After installing 10.5.2 - three main side effects!

Hi all,
After upgrading 10.5.2 and graphics update I am experiencing three main problems, and just one of them seems to be a reported bug as far as I know:
1. *The black screen after going to sleep mode*. I found some threads in this forum and I have to check it out.
2. what it seems to be a weird one: I can set brightness screen up, but when I shut down the system does not seem to keep track of this setting and *goes back to full brightness on start up*... it may seems a minor bug, but believe me, it is starting to be pretty annoying.
3. When the computer is turned off, most of times if I plug it in (either to the wall socket or to the magsafe) *suddenly starts up by itself*.
By the way, my laptop is a 2.4 MBP, and yes, I zapped PRAM many times and did not work.
I hope you can help.
Best regards,
Antonio

Given the operating system updates are written the same for each similar computer system, and people with the exact same machines have had no problem whatsoever, does it not suggest there must be some contributing factor you have failed to consider? It would to me. That's what they teach in logic. And computers whether you like it or not are logical devices. They only work on zeros and ones. Either they do, or they don't work. The only way they can sometimes not work, while other times work is if some contributing factor of something which is unexpected creates a problem. What can that be? Given Apple's officially spec'ing these systems for a range of Macs, you would think that Apple has indeed tested with each of those spec'ed Macs as virgin systems. You can't possibly think that Apple has tested for all 24 thousand possible software packages in the space of time given, since even 64 software packages tested together offer more combinations of possible software packages than there are seconds in the age of the universe. So given logical possibilities, you must come to the conclusion you have tripped up one of those improbable combinations of software/hardware that Apple has not had a chance to test for yet, nor the third party developer. The update as an update is functional on a virgin system, and that's all you can ever expect it to be. It does not mean that the update is at fault for not being a working system. Apple clearly outlines what it expects of software developers here:
http://developer.apple.com/
If they don't follow those outlined steps to the letter, that's when you can run into problems.
Data corruption which is also an operating system independent issue can also lead to problems.
Let's not blame the operating system, and let's find the contributing factor causing the issue at hand.
To say the truth, this is quite surprising... didn't you read about so many troubles after upgrade? many people has got the blank screen after sleep mode and many hasn't, and so on... even I have read about people doing downgrades and not experiencing those problems. In my case, everything started from the very moment I made the upgrade.
I am not very experienced with Apple, but I've been dealing with computers since 20 years ago, I am an SAP principal consultant... and you tell me that the same software has to work in the same way with the same machine?
I had a Burt Simpsons saying but.. maybe is not the time neither the place
Thanks. but I will go to regular forums, they were always truly helpful.

  • Microsoft security patch  KB834707 side effects in NW. SAP Note 785308

I figured we should make a thread with information known about this problem.
Since the problem comes in the javascripts, I would belive the problem is on the client-side, not server side.
Does anyone know exactly what the problem is (what has Microsoft changed) ?
Please contribute with information you get from OSS's.
I'll update this first post with all available information
    Information:
    15.11: Microsoft
have to provide a solution to this problem and that it could take
some time. The problem lies on the
Microsoft side so we must wait for them before a solution can be
    provided.
    - Development has found that by adding the site to the intranet zones of
the client browser, the problem is solved, some experience of late has
shown that in some cases you have to add the full machine name to the
intranet sites and not just in the form of *.somedomain.com.
Microsoft and SAP are currently working on the problem and a proper and
long term solution is expected shortly. However no exact date has been
    specified.
    - It is possible that the problems are caused by event handlers pointing directly to a DOM function:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887741
    - I've noticed that we don't have a problem on a portal running EP 6 SP2 P3 Hf4 , after installing the hotfix on the client side. Maybe the problem is on the server side or maybe because it is an intranet portal only(however, I had no problems when setting it to be in the internet security zone). Awaiting confirmation from SAP

