After Install Problems

Installed SL last night. The install went fine until the very end. A dialog popped up that said "To open notifications, you need to install Rosetta." Then the same dialog kept popping up until I had about 20 instances of it. I quit each one. Now the OS is working but it's displaying some weird behavior:
* Dashboard: I hit F-12 and it all displays but sometimes none of the apps are enabled;
* Date, Time, Arport and Other Icons: They display at bootup and immediately disappear never to be seen again;
* Shift-Apple-4: The screen capture command no longer works;
* LogMeIn Icon: I have a little icon on the top of the screen for the logmein app. It bounces left and right even though I have quit the program.
All I've done thus far is repair permissions which had no effect. Ideas? Thanks.
jor

There are some simple troubleshooting steps you can take.
Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Problems after installing Bootcamp 3.1

    Hello everyone.
I had installed Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate in a Bootcamp partition. I used the SL disk to install Bootcamp 3.0 which, with some audio related problems which were solved by changing the drivers, worked well. All sounds played, the graphics card behaved normally, etc.
Recently I got the alert of a Bootcamp update, 3.1, as we all know. After installing it without a hitch, small problems began to pop up.
First, no Windows startup sound played anymore, and there has been no way for me to make it work again. I've gone to countless forums and gone through an endless barrage of suggestions, including a complete formatting, but it always leads back to the same, isolated problem: Startup sound plays in BT 3.0, doesn't play anymore in BT 3.1.
But more importantly, after pretty much giving up with the startup sound issue (it's only that particular sound, in the login screen, so I decided to ignore it's absence), more problems appeared. Initially, all system tray icons appeared swiftly. Now the main ones, Sound, Wireless Connection and Battery appear fast, but the rest take at least 5 minutes to appear. This is again something that wasn't present in Bootcamp 3.0.
Yet another problem, this one I consider is the most important, and the real reason for this post of mine, is that Bootcamp 3.1 brought a serious driver problem with my Macbook Pro's 9400M video card. Doing the most stupid of tasks such as opening the video card's control panel from the Desktop gives me the following error:
"The NVIDIA Display Panel extension cannot be created.
    Possible reasons include:
Version mismatch. Reinstalling the drivers may solve this problem."
Now, the Device Manager shows no errors in hardware-driver smoothness in any aspect, yet it's clear that the driver that BT 3.1 installs for the video card was either faulty or old, or for another OS. I went to NVIDIA's site to manually get the driver, but it turns out that they offer no NVIDIA GeForce 9400M drivers for Windows 7 64 bit. So I wonder, how come it worked before? Because in Bootcamp 3.0 the Control Panel would open flawlessly.
So this is serious. Gaming has also turned into a nightmare, since the problem with the video card negatively affects the smoothness of the gameplay. Apple, things weren't working 100% with BT 3.0, but BT 3.1 far from making things better just got everything worse.
I ask everyone here if there is a known solution. Should I install the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M drivers for Windows 7 32 bit? Why doesn't the driver installed by BT 3.1 function as it should when it's supposed to be covering Windows 7 compatibility? Why are the barrage of audio errors present in BT 3.1 and not in BT 3.0? What happened with my startup sound?
Apple, you're offering the possibility for your users to user Windows for compatibility and gaming. You market your Macs are fully compatible and flawless even running Windows. Don't come about saying this is not your problem, it is. It's your drivers, you develop them, you give them to us. If they don't work, you must do something about it. If not, then stop offering the Bootcamp service completely. If you're gonna do something, do it well.

  • Problem with Itunes and NAS after installing latest version of Itunes

After installing the latest version of Itunes on my new PC (Windows 7 Ultimate) I have problems seeing the music off the Itunes server on my NAS.
I see the name of the NAS under tab SHARED (GEDEELD in dutch), but when I click on it,  Itunes is making connection with the NAS but I see the music for less then a second.
Then the display goes back to the tab LIBRARY.
I've searched the web for this problem, checked on my firewall,... nothing to find.  On another windows 7 PC, it is still working fine but this is an older version of Itunes.
So what can be the problem ?

