after installing lion, time machine does not always back up.  The back up disk is occasionally not recognized.  Help!

This is easy one.. for most.. just restart the TC.. ie pull out the power.. count to 10.. plug in the power.
If the simple doesn't work you can see more info here.

  • After installing Yosemite Time machine does not work

Time machine no longer works after Yosemite installed. Can this be fixed?

Mine isn't working either.  First time I've tried to backup an iMac and it is after 10.10.3 update.  It won't complete the backup.  File in finder ends in "in progress" - i have tried with two different drives, ran tests on both and on my startup disk.  It is a brand new WD 2T My Passport for MAC and basically a brand new iMac (late 2014) - it will NOT complete a backup.  I cannot find any answers on the support discussions - how can I get this working? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated - I'm concerned I don't have this machine backed up at all.
Here is what Time Machine is telling me (I tried disk utility on both of the external hard drives I have - and neither had an issue to fix):

  • After installing lion time machine is unable to make back up

Yesterday I installed Lion and wantedbto make à back up with time machine, but this failled.
    I received the following message:
Time machine was unable to acces the back up volume 'volume/timecapsule emd/iMac of Edwin.sparsebundle' That is used for making back ups. (error 111). This is a translation of the error message in Dutch.
Through time machine I tried to acces my pre kous back ups, but again I received an error. This read:
This processen could not be completed. There has been an unexpected error ( errorcode -6584)
When I open finder I can see my time capsule and it says That it is connected.
I expected no problems since I am using à time capsule from apple.
Is There somebody with a solution?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

That seems unusual unless you changed drives.
If you upgraded the drive it sees the computer as a different one to the original backup..
I am not sure that it isn't better to do a fresh backup but you can try and inherit the old backup..

  • After installing mountain lion, can i back up all my files from external time machine hard drive if i did the back up under Lion?

Hi. Want to find out before installing new Mountain Lion if I will be able to restore all my files (music, documents....) from my external hird drive if the back up was done under Lion. Or it is better to simply copy everything, altough it would be good to keep iTunes, contacts etc as well as they are at the moment. Could someone please tell me how to do it so I can go on with it and will not have to struggle after the installation? Many thanks.

You can do this. If you did an OS X Mountain Lion clean install, it will ask you to restore a backup, so connect a Time Machine disk and restore that

  • Problem After Installing UBUNTU-Time machine

Hi, I beg you could help me!
    I have a mid 2012 macbook pro (i7, 13 inches, 8gb ram, etc, NOT RETINA, 750gb)
Yesterday I connected my Lacie 2tb external disk to computer, It started to make a copy...and, it finished.
My setup was 150gb for windows (installed with bootcamp) and the rest for OS X (mountain lion).
Today I made a 80gb partition for UBUNTU, I've downloaded rEFIt and installed it.
After installing rEFIt, I shuted down my MAC, and ran ubuntu installer from a bootable USB.
I've installed Ubuntu, tested, played a little with it and then I rebooted to see if my OS X partition was ok.
First, rEFIt didn't show, so mac started booting linux, after this a LINUX menu appeared showing some operating systems and aksing which to log...
I rebooted again, pressing opt key, and rEFIt, windows, and recovery partition showed...i took rEFIt, entered OS X, and erase from disk utiliy linux partition...
When i restarted mac again pressing opt key, mac and windows partition where showing, nothing about recovery...so I connected LACIE disk, to make a restore of my system, but it showed that my last copy was on the 4 of JUNE (pretty old copy), but in time machine  appears that my last copy was yesterday (don't know how to solve that either)... (IF SOMEONE COULD TELL ME HOW TO RESTORE FROM MY LAST COPY, DONT HELP ME WITH MBR RESTORATION PLS!
Well, after booting in my Lacie Disk too, I repaired some errors my macintosh HD had, from disk utility placed there, AND in this window also appeared a mac os hd of about 2gb (which I think its my recovery) but named as disk1 and without any chance of doing something to it...so is there any way to fix MBR?
When i use diskutil list command on terminal it doesn't show recovery hd o disk1 hd...
    THANKS

The 2gb partition i talked about it's the one given by using INTERNET RECOVERY, so, it seems that i do not have any recovery partition in my mac, so, problem resumes to restoring system by the last copy in time machine which is not showing in internet recovery, but it does shows in my user account.
    Thanks for help!

