After Gnome upgrade GDM login screen always says "Other..." [SOLVED]

After the recent Gnome upgrade GDM login screen started looking strange:
It shows a blue (highlighted?) disabled editbox that says "Other..." which I now must click on to get the usual username/password edit boxes. WTF?
Pressing Enter won't do anything, it wants a mouse click. I find it extremely annoying to click on the stupid thing every time I need to login. I have waited a couple of weeks hoping this would come up in Google searches but it didn't.
Can't do a screenshot of a login prompt.
Seems like the login is supposed to show a list of users plus "Other" thing at the bottom. But I'm not getting the list, just "Other..." box.

I haven't touched that setting and the list of users is visible for me (in addition to the Other... option).
# sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --get /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list
false
There, however, is the annoying issue that focus is initially outside the login box. I have to press arrow down before pressing enter to select a user. Perhaps that behavior would make more sense if I had several users on the system (i.e. the first one on the list would not necessarily be me).

  • XFCE4 with GDM - Login Screen Format Configuration?

How does one adjust/configure basic things like the size of the GDM login screen in this environment?  As it stands, it is much wider than my initial video mode allows, causing the Login button, for instance, to be off the right of the screen.  I can still log on using Tab to the button and such, but how does one fix the format problem?  Where is the configuration for the GDM login screen kept when using XFCE4 as the desktop manager?  All the suggestions so far presume you are using GNOME and not XFCE4.  Thanks!
    - Michael

I don't know how to tell which xorg video drivers are installed but will happily check if you tell me how to do so.
Adding vga=773 to the linux kernel cmdline (e/edit/f10 in grub) has no effect (no change in symptoms).  My xfce4 desktop has an initial resolution of 800x600, but automatically adjusts correctly when I fullscreen the VMware session with Ctrl+Alt-Enter, so I would have to say that xfce4 is performing properly after login.  The grub login menu acts as if the screen was perhaps 1024 wide, but it gets clipped to an actual 800x600 graphic window during login.
This is in a VMware Workstation 7.1 virtual machine installed using 'Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64-bit' which seemed to be the closest match to Arch.

  • [Solved] -Change the background image of gdm login screen.

When I first installed Arch I found that the default background image of gdm login screen ( or lock screen ) didn't look good with the desktop image that I had, so when I installed I looked for a way to change this. Sadly I could not find any direct and easy way, I looked in forums, I looked in gconf-editor and I could not find any relevant information about it. So I decided to look for the file and change it.
This was not the best option, clearly since now that I installed Gnome 2.30 it replaced the image with the old one and I had to change the file again. Since maybe some other people are having similar problems I thought I could just post the place where gdm is looking for the file, and if somebody has any suggestions about how to change it with a better way, I would welcome it .
After the longest intro to a directory, here it is: /usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/gnome/background-default.jpg
    Thank you .

Not to belabour the point, but after much hair pulling, I stumbled upon the following method, and it works perfectly. It sets the default background (for GDM login, Lock, desktop...etc.) for Gnome to whatever you want--even new users get the new default background on their desktop, although they can obviously change it, this is only the default. The page also shows a method of doing the same as gnome-appearance-properties method with just gconftool-2. I hope this doesn't just cause confusion.
[Note: It still has to be run as root of course. I used sudo.]

    gconftool-2 --direct \

  • [SOLVED] GDM / GNOME crashes on login screen after standby

Brand new Arch installation on a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 10. Most of the stuff works out of the box (except touchscreen https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1478128).
Using plain vanilla GNOME + GDM things seem ok, but once every few times upon returning from standby the login screen crashes and just freezes on the password screen. Nothing can be done (except for jumping to another vt) and a reboot is required.
If I SSH into the machine during this period, nothing suspicious shows up on journalctl.
    Any ideas what's going on?

Since I'm also getting some random freezes even when not in the login screen, I'm now suspecting a graphics driver problem.
Now testing UXA mode, per the Intel Graphics wiki page, hoping it will solve the freezes.
EDIT: UXA mode seems to have fixed the problem.

  • After Hard System Freeze, Login Screen is Pinstriped and Unresponsive

I had a hard freeze on Sunday on my G5/2x2 PowerMac running 10.5.6. I could move the mouse, but nothing else on the system responded. The dock wouldn't even unhide. I couldn't force quit anything. So, I shut down the system using the button on the Mac. When I tried to start the Mac, I got to the login screen, but it had a pinstripe and then froze on the screen with the Apple, but no login screen. I tried booting with the shift key. Same. Then, I tried booting from the internal back-up drive and a got a pinstriped screen with a question marked folder, then the same freeze. The same happened when I attached a firewire boot drive and tried to boot holding cmd-opt-shift-del. Same result. Any ideas? Thanks.

In my original post I said that, after the hard freeze, I restarted my Mac and got to the login screen. I did NOT get to the login. I meant to say that I got to the grey screen with the Apple logo. I don't know if that makes any difference in diagnosing the problem. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
EDIT: Also, when I tried to zap the PRAM, the system never chimed. As I said, the screen stayed black the whole time and I held the keys for more than two minutes, which is way longer than it should take based on my experience from back in the 1990's. I don't remember having to do it since I switched to Mac o/s X.

  • GDM login screen.

Hi, is there anyway to change the login screen  for gnome? i saw some login themes at gnome-art i would like to try. there doesn't seem to be any easy way to add them
i can change the gdm wallpaper with some cumbersome shell script nonsense, but not the overall theme.
    i am using
    gnome 2.30.2-1
    gdm  2.30.5-1

If you don't feel like installing an app for this, it's actually quite simple.
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gno … g_gdm_2.28
I use Method 1.   Paste the first command in a terminal, log out and change the theme, log in and paste the second command in the terminal.

  • IMac freezes after startup; locks at Login screen

    Hi,
I have changed the system date to an ealier date - a day earlier. After a few moments, my computer froze. Restarted my computer but it still freezes at login screen - keyboard doesn't work. The system works on safemode though, but normal startup doesn't work at all. No HW was added or removed except for the external USB drive. I also have tried the following items to no avail:
    1) PMU Reset
    2) Changed date/time to normal in safemode and installer-disk startup.
    3) Disk/folders permissions tests were OK. Terminal disk check was OK.
    4) Removed my internet connection and all external disks.
    5) Created another user-admin account.
Please help me here. I'm backing up my data files right now and would reinstall my OS later as a last resort.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
When I start windows, after Windows 7 start logo, I get a black screen for about 20-40
seconds, then a black screen with cursor for around 1 and a half minute and then I get the login screen, thats around after 3minutes.
I am facing this problem for quite some time now, I also did a clean windows installation

I open windows in safe mode, I get the Black screen there too but for like 35-45 seconds.
I also ran Dell PC Checkup, everything is fine.
I'd be really grateful if someone helps me find out what exactly is wrong with my laptop
and how can I get rid of this black screen, thanks!

    Hi,

I don't see 2012 R2 listed but you'll surely want the proliant support pack installed.

    3. Delete the only file in that folder
    4. Open folder C:\Users/<user name>/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/iTunes
