    Hello Tara-louise,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Pro was booting just to the gray screen with the Apple logo on it.  I recommend following the steps in the article below for the issue you are experiencing:

  • Why does my iPod nano shut off randomly? I just bought it. After about a minute of music, it shuts off.

I just bought my wife an iPod nano. Went through the set up and then updated the iPod through iTunes. Now, after about a minute of music (with two different sets of headphones) it simply shuts off. As if it's in power convseration mode. But I can't find a setting to prevent this. Very frustrating for having JUST bought this.

If you have not already, do a Reset following this procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
A Reset just restarts the iPod.  It is not erased.
If that does not help, the most likely fix for your problem would be a Restore.  This WILL erase the iPod, re-install its softare, and set it to default settings.  To do it, select the iPod in the iTune sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  The button for doing a Restore is there.
For anything that is currently on your computer (such as songs and pictures) that were synced to the iPod, you can just re-sync them.  That should not take too long, even if you do it manually (without using automatic syncing).
For anything that is only on the iPod (not on your computer), they will be lost if you do a Restore.  But that was a known risk.  After all, your iPod could be lost or stolen (or seriously damaged), and those items would be lost.
If those items are songs you purchased from the iTunes Store, you can re-download them (at no cost) on the iTunes Store Purchased screen.
or even be recognized by my computer when it is like this. It just sits there.
If you are having a problem getting the iPod to be recognized by iTunes, which is necessary to do a Restore, try this...  Set the iPod to Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Then, see if iTunes will recognize it when connected.  Also, if it is recognized more reliably in Disk Mode, before doing a Restore, you can try using a third-party method or utility to transfer song files off the iPod to your computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.

You are running windows and you want to start the above application before the windows desktop starts - correct?
As stated I am rather certain that is impossible. GUIs can't show up until the desktop exists.

  • I am trying to load adobe flashplayer after 50% loading it tells me to shut down Firefox . Hw do I do this? shut down Firefox. How do i

How do I close down Firefox?

There are two different versions of Flash, the '''''ActiveX''''' version for IE and the '''Plugin''' version used by most other browsers.
1.Download the Flash Plugin version setup file from here: <br />
    [http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe Adobe Flash - Plugin version]. <br />
Save it to your Desktop.<br />
    2. Close Firefox using File > Exit <br />
then check the Task Manager > Processes tab to make sure '''firefox.exe''' is closed, <br />
    {XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vista: Shift+Ctrl+ESC = Processes tab}
    3. Then run the Flash setup file from your Desktop.
    4. Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
    * On Vista and Windows 7 you may need to run the plugin installer as Administrator by starting the installer via the right-click context menu if you do not get an UAC prompt to ask for permission to continue (i.e nothing seems to happen). <br />

  • Slowness only after switching networks until airport is shut off and then..

Hello. I am asking this for a friend. I did do a search but did not come up with much. When she opens Safari (or Firefox) it is extremely slow at loading pages. If she shuts off the airport utility, waits a second then turns airport back on it seems to work just fine. Seems to happen after she moves to another network, but all of the networks that she moves to are her "known" networks.
    Any Ideas???
    Thanks everyone.
    Steve

    Hi
Did the person at the Apple store test her Airport card?
OpenDNS is an organization providing server codes that work in addition to those supplied by the IP. This helps speed up the flow of information to the computer. Also, provide protection against fraudulent sites (phishing).
Creating a new location rather than using the "automatic" function makes Safari more specific when accessing web sites. By contrast, the Automatic function searches for available networks, so theoretically there is an inherent lag in the process. I have a specific location set up for my Home. When traveling I switch back to Automatic.
You create a separate location by clicking on the Location drop down menu in the System Preferences>Network panel and selecting "edit". When the location panel appears, click on the + button to add a new one to the list. The gear icon on the panel allows you to duplicate or rename a location.
Here's how to enter the DNS codes in Leopard:
In the Network panel select your connection, then select "advanced". In the DNS panel add these codes:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
In the Network panel, if Airport is not at the top of the list, click on the "gear icon" at the left bottom. Select "set service order". When the help box opens drag Airport to the top of the list. Select "apply" when complete.
    Restart Safari.

