attach Files dialog box at the bottom.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Import Illustrator & Art cam

We are a user of ARTcam Insignia.  Importing Vectors from Illustrator has always been a VERY slow process, especially with round shapes.  A simple outline circle could take over an hour to import .  We have tested different import formats  from illustrator without any improvements .  Is there a special trick we should know about when improting from Illustrator ?

I can imagine that the ARTCam User forum is the proper place to ask.
The people over there might want to ask you which version of Illustrator and ARTCam you are using.

  • Importing Illustrator and Photoshop files to Premiere Pro CS4 (without rastering)

    Hello,
I've made some economics graphs in illustrator that i'm importing into premiere.
Premiere pro cs4 doesn't import illustrator files as layers, just a single image.
I exported from illustrator to save as a .psd to maintain the layers.
I then imported the .psd into premiere which created a folder with all the .psd layers.
I dragged the .psd layers onto the timeline so I could animate them with dissolves, but noticed they became pixelated.
I rendered the layers and they still looked pixelated, even after export they were pixelated.
From what I understand, illustrator files become rasterised when you export as .psd.
Is there any way of maintaining the crisp vector graphics created in illustrator when importing into premiere?
Can I avoid rastering the files?
Thank for your help in advance
    Kind Regards
    Ant

Thanks for your reply and welcome to the forum.
I wondered why premiere was doing such a bad job of anti-aliasing...it turns out that all the .psd files were imported as square pixels instead of rectangular so I right clicked and selected interpret footage, then selected conform to DV PAL1.45.
I assumed that as I set up the original Illustrator document as a video document (720x576) it would maintain the aspect ratio.
Somewhere between exporting to .psd then to premiere the aspect ration somehow changed?
I've found a great tutorial that appears to have a better workflow than the method I was using, by first creating a template in premiere, which can be exported directly to photoshop, maintaing  the correct aspect ratio. It means i'll have to draw up the graphs in Photoshop now instead of Illustrator.

  • How importing illustrator CS4(or 5) gradients into InDesign CS5?

How importing illustrator CS4(or 5) gradients into InDesign CS5?
Many gradients for illustrator we can download in Internet, but nothing for InDesign ...
( Way, where copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) no work in this products, when gradient selected - button "Copy" - off )
I try create ASE file, but his only for Colors, without beautiful gradient...
    What i must do?

Thanks, copy to clipboard - it's working,
but why developers not create "Simple converter" in InDesign
Menu -> Load Swatches, what will get swatches in *.ai (or other) files??

  • Replacing imported vector elements in After effects CS4

    Hello
I have imported a layered illustrator vector file into my composition, dragged individual elements to the working area and applied transitions and effects. I now have the need to make some subtle edits to the original vector files and am wondering the process to auto update these items in the composition. Without having to re edit the composition again, this would be similar to a replace symbol in Flash.
    thanks
    Matt

That will replace a layer's contents without altering your effects.
You can also use a couple of other trick like editing your Illustrator art, saving it to the same name and overwriting it, and then reloading the file in AE. This populates the project's comps with the new artwork.

  • After my text goes to Final Cut one part of it looks jaggy????

    Hi,
I have a simple purple circle on a motion path- left to right. As it gets to the right it reveals text. The problem is; The black text on the circle comes out of FCP jaggy.
It looks fine in Motion, when I export the sequence from FCP to a quicktime movie, the black text over the purple circle looks jaggy. The other white text around their fades in and looks perfect.
If I change the text on the circle to white it is not jaggy. But that defeats the purpose of having the purple circle reveal the text, (when the text is black it blends in with the background)
I don't understand why the black color text is jaggy and the white color text is sharp?

Yes I changed the field dominance and the text in the circle had that slight jaggedness to it. So I didn't even compress it.
I have noticed that if I see a slight jaggedness on something in the quicktime movie, I don't even compress it because it comes out worse.
I just ended up changing the project

  • Imported Illustrator graphics messed up

After I moved my project from a PC (Vista) to Mac (OS X), my imported Illustrator vectors have been re-positioned within the layers (or pre-generated masks/boxes). The Illustrator graphics was imported from layers with Footage Dimension: Layer Size. I also have another composition with Footage Dimension: Document Size, but it looks fine.
If I Reload Footage nothing happens. If I Replace Footage the positioning gets corrected.
Any idea what might cause this to happen? This is a pretty important school project, and I'm afraid of getting it messed up again right before deadline.
i PS. The importing of Illustrator graphics was initially done on a Mac. The project was moved from OS X to Vista and everything looked fine. The problem occurred when moving from Vista back to OS X.

Well, you're not gonna like what I'm about to say, but for the most part there is simply nothing you can do about it. Illustrator import always has been and still is twitchy. The issue you are experiencing should finally be fixed in CS4, but since it hasn't hit the streets yet and your school may not upgrade in a while, this won't help you, therefore it is advisable to limit your work to one platform, if it involves vector art. Also think about, whether you actually need the vectors to remain vectors. I'm reasonably sure that some of your stuff could be done just as well with a rasterized PSD version, with the added benefit of better rendering performance and interaction.

There's a list of the big new features in the
"New features in After Effects CS4" section of After Effects CS4 Help on the Web, and you can read about every little change to the UI in the
"User interface changes from After Effects CS3 to After Effects CS4" section.
But I thought that all of you who have posted requests to this wishlist might like to get specific responses to some of the items on this list.
First of all, though, I'd like to point out an innovative set of features that I think addresses a request that many of you have made... just not exactly as you asked for it. All of us have wanted a better way to see into and navigate among nested compositions (precompositions). The Composition Mini-Flowchart and Composition Navigator make moving around in a complex project much, much faster and easier. Telling you to see the
"Opening and navigating nested compositions" section isn't going to do this feature set justice. You'll only appreciate how slick this is when you get your hands on it.
Oh, and we reversed the behavior of double-clicking versus Option-double-clicking a precomposition layer: Now double-clicking opens the source composition in the Composition panel, not the precomposition layer in the Layer panel.
Now, on to the specific responses...
    David Wigforss:

Done, as long as you have the means to search within XML files. The new XML project file format opens up a lot of scripting possibilities, too.

