After formatting and creating two partitions on my external HD, why is Time Machine taking 25x longer to perform a backup?

Hi.
I bought a macbookpro 13"retina, new two weeks ago and a G-tech 1TB external drive from the apple store. It's my first mac.
I performed a backup, using Time Machine, which copied 18 GB onto he 1TB external HD in around 20 minutes.
After a little more reading, I realised I should use Disk utility to partition the 1TB external G-tech drive into a 250gb partition, and a 750gb partition.
[My MBP has a 250gb flash HD. I'll use the other 750gb for storage of my other files, like photos, music etc.]
So, using disk utility I formatted the 1TB exernal drive, then created two partitions.
However, I've started backing up my data using time machine again, onto the 250gb partition, on the external drive, and its now taking 5 hours to copy the 19.81GB
So why is it taking 25x longer than the first time I did it? [First time it took 20 minutes]

Since performing the fist backup, a couple of days ago, which took twenty minutes, and the second backup, which is taking 5 hours, I installed MS office for Mac 2011 and Silverlight.
Dont know if thats responsible?

We have a 1.2T Seagate external hard drive. I partitioned it so that I could use part of it for my Time Machine backups and want to be able to use the rest of it for the PCs in the house. no, that was the right choice. I don't know what's going on there. you just might need to reformat the whole drive. also check the partition scheme for the drive. it should be GUID. if it's not GUID repartition the drive with GUID partition scheme.

After having the logic board replaced, Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the same backup files as before.

After having the logic board replaced due to bad NVidia chip, my Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the current backup. Is there a way to reset something to get Time Machine to continue to use the same backup files as before for this laptop?

As far as TM is concerned you have a new computer, so it will make a new backup. If you don't have the space for both backups then erase your backup drive before backing up the computer.

It will return the partition which is active but fails to list the partition which is hidden. The same piece of code was supported on WinPE 2.0

I am giving the complete code, may be you are able to understand better. We are using Win32_LogicalDisk to retrieves the complete information of all the drives (like C:, D:) including removable drives.

I have an external hard drive I want to use for both PC and Mac.
Can somebody please help me on how to create two partitions on the hard drive, one with Mac extended format and one with NTFS format.

No need to format to NTFS, you can convert to NTFS with no destruction of data.

Problem in Shrink my local disk C and create new partitions on it.

I am trying to Shrink my local disk C (current boot volume) and create new partitions on it. But I am getting a Warning message that If I do so, I won't be able to boot from any volume excepet the the current boot Volume.
In case if I need to do the recovery for my computer what will happen. does it mean that I can't do the recovery from my hard disk?

Hello Kaj_R.
If you change the volumes it is quite likely that the recovery partition will not function. I suggest you create a set of Recovery Media before messing with the partitions.

Partitioning Hard Drive for Use with Mac (Time Machine) and Windows

I have a brand new Imac on which I am also running WIndows Vista through Boot Camp (sweet, by the way). I have a large external hard drive on which I set up Time Machine easily enough. I would like to partition the drive somehow so that I could use half the drive to separately back up files on the WIndows side, but I can't seem to do this. Any suggestions? Is this even possible with Time Machine?

You can use Disk Utility create two partitions. Choose FAT for the Windows partition and Mac Extended (Journaled) for the Mac. One limitation of FAT32 is that you can't write files bigger than 4GB. You can reformat this partition as NTFS within Vista which will allow bigger file sizes but you won't be able to write to this partition from within OS X without other utilities. Also you can't write to the OS X partition from Vista without other software.
Time Machine will not be able to back up the windows formatted drive partition.

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
4. Click on the Erase tab.
5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
7. Click the Partition tab.
8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
10. Click Apply.
11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

If I delete a folder from my MacBook Air after backing my computer up with TimeMachine, will the folder and its contents stay on the external drive the next time I back up my computer?

It's my understanding that TimeMachine intelligently backups computer system onto an external hard drive and keeps the backup up to date. Currently my MacBook Air is almost out of memory, so I was hoping to move all of my pictures and music to an external hard drive via TimeMachine and then delete the files from my laptop. As TimeMachine continues to backup my computer over the weeks and months after, will it see that the files are no longer on my computer and then delete them from my hard drive? I just don't want to lose the music and pictures I'm deleting in order to make more room.

Time Machine won't delete them from the backup drive until it runs out of space, but other things can. Put them on a second external drive and set Time Machine to back it up as well.

My Time Machine keeps asking to complete a new backup instantly after I just created a new back up

I recentlly starting using a Seagate wireless external hard drive to back up with Time Machine. The initial back up took 8-10 hours and that was at the beginning of April. Now at least once a week if not more Time Machine will give me a prompt saying "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on "XXX." To improve reliability Time Machine must create a new backup for you. Click start new back up to create a new back up. This will remove your exisiting backup history. This could take several hours."
I understand how the initial back up can take hours. What I don't understand is why Time Machine is no longer taking snapshots of my computer to back up and instead has to delete what back up history I have and start all over. It's time consuming and doesn't make me feel very safe about my back ups. I've tried exploring the Time Machine preferences but there really isn't much I can figure out to change. I contacted Seagate directly and since I'm not using their software only their device they say it's an Apple and Time Machine problem.
Why is this happening and how can I change the settings to avoid having to create an entirely new backup weekly?

Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

Need to format "free space" of external hard drive for Time Machine

I just recently purchased a MacBook Air and want to set up Time Machine with my external hard drive. I'm migrating from Windows 7 so before purchasing my new Mac, I transferred about 100 GB of data from my PC to my external hard drive that I wanted to keep. The external hard drive has a partition of 100 GB (91 GB used) and 365 GB of "free space". I would like to know how to format that free space so that I can use it with Time Machine but at the same time not lose any of my data on the first partition. I've looked around in the Disk Utility but it doesn't give any options to format the free space.

You should be able to repartition it, but that requires that the HD was formatted with Mac OS X Extended and journaling turned on. All I can suggest is you get another HD or move the 100 GB of stuff to the MBA, erase, reformat, and partition into two pieces, copy the 100 GB stuff back to the HD, and then it's set for TM.

Why does Time Machine forget "everything" after Mountain Lion update?

After updating to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard), I fired up my trusty external hard drive which contains my Time Machine backups (and nothing else) - of course I had run a backup right before upgrading to be sure. Two things are deeply disturbing: 1) The drive keeps on "rattling" as if a process is constantly reading or writing to it - even with Time Machine "OFF". Why? I (tried to) explicitly disable(d) Spotlight searching that drive, and nothing else should be accessing it! (I wish there was a way to simply turn Spotlight OFF for a while - I suspect it of a lot of crashes I experience).
Anyway, even more disturbing: Opening the System Preference Panel and sliding Time Machine to "On", it claims there is NO backup at all! Oldest backup: "NONE". Latest backup: "NONE". This is B.S.! BTW, opening the "Time Machine" app proper shows all the recent backups, so they are still there. So why doesn't the Time Machine Preference Panel not recognize them? Under these circumstances, is it safe to enable backups??? I am very afraid that if I let Time Machine proceed, it will try to create a full new backup, perhaps overriding all the snapshots from the past that are still stored on that disk. For one, even at 1 TB, my disk is not big enough to take another full backup on top of what's already stored on there. Any advice (other than "buy another hard disk just to be safe")?

I am grateful for your advice and encouraging words, but I am (and remain) at my wit's ends as far as Time Machine is concerned. While I'm sure 99.99% of Mac users have no problem, there must be SOMETHING idiosyncratic about my own setup that has consistently crashed TM in the past, and now (after upgrading to Mountain Lion), it simply refuses to work EVER. Mind you, I'm NOT a "hacker" who installs non-standard software or likes to poke around in the Kernel.
Below is a shortened version of the Console output during my latest attempt - after 3 tries (after running disk utility to repair my permissions and check the hard drive), it never makes it beyond about 4 Gb before crashing. (And, what's worse, if I don't immediately react, TM very often crashes the whole computer to the point where NOTHING works anymore - requiring a restart. Even with Mountain Lion).

I agree entirely, been messing with this since the upgrade to Mavericks but I didn't find it quite as easy as uninstalling the WD smartware as it still operates when you plug the drive back in - I think it gets loaded onto the drive and runs from within (?). The advice from WD was that time machine was faulty and I should contact Apple...thanks guys!
Anyway, for the OP's benefit, this is what I found:
1. My problem was that time machine couldn't see any further back than before the Mavericks install, but if I opened up and interrogated the WD drive, the old backups were still there.
2. When TM started doing new backups, it overwrote the ones that it could see, not the oldest ones on the drive. This indicated to
me that the WD software had somehow partitioned off the old backups and excluded that part of the drive from being overwritten. Of course, as the drive was practically full, it meant that any new backups wouldn't fit in the available space.....
3. The only way I could find to resolve this was to use the disc utility to erase and repartition the external drive. This will obviously remove all of the old files and backups, but I was more concerned about keeping a current profile as backup rather than a load of stuff from months ago.
4. Anyway, what happens after the eraseure has completed is that you get the WD icon on the desktop, and you're invited to install the software - this means the software has now been deleted. Juts don't reinstall it, just let TM do it's backup and all is well.
Usual disclaimers and warnings about keeping another copy of your system etc. obviously apply, and I know this is a radical move to delete all your old data but it worked for me. I guess I didn't appreciate that you could use the external drive without the software that came with it and just followed the screen guide.
I'm also aware that if you don't want to use TM to do a complete restore and only want to find one old version of a document, this is difficult. However, you can then install the WD software and find the file but you'll then have to do this all again.....

It began after a series of power outages (my equipment is protected by a surge protector with battery backup), and was shut down correctly. Then it began by not recognizing my disk and my Time Machine password, although I am positive it was correct. I tried NUMEROUS times to get into it. It says the disk is damaged and needs to be erased and started over. How can I back up my files on my Mac so I can do that? I have no other disk to back up to. I found the files in a folder called "Backups.backupdb", and tried to copy them into a folder, but get the message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup." The "lost+found" folder did copy for me. Will I just have to lose 4 years of backups?

I have the same issue. Usually hangs after 10K od sometimes after 18MB of backup file.
Config: iTunes 10.4., Win 7 64bit, iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3
I tried all of these without success:
- deleted backups via iTunes / Preferences
- deleted backups from sync folder
- created a new admin user and tried to sync
- reinstalled iTunes
- ran all Windows updates, restarted, reinstalled iTunes
- ran iTunes / Diagnostics (says everything okay, only info which is strange: diag says I am not a admin user, which is not correct)
Nothing helped. Who can help. I hope someone from Apple can take care, as I seem not to be the only one. Actually iTunes is the worst part about iPhone. Hope with iOS 5 and Cloud sync to get rid of iTunes.
