  • Installing iTunes made windows stop recognizing my iPod

*Short version:* the USB driver included in Apple Mobile Device Support with the latest version of iTunes did not work. Deleting them made my iPod work.
    *Long Version:*
I had an iPod Mini (4gb, past warranty) that recently had a harddisk failure, so I bought a new Nano. I uninstalled itunes, removed all related files and folders, downloaded itunes 7.5 and installed it, and plugged in the Nano. Error message: "Your hardware failed to install properly." ITunes did not see the ipod.
I spent a couple hours going through the apple.com troubleshooting suggestions, which did not work. Device Manager had the yellow exclamation point icon by "Apple iPod USB Driver" no matter what I did. Eventually, I decided to purge my computer of all Apple products, delete all copies of usbaapl.sys (the nonfunctioning driver) from my computer, and plug in the Nano without installing itunes. It worked! So I installed itunes, rebooted, plugged the Nano back in, and... it didn't work.
So, installing itunes made windows stop recognizing my ipod. At this point I decided that itunes might be using a bad copy of the driver, so I deleted all copies of usbaapl.sys from my computer and tried again. It asked for the install disk for "Apple mobile device" something, so I used Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support. After that, it's working.
So, I spent three hours troubleshooting because the drivers packaged with the latest version of itunes don't work. Spiffy.

Had the same problem and I uninstalled all apple products (itunes Apple mobile support, etc.), deleted all usbaapl.sys files, and reinstalled latest version of itunes + quicktime. I had the same problem. I then unplugged my IPOD from the USB connection, put it in disk mode, and then plugged the IPOD back into the USB connection and EVERYTHING WORKED!!
The following article describes how to put an IPOD into disk mode:

  • My iMac (Intel) has stopped writing DVDs and CDs - what do I do?

My iMac (Intel) has stopped writing DVDs and CDs - what do I do first?

You can try one of the CD/DVD cleaning discs but I doubt it will work. Your superdrive has probably failed.
you can have Apple replace it, for around $120, or buy any brand external DVD drive that connects by USB port and it will work with your Mac. Most cost around $30.

  • Superdrive suddenly stopped recognizing DVDs and DVD-Rs

Okay, I just spend 2 whole days trying to find any situation like this. Trouble shooting and experimenting.
Whilst burning a CD with Toast the process suddenly stopped during verification and an error was given. The CD spit out. It was just some music and I had work to do, so.. I went on to burning some data onto a DVD-R.
The Disk went in. Spun. Made a noise like the when a reader is trying to figure out what the media is. A Grrrrr. It spins some more. A long pause of about a minute.
Then the disk is spit out. No error. The disk is never recognized. Toast asks for blank media again. Keep in mind, just before this I was burning DVD-Rs. Same Media. Same process. Just stopped to burn the music CD.
So, I figure its bad media. I get about 1 or 2 on a spindle of disks. Usually at the bottom or the first disk. So, I put another disk in and try again.
Same thing. So, I try from Finder. Disk is never recognized. It is spit out the same way. (Thought that maybe something on Toast was corrupt)
Pretty freaked out, I put a burned DVD-R in. Nothing. Then a comercially pressed DVD. Spit out as well. (It was Elf. Which I would have spit out too) I then put a pressed CD in. (Madonna) It is recognized and iTunes starts up. The CD even plays.
I try to burn a CD-R. The process starts and when it is buring the Write out at the end it stops and gives me:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = BLANK CHECK
    Sense Code = 0x00
    NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION
Then the disk is spit out after I hit Okay. Eeep.
Someone gives me a Maxell lense cleaner disk. Nothing to lose. I played it. Because it is a CD format. The drive recognizes it and I am able to run the clean process.
Then I got the same results. One attempt I get another error:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x44, 0x8E
    INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE
Now all this is strange because... this is a 9 month old G5 dual with the superdrive that Apple put in it. Pioneer DVR-109 dual layer DVD-RW. There have been no unusual behavior leading up to this failure. The drive is not over used. I have not changed media.
I tested the drive with DVD-Rs from other spindles. And different brands. Including some old 1X DVD-Rs that I had forgotten in my hutch. (still sealed in there crystal cases) Same results.
So...has anyone ever experienced this with the 109? or even other drives. I can't believe it is a hardware issue because there hasn't been any previous signs of impending failure. (I have seen the deaths of several drives over the years) I am convinced that it is some obscure control files somewhere.
I ran Tech Tool Pro 4.1.1 on it and did a surface scan of a CD. The only way I could get it to recognize the drive. It reported the drive as unwritable, even though it identified it correctly. (as did System Profiler)
Sorry for the long explaination. But, I don't want to waste anyones time with avenues I have already explored.
Thanks to anyone who has some light to shed on this.