No, I had not uninstalled it, I didn't realize I had ever installed it.  I don't use it at all, never have.  I uninstalled the MobileMe Control Panel then restarted my computer for good measure, and that appears to have resolved the issue!  Thanks very much for your help!

  • Problem with Rescue and Recovery after installing Norton Internet Security 2010

    Hi all.
It's my first time in this forum.
I have a problem, with Rescue and Recovery, after installing Norton Internet Security 2010 on my T43.
    The message I get it:
"Rescue and Recovery is unable to back up the file 'C:\Documents and settings\all Users\Application Data\ Norton\ 00000082\00000109\000003c1\cltMLS1.bat' Because the file is either corrupted or being used by another application. Please close any application that could be using the file.
I tried to close the Norton but I couldn't find how.
    Tanks
    Doron71

Hi and welcome to the forum,
the reason for this situation is, that the antivir files are protected from being modified.
This is the reason, why this file cannot be backed up. I assume, that you would get much more such messages, as there are surelly multiple files files, that are protected like this.
So the solution is to block folders from being archived. Please start RnR application and in the configuration set this folder as the excluded one.
This will skip the backup of this file and will fix your situation.
Please let me know, if you have covered this.
    Cheers

  • A lot of problems after installing Windows XP using Boot Camp on a Mac Book

I have been having a lot of problems after installing Windows XP Home Edition (2002).
For one, after installing Windows using Boot Camp with Mac OS X 10.5.1, I opened Windows on my Mac Book, inserted the Mac OS X Disk 1 as in the instructions and got the message: +"This package requires a newer version of the Windows installer. Do you want to update the version of the Windows Installer on your system?"+ When I clicked Yes (I had NO idea what it meant at the time), I got the message: "The required resource 'UPDATE' is missing" and the Installer quit.
How do I fix this problem?
Another problem I have is that there is no sound on the Windows XP, yet it works perfectly on Mac OS X. Is there any way to fix this problem?
A third problem I have is that I can't wirelessly connect to the internet using Window XP, yet I can on Mac OS X. I have no idea on how to fix this, and it's really messing with me. D:<
D: There are way too many problems, and I have a feeling there will be a lot more later on. Help....

  • Problem starting up G5 2.5 after installing 10.4.7

i have a G5 dual 2.5 (single core) that, until yesterday was running 10.3.9 and final cut pro 4.5 and working just fine.
yesterday i upgraded to 10.4.7 and fcp 5.1.1 (mid-project, which was soooooooo stupid, but that's another thing,) and now, whenever i restart or shut down and restart the computer, i just get the "chung" and nothing boots up. no desktop, no grey screen with spinning cursor. nothing. just a black screen. the only way to get it to restart is to shut down again, open up the side and reset the pmu.
i reset the permissions, etc through Onyx. no help.
i called apple and they think it might be a hardware issue and that i should take it in for repair. but repair is at least 10 days away and, like i said, i'm mid project and can't loose it right now. also, hardware related? why now, after installing new system software? wouldn't that be software related?
so, at any rate, now, instead of shutting my machine off at night, i'll just have to leave it on and suck up the juice until i can get it into the shop....
...unless any of you have experienced this and have an idea of what is wrong.
    can anyone help??
    thanks in advance
    carl
if you need more info...hardware configs, etc, let me know.

so i ran hardware test yesterday and my machine failed the logic board test - twice. so bad motherboard?
took it to the apple store in jacksonville, and when they ran the hardware test it passed..everything. they ran it agin and it passed again. but when they reinstalled tiger, same restart and shutdown problem.
they said it could be the ram i installed a year ago...crucial, 2 512 sticks. and when we pulled them out and reinstalled tiger again, the machine seemed to be ok.
so they recommended i buy apple ram at $200 a gig! they said tiger is very sensitive to ram.
i don't understand. i know many ppl who do not use apple ram, and from what one of the genius' told me, the crucial ram i installed is the same apple uses anyway.
i don't want to spend another $200 on new ram to run tiger when the ram i have now runs fine in panther.
but i feel cheated that i have a fast machine, but can't run tiger or final cut studio on it becaue of my ram!?!?!
i don't know what to do at this point.
any thoughts or recommendations? I'm stuck...
oh, also, apple care on the phone failed to tell me that i qualified for on-site help instead of having to drive an hour to the apple store. i wonder if i run hardware test again and it fails, and i write down the error code, i can get apple care to send someone out to check the machine out from top to bottom. i spent over 4 hours at the apple store yesterday and i really don't want to go through that again!