  • Trouble after installing a time machine back up on my new macbook pro

The time machine back up actually worked well.  The issue is that the new mac is a macbook pro and the time machine install was from a mid 2009 Macbook air.   It is saying that the mail program cannot be used on the operating system.   I would assume it has installed an old mail program on my new machine and that is the issue.  The machine does not come with a cd to install the upgraded mail so how do I fix this issue?

I accidentally bypassed the restore from Time capsule portion when I first started the computer so had to do this.
You actually don't want to do this.  The hardware in your new MacBook Pro is significantly different from your 2009 Air.  You may end up with stability issues and potentially a system that won't even boot into the OS.  Podini's suggestion is best.

  • Installing Lion - time machine error

When trying to install Lion my hard drive says it's used for time machine back-ups and it's not.  I see that Apple says to get rid of the back-up file but I can't find any such file on my hard drive

No, if you are talking about the Time Machine (I forgot that) you just need to restart it by pulling the plug.  It will run disk utility automatically. Sorry for the confusion.

  • After installing mavericks time machine no longer visible in finder. how can I get back to see it?

Click on the Desktop. Select Preferences from the Finder menu. Check the General and Sidebar toolbar items. See that the appropriate boxes are checked.

  • After System Restore Time Machine does too much!

I had some issues with boot camp that I will not go into now. Haha. After reinstalling Leopard and using my previous time machine backup stuff to resort to, my computer is fine. It's just like the way I left it the last time i did a backup. However, when I went to do a current back up, it has to back up like 100 GB of stuff which makes no sense, I have done nothing new. I think it's backing up the same stuff that it already has. Somehow after the system restore it can't tell that it already backed up everything that's on my computer. Any suggestions!? Thanks.

Is there anything I can do so that I don't have to waste so much space with the same stuff?

  • After installing Lion, Time Capsule backed-up my mac, but unfortunately it deleted all my old beck up!! I think it's terrible, what was the point than to have time capsule??now I lost all my back up with no warning....

Be crafull with updating to Lion.
I lost all my backup and my mac got realy slow...
Any suggestion if it is possible after all to recover my old back up from the time capsule?  I guess it lost though.

Mount and open the internal disk of the Time Capsule.  How many "sparsebundle" files do you see?  If you only have one Mac using Time Machine but you see two such files, then one of them has your old data.  In this case you may have missed a chance to continue using the old Time Machine file.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

  • After installing Lion my iSight does not record video or doesn't allow me to post a video on sites like Facebook. Any solutions?

Does it have anything to do with Flash combatibility?

Whenever I record video on like Photobooth it would unexpectedly crash or if I want to record and leave a video on someone's wall on Facebook it doesn't let me allow access to my camera or microphone on the Adobe Flash Player Settings for privacy.

  • Clean installed Snow Leopard, but Lion Time Machine backup was not recognized.

I erased the Macintosh HD and clean installed the Snow Leopard. But when I try to use the Time machine backup to recovery my documents, the external hard disk can not even be recognized. It says "To use this disk, connect it to a Mac with Mac OS X v10.7 or later. The format of the disk was created using Lion which can not be read by Snow Leopard." The fact is that the format of the disk is Mac OS Extended (journaled) and was indeed created by Lion from windows format. So how can I read the disk using Snow Leopard? Thanks.

I it a general problem, affecting e.g. a Mac with multiple partitions.  I get the same with trying to mount 10.7 from 10.6.8.
Not ideal.  Hope a fix will be found. I'd suggest to report this to Apple.
