After failed Tiger Upgrade Powermac G4 doens't boot

Hi,
Basically the subject says all: A friend asked me to install Tiger on her Powerbook G4 that has been running Panther 10.3.9.
During the installation, the installer halted and said "an error occured could not install OS X" or something similiar (in German). No reason was given, just "an error occured".
Anyway I changed the startup volume to Mac OS X HD where Panther is supposed to be and rebooted. After hearing the first chime the boot up gets stuck at the grey screen (Apple + progresswheel) but then nothing happens anymore.
I can boot holding the option key to go to startup volume, where again I can select the MacOSX HD. Also I was able to boot into the Open Firmware.
I browsed through the support forums but was not able to find a solution. What could I do?
Thanks a lot for helping me (I still haven't told my friend...)
Georg

Look at *Gray screen appears during startup*
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
This link says it applies to Tiger, but try the suggestions. May also work with Panther.
Can you boot using a Panther installer? If so, do an Archive & Install & check to preserve user settings. When you attempted to install Tiger from an installer for another model Mac, you've probably corrupted the current Panther system files.
Hopefully your friend has a backup of the files on the hard drive, because you may have to erase the hard drive & reinstall the Panther system & applications.
 Cheers, Tom

  • Apps crashing after failed memory upgrade

    Over the Christmas holiday I had attempted to upgrade my dual 1.8GHz G5 PowerMac from 1 GByte to 3 GByte with memory from Crucial. However there must be a fault with one of the DIMM modules - which are now being replaced by Crucial under their RMA scheme - and I aborted the upgrade.
    However the nature of the memory fault was that the machine was very slow going through its initial hardware check then after booting up OSX the system either crashed immediately or within a minute or so of starting.
    The Mac was unusable but Mail and several other applications load at start up, presumably access their databases and possibly corrupt them when the machine crashed.
    I have now reverted to 1GByte which works as before, but whenever I try to open an email item, Mail crashes and leaves me at this reporting prompt - which itself also crashes if I try to add a comment before sending it to Apple.
    Since then I have found that Disc utility also crashes in the same way, but I have been able to boot up from the 10.4 issue DVD and then run disc utility which reported a few permission errors which have been fixed. No hardware errors have been reported.
    Any advice on possible cause and corrective action would be welcomed. I have recent incremental back ups and should be able to retrieve everything, but that might not be the cause and I would like guidance on what I should do ---- obliterating 10 years worth of emails isn't an option!!
    I have zapped my PRAM but the crashing apps just don't go away

    Proceed as described in the following article and post back with your observations if the problem persists:

  • Error Code 2300 on Restore after failed Os4 upgrade.

    Pretty simple. Attempted to upgrade to the new Os4 with a 2nd gen iPod touch. For whatever reason, iTunes recognizes it, but the update failed which sent it into recovery mode. After 6 attempts at a restore, error code 2300 doesn't fail to pop up while preparing the iPod for restore. I've also tried 3 different USB ports- aiming for different computers later in the day. I don't want to have to invest money into a newer iPod - even though this one is 1 1/2-2 years old just about. Thankfully music is on the computer happily waiting to be loaded back in - so the only issue is getting the iPod itself to restore or SOMETHING. Paper weight - no thanks.
    Any help is appreciated.

    I have the same issue. from what i've gathered the issue is with the data transfer via usb

  • How can I re-install 10.4.1 after failing Leopard upgrade?

    I failed getting Leopard to upgrade my computer; but, it really messed up my previously working OSX 10.4.1. My Address Book is empty, my Safari bookmarks are wiped out; I found my mailbox folders (I really don't know how) and imported them. My HP printer won't mount. It's just a mess. Unfortunately, I didn't have my hard drive backed up before I tried the 10.5 mount.
    So, I've now ordered an external hard drive; how should I go about making things aright?
    PS I sent Leopard back to Apple; I will not be an early adopter on this one!

    Use the external hard drive to back up all your documents, files, applications etc (though some applications may have to be reinstalled from the original installers as they place files in the System).
    Then use 'erase and install' to reinstall Tiger on the original disk: obviously, doing this will erase everything on the disk.

  • Keychain behaves different after Snow Tiger upgrade

    Under Tiger when I opened Apple Mail I would get a window that said "Mail wants to use Login Keychain". This would happen when I first opened Mail and that was all.
    After installing Snow Tiger I get this window popping up repeatedly -- every time I receive or send mail.
    I've read numerous articles on Keychain Access, but I can't seem to understand how this works or how to fix it. Maybe I'm a bit dense, but it all just confuses me more.
    Any suggestions?

    Start with perusing the hits from this google search: *mail AND password site:apple.com*.
    BTW, it's Snow Leopard, not Tiger.

  • White screen after failed Lion upgrade - how can I recover?

    After running the Lion upgrade, I received an error that said Lion could not be installed becuase a recovery disc could not be created.  The computer then restarted to a white screen.  I've tried resetting PRAM, unpugging, and booting from a Snow Leopard CD, but I can't get past the white screen.  All external drives are unplugged.  Any ideas?