  • Intel Mac Mini from 2006 won't boot up!  Shuts off by itself.

I stuck a copy of Snow Leopard into my computer to upgrade it before realizing that there were certain things I hadn't thought to back up before I did. I tried to exit the install process by selecting the appropriate start up disc and then restarted. It took forever and ultimately just shut down. I turned the computer back on and it kept taking me to the os install screen until eventually it started shutting itself off before I even got there. I finally got the disc out of the mini by holding down the mouse button as it turned on, but I still can't get it to boot up into the usual os. When i turn it on, I get a blank screen, eventually an apple with the round symbol that something's loading and then eventually it shuts off before I get anywhere.
Can someone PLEASE help me? It was a dumb mistake, but I really need to get back into my computer. I reset the PRAM, but that didn't make a difference. Thank you in advance if anyone has any advice.

If you have the 10.6.3 disk you're in luck.
All you do is pop it in the DVD drive, hold down the 'C' key and reboot.
You'll have to reinstall the OS (it'll probably note that a newer version exists, and ask you if you want to overwrite it. Say 'yes'), then after installation is finished immediately do Software Update to get the system up to 10.6.8. This can be lengthy if you do it through the 'Software Update' utility. A shortcut is to download the 'combo' update here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399
Just to be clear: you have to reinstall from the DVD BEFORE you try and download and run that combo update.
Once that's done, you should be good.
As a piece of general advice, never trash a system file and THEN try to update. You update with the file in place. Normally, just hitting 'software update' will do it. If you have a specific file that you think needs replacing, acquire the file first, then move it into place before rebooting.
Finally, never do anything like you did if you haven't got a backup. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to keep a regular clone of your entire internal HD. It would have taken you 5 minutes to boot into a clone and get the file off it that you trashed and saved you a whole load of headache!

  • IPhone 4S- distorted yellow screen, shutting off

    Hi-
I have an iPhone 4S- about 8 months old. Twice in the past few days, the screen has turned yellow and been distoreted. After about 2 seconds, the entire phone shuts off. The phone takes a while to reboot, but it comes back and it is fine.
    Has anyone heard of this?
    Thanks!

    Hi chunkychild,
If you haven't already done so, does restarting or resetting the iPhone help the issue?

  • 2009 Mac Pro 8-core shut off randomly, won't restart. Swapped processor board and HDD's into my other tower. Started fine and worked for about 10 minutes, then same thing. Powered off by itself and won't restart.

Both towers are 2009 models, one is 8-core, the other 4. I figured the problem was with the power supply, so I just stuck the guts from the 8-core into the 4-core. It booted up with no issues at all, didn't require any updates or anything. Firefox even restored my tabs. But after about 5-10 minutes, the machine shut off at random and won't start back up. The DIAG LED lights up one LED yellow when pressed, labelled "5V STBY". Same LED on both boards.
Any ideas? I've got two really expensive paper weights at the moment, and my AppleCare plan expired 3 months ago.

    Dust VAC for dust bunnies
real issue can be thermal paste or lack or needing redone
dust clings to any ram or electronics or inside psu and graphic cards
    motherboards both support dual processor?
thermal sensor readings from Hardware Monitor would be nice
unplugged is not enough to reset the SMC, power on button also, and every cableetc disconnected
    try with one dimm too

  • Macbook won't start up all the way, just gray screen then shuts off...

