After I burn a dvd it won't play in other players?

After I burn a dvd on my Mac, why won't it play in other players?

first, you might have better luck in the correct forum. this is for Mac Pro's
here's the one you want
https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/macbook_pro
Do you want to burn a data DVD or a Movie DVD? If it's the 2nd one, then get iDVD or another movie dvd making application. Most computers don't have that capability
"naturally", you have to go out and get something that'll let you do that

  • Burned dvd-r won't play in external players

I just upgraded from an iMac G5 to a Power Mac. I was using DVDSP on my iMac and never had any problems burning. I recently burned a small project from DVDSP onto the same exact DVD-R media that I've always used (Memorex) and went to play it on the same exact external DVD player that I've always used (Toshiba), and the DVD wouldn't play. I also tested it out on my friend's sony dvd player, and it also wouldn't play. It plays fine on my computer. I used the same exact settings that I did on my iMac (field order:bottom; two pass VBR; max bit rate of 8.2; "Best"). Out of curiosity, I also tried burning a dvd from iDVD, and that also wouldn't play on the external players. I then tried burning an audio CD from iTunes (again, using the same exact settings and same exact media and external CD player), and the CD wouldn't play, except on my computer. I even tried burning the CD at a lower speed (8x), but that made no difference.
I took it into the Apple store, and they replaced the optical drive. However, as I suspected, that did not solve the problem at all. So here I am having just "upgraded" to a Power Mac from a perfectly good iMac, and I have lost all functionality of these programs. I believe it is an issue with Tiger, since I did not have Tiger on my iMac. I did download the Pro Application Support 3.0 when I first got the power mac, which I thought was supposed to solve problems that people were having under Tiger.
I have also read people's entries here which suggest using Toast to burn with. Honestly, I don't see that as a solution, unless Apple starts including it with their systems. These programs (DVDSP, iDVD, iTunes) all have their own burn functions which are supposed to work. And they did work on my iMac, without fail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I used the same exact settings that I did on my iMac (field order:bottom; two pass VBR; max bit rate of 8.2; "Best").
It sounds like you have some other issues going on since nothing is working properly it sounds like, usually first thing to check is that bit Rate which is high, but it sounds like nothing is working
Have you tried reparining permissions after the updates? Have you tried making a new user/account and see if that works? Which version of Tiger? Is this a new Power Mac or an older one (in other words is somehow the burner not rated for the media you are using? That one is a stretch....) How about RAM, any after market RAM (like buy a Mac get 512 Meg upgrade) sometimes that RAM is buggy and can cause issues, though never heard of this happening

  • My made DVD's won't play on bluray players

    Hello Guys
I have made some DVD's and they play fine on DVD players and Mac computers but won't play properly on a PC and won't play at all in a Bluray player.
    My workflow:
    SD Footage captured into FCP
Edited with correct sequence settings (matching the clips)
Exported using quicktime, current settings, self made movie
    Open quicktime movie with compressor
Drag on DVD 90 mins best and submit
Drop the two compressed files into DVDSP
Make a menu and burn to disc using default settings
    Verbatim -R Disc
The disc works beautifully on all DVD players and mac computers but it stutters and freezes on a PC (windows media player) and in a bluray player it just says 'no disc'
Any ideas why they won't work on the PC and in the bluray player?
    Any help would be fab?
    Cheers,
    Mich

    Hey
So I have been scouring these forums for similar problems and trying the suggestions and I have the answer woohoo, it was on this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3096117?start=0&tstart=0
When I was burning the disc it was saying ' a video_ts directory already exists and I was hitting reuse instead of delete and I hadn't assigned the build to the project folder it was set to default which meant it was saved in library/cache. So I deleted the stuff in the video_ts folder in cache and then went to burn the disc again, I saved the files to the project folder and I hit delete instead of reuse when the pop up box came up and now the DVD is playing in the bluray machine....Problem Solved.
I don't understand why this makes a difference and why the disc played on DVD and mac and not bluray before but by doing this it now works on everything YEY