  • Adobe Media Encoder CS4 Importer?

I am trying to help a user get all applications installed after a hard drive crash, and am looking for a program that was listed in Add/Remove Programs. The program listed is "Adobe Media Encoder CS4 Importer." I have installed all components of Flash CS4, and it's still not showing, and a search of the Adobe site doesn't mention the importer? Any guidance would be appreciated.

This is the forum for the Flash Media Live Encoder- you may want to try posting to the Flash Professional forums.

  • Trouble Importing Illustrator/PDF/Vector File

I was working on a composition within After Effects and I was having no issues importing Illustrator files.  Suddenly it started importing them as something weird?  I'm sure I accidentally hit something to change the settings but I can't figure it out.  Here's a screen shot of my imported files on the left.  The top two on the were suppose to be like the rest of the Illustrator files below them.
Here's a link to my screen shot, notice how it's saying it's a Vector Art Sequence now and not just Vector Art.  It's only putting it on about 10 frames when I drop it in the comp and it's pulling random info from my other files.
    Any help would be appreciated.

But you must somehow have enabled sequence import... This is not coming out of nowhere, so please double check again. Also simply consider naming your files differently from jut numbering thme sequentially to break out of this cycle. If it is truly a bug in the format handling (which I doubt), that would be pretty much the only option, anyway.

  • Quicktime X and After Effects CS4 - Unwanted Color / Gamma shift

    Hello,
Upon the import of ANY video footage file into After Effects CS4, there is an immediate color (I am guessing a gamma shift) difference between how the video appears in Quicktime (both X and the older player) and how it appear in the After Effects composition window.
Footage appears to be darker in AE and lighter in quicktime, both before and after export. The gamma/color then appears roughly the same when being compressed via h.264 and uploaded to the web (the same in Safari, much darker via Firefox).
My main concern is simply getting AE's color to match Quicktime's so that I can have as close of a match between the color I think I have created in AE, and the actual color that appears in my final output to the web.
I have tried using all of the fixes to be found relating to gamma shifts via .h264, prores, etc. but nobody seems to have this problem with every codec, even animation. I have tried assigning color profiles in AE, matching quicktime legacy formats, etc. All of the options available in AE to no avail.
My monitor is calibrated fine, I am using Perian, All of the latest software updates. Any advice much appreciated!

Hi, thanks for the link. While helpful I am still having problems!
I tried using the method described with Automator to assign a color profile to a test Animation file, created from scratch in AE and rendered out as an Animation with no color management (previously it made no difference to the quicktime gamma shift as to if I had assigned a working color space or not within AE).
Automator only gives three color profile options, HD, SD, or PAL. I tried using HD as this is the size of video I normally work in (although I am also working in PAL), and ran Automator. I also tried using PAL and got identical results. It took about 30 seconds to finish and the result indeed looked much better in QT, and opened up in AE looking identical to a copy of the same .mov file with no color correction.
However, there is *still some change in the image quality as it appears in QT from how it (and the original) appears in AE*.
Original created / displayed in AE: What I am trying to maintain
Rendered out, Automator color profile HD assigned, and opened in QT: Gamma looks good but colors slightly more saturated than original in AE.
Rendered out with no color profile: Original problem with large gamma shift making everything bleached/washed out.
I have a screen shot I can show you to illustrate this here:
    http://www.yousendit.com/download/THE0ek9xa0RxRTNIRGc9PQ
While the difference is subtle you can look at the RGB numbers and see the middle example is indeed more saturated.
Perhaps I need to use another color profile when working with the animation codec for animations created from scratch in AE to avoid this saturation shift, other than HD or PAL? Would you know of how to do this?
Also, would you know of how to change this, and perhaps a way of changing qucktime's interpretation rules for all animation files per se, so that I do not need to go through every .mov with the animation codec and assign profiles to them?
Many thanks for your time and sorry for being so long winded!

  • AE CS4 - Import problem (JVC Everio clips in 16:9)

    Hi everyone,
I hope someone can help me with this because it is driving me crazy I got a  JVC Everio "GZ-MG750" camcorder some months ago and I must say I first had problems with "Export" (JVC to PC) because when you have recorded the clips in 16:9, if you don't use what is called sdcopy.exe, clips in your PC become 4:3.This [sdcopy] allows you to keep the original aspect ratio.
Apart from that... the problem is, I am starting to learn After Effects CS4 and I have "Import" problems and I have gotten stuck on this. My clips are supposed to be 16:9, but when I import them, they become 4:3, and if I type that my composition must be 16:9, etc. it works but not with the clips. The clips are still in 4:3 and I can't understand it, because after all, they shouldn't be 4:3 anymore since I made the change of aspect ratio with sdcopy. It does work in Premiere CS4 (the video imported is 16:9) but not with After Effects CS4.
    What's happening here? Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marta

At the bottom of the Comp Window you'll find the pixel aspect ratio compensation toggle switch.  Toggled on, everything's in the proper screen aspect ratio, but the edges look stair-steppy, expecially text & graphics.  Toggled off, everything is smooth but not in the proper screen aspect ratio.
When rendered, everything will be in the same screen and pixel aspect ratios as your comp, AND it will be nice & smooth.