IF RESET DOESN'T WORK, FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.

  • After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

My gmail, which is correctly configured for Mail with gmail SMTP and Google IMAP, works for awhile on Mail, which I leave open while working on other applications. But several times a day I get msg from Google: "We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account" . . . and requiring me to verify my account details, re-enter passwords, confirm security settings (or change them from "disable" to "enable less secure methods" and so on). In Mail I also have tried "taking all accounts online", and re-entering my gmail password inside Mail account settings. These steps successfully re-set comms between gmail and Mail ... for awhile, then it happens again. Enough occurrences over a work day that I just quit Mail and revert to accessing gmail directly. Apple Care advisor and an Apple knowledge base article say that Apple can't deal with this, as gmail is third-party app, and they refer me to gmail, and so far I've found nothing helpful there.
From today I also have several instances of a window saying "Mail has unexpectedly closed" and asking me to Re-open it.
I also use Yahoo mail, which stops working with Mac Mail at the same time as gmail, but I do not receive notices to re-verify from Yahoo.
I recently upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. The Mail problem happened occasionally with Mavericks but is far more frequent with Yosemite.

  • Problems after installing Windows 7 Professional on Thinkpad T61

I have an old T61 that had Windows Vista installed. I wanted to use Windows 7 but didn't want to wipe out what I already had (for various reasons). So I bought a new disk drive and did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. The disk drive is a Western Digital Blue Notebook 1TB drive. After installing the drive in the machine, I followed these instructions to install Windows 7: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74108. I chose to partition the drive into a C: drive (500GB) and a D: drive (431GB). After the install completed, I downloaded all the available Microsoft fixes (this took some time to complete).
For the Device Driver and Application install, I used the ThinkVantage System Update option. The site indicated that Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 with Service Pack 1 or later was required. I downloaded and installed version 4. There were additional Microsoft fixes for version 4, which I downloaded and installed also. Then I downloaded and installed ThinkVantage System Update 5.03. I then executed System Update and selected all the available updates. They all installed, except for Windows 7 Update Module KB2615763 64bit. This update, after failing, gave the option to install manually but when I click on that option I receive a pop up saying: Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247. The title of the pop up says Windows Update Standalone Installer.
I then attempted to install various applications on the machine: FileZilla FTP Client, Google Chrome, Notepad++, PrimoPDF were all installed without problems. When I installed a Cisco VPN Client for 64 bit machines, however, I was knocked off the network. Clicking on the WiFi symbol in the task bar showed that I had only limited connectivity to the network. I tried to do a IPCONFIG /ALL  and neither the WiFi adapter nor the Ethernet LAN adapter showed up in the list. I uninstalled the VPN Client, from the Control Panel, and was immediately able to connect to the network. An IPCONFIG /ALL now showed all the network adapters. I installed/uninstalled the VPN Client several times just to make sure that it was causing the problem of no network connectivity.
I fgured that there might be updated network adapter drivers available to resolve the problem so I attempted both System Update and Windows Update again. System Update showed nothing available, except Windows 7 Update Module KB2615763 64bit. Windows Update had a message saying "Check for updates for your computer" but when I clicked on "Check for updates" it popped up a message saying "Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your machine." I checked and the Windows Update service is running. I stopped and restarted it but received the same message when I tried to check for updates again. I rebooted the machine and tried Windows Update again. Same pop up message.
I tried the "Fix problems with Windows Update" option in the Control Panel but received a message saying - An error occurred while troubleshooting: A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting. The error details say:
    Package ID: WindowsUpdateDiagnostic
    Path: Unknown
    Error Code: 0x8E5E0247
    Source: Engine
I tried some of the other troubleshooting options and they all give similar errors - An error occurred while troubleshooting: A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting.
I then thought it might be a disk drive problem so I tried to do a CHKDSK /F but when the machine reboots the CHKDSK seems to start (there is a message that says it can be interrupted by pressing a key within 10 seconds) then, before the 10 seconds are up, it ends without checking the disk and the machine continues to boot up.
Has anyone seen any of these problems before? Did I miss something? Could this be related to the disk drive? Or missing device drivers? Bios?
Any help with this will be appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