  • Premiere Elements 9 DVD's won't play in Sony players

This problem spans "Pre 3, Pre7, and Pre9" where the DVD's made on any of these versions will NOT play in any of the three Sony DVD players we have. I upgraded from ver 3 to ver 9 (trying 7 on the way) to solve this problem but NO luck. Adobe tech. sent me to this forum to find the answer but no luck, here's what I've got.
The video I'm trying to burn was captured by "Pre 3" from my digital 8 camera of my grandson (home movie)
Tried the DVD's in our Sony's with no luck but the DVD will play in our Panasonic and on all of our computers.
Updated the firmware in one of the two DVD burners in my computer to see if that made a difference . . .NO. . . (burned a DVD with 3,7,9 ver. on two different burners, no luck
Loaded the same video into Roxio 8 and did a "SIMPLE" burn to a DVD and it will Play in anything i put it in.
I've got 13 grandchildren and a lot of digital 8 movies of them I want to share through DVD's but Premiere Elements is putting the stops to that. The only way I see to solve the problem is to do all my burning with Roxio and not use the DVD burning portion of Premiere
    Can anyone HELP?

In your workflow, the variable seems to be the physical Burn. PrE creates 100% DVD-compliant files in the VIDEO_TS folder, and that is shown by using Nero (or Roxio, or ImgBurn). Same files - good discs.
For me, one of the biggest weakness in the total DVD (or BD) authoring process with PrE is its choice of burn speed, and no ability to alter that down. The thinking, at least as I interpret it, is that getting the process done as quickly, as is possible, is a boon to the user. I feel that it is not. For the few moments that are saved in the Burning process, if one has to re-do just one disc, that is lost. The biggest time consumer is the Transcoding step, and not the physical Burning.
I happen to use another Adobe program, Encore, which does allow me to adjust the Burn speed. If I did not, I would always use ImgBurn, as it allows that speed change, plus it writes pure files. From some descriptions, Nero and Roxio both alter things slightly. Usually, that will make no difference, but many have had issues. One area, where these issues can arise, is when one tries to Import the resultant VOB's into a program, like PrE, or PrPro, is that they do not Import perfectly all of the time. That is because they are no longer 100% DVD-compliant, though the files fed to it, probably are. I cannot give specifics of where the changes are made, as I do not know either program, let alone their inner workings. Maybe others can provide useful details here.
Good luck, and I hope that the use of another Burning utility will get you 100% playable discs, but just remember that no DVD player is certified to play ANY burned disc - only commercially replicated disc, which are produced by pressing with glass masters - totally different, than Burning.

  • CDs I burn on my Mac won't play on other CD players

When I burn a CD on my mac it plays back fine on the computer but when I try to play it back on any external player there is no sound. All the files were in aiff format before I burnt them. Other Mac owners tell me they have no problem playing theirs on other players. What am I doing wrong?

I found out what my problem was. I was burning tunes that I imported from old records through "Final Vinyl", directly by putting the music files into the trash, rather than through iTunes. Even though the files are in aiff format as well, they will then be burnt in a data format which is not readable in regular CD players. when I burned them through iTunes all was well.

  • DVD burned from img won't play in other players

In order to back up an old DVD I had to protect it from damage, I ripped it with handbrake and encoded it as a diskimage via iDVD. As the movie was 1.5 hours in length I used the professional setting under project info. After approximately 12 hours of encoding the disk image finished. I can open the disk image with DVD player on the mac and it performs perfectly. I used the disk utility to burn the disk image to a Memorex DVD+R without incident. This morning I tried the burned DVD in my xbox360 which read it as a mixed media disk and would not play it. Next I tried in my sony blu ray player which read it as a photo disk with no photos on the XMB.
What do I need to do to have the burned DVD work properly? Are the DVD+Rs bad or is it something with the encoding? Thanks in advance for your help. I am a pretty big novice to iDVD and the whole process.

To create an image file, launch Disk Utility and select File: New: Disk Image From Folder. In the window that appears, navigate to the desired folder (the DVD) and then click on Image. Give the image file a name, and click on Save when prompted. That’s it.

