After inserting DVD, restarts to original screen

Hi all,
I'm a new poster... so any help would be appreciated. I insert my Leopard DVD and double click the Setup icon to a screen asking me to restart to begin the setup assistant, in which case i do and type in my password. It restarts normally back to where I left off in Tiger. Any thoughts? Sorry if this topic was already discussed, i can't seem to find it.
Thanks
MC

If you have a retail Leopard DVD, you can insert the Disk and then see if you can choose it as a Startup Disk in your preferences. If it doesn't show up then the disk could be bad.
Are you using a retail DVD, or a drop-in DVD that came with your Mac?

  • MacBook Shuts Down Unexpectedly After Inserting DVD

I was about to watch my new TRANSFORMERS movie on DVD and after about 3 minutes of watching, my MacBook just shuts down immediately, so i tried the second time. This time, i was plugging in my ipod to recharge while the movie was paused. Once i got back and started to play my movie, the whole screen turned black (but the movie was still playing), and it shuts down again. Can anyone please tell me why??

I have JUST started experiencing the same problems where I'll insert a DVD and the computer may or +may not+ shut down unexpectedly in the middle of playing. When I try to restart with the dvd still in the laptop, it may also shut down again before I can successfully log in. This has also happened with several different DVDs over the last 4 days, so I don't think it's tied to the DVD itself...
I also have the computer on, plugged in, with the battery taken out, and with an external harddrive and mouse plugged in. Are the peripherals making it worse?
I bought my macbook in the US with a 3 year applecare plan and am now living in Beijing, China. I would like to be able to get this issue fixed, but don't know where to begin with calling a place in China. What is the protocol?

After a second thought, you'd have to move the home partition as well, as the extended partition counts too. I'd start with an arch live cd, cfdisk, delete swap, make extended, 2 logical drives, format the partition, backup, move home's content. then delete home, create new primary, install windows, write grub again, put the new partitions into fstab and tell grub where to find windows.
EDIT: After a third thought, combining home and root might be easier: Just copy home's content to your root partition (if ther is enough room ...), unmount home, copy the stuff to /home and delete the home partition from fstab. Then delete the old home partition.
Copying the home's contents to the root partition was what I had in mind. I'm trying to figure out how I would go about doing that though.  If I copy the /home to the root partition from the old home partition - will it automatically pick it up if I delete the fstab entry. Also will it be possible to expand my /root partition after that to take up the space the home partion use to own?

I have a problem in iPhone . When you receive a contact and press the key at the top to cancel the contact screen stopped working .ataml times after the last restart device

Since restarting did not help, reset your iPhone, see: Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If that still does not solve it, check, if the contact you are trying to add is problematic. Try to save a different contact. Does that work?
If not, reinstall the Contacts app. This is only possible by restoring your iPhone, unfortunately.
See: Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

Snow Leopard is a Mac OS X version. You say that it's the version you have in your Mac (10.6.8). Do a back up of your files, format the hard drive (using Disk Utility) and reinstall again

I had a similar problem, does the phone show anything on the screen, for example "update failed, connect to computer" if it does, try opening "Sony PC Companion 2.1" click start on "support zone" then click "phone/ tablet software update" a message will pop up, press repair my phone / tablet, select your phone in the list, then follow what it says, try doing this even if the phone shows nothing, you will lose everything, all data will be gone if you follow my steps

  • Compressor 4 insert DVD dialog box does not come up after rendering

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong when after rendering a DVD project, the process looks like its finished rendering but the insert DVD dialog box never comes up.
Very frustrating, but probably something dumb...
    Thanks

Everything looks good in the Batch Window.
I'm guessing permissions or preferences, assuming it's not hardware.
Run Compressor Repair to flush things out…make sure the Trash Preferences box is checked.
Run Disk Utlity, select your boot drive and Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't do it, in Job Action, change output device to Hard Drive and se whether it will make a disk image.
    Good luck.

My Iphone 4 suddenly blackout and restart by itself. After that it reach the restore screen. Tried to do restore but it come out Error (9). Anyone can help?
I tried to restore in normal mode and DFU mode, both of it still give me error (9).
I tried using other cable and computer but it still the same.
Anyone out there having the same issue that can share?
Is this a hardware or software issue? My warranty already over and have to solve this problem by myself.
    Please help.