    I can't speak to iPhoto (did you ask about iPhoto?), but:
    The version of Quicken 2007 for Lion is 16.1.1, which now offers an update to version 16.1.2 for Mountain Lion (among other fixes).
    Presumably the Mountain Lion version is what is being offered on the online download that you acquired.  You could check the version number in the Quicken 2007 menu in About Quicken and report back to us anxious iPhoto users.

  • Mac won't start after failed OS upgrade

    I attempted to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard using an installation disc. The installion failed and now my mac won't start. It hangs on the apple logo screen for about 2 minutes then dies. I've tried booting from the disc and using the repair disk utility but I get an error saying the disk can't be repaired and instructing me to back up my files and erase the disk. Problem is, I can't get to my files because all I can do is boot from the disc drive. Can anyone suggest a way get the installion to work, or a way to back up my files?
    iMac is 3 years old, 4 Gb ram and 2.66 Gh processor
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Possibly we can save some of the files.
    When booted from the Install Disc...
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
          *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    Hopefully you have another external drive and can Image the whole internal drive to an external.

  • After Clean Instal Tiger, upgrading to 10.4.7. many errors appeared

    I wiped my boot drive, installed tiger, upgraded combo 10.4.7. Created anount account user. Things were spiffy for a moment until I mounted my firewire drives and some dmg file. BLAM! CRASH! MAYDAY MAYDAY! RUN FOR COVER into the apple forum! I've search forums for several problems and was unable to find solution but did on my own.
    Errors:
    Media ejectables: DMG, firewire drives, cd, dvd would not appear (but would on other users) I tried permission fix, disconnecting, whatever.
    Internal audio wasn't working. Volume control was dissabled, and volume icon dissappeared from menubar after clicking it.
    Worse of all: My icons on my sidebar were missing, desktop icons were randomly missing. I did comand J on finder and select show icon and show preview. That worked until log out, log in. Icons were switched around to the wrong ones, I thought I was on mars.
    What else, well didn't get around much since I tried to deal with one problem at a time - it became overwhelming.
    Before erasing the drive and reinstalling for another try, I decided to trash all my contents in my prefs folder in my home/personal directory (didn't empty trash). Logged out and back in. I'm back in business!
    Those of you may want to try that and may have to re-adjust all your settings, serials, etc. Or you could drag some prefs back to folder to to find culprit or just the ones you really need. When happy with everything... Take out the garbage!
    Hope it works for you as well.

    It's explained as is. Delete some preference files.

  • AIA 2.0.1 O2B Order synchronization fails after the SOA Upgrade to 10.1.3.4

    Hi,
    I have the AIA 2.0.1 installed on the system with the Order to Bill PIP flow working fine until I upgraded the SOA Suite from 10.1.3.3 to 10.1.3.4.
    After the SOA upgrade the order synchronization from CRM(8.1.1) to BRM(7.3) fails with the error message
    "exception on JaxRpc invoke: HTTP transport error: java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol: eis/BRM"
    I have checked the Application Server for the availability of BRM Adapter.
    The BRM Adapter is available and properly configured. The JNDI Location for the BRM Adpater is eis/BRM itself.
    Can anyone please help resolve this issue.
    Thanks in Advance

    Don't upgrade your Leopard clients. While running Xsan 1.4.2 on G5 Xserves running 10.4.11 works, it is preferred to keep your server running a newer OS than the clients. Again, Mac OS X 10.5.2 does work with Xsan 1.4.2 and MDCs running 10.4.11 but who knows if an upgrade will break this? Alternatively you could buy a couple seats of Xsan 2 and change your controllers to be newer intel Macs (Mac Pro or Xserve).

      where nj.mid=TMP_mid and nj.status = 'CTOVRQ';
      for i in c1(v_time_stamp,TMP_mid) loop
      missed_text:=missed_text||' '||i.text;
      END Loop;
      ELSIF ('Rejected'='Rejected' OR 'REJECTED'='REJECTED') then
      IF ('TERMINATED' in ('TERMINATED')) THEN
      Select min(nj.update_date),max(nj.ENDDATE) into v_time_stamp,v_end_time

      for i in c2(v_time_stamp,TMP_mid,v_end_time) loop
      missed_text:=missed_text||' '||i.text;
      END Loop;
      ELSE

      END Loop;
      END IF;
      ELSE missed_text := null;
      END IF;
    return(missed_text);
    End;
    Note:- Text column from table msgnotes is of datatype CLOB.
    I have executed report having this function before oracle upgrade and it works fine.
    But when i am trying to execute report after oracle version upgrade from 11.2.0.3.0 to 11.2.0.4.0 with same data report fails with runtime error Rep-1401: '' Fatal PL/SQL Error.
    With New version we tried to typecast Text column from clob to varchar and executed report then it works... but report runs on old version without any explicit typecasting.
    Please note when i run and call this funtion from sql developer with upgraded database version it works fine.
    Please advise.