  • IDVD authored DVDs that won't play in domestic players

For what it's worth with all the traffic here about discs not playing, here's my experience. Hope it helps. Although the following is a wee bit ranty, apologies.
Having successfully authored many DVDs in Panther with iDVD 2, since completely upgrading (not migrating) to a new machine with freshly installed Tiger and iDVD 5.0.1 I cannot successfully burn DVDs from either iDVD or iDVD .imgs from Disc Utility that will play in anything but my trusty 3 year-old Pioneer 355 or Apple DVD player. This is using the same media (Verbatim) as I have always used.
DVD players take a while to read the disc, then show the main menu (even if the DVD is autoplay). On selecting an asset to play, the player freezes. In fact one Panasonic player I have crashes. I have to power it down and up to get the disc out.
On authoring the same assets with the same structure using the same Verbatim media in DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3 I have complete success.
This to me goes to show that my Superdrive is almost certainly not an issue.
Rather than troubleshoot iDVD further I have decided not to use it at all until I have iDVD 6. I cannot afford to waste more time and money on software (and possibly the way software talks to hardware) that plainly does not work fresh out of the box.
Why do I use iDVD when I have DVD SP? It's hassle-free, fast, and does no less and no more than I need. Until now.

Sounds a lot like what I went through. Have you modified the theme (such as added a custom background image)? See my earlier post at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1689970#1689970 for a complete description of this bug.

  • After I burn my DVD Video comes up instead of Menu

After I burn my DVD Video comes up instead of Menu.  How do I get rid of this?

Go into the Map mode of your iDVD project and make sure there is nothing listed in the Auto Play bin at the left.
If there is drag it out and try again.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • DVD Player won't play some DVDs

My DVD Player won't play certain DVDs. Presumably all commercial DVDs should be playable in the software. Fox discs are a problem. I can get Player to turn on, but after the menu, the screen flashes a reading error, from which it could not recover. Yesterday I tried to play a Paramount disc, and nothing happened. The computer didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the tray. A Wolfe Video wouldn't read at first (I got a dialogue box that the disc was blank) but I put it in again and that time it played.
Also, on a side note, I would like future editions of DVD Player to add the feature of allowing the viewer the ability to go backwards a frame at a time, as well as forwards.

    Hi, Doug.
This is starting to sound like a different problem. Your original report seemed to apply only to specific DVDs. Now it's with all DVDs. Before we get into how to reinstall DVD player, let's try a few other things that are more likely troublemakers with DVD Player.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. Reset DVD Player. Peform all of the following steps before attempting to launch DVD Player again:2.1. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
2.2. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders on your account:• Home > Library > Application Support.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings. If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the Owner and Access pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the folders' Get Info windows.
2.3. Trash the contents of your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.3. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, then immediately check the ends of these Console logs for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    4. Note that none of the above rules out the possibility that your optical drive has become defective.4.1. Can you burn DVDs, e.g. even data DVDs from Finder?
4.2. See if the freeware VLC Media Player (nee VideoLan Client) can play the DVDs.Good luck!

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

    Hi
There are several things that do this:
    - Brand of DVD used
    - Type of DVD used
    - BURN SPEED
    - Material used
    - Free space on Start-Up Hard Disk
    I use:
Verbatim, SL-DVD-R, x2 max x4 Burn Speed and never less than 25Gb free space on Macintosh HD
    Material:
    - Video Codec: StreamingDV, AIC or HDV
    - Photo file format: .jpg - NEVER .bmp or other - all converted to this
    - AUDIO file format: - .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz (as on Audio-CDs) - NO .mp3 or DIRECT FROM iTUNES ! - all converted to .aiff
Then I've near to Zero problems.

  • Burned DVD-R won't play in domestic DVD player

Why a DVD-R i burn won't play in a common domestic DVD player, even the most recent and good quality ones ? Is there something else i should do before burning ?

How did you burn it? If you dragged the files to the dvd in finder and then hit burn it won't play in a dvd player, but if you used iDVD it should work.

  • After I burn a DVD I am unable to read it again

I have archived some files onto DVD's and after the disk is burned the icon comes up on the desktop. If I double click on the icon the disk seems to open and show it contains all the data I burned to it. However once I eject the DVD, when I reinsert it my computer just spits it back out after about 30 seconds. Did I burn the DVD incorrectly? Why am I unable to remount my DVD's after I have burned them?

"What brand of DVD media did you use?"
Memorex. Is there a superior media I should try?
Almost any brand is superior to Memorex when it comes to DVD and CD recordables. I'd recommend TDK, Maxell, Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden.
That being said, this issue has been reported by many users and I don't recall anyone coming up with a definite solution for it. I think the issue is more prevalent with the DVR-106 drives, but obviously users with other models are experiencing it as well.