Did you check your security software settings?
Error 9: This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off the USB bus and communication stops. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • Imac 24" dvd-drive doesnt show inserted DVDs randomly, only after reboot (?

    hi
i am very aware of this problem as my powerbook G4 had the same issue,
although its not a big issue i am worring about.
when i insert a DVD sometimes, lets say a commercial Movie DVD, an older burned DVD from 2002 or 2005 or even 2006, my brand new imac 24" doesnt recognize the inserted DVD randomly, not every day, but on some days........
when i start harddisctoolkit, it doesnt show the dvd, too.
the drive spins a bit, then stays calm.
i use to reboot then, and surprise, its always there!
    what is it please?
    thanks

from time to time i have startup problems with my mac and some people told me it is a major problem and i should call the support. is this another sign that my mac has a problem?
    Thanks for your help

I have that same combo working here. Other than the Sony not reading older 4X DVD "Sony" discs, and saying they are CDs, it operates perfectly. If both drives are set to cable select like hatter said, all should be well.

  • Ibook won't boot, after having DVD stuck

I had a problem ejecting a DVD, as it had crashed. So after restarting, the grey screen appears with the apple, and the laptop did not come back on. I managed to eject the CD by holding the trackpad button, but OS X is still not loading.
    Any idea's would be appreciated!

You may have directory corruption, or you may be seeing a hard drive failure occurring.
Apple's Disk Utility, found in your Utility folder, can remedy basic problems in the directory. If a directory problem goes unchecked, it can snowball into a larger problem, which is never pleasant.
To repair directory problems, insert the Installer Tiger DVD into the computer. After it loads, restart the system. When the screen goes dark, hold down the C key. Once the grey Apple screen appears you can let go of the C key.
When the DVD is fully loaded, select Disk Utility in the Utility menu. A window will open showing your HD on the left. Single click on your HD, then select "repair disk" in the lower right of the screen (First Aid Panel). If errors appear during the "repair", rerun the utility until you get a clean pass. Then quit the Utility and Installer, letting the computer restart.
If errors exist and Disk Utility cannot fix them, then a trip to the Apple Store would be next. The alternative would be using a more sophisticated program such as Disk Warrior.

  • After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely

After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely." What do I do now? This is an iMac and I'm running 10.6.8.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

  • Import Photos from DVD  - Reference to Original DVD Title?

i installed the trial version of Lightroom 2.0 and tested it out putting a DVD in.. it imported all the thumbnails fine... but when you take out the DVD after its done cataloging all the icons, the program doesn't tell you the name of the DVD that the photo folders belong to... it just gives a message referring to the fact that the "image is not available" when you click on an icon... which makes sense of course because the DVD isn't there, but... there's no indication like "please insert DVD labeled "PhotoDVD090" or whatever ...
I looked through the preferences to see if there was a way of turning on a feature that would be able to prompt me to put in the correct DVD when a particular thumbnail was clicked... this, I believe would be an invaluable and time saving tool for those of us with tons of off-line media.

Thanks for the reply.. I appreciate it much. I know what you're trying to say but I have searched for a program that will import photos from a DVD, remember it by serial number (of the physical media), allow you to type in a DVD name or use the one originally provided when you burned the DVD, then store all thumbnails on the computer, remove the DVD, still have the thumbnails on the computer permanently and when you click a thumbnail, if the appropriate DVD is not in the drive it will prompt you for the title of the DVD..
simple simple simple... The fact that Lightroom doesn't have such a feature has prompted me to remove it completely from my system..
the fact that ACDsee Photo Manager 10 DOES have this feature, and costs a mere $29.99 has prompted me to get it instead.. it works like a dream... you can browse all your images, search by any criteria imaginable.. and then when you find the image you wish to work on.. a double click will pop of a box saying please insert such and such a dvd... you put in the DVD then click edit and up it pops in photoshop (or whatever other editing software you specify).. magic... Lightroom really needs to address this lacking option.