    This error can possibly depend on the fact that the PL/SQL engines are in different versions. When using SQL Developer you use the PL/SQL engine in the database. When using Oracle Reports you use the PL/SQL engine in the Oracle Reports Server (Web Logic Server even maybe). These versions - in the Forms and Reports realm - are different (read: a lower version) than the PL/SQL engine in the database.
    If I check what version I have in Oracle Forms, as an example, I get 11.1.0.7.0 (Help in the Oracle Forms Builder menu) but in the database I have (select * from product_component_version;) 11.2.0.3.0.
    That COULD be your issue...how to fix it I am not sure...

  • Lost files after Tiger upgrade.

    My problem: All music files dissapeared from iTunes but still now retrieved from elsewhere on the drive, all vCards are now vanished completely, all photos gone from iPhoto, now luckily retrieved and imported back. All filed mail gone from Mail, now suddenly vanished still after retrieving and reimporting. Also mail account settings suddenly gone. I know I have myself to blame for not backing up, but why the h... is this happening? Also a lot of my settings is "being ignored" after restarting. What has really happened? How can I retrieve? I connected my iPod 4GB and turned it to manual, could it be the cause? Tried to download all my pics to it, but there was no dialogue window. Except the nogo sign on the iPod. Which I had to ignore after an hour. ALL of THIS happened after a SUCCESSFULL upgrade to Tiger. ALL my files were initially intact. IS the iPod the sinner here?

    There are some good reasons there to backup first, and to do some basic repairing and maintenance before any upgrade. Pick up a good Firewire drive to hold 2x what you think you need.
    Try using Disk Utility 10.4.6 DVD or fsck to repair your drive and then do a Safe Boot.
    You don't say if this was 10.4.8 update from .7, or something else, but I would recommend only using the standalone and combo updaters. And never use your Mac while updating, and always do a restart before the update (ideally having repaired the drive first anyway).

  • X-Windows fails after Every Major Upgrade: About to give up Archlinux

    I have resigned myself to this behavior.  I need to get Nvidia cuda toolkit working and after a major upgrade that effects X-windows I lose X.
    Usually my fix is to reinstall nvidia drivers and cuda, sometimes successfully from aur but usually not.  Well this time I'm stuck.
    The proprietary driver won't work either,  it wants kernel sources,  but after installing them it still can't find them.  Maybe they are there and I just need to supply some command line arguments,  but I grow weary of this.
    I just can no longer afford to waste hours and hours configuring low level BS to get my work done.
    I'm going to step away from my console now and get some needed real work done. Does anyone want to talk me out of this?  I'll probably blow away archlinux and replace it with ubuntu or maybe scientific linux if this persists.
    I really wish Arch spent a little bit more time making sure that they would support drivers for the major vendors,  e.g. AMD and Nvidia.  Nvidia's cuda drivers really have problems with some of the latest stuff.  Perhaps it's just a bad match and I should another distro. Not sure.  Thoughts?

    ewaller wrote:
    I don't use Nvidia, so I cannot share your pain.  I can say that all OSes require some level of maintenance.  Some require it continuously.  Others less so.  Some require little for long periods, followed by re-installs.   It seems the more control you have, the more effort is required.  Some are walled gardens, some are driven by marketing departments, some by ideology.
    For me, Arch is the compromise I need.  A great deal of control.  Never a need to start over from scratch.  It does what I want, and I don't have to compile it from scratch.  Were it not for Arch, I'd still be with Gentoo (the penultimate disto, IMHO)
    Regardless, it is your system.  YMMV.
    Yes I liked the control Arch gave me and I liked the fact they were the first to get the latest stuff.  I fully understand that this has consequences.  Nvidia has to maintain support for their windows and probably MAC drivers first.  So they are always a distro rev or two behind in their linux support.  I'm surprised there isn't more whining about Nvidia support.  Maybe my configuration is a little odd, and it's just working for most,  but my gpu, motherboard and cpu are fairly standard,  though possibly dated by a year or two.
    Well I'm going to give it one more try before punting.  I'll do some reading on how to install nvidia drivers first and see if I can make any progress.
    Thanks for the input.

  • Ipod sync error "copy disk failed..read or written to" after 7.3 upgrade

    This happened immed. after 7.2 upgrade and it "magically" went away after about a week. Now, after 7.3 it is happening again. It will only sync up a few songs at a time, a podcast here an there, before giving the error message. Got rid of any potentially corrupt files, tried other usb ports, did a restore, did everything recommended for this error message. This is 5th gen video ipod on a g5. Why does this keep occurring after iTunes upgrades, and what to do about it?

    i just got a 30gig and was trying to load it with
    music and getting the same message. what finally
    worked was unhooking a usb hub and just hooking only
    the ipod and keyboard to the back of the pc. now i
    have to figure out how to get the rest of my usb

    the ipod.
    Try a powered USB hub...
