After erasing drive, tried to use Internet Recovery to download a bootable system

hi
i need some help.
after erasing the drive on my macbook Air, I tried to use Internet Recovery to download a bootable system, but after going through the motions of the spinning world globe and (probably) actually downloading something (it takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour to finish) and after it restarts, it cant find any system, and subsequently gives the folder with question mark, not able to find any bootable system.
what am i doing wrong?
how can i get mountain lion on it (like before) so that i can upgrade to mavericks?
thanks

The Online Internet Recovery system, Cmd + Option/alt + r keys at startup, will give you whichever OS X version originally came on that Mac when it was shipped from the factory new. That is IF it originally came with one of the Download Only version of OS X, Lion, Mt Lion or Mavericks.
If it originally came with Lion Yes you will need to buy Mt Lion from the Mac App Store or get Mavericks for Free. If it originally came with Mt Lion the newer Point version of that will be downloaded and installed.

How do I use Internet recovery feature to reinstall osx lion?

Restart with the COMMAND+OPTION+R keys pressed and held until you see a spinning globe. This boots into Internet Recovery and the Apple servers. You can then download/install the most current version of OS X that was pre-installed on your Mini.
To restart into the Recovery HD, press and hold the COMMAND+R keys until you see the Apple logo. This boots into Recovery Mode from your internal drive's Recovery HD. You can then download/install the most current version of OS X that is installed on your Mini.

  • Mac not connecting to a wifi network when trying to reinstall OSX using Internet recovery

Hi guys. I'm using a Macbook Air(late 2010 model) and seem to have some trouble reinstallling OSX 10.8.5 using Internet recovery. When I'm trying to reinstall the OS running the recovery mode, the wifi is not connecting. After some trials I noticed that when I run the recovery mode, the network settings are automatically going back to defualt ( I use manual IP address and everything but in recovery mode it falls back to 'Using DHCP'). Just let me know if I'm supposed to provide any other information. I request everyone to help me with this. Thanks in advance.

I reccomend to set ur router back to dchp and after you are done with recovery set it back to manual ip. Or if you have the DMG of the ur installation, create a bootable installation disk. Several tutorials on youtube based on your OSX version and reformat that way.

  • Want to  use internet recovery to reload ML, but says can't

I've given up on waiting for Apple to fix, or acknowledge the problem I have (and many others) with my BT equipment.
I thought I could just use Internet Rcovery to wipe the existing installation, and reload a fresh (working) copy of Mountain Lion (I do not have files/info on this machine I need).
When I try and  update, it says " OS X cannot be installed on "Macintosh HD" (it said at first "because a newer version exists", but that message is no longer shown)
Am I missing something, all I really want to do not is go back to a working OS

Well, Mountain Lion has been replaced by Yosemite. You can install Yosemite but not Mountain Lion using Internet Recovery. Also, to use full Internet Recovery you will need a 2011 model or later: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.
You should also take a look at: The Worst Bugs in OS X Yosemite and How to Fix Them that includes a possible solution for BT problems.
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

    I
got your message about making sure to use the machine specific disk that came with my machine. Unfortunately, Apple no longer sells Tiger replacement disks. I've got a couple of bids out on ebay, and will update when I have news to add to this post.
Thank you for your help, Frank!
To be clear you called the 800 number and explained what the situation was, old machine and lost the original DVD's?
Just checking because if you just called and tried to buy the DVD's they might tell you they no longer sell them but you aren't really trying to buy them your trying to replace the ones that are missing.
Ebay may work but there is a certain specificity to the DVD's required which, even if they seem right, might not work.
Good luck either way. If you get a chance when you get the DVD's I'd be interested in hearing how it all works out.

Unable to install maverick as there's no disc visible to select
If I try to verify the start up disc is greyed out
    Starting up with cmd r
    Tried to reset PRAM
Start up disc does not display anything
ALL TO NO AVAIL, is the hard drive defunct or is there anything else I can try ?
    Many thanks for your help

See this thread, this is 3rd regarding recovery/restore - as a starting point.
Obviously it is easier if you have a couple backups, a drive you can use, and don't mind erasing the internal drive.
It is a lot easier then. And it would be easier if you didn't have a notebook. This forum is not MacBook Pro but the tower or workstation.

  • When using internet recovery it asks me for apple id

Okay, so I got sick of OS X Yosemite. I now really want to go back to Lion so I did Internet Recovery by pressing Cmd+option+R
The OS X that came up was OS X Lion. After it asks me where it wants me to install Lion, it asks for my apple ID. While I enter apple id, it says "This item is temporarily unavaliable, try again later".
Is there anyway to bypass the apple id verfication? Would really like an answer quick

The only way you can install Lion is if you have purchased a coupon to download Lion or if you have the Lion installer on a USB flash drive.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
If your computer originally came with Snow Leopard or earlier installed, then you can reinstall Snow Leopard, update it to 10.6.8, to go the App Store and try downloading your old Lion purchase from the Purchase page in App Store.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • If i use internet recovery, will my documents be saved

all my documents for my capstone are in my documents folder. I had the flashing question mark and got as far as internet recovery. is it safe to proceed or should I have the apple store recover my files for me?

Just don't erase the hard drive. But I would at least do this:
    Boot from your Recovery  HD:
To boot from the Recovery HD restart the computer. After the chime hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.

  • Is there a way to recover iPhoto library after erasing drive and clean install of Mavericks?

Is there a way to recover the photos in my iphoto library after erasing my SSD drive and reinstalling mavericks? My time capsule backed everything up except iphoto, and I had 3 years worth of important photots in there. Is there any way to recover them?

In addition to using a Time Capsule drive and using Time Machine, with this painful lesson learned, in the near future, purchase another high quality, high speed (USB 3.0, Thundetbolt OR FireWIre 800 depending what connections are on your Mac) external hard drive, formatted for Mac, and use a data cloning app such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make bootable clones/copies of your Mac's entire internal hard drive.
Bootable clones and data cloning apps are the best and most reliable way of creating reliable backups of your important data in the future.
Also, my other advise stands, too! If you have data the is like "gold" to you copy this data manually to other media such as CDs/DVDs and/or high capacity USB flash drives.
Sorry you have lost your precious photos.
Painful lesson, but good info to prevent this all from happening, again.
WIth computers, having many copies and redundancies of data is key to never losing important computer data.
    Again, sorry.

I had a problem with IE and removed it. Now I cannot put it back. Mozila works fine if I type in the address to every site I visit. I cannot seem to create a shortcut to use thru Mozila. I created a shortcut, but every time I click on it, my computer tries to use IE. Help.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
