After formatting my HD and eventually restore my system from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?

I have a Time Capsule (4th Gen) and my backups on it, I need to completely erase my hard drive. My question is: after formatting my MacBook HD and eventually restore my system (OS X 10.6.8) from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old* backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?
*(-and to the newer backups- if I had not restored my system from the last backup).
THANKS

That's a good question. Technically, Time Machine should make a new backup but not erase any old backups. But if there isn't sufficient space on the backup drive, then I'm not sure if Time Machine will simply warn you or just go ahead and remove old backups to make room for the new ones.
In any case, the new backup should have a different backup folder on the backup drive. That's my understanding. You can learn more at pondini.org.

  • Restore iPhotoLibrary specifically from EXTERNAL Hard drive  Time Machine back up?

My laptop Photo Library is corrupted somehow. I tried to restore from a prior in Time Machine on laptop and made the mistake of not saying to keep BOTH copies,  but after trying for 3 hours of telling me it was doing it through various windows, a little one popped open saying something about permissions and it opened an old iPhotoLibrary  from 2 years ago! ... I do have that one now and am copying it off my laptop as fast as I can to FLICKR
cuz APPLE has become a PHOTO sinkhole... (We are talking 20,000 pics folks with scanned in family pics from 100 yrs ago!)
I think I have a good copy on my External Hard Drive Time Machine back up from about 3 weeks ago. How do I use that to Restore from
or should I just wait for this PHOTOS thing to come out?
NEXT Question is there a convenient way to split it into MULTIPLE ones..eg KEEP old stable photos in one or more.
and use another for all the new ones not editted or sorted yet? I do see there is a new Option under iPHOTO/File menu to just switch
libraries but, of course, you cant even see that if your Library wont open!

For TM help post in the forum for your OS - and see https://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/ and http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html and http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Depends on undisclosed information
With the current OS and iPhoto you switch library using the switch library command - with any version you can switch libraries by holding the option key down while you launch iPhoto which brings up the select library window
And generally it is not a smart idea to have multiple iPhoto libraries - it generally has no advantages and makes things much more difficult and complicated and often leads to user errors that cause major problems
If you want to anyway the most convent way to split libraries is to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -

  • How can I restore my contacts from a snow leopard time machine to clean instal of Lion

I recently did a clean instal of Lion (which was wayyyyy to difficult by the way--why this wasnt an easy option to begin with I do not know and am not happy about).
In my sleep depravation from the previous problem I accidentally synced my contacts from mobile me to take my computer contacts (deleting all my contacts from my phone and computer).
Fortunately I have a back up on my time machine from my previously installed Snow Leopard.
I tried to restore these files, but they seem to not be compatible.
    Steps I took:
1.) -Opened Address Book in Lion
    -Opened time machine
notes: i could not go backward in time with lion address book
2.) -Copied files from time machine address book to desktop
    -completely unable to open files.
I do not want to use migration assistant because it seems to want to take ALL my files over and frankly thats not what I want to do at all.
    PLEASE HELP!

  • Can't restore my data from hard drive with time machine

So basically I recently backed up my things on an external 1TB Seagate hard drive via Time Machine on my Mac. I then restored my Mac to its factory settings. However when I plugged in my hard drive it didn't show up in my finder. I opened Disk Utility and it shows up there but when I tried to restore my data it wasn't able to find it. This is so weird and I'm so scared can someone please help me

Sounds like the TimeMachine drive is defective.
Uplug it and reboot and see if your problems go away.
If your TimeMachine is broken it might be possible to do data recovery on it, you can take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they will image it so the files are accessible, then you can pick through the mess as long as it wasn't encrypted or Filevaulted.
TimeMachine uses a lot of placeholder files, basically the same name but minus the content of the files for each saved state.
It's a lot of work going through all the folders to find your original files but as long as the drive works the files should be able to be recovered.
Sorry about your problems, TimeMachine hasn't quite lived up to it's expectations and I try to warn everyone NOT to completely trust it.

  • How do you restore the system from a backup file that you created previously

I have a notebook, Pavilion g6 - 1031TX running windows 7 64bit OS, and ran the backup utility a few weeks ago before running a full system recovery to attemp to fix an issue - this issue was fixed by warranty, and now I need to recover everything from the backup files, I have run the restore executable in the folder and it created another folder on my C: drive (System recovery files), how do I use this to restore the system to its previous state?

Unfortunately, the backup utilty portion of Recovery is not optimal solution for restoring many files.Unless you know exactly where they go you are stuck. Most of the important stuff such as photos, music, etc will be in the 'Users' folder under your user name. You will have to manually move them to correct location.
A better option in the future is Windows 7's backup app in Control Panel.

  • Restoring entire system from a backup

For future use, I am interested in restoring my entire system,  but I am confused with the following directions:
"With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Recovery system (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility"
My mac book pro did not come with a Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc, so I'm not sure how to go about restoring my entire system.  What is a Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc?

That is the Snow Leopard installation disk used on older MBPs.  It does not apply to a MBP that came with Mt. Lion installed such as yours.
    Ciao.