    Thanks Drew,
I have avoided the external drive option because I thought that they would be slower, or less reliable. However, we have been using those Maxtor Firewire external HDD around here and they are great. So, maybe an external DVD-R might be a good solution now.
(They used to be fairly poor options a few years ago.)
We have an Apple Store 2 blocks from my office here in San Francisco. Shiny new and it looks like a Titanium Cube. My experiences with the Genius Bar and before that Applecare have been the feeling that they spend a good deal of time trying to see how this could be my fault and not their responsibility.
Also, because I am a bit of a geek, by the time I resort to getting help from them, I have exhausted the usual "in the book" solutions. Usually, they are ill prepared for something unusual, that isn't caused by not having the power plugged in, etc.
I do customer service here for the more technical issues our customers have with Video on Demand and DVD issues. People can be really hostile when they call. So, I go out of my way to be pleasant and upbeat when I am dealing with my problems. Apple Care/Genius Bar people aren't rude or anything. I just get the feeling that they are pressured to not spend too much money making customers satisfied with their hardware. (a matter of policy is my bet)
I use my Macs because their software is unparalled in its ease of use and professional application. When I have to deal with duplication houses and their techs. I often hear a sign of relief when I tell them that I am using DVD Studio Pro to author my masters. Because this means that the DVD-Rs I send them are correct and compliant in everyway.
Apple software rocks. I am encouraged by their move to Intel chips recently for their hardware.
Thanks again Drew. I am working on the permissions today and if it looks like a hardware issue, I am off to look at an external. Great suggestion.

  • TS2363 Hi Guys!  Can someone tell me why after installing itunes  V 10.7.0.21 and Quicktime 7.73.80.64  I can no longer get a movie to play.   I completely deleted all programs to do with itune then reinstalled all the latest version back into my desktop.

When I start itunes up and click on a movie I get an error message:  saying something about Quicktime error!  How can this be if I have the latest version.
I'm running Windows 7 on a desktop and before the upgrade of itunes every movie played.  Today I bought a new movie and it said I needed the upgraded version of itunes for it to play.  What a mess.  Any help appreciated.

had similiar problem with update in september.  did the uninstall and reinstall procedure twice and still no luck.  finally I just dragged the movie ontop of quicktime and dropped.  clicked the play button and movie played fine.  hope this helps.

  • Computer can't find DVD/CD-ROM drives after installing iTunes

After installing iTunes, my computer no longer can detect my DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives. They've disappeared from the "My Computer" window.
I ran "System Restore" and the disc drives showed up, but now they're undetected once again after I re-installed iTunes. I've restarted, I've uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes, I've run the built-in diagnostic self-checks on the drives, I downloaded updated drivers, I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, spent 1 hour on the phone with Apple support, and finally spent 2 hours on the phone with Dell Support. Nothing. Please help--I want to be able to use my iPod with Windows.