When I turn my mac book on, it starts up and has the apple logo and the spinning gear thing. then after about 30 seconds or so, it shuts off. I tried the install disc and held c, then tried to repair my hard drive thing, but it said it had an error like this: "the underlying task reported failure on exit" and then under that it said something about 1 volume like not working or something and that was in red. anyone know anything else I could do to fix it? thanks

    Hey man,
I regret to inform you that I am having the same issue. And I have found that EVERYTHING I have tried has not worked.
You can try all the things that are on the troubleshooting forum right here in the support section. But it didn't work for me. I even tried some further stuff.....to no avail. Some poeple have told me that I need to take out the RAM and try switching that. Haven't gotten to try that yet.
But from what I can tell right now, I'm gonna end up having to loose all my data and send it in and get a new computer. Which I like the sound of "a new computer"....but DON"T like the sound of "lost data." I'm a writer and musician...and I've archived my files on that of my music and writing....alas, the mourning process has begun.
But I hope that you end up in better shape! And do let me know if you find anything that works!!

  • MSI GX-740 while gaming suddenly shuts off!

I went out for a short break to have a smoke and when I came back, my laptop had shut off. I turned it back on, it started to load Windows 7 and it shut off again. Now it won't turn on. I unplugged everything and flipped over the laptop to eject the battery. It didn't seem to hot as the games I'm playing were made in 2003, so not so graphically intensive. I don't know what the problem could possibley be. The battery had been sitting out for 20 minutes or so so I decided to pop it back in and give it another go. Still nothing. Still won't power on. I purchased it about seven months ago brand new. I'm never really had a problem with it until now. Though, sometimes when playing YouTube videos the videos would turn all green and wouldn't return to normal until later? Graphic related problem or CPU related possibly? Please help and I will feed you as much information I can. Thank you everyone and have a good day.

There's very little you can do, and given that it's just 7 months old I would say requesting an RMA is your best bet. Take off all your data before sending the laptop back (take out the hard drive and connect to another PC).
You can try an >>EC reset<<, change the battery for a new one, swap out the RAM and hard drive, but other than that there's not much a standard user can do, and opening up the laptop could result in you voiding the warranty.

  • My iPad just shut off

So I had just bought a new pair of headphones, I made sure that the quailty was nice and all. And I plugged them inton my iPad and after the 4 songs playing it just shut off. I tried turning it back on but it wont. The light buld isn't dead because it still would have been playing music. and I tried plugging it in and it won't work

Try this and see if this lets it restart.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Computer will start up at white Apple screen then shut off.

I have an older Mac Book Pro that I start up and hear the chime and white Apple screen. There is a small turning dial below the Apple showing it is "thinking" before start up. After a minute or so it just shuts off. I have over 5000 pictures and 4000 songs that I havent backed up.
    HELP!

If it is over 4 years old, replace the PRAM battery.
If it is under 4 years old, try the data recovery techniques on my FAQ*:

  • Shutting off java after faulty java code runs in WinXP

I would like to know how to shut java off after a webpage with faulty java code is loaded. Ever since the version of Java that introduced "jsched" into the mix, I've had problems with Java on every computer and every install of windows I've had and worked with. If a webpage has faulty code in it, instead of crashing Firefox/Mozilla like the older versions did (in which I could simply reload the browser after it crashes), it makes Firefox inoperable (disabling most of the menu items and making the mouse scroller not work), and continues to run even after Firefox is no longer running. To make matters worse, Java was programmed in such a way that makes it a process that cannot be seen in the task manager. Java's ability to hide its running process quite frankly makes me nervous.
I'm thankful that the latest version fixed a lot of bugs--the version before this would give me a blue screen of death every time I tried to access the control panel.
I would like to know how to turn off java once it's running. The only documentation I have been able to find was in relation to a shell in Linux which uses commands that don't work in Windows.

How do I shut off Java once it is loaded when I'm on a page that doens't have any errors? If I go to a page that requires java, and Java gets loaded, it doesn't automatically quit when I go to another page. Why does Java need to continue running when it's no longer being used? Why should I have to quit and reload Firefox in order to quit Java?
It would be nice if there was something in Java to shut itself off when it encounters an error instead of requiring a windows restart in order to quit Java since it isn't a separate process, and also something that shuts off Java when there is no longer a webpage in memory that requires Java.
