You know that you lost the layers when you saved it as a jpeg, right? But you're saying you can't add layers to the jpeg now when it's open in the editor? Go to Image>mode and be sure it's RGB, for starters. Are all the commands in the Layer menu grayed out?

The District is right to say what they told you they can't install Disctrict Windows 7 on your computer because they have a license agreements with MS and doing so will violate their Terms of Agreement. And you shouldn't be asking something like that to start with. If that laptop can't install Windows 7 it then your stuck with WIndows 8 unless HP has downgrade to go back to Windows 7 on it otherwise if none exist you will not get any drivers or support for it. You best luck is to find a used Windows 7 laptop and order the HP recovery media for it and wipe it clean to factory install and register it to you and that will give you a Windows 7 maching to start with.

Does it happen with the apps that came with the iPod?
Does it happen with all apps you have downloaded/installed?
Have you ried deleting the apps and redownload/install the apps? You will not be charged again if you are signed into the same iTunes account that originally purchased the apps.
Next would be to restore from backup

This is a brand new machine that I just purchased from Apple. It was delivered yesterday
The old computer is an old PowerMac G5, but my OS X install disc is a retail version of 10.5.
I also tried the OS X 10.5 install disc that came with my MacBook Pro (2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Dual).

Have you tried resetting network settings, then unplugging modem and router from power for 40 seconds then plugging back in letting the lights stabilize and Then recconecting with the ipod>?

Back to Snow Leopard from Lion install method
Read and print out these instructions, your computer is going to be offline and you wil be cutoff from help until your machine is restored.
Clear the Desktop, Downloads and Trash of anything you wish to keep by placing their files in the respective Documents, Music, Pictures, Movie folders.
If you have a TimeMachine drive, update it and disconnect for the duration of this restore time. It will be your second backup system and will have to be wiped and setup again after successfully going back to Snow Leopard if it was connected to the OS X 10.7 boot drive. If it wasn't, then leave it disconnected without updating to Lion.
Backup ALL your Users folders (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music etc) manually (drag and drop methods) to a (not TimeMachine) external powered drive (HFS+ journaled formatted in Disk Utility) and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire disk of ALL DATA. (warning, everything will be gone and not recovered)
Here we go!
Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP.
Look at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
On the left is the name of your hard drive maker, click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same name as before, and click Erase...
This should wipe the drive of ALL partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery, Windows if present)
When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6. Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
When you setup a first account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop the content of your previous Users folders from the external drive right back into the new Users folders and everything should work peachy. Links in iTunes to music, playlists and iPhoto links especially.
Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.

(Note: If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first using the same c boot/erase/format methods as above, then update to 10.6 via the disk, then Combo Update 10.6.8)
Final step optional but highly receommended.
A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a HFS+Journaled external drive as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes wrong with their boot drive or need to restore to a previous OS X version.. (in addition to TimeMachine drive for more immediate backups.)
It's not advised to have a Bootable Clone and a TimeMachine partition on the same external drive, as two drives gives hardware protection in case one fails.

Running iMac, iPad/iPhone and 2 separate Airport Express, each connected to a different stereo in the house.
I would like to run the iMac itunes library remotely using the shared function on the ipad.
However when running music from iTunes on the iMac I can select speakers and both AEs so music is running from 3 sets of speakers. But on iPad I can only select iPad speakers or AE1 or AE2.
How may I get it to run both AEs please from iPad and using the Shared Function accessing the iMac itunes library?

Track pad moves the cursor but will NOT allow click after a period of usage. After Forced reboot track pad works fine for a few hours. This started within hours of installing Yosemite. Help, I am afraid I will lose a document during reboot. So far I have been lucky and have not lost data.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

Lightroom and Using the editor in PS3

On using Lightroom to open up a DNG file file in Photoshop CS3 I receive the message "Lightoom is unable to prepare the selected file (file address) It will not be opened". I have read the other links in this forum and have tried the solutions offered with no success. I have plenty of space on my hard drives and I use the default folders to store the images.
Does anyone have any other ideas why Lightroom cannot open a file which it has saved and provides the correct file path?
Currently I am using a work around by using Photoshop manually to open up the DNG and saving as a TIFF. I then drag and drop this into Lightroom to import it into the catalogue. But what a fuss. Lightroom can then open the TIFF in Photoshop, but I am unlikely to want to do this.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Although Jao's tip enabled me to open my TIFF file in Photoshop I wasn't able to "save" the file in Photoshop but could only use "Save as" which was still a hassle. Photoshop was reporting "Could not complete your request due to a programe error. It was also reporting an error under File/File Info in the drop down menu.
It would seem that Jao's tip simply worked round the initial problem rather than curing it as in both cases the problem was with Save, but I could Save As. It appeared that the problem was around the metadata and after much experimenting discovered that the problem was due to editing the capture time on my imports in Lightroom. I took all the times back several hours and did this before I adjusted the image in Photoshop. I had tried to set back the time to its original capture time, but this did not help. The solution was to delete all of the imported files and re-import. I then edited the files in photoshop before changing the capture times. However, I must admit that I am now reluctant to change the capture times at all - which isn't a great loss.

You have not said exactly what it is you are doing or where, but clicking on an image should produce the Edit Mask slider.
There are 2 parts to what you see. The Mask which contains and crops the Image which is the picture itself and may extend beyond the mask or cover only part of the Mask. You can edjust both the position and scale of each independently.
1. Sliding the scale will enlarge or reduce the image within the mask
2. Clicking on the Edit Mask will highlight the Mask box with adjustment handles with the masked image appearing outside the mask faded back. You can pull at the Mask handles to adjust them.
3. Clicking on the faded part of the Image lets you click inside the Image to move it relative to the mask, or on its handles to scale it
4. Clicking inside the Mask lets you grab the Mask handles to rescale the Mask with the existing cropping
5. If the image is inline (part of the text) you can click inside it and only the right and bottom handles are highlighted and draggable. You can again click on the Edit Mask to reposition and rescale the Image as above.