    Dell Dimension E510   Windows XP

Hey there. May I interject? Anyone mind?
For the most part, what's occurring is one of two things. Either...
    A) an application (such as Roxio, Nero, iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
    or
    B) a virus (or trojan) burrows its way into your file structure, and creates an element of itself disguised as a .SYS file. We've seen this happen before with viral elements disguising themselves as audio or video card driver files, in the efforts of masking themselves from lower-class anti-virus programs (or un-updated ones). In this case, they take on the name of a driver file that the optical drives are "familiar" with, and so, with the intention of being "fast, friendly, and efficient", the optical drives are tapped to utilize this new "driver" file... and it gets referenced in the registry as such.
However, when your anti-virus actually snaps to it, and removes the virus / trojan, and you go off on a virus-killing mission, galavanting through the registry and cleaning the little buggers out in Safe Mode and everything... you might remove the viral elements... but... the reference to them might still remain. The device manager is still looking for that "driver file", and will cause the optical drives to lock up in a Code 39 or Code 41 because of it.
Either way, the thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list!!! It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal
I don't know if this will help, I think it should.
Good Luck. Post back if you have a problem.

  • Re: Satellite P - CD/DVD drive has been disabled after installing itunes 8

*Help*! After installing itunes 8 my CD/DVD/RW has been disabled.
This has happened before and I have restored it by deleting the upper and lower filters in the Vista registry but then itunes tells me that "The registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing." and I am unable to burn anything from itunes.
Does anyone out there know how to restore the CD/DVD/RW drive and retain the full use of itunes please?

Have you tried to reinstall iTunes?
Reinstall the old iTunes, reboot the computer and clean by using CCleaner. Then you can install the newest version of iTunes.
If it doesnt work try to remove the upper- and lower filters again. Maybe you should do this after you have reinstalled iTunes.
Last but not least, this could be useful for you:

  • IPhone is no more visibile in My Computer after installing iTunes 8

Hi all, after installing iTunes 8, iPhone isn't visible anymore in my Computer section in Windows. Previously, when I connected it, it was recognized as a photocamera and, from my Computer, i could access to it to see the photos that are stored on the iPhone.
Now, instead, iPhone isn't displayed anymore: except for this, it works correctly; iTunes 8 recognizes it and synchronizes it.
Notice: after the iTunes upgrade, when I've connected the iPhone for the first time, Windows says that he has found a new hardware and installed a new driver for an Apple Mobile Device USB.
Has someone else experienced my problem? Thanks in advance!

im having the exact opposite problem....my 3g is recognized inmy computer as a camera..but isnt recognized in itunes?
i have no pics downloaded from emails (as i researched this before)
the other night had same problem, had to restore phone, and re-install itunes..then no problem...but tonite trying to add new music and same thing again.

    HELP!
FYI, i phone not being used as phone, being used as ipod, and only using wifi..has no sim installed.

  • I have been using an external mouse on my Macbook Pro.  The mouse worked fine for weeks and still works great on other computers.  My problem is that my notebook stopped recognizing it for no reason.  It is funny this problem started last night. Thanks

I do not know why the notebook stopped recognizing the external mouse.

I just found out that if I restart the notebook and plug in the mouse it will work flawless for a few minutes, but then something recognizes it and it stops working.  I am really fed up with Mac. It is always something.  Safari quits unexpectedly everyother day and asks me to repert the problem, which never goes through.  Safari's beachball also spins uncontrolably for hours until I press the button to force quit. It never allows me to collaborate my email with MAIL, and anytime I want to send an email it goes to an email that claims no valid password when that is clearly not the problem.  I am a proud purchaser of 3 Iphones, Ipad, Ipod nano, and a macbook pro, but I am getting sick to my stomach with this nonsense.  I have wasted a whole day!  When I asked a question last time it asked for money!  Itunes has taken back hundreds of dollars worth of songs that I have purchased, and summoned me for more money in order for me to keep them!   I can't get anything done with this mac!  Where is the customer support!? Counter productive, and I will be voicing my opinion loudly.

  • No cd drive after installing itunes

    Regards,Tony

No you can't use WMP to sync your iPod.
You could take a look at Yamipod which allows you to manage your iPod without iTunes, but why not try and get iTunes working.