I have an old IBook G4, purchased in 2006, I just want to know if I can still use email for me.com after August 31,2012

The machine has nothing to do with the email account.
If this was originally created as a mobileme accounts, and as long as you have migrated that mobileme account over to iCloud, then your email will continue as it was (on any machine or device).
You can set up iCloud IMAP email on any email client with these settings - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864

Purchases made do not count towards your storage limit.  They are always available.

    Hi Stavros0203,
When restoring your entire system from a Time Machine backup, it is restored to the state it was when that backup was made. See this article for reference -

  • After an erroneous contacts delete on the mac, they've been removed from icloud and all the synced devices. I was able to restore the contacts from a backup, but since the iCloud version is newer than the backuped one, they are deleted every iCloud sync

After an erroneous contacts delete on the mac, they've been removed from iCloud and all the synced devices.
I was able to restore the contacts from a backup, but since the iCloud version is newer than the backuped one, they are deleted every iCloud sync.
Now I have an iPhone with the contacts and iCloud deactivated, but I lost all the contacts on the Mac and the iPad.
There is a way to tell iCloud "restart using the contacts I have on this device"?

An iCloud backup will save the state of your Camera Roll at the time of the backup but, if you delete photos from the Camera Roll, they will not be in the next backup taken.
If you are using the iCloud Photo Library (beta) read this FAQ which will tell you what happens when you delete photos from one of the devices sharing the Photo Library.
iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
    The relevant section is:
How does iCloud delete photos and videos from iCloud Photo Library?
Deleting a photo or video from your Photos app will also remove the item from iCloud Photo Library and from your iCloud storage allocation. Photos and videos you remove can be recovered from the Recently Deleted album for 30 days. After 30 days, your content will be removed from the Recently Deleted album. Photos are backed up on our servers for up to 30 days after they're deleted from the Photos app. If you need to recover these photos during that time, contact Apple Support.

  • Updated iPad 1 to IOS 5. When trying to restore my iPad from my backup it gets half way through and the iPad reboots and iTunes says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)"

Updated iPad 1 to IOS 5. When trying to restore my iPad from my backup it gets half way through and the iPad reboots and iTunes says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)"
I have tried to restore my contacts and company data at least 20 times and every time half way through THE iPAD REBOOTS! When it boots back up it is at the brand new iPad screen.
This makes me angry as I do not use the iPad for fun and games. I use it for business. My company data and records for the last year are gone. ALL of my out standing customer invoices are gone. ALL payments received are gone! ALL Business contacts and emails ARE GONE! All my company, personal email accounts and settings ARE GONE!
What am I supposed to do now? In 6 hours I have to get on the road and conduct business with a empty blank factory out of the box iPad. How am I supposed to know who owes me money or who has paid their bills Apple? All of my meetings and calendar dates are GONE!
Everything was supposed to be backed up and restored after the update!
Question???WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS UPDATE WIPE OUT ALL SETTINGS AND APPS ON THE iPAD??? All the other updates left everything on the iPad intact and ONLY upgraded the IOS,and when it was done everything was still there.
Yes! I have done everything. Rebooted computer, checked for updates, Hard booted iPad, Factory restored iPad to ios 5 twice, tried every usb port I have, unplugged all other usb components.
Everytime half way through "Restoring iPad from backup..." The iPad turns off shows a spinning circle then shows the Apple logo and takes me to the brand new iPad setup screen.
Apple, you have no idea the level of stress you have created today.....

Check the console app to see if there are any error messages. I had one app showing an issue (Pet Hotel) the error was (truncated):
    ERROR: Restore message response: 102 rename error: File name too long (63) at path "/var/mobile/Library/SafeHarbor/com.pocketgems.tappethotel/Container/Documents/ savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHis tory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGa meHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/sa vedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHisto ry/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGame History/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/save dGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory /savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHi story/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedG ameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/s avedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHist ory/savedGameHistory/1313349538-pocket_gems_crash_report.txt" (MBErrorDomain/102)
I manually snyc'ed that particular app and then re-ran the restore and am now the proud owner of a working iphone. Not sure it is the same problem or app but looking in the console was the key!

  • After restoring System from TM backup is too big for drive

I had to restore my system from TM recently. When I plugged in the TM drive after restoring it tells me that there's not enough space on the drive to perform the backup.
Am I just going to have to chuck away the original backups and start a new one, or is there some way I can get the original backup to work again?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Yes, that's normal behavior, unfortunately. When you erase a disk (done automatically as part of a restore), everything you put back on it is treated as new: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
You may need a larger drive for your backups. It varies greatly, of course, depending on how you use your Mac, but a "rule of thumb" is that TM needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.

You might want to download something called an undelete utility. These can find files and recover them even after they appear to have been lost. There are some undelete utility programs that are free. Look at tucows.com
Also, it appears that you have POSSIBLY overwritten the actual files, which you moved manually, with I don't know what, which you moved in PSE's folder location view.
Next, in the future ... NEVER (that's: don't even think about it) move your photos in Windows. NEVER. NEVER. Not ever. Not once. This always (that's ALWAYS, as in 100% of the time) causes problems and usually makes things difficult to fix.
Lastly ... make regular backups! I must say this in the forums about seventy bazillion times a month. Make regular backups! Regular depends on how often you take photographs and edit them. Since my photographic activity usually happens on the weekends, I make backups every Sunday night. You may need a different schedule, depending on your activity level. MAKE REGULAR BACKUPS!