    a) Go to <http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/p-006.shtml> and search for the "CAN-" links. Each component has a one paragraph description.
    b) According to <http://patch-info.de/IE/2004/10/12/20-35-16.html> it contains:
    mshtml.dll (6,0,2800,1476 - 29,09,2004)
    urlmon.dll (6,0,2800,1474 - 23,09,2004)
    shdocvw.dll (6,0,2800,1584 - 27,08,2004)
    wininet.dll (6,0,2800,1468 - 23,08,2004)
    browseui.dll (6,0,2800,1584 - 22,08,2004)
    shlwapi.dll (6,0,2800,1584 - 20,08,2004)
    c) Some of the things that could be breaking are DOM references and DHTML, which are advanced features that not every application uses.
    From <http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-038.mspx>:
"Caveats: Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 834707 <http://support.microsoft.com/?id=834707> documents the currently known issues that customers may experience when they install this security update. The article also documents recommended solutions for these issues."
Among other issues, that page says [<b>emphasis</b> added]:
    - After you install the MS04-038 security updates for Internet Explorer, some dynamic HTML (DHTML) <b>drag-and-drop operations are blocked</b> by Internet Explorer.
    - Security update 834707 includes a change to the way that Internet Explorer handles function pointers. This change in functionality occurs when an event handler points directly to a Document Object Model (DOM) function [...] Change in Internet Explorer function pointer behavior <b>causes code to not be executed</b> when an event handler is set to directly reference a DOM function after installing MS04-038 security updates.
BTW, Note 785308 has been updated with a workaround.

  • No audio on OS X side after installing boot camp

After installing Leopard and then boot camp (with Windows Vista) I find that audio doesn't play through the external speakers on the mac side of my computer. I can hear a faint, tinny sound on the internal speaker. Strangely, audio plays fine when running the Vista side.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I understand boot camp replaces an audio driver. I'll report this to apple support when I manage to get through.

    Thanks for the quick response.
    Yes, did that. Hardwire connection.
Tried Network Utility - pinged my router at 192.168.1.1 - no answer.
Also used a Network Setup Wizard (but don't know how I got there) and was unable to do a setup - it wanted a DHCP Client ID - - and my ISP (three different techs) told me that they don't use a client ID.
Also called Apple support - I've had this mini for a little over 100 days, so he wanted $49 for one time support or $149 for Apple Care. He gave me several hints and directions to try, and also made an appointment for me at my local Apple store. Buy I'd much rather solve it here and learn a little about Macs and OS X.

Looking forward to hearing from somebody with a littlemore expertise than me, Chris

you can remove preferences files by navigating to the Preferences folder for your user as follows:
    0) Quit ALL iWork apps (Keynote, Pages and Numbers)
    1) from the Finder select the menu item "Go > Go To Folder…".  This will bring up a dialog:
    2) enter the path "~/Library/Preferences" (no double quotes)
    3) find the files:
    com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
and move these to the trash.  I would NOT empty until later.

  • HT1338 Can't access my mac os side after installing win7

I just installed windows 7 on my new mac using boot camp. I followed all the steps but after installing win7 there is no way I can access my mac os partition. I tried to reboot with the Alt/option key pressed but I am presented with a window asking me to provide a password. When I enter my password, it won't let me in. It just delete the password. I have re-tried several times but it won't work. My question are:
    1. Is there any way I can install windows support software (for the driver) from bootcamp since I cannot access my mac side.
    2. I tried to download and install bootcamp but it doesn't work since it says I do not need to install any bootcamp update.
    3. Is there any ways I can go past the mac password screen? I really don't understand why it doesn't accept my password. I am the only administrator and user of my computer

    Hi,
You need to sign in when using Photoshop Elements 12 as it is the method of activation. If you sign out it deactivates that installation.
If you are having problems, see if the following helps.

That means that you have to restore the de ice using iTunes on a computer. There is nothing else that you can do to fix it now and you cannot back it up now either. Connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes and restore the iPad.
IF you don't have a computer, find someone that has one running iTunes or go to an Apple Store and ask them to restore it for you.

  • RS Configuration Manager can no longer find 2008 R2 instance after installing 2012 instance side-by-side

    Hi all,
I had a (default) SQL Server 2008 R2 RS instance running just fine until I installed a SQL Server 2012 instance side by side.
Now, the original reporting service service still runs, as in the Windows service is still running and I can access the web based Report Manager, but I can no longer access it via the Reporting Services Configuration Manager (2008). I keep getting the message
"No report servers were found" when trying to connect.
The 2012 version of Reporting Services Configuration Manager is able to find the new 2012 instance though.
I've found an article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960374/en-us) that handles this, but I don't have a dedicated server available to test this on, so I'd like some more info first, if possible.
The article handles SQL Server 2008 vs SQL Server 2005, so not sure if it applies to my case (in other articles I read that the WMI namespaces have changed between 2005 and 2008, but nothing is said about 2012).
It says to update the ReportingService.mof file by replacing RS_[instance_name] by [instance_name], but the .mof file that handles the 2012 instance also contains the RS_[instance_name] text and seems to run just fine
Any other suggestions or extra details about the above would be greatly appreciated!

    You can try the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

Why can I cannot log into to my AOL account after installing OSX Mavericks?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