A laptop drive that size is almost certainly an AF drive.  You can check by looking up the model's specs on the vendor's site. You can also use the fsutil command to check the drive's physical sector size and verify that the size isn't getting reported correctly - which is what usually causes the update problem.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018
Expand the "Issue 6 Fsutil.exe tool" entry in that link for more info.  The entire KB may also be helpful.
If my guess is actually the problem you won't have to reinstall Windows 7.  Just update - or roll back  - the driver.  You might first try going to Device Manager, selecting the storage controller, and rolling back to an earlier driver.
If that works, configure ThinkVantage System Update to not show the offending driver, or this will happen again.  If that doesn't do the job, go to Intel's site and find the latest Matrix Storage Manager or Rapid Storage Technology that is specified for your chipset and operating system.  Or just try the latest and if that doesn't work, try earlier ones.
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductL...
Here's a local KB addressing this (presumed) issue:  http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Windows-Update-Fails-After-Installing-New-Hard-...
To repeat, this is a bit of a guess.  It's pretty likely that your storage driver is the culprit.  Either you need one new enough to support the physical size reporting ioctl, or you've been bitten by TVSU "updating" to a buggy driver.  Either way the corrrect driver should fix things.

  • After install of 10.9.2 have problems with rebooting

I have had to reinstall 10.9.2 and won't dare reboot because:
After install of 10.9.2 I reboot and got some kind of error that would not let me get to the logon screen. I'm not sure exactly where the hang up occurs but the output looks something similar to when booting with opt-S.  The only thing I remember are words "osx version not set."  The only way I could get things working again was to do a fresh install.
The second error occured after installing wireless mouse software that required a reboot.  This time I could get to the logon screen but my keyboard no longer worked.  In other words, there was a prompt for username and password but no keypresses were being registered.  Once again the only thing I knew of to do was to reinstall.
Is there anything I can do to be able to tell if there is some latent problem waiting to happen if I try and reboot? Or should I just keep the machine on all the time now?
    Thank you

  • Please a simple problem but I don't know how to solve it. After installing 16 gb of ram all is good but when I turn on the computer it is a window signaling that all is correct. How is possible to delete once and for all that window? Thank you

Please a simple problem but I don't know how to solve it. After installing 16 gb of ram all is good but when I turn on the computer it is a window signaling that all is correct. How is possible to delete once and for all that window? Thank you

Well then maybe you could take a screenshot because the appearance of such a window is news to me.
Also post your OS X version and what model Mac you have. The more detail, the better. Thanks.
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse or trackpad. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

I have a hp envy m6-1105tx and right after installing windows 8.1 my monitor changed completely.
When i have a photo open in photoshop tones, colors luminosity, gamma etc are all wrong. Before i never had problems, when i looked at a photo in photoshop and i will see the photo on a different screen it would be basiclally identical but now the photo in photoshop is much different than the actual photo, and this doesn't apply only to photoshop but to everything. I already try to do the calibration through the control panel but it didn't improve the situation, is there a way to get the screen back to the way it was before?
    Thanks

    Wehodancer, welcome to the forum.
I checked for an updated driver for the video, but there is none for Win 8.1.  Therefore, I suggest installing the original driver for the video to see if it helps.  It may be that it was corrupted during the update process.