  • TS1277 after installing itunes, my computer won't recognize my cdrom/burner any longer.  Worked  ok before and I have uninstalled itunes and it works again and when I reinstall itunes it won't work again.  I have also went into registry files and deleted

After installing itunes, my desktop computer doesn't recognize my internal cd rom/burner.  I removed itunes and it works ok and when I reinstall itunes it won't work again.  I went into the windows registry files and deleted the lower filter which is one correction for this and it worked ok until the next itunes upgrade and now it won't work again.  If anyone knows what to do please let me know.  My device manager shows a code "10"

My device manager shows a code "10"
That suggests an AFS.sys issue. But we'd better doublecheck.
Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". (If you're running iTunes 11.0.x you'll need to bring up your menu bar first to see the Help menu.) Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:
... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here. (Use your Ctrl-V keyboard shortcut to paste.)

  • Question about a log in Console after installing iTunes update

After installing iTunes I noticed these logs in Console:
    11/29/12 6:11:47.673 PM sudo[1485]: root : TTY=unknown ; PWD=/private/tmp/PKInstallSandbox.8WAxMg/Scripts/com.apple.pkg.MobileDevice.hTs dtR ; USER=XXXXXX ; COMMAND=/bin/launchctl load -w //System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.MDCrashReportd.plist

I noticed that they have something to do with Crash Reporter, but are they a crash, or some command to the file during the install of the update? Any insight from someone who understands the terminal commands would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Scott

The Safe Mode startup key combo is the same; Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs, it just isn't working for you.
I suggest starting from the Install DVD that came with your iMac. Once in the Installer you will find tools in the Utilties menu. Using the Disk Utility try repairing the startup volume.

  • "Holiday" Section in Radio Streaming Disappears after Installing iTunes 9

Yup, as the topic suggests, after installing iTunes 9 on my Macbook 13' just recently, I realised that my favourite radio stream, 'Holiday' in iTunes has mysteriously disappeared. Is there anyone who has experienced a similar incident as I have? Does anyone know of any way for me to place this Holiday section back?
    Thanks in advance.

Is this the station you seek?
    http://www.live365.com/stations/winterscapes
Remember, all the stations shown in iTunes' Radio section are just feeds from other streaming audio sites. Apple does not host or create any of these feeds and the offered stations change frequently - especially as part of an iTunes upgrade. Many of the iTunes offerings are actually Live365 stations.
If you get the station to start in iTunes from that link, that creates a 'Music' entry in your iTunes library that you can reuse. It will eventually stop working and you'll need to revisit the Live365 site to get a 'fresh' version of the station.
If the link opens and plays through a web based player window you'll have to edit your playback preferences through the Live365.com site to use an external MP3 player which will then redirect it iTunes. Definitely more of a hassle, but it will work.

    Many Thanks,
Yvan Janssens (this is not my Mac)

I'm running OSX 10.6.4 on MacBook Pro (a couple of years old) ... and my (original) iPhone is recognized just fine by the new iTunes 9. I too am anxiously awaiting arrival of my iPhone 4 ... and got the same kind of shipment information as other folks described on the iPad; i.e. being shipped direct from China via Hong Kong. I sure hope they've got the bugs worked out of that process since the iPad 3G fiasco. I was also amused (NOT!) by "additional information" in the shipping-email I got from Apple. Basically it says that if there is a delay in activating the phone via iTunes, "trust us" that Apple and AT&T will be working to get it activated as quickly as possible and will send out an email when it is activated --- in other words "don't call us, we'll call you".
David Brooks during his commentary last night on The News Hour made some comments about how business processes are really starting to break down in this country. I couldn't agree more. Last Thursday's mess was inexcusable! You'd think that the huge (and incredibly profitable) corporations like (BP), Apple, and AT&T would spend as much time and effort and money to get their processes in as good a shape as their products! Urrrrrr! Let's hope that the iPhone enrollment process goes better.
