After iphoto makes a copy of my picture file, can i change where that copy is stored?

I would like to keep both my original files and my iphoto "shadow" files on an external drive to save space on my laptop. Once I import my pictures to iphoto, where are those new iphoto files saved? Can I change this to always save to my external drive?

the iPhoto library is a single entity - you can run it on an external drive but you can not have part of it one place and part another place
to run your library on and external drive
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

I'm trying to clean up extra iPhoto positions. What other folders and files can I eliminate?

I have too much redundancy. iPhoto Libraries have been started over the last couple of years without much thought to structure. If I identify and remove the picture files in "Originals" and "Modifieds" (identified by using "Show Package Contents") and move them to secure locations (designated folders on another drive) what other files can I eliminate? Inside of "Show Package Contents" I see folders for Data.noindex, Library.iphoto, Contents, and Metadata Backup? Other files show as well. Can these be eliminated or do they contain critical picture files? I'm working with iPhoto Manager to identify and manage libararies.

Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
I don't know anyway to make things clearer.

Thanks for you suggestion but it didn't work - are there other ways for solving this problem? Or is it because my files that I want to copy and paste onto my hard disk etc are too big? (However there is space on my hard disk and it works on a PC)

IPhoto makes 3 copies of each picture!

This might be a dead horse, but I've got just got my self a new digicam and so am taking pictures again. Since this time round I have a mac, I want to use iPhoto for organizing my photos.
However, when I import say three photos, they all go into the 'originals' 'modified' and 'data' folders under 'iPhoto Library'. I take on average two hundred photos a week, and so having each import take up three times the amount of space is crazy!
So:
1. How do I work around this?
2. If I want to edit a photo in Photoshop, how do I make sure iPhoto sees the changes in the picture?
I understand what the folders are for, but I don't want each picture on my computer three times!!

Don't use iPhoto.
If you do want to use iPhoto, that's how it works-though it doesn't actually take up three times as much space.
If you didn't edit the photo, there shouldn't be a copy in Modified. Thumbnails should be less than 100KB- mine are mostly 40-75KB, even for 7+ MB originals. If you know what the folders are for, you should understand why it's necessary that they be there. Having the thumbnails in the Data folder is what allows iPhoto to effectively handle thousands of images that for some people may be 50+ MB each. Having the Modified folder allows you to safely edit without forever losing your original photo.
2. If I want to edit a photo in Photoshop, how do I make sure iPhoto sees the changes in the picture?
Select the photo in iPhoto, Ctrl-click, and select Edit in External Editor.
Basically, if you want iPhoto to be aware of changes you make, you have to initiate the activity from within iPhoto.

When I create a calendar, in iphoto 8, I had an information pane lower left corner with date and time of the picture. Can it possibly be that the iphoto developers forgot about that in iphoto 9? This was very helpful when placing images according to date.

Today I updated to the latest iphoto version. The update itself went smooth and nice as one is used to from Apple. But when I wanted to finish my already started calendar, I have encountered two problems. The first is that I can't view the aperture library anymore directly from iphoto. Instead I have to open the iphtoto library in aperture but then my calendar isn't there. So now I have to copy images back and forth. No problem.
However, the old iphoto had a small information area in the lower left corner which was very nice to place images on an exact date. This seems to be gone...?? Really? How am I supposed to sort images according to date and time when I have to back to the library view every time? That's not very convenient..Or am I missing something?

The first is that I can't view the aperture library anymore directly from iphoto.
THat is exceeding strange since iPhoto '08 could not open or share an Aperture library - that ability was first introduced in iPhoto '11 - with the latest version of iPhoto and or Aperture you can open the same library with either application - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5043
In the current version of iPhoto the photos are sorted by date in the film strip - I've not recently done a calendar so do not remember the specifics -

In my iphoto if i click on a picture i can't see it insted i see a big !

if i go in to my iphoto i can see all my pictures but if i click on any of tham i see a big ! mark in a gray triengle. all of the pictures are like that

The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the options you want and rebuild.

My friend sent me a picture how can i print a hard copy?

I saved the picture in my photos & i can see it theres no problem but when i take my iphone 5 to the shop to print the picture of my little grandson it doesnt show up in my pictures

The iPad can not play some video formats such as WMV or FLV. Those would need to be converted on your computer to something the iPad can play, like M4V or MP4.
You might ask the person who sent the message to you to do the conversion and send it again.

When I am looking at a direct image (Example: an imgur link) the picture is centered and on a dark grey page after I updated to FF 11.0. How can I change this back to normal?

As the title suggests since updating whenever I visit a direct image link the page turns dark grey and the image is centered.

I suggest you simply copy your entire User folder from old computer to new computer. This way all your data (Music, photos, contacts, emails, calendars, documents, etc.) goes across.

If i have to close Firefox after attempting to load a page locks the machine up, what setting can i change where it will not automatically try to reload the page when i restard the browser?

Say i try to open a pdf link for example (although not limited to) and Firefox stops responding; if i close the browser and open it again, it will attempt to reload the same page that just locked it up. How do i turn this off? I get the "Well, this is embarrassing." error fairly often (after 'end task'-ing twice) :/
