After iPod Update - how long does "do not disconnect" appear?

I've just updated my older iPod (20GB, iPod version 3.02
Model No. M9282LL) using updater 2006-03-23, and the "Do Not Disconnect" notice has appeared, and stayed for about an hour so far. Can I assume the updater is working it's way through the 1,500 song library, and that it may take a while longer? Or... have I broken the thing?
(I just completed an upgrade to Tiger from 10.3.9; iPod worked/connected fine before the upgrade, but not since then. Mounted on desktop okay, and launched iTunes, but never appeared in iTunes. The updater was an attempt to fix this problem, although I first downgraded iTunes to version 6.05, to no avail.)

To close the loop: I wound up having to "restore" (using the latest iPod updater) this iPod. Problem solved.

I downloaded the updater last night and the application is still open this morning with the do not disconnect symbol still on it (and the ipod)-- says can not interrupt- will close when process is complete. Is is supposed to take this long? Or do I have a problem?

Updating the iPod shouldn’t take any longer than a few minutes.
First of all, try clicking on the little x in the top corner, which might take you to the next stage in the process. Sometimes it gets stuck.
If this doesn’t work, shut down the computer, disconnect the iPod, restart the computer, run the updater again, and connect the iPod when prompted.

You can try this, don't think there are any Radio Shacks in Europe, but someplace should sell the same thing.

Each of my first, second, and third generation iPod Touch models are still working flawlessly. That's thousands of hours. Like Macs, they typically become functionally obsolete before any particular hardware failure ends their life.

Well the term "hotlined" I have never heard before. In any case many states (like NY) just passed regulatory powers to the State Public Service Commission of which it may be called something different in your state. You could file a complaint with them. Or file a complaint with your state attorney generals office, they also take on wireless providers.
The problem here is the staff you speak to are poorly trained, in days gone by it took one call to them and they pulled up your account and see the error and had the authority to remove any errors. They did not remove legitimate account actions, but used their heads instead of putting a customer off or worse lying to the customer.
Its a shame you have to go through what you going through.

I have a 160GB Gen 5 that I bought when first released back in the day when they were $400. Through a number of changes, the most recent being the advent of the Convert Higher Bitrate Songs to 128bit AAC feature, I decided to look at what more music I could store. After all was said and done, I ended up with a bit of a disaster with cover art not being properly applied to the music being played. I decided to *restore the ipod* based on suggestions in the discussion boards, and equally important was following the hints and tips here.

The advice is especially important in very large library situations to ensure you have uniqueness in the albums you want to display. Hadn't really given it much thought until I had the ability to see the individual albums for the 40K songs on the iPod via the cover art view.
Finally the point of the post...

At this point I've lost count of how much time it's taken, but the load is going on 3-4 days. With some breaks in between because I need to check each incremental load to verify there is no cover art corruption, correct bad tags and such, but for the most part the loading is visibly slow, and I'm sure the conversion is the cause. I'm not really complaining at this point, but there is clearly room for improvement. And of course unless there is a redo involved in which case I will get quite cranky.

Finally to lend a bit more credence to the performance concern, my 32GB iPhone 3GS for only about say 28GB of music takes about 24 hrs to load from a 2.2GHz dual core intel laptop, again using the convert higher bitrate option.

With AC power adapter it takes 3-4 hours for a full charge. With the USB charger it takes 9-0 hours for a full charge. I am not happy with them removing the AC charger and other accessoreis at all. It's business but it still stinks.
I know I would rethink my purchase but would most likely end up buying the Micro anyway

My update to iOS 5 took about 75 to 80 minutes. After the update I then had to update some aps and reload from the backup. When iOS 5 is being uploaded there should be some sort of status message in the top pert of iTunes. If this is not changing then I think you have a problem. If the status is changing, even of very slowly, then let it keep running until it's done.

After two hours, the update was still not complete - the status bar was stuck in the middle - so I left the update running and went to bed. The next morning, the update was finally complete, so it must have taken several hours. I have since installed an AirPort Extreme router - perhaps the next Apple TV software update will go faster! I Just got my ipod nano a week ago. I put maybe 10 songs on there and then today, since I had some time, decided to start creating my library. By the time I decided to stop and plug in my nano so it can update, i had like 219 songs that had to be transferred. I watched each song on iTunes go to the ipod like usual and then my list that comes up when you select "__ ipod" is all grayed out like it's still updating. On the top of the iTunes screen, it says ipod update is complete though, and of course, my ipod has been saying do not disconnect for the past hour and a half with the battery fully charged. Does it really take that long for it to finish synching my songs? I mean I know I had a lot of songs to put on there put geez!

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

Wow.......You plug the 30 pin connector to the botton of your iPad and the USB to the USB port on your computer.
But first, you can download the movie and books to your iTunes account without having your iPad connected. After you've downloaded the material, then you connect your iPad and sync it all over.
I'm sorry I have to sign off. I have to be up like 6 hours. I'll check in tomorrow and see if you made any progress.
If nothing else, this will get your iPad and your iTunes account speaking again. They should be regularly connected and your iPad routinely backed up.
One more thing. If it's been a while since you even opened iTunes on your PC, make sure you check for iTunes downloads and update iTunes with the latest version.