  • Strange problems after installing Solaris 10 u6 on 64-bit PC

    Hi all,
I have run into some very strange issues after installing Solaris 10 update 6 on my 64-bit PC (it's almost new). The problems are with graphical applications and desktop environments based on GTK (so it seems, at least).
I have installed Solaris normally, following most of the default options and choosing the "Entire Group" software packages installation. However, after the first login I've seen that:
    1. No user creation process was offered to me and I had to login as root (I find it pretty strange)
    2. After logging in as root into JDK system, my screen went blank for a couple of seconds and then the system threw me back to the login screen.
    3. Logging into the old CDE environment was possible, but launching Firefox from there (using a command line terminal) wasn't. It gave me the following error message:
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: libmlib.so.2: open failed: no such file or directory
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/bin/firefox/firefox-bin: symbol gtk_init: referenced symbol not found.
It's very strange because GTK toolkit and JDK environment are supposed to be the core functionalities provided by Solaris. Does anyone have an idea what's going on?
    My system sum-up:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quand Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz
RAM: 2 Gb of DDR2 SDRAM
Motherboard: MSI MS-7529 (Intel G31 chipset)
    Monitor: AOC LM725
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT
Hard disk: 2 Western Digital HDs (SATA) 320 Gb each,
1 Western Digital external USB HD MyBook Essential 2, 500 Gb
DVD drives: 2 LG DVD drives (SATA)
Network card: Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
I use my system in the following way:
On the first hard disk, I have a one-partition 32-bit Windows XP SP3 installation (ported from my old computer).
On the second hard disk, I have a functioning Fedora Core 9 installed on the first half of the disk's space (the installation is self-organized into several Linux partitions, e. g. /boot, /swap etc; I am a newbie so I don't know too much about Linux partitioning - only specified to Fedora how much space it could use for its volume group). I installed Solaris onto the second half of the second disk.
It has be noted that my USB external drive seemed to conflict with the network or graphics cards during the Fedora installation and caused it to hang sporadically, so I installed Fedora with this disk detached. I also detached it when I was installing Solaris, though it seems to have not influenced the problems I experienced. I also have attempted installing Solaris before I did so with Fedora, but had the same issues.

Well, it seems that the cause of the problem was that my DVD image was just corrupted - I didn't check it vs MD5 codes supplied by Sun assuming it went automatically OK. I downloaded the image again (this time it was OK), reinstalled the system and successfully logged into JDS. However, I am still puzzled why Solaris doesn't offer to create a default non-root user during the installation process.

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

My Lightroom was working fine earlier today. However I wanted to edit some photos from my new Fuji x100T in Photoshop. When I tried to go into my CC 5 Photoshop, it wouldn't load the photos because my Camera Raw Plug-In wasn't up to date and when I tried to update it, it wouldn't update it for CC5 past the version I already had which is 6.7. So I broke down and downloaded the Photoshop CC 2014 trial so I would have the most recent Camera Raw Plug In. After installing it, I tried to open Lightroom and got the message: "Configuration Error. Pleas uninstall and reinstall the product. If this problem still occurs, please contact Adobe technical support for help and mention Error 5. I have never had to uninstall a Lightroom version to be able to install an upgrade and I am concerned about losing information (presets, ratings,Maybe photos) if I do. Not sure why I am getting this message for a program which was working perfectly up to the moment I installed the CC Photoshop Trial. Help! I have work I need to do in Lightroom (and Photoshop) tonight and it is a big problem that I can't use Lightroom.

    Hi Jeff,
    Thank you for your reply.
No, I am not using Windows. I’m using Yosemite 10.10.2 on a MacBook Pro.
I ended up trashing (There was no “Uninstall" option) my old Lightroom (which was 5.7), reinstalling Lightroom 5 and then upgrading it to 5.7. Now seem to be working alright.
I uninstalled Creative Cloud 6 and went back to using CS5, using Lightroom to render the files, since I can’t use the latest Camera Raw versions with CS5, so I could work on them in Photoshop. Not an ideal solution. I wouldn’t mind upgrading to CC6 but not if it messes up everything else.
Quite honestly, I don’t understand why an Adobe user should have to depend on other Adobe customers for answers about Adobe problems. Adobe should have a strong customer support group to handle these problems, particularly when they are caused by Adobe. I have been an Adobe customer for at least 10 years. I like the products but the customer support needs to be improved. Apple does a better job.
