After latest updates, cannot shut down or restart, takes me to white screen

I have a new MBP retina and after the latest Mountain Lion updates which I seem to remember including an iPhoto and Aperture update but also seemed to "flash" the EFI? (not sure), but there seemed to be some OS update included. Either way, my first initial issue was that when I clicked on my user account and typed in password after boot, it took me to a dark gray screen and just stayed there. I finally was able to log into guest account and switch over to my desktop then fiddled with resolution settings and background and shut down applications and rebooted. I can now log into my main user account but I cannot shut down or restart from any account. It will take me to a white/gray screen and hang there perpetually until I hold down the power button.
I've tried resetting PRAM before and after removing all cables for 2 mins. The issue persists in both my main account and the guest account. The computer simply will not shutdown or restart as it takes me to a white screen.
Ideas?

Hey guys, unfortunately I've had to re-install Mountain Lion to get rid of the issue, but here's my experiences after trying many things and contacting AppleCare...
First, I had Lion and had upgraded to ML. They had me go do the following with limited success:
1) Reset PRAM (no effect)
2) Recovery Disk and repair permissions (no effect)
3) Went to system /Library and User /Library and basically we went through several attempts at removing various files from (/Library/InputMethods, /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons") Once I had essentially removed every file and dragged it into the trash (without deleting), the issue was resolved. So, it seems to point to an application that was not fully supported or giving problems within the ML environment. The plan was to drag them one by one back and do reboot/shutdown until I could isolate the application, but rather than do that, I just did a fresh install to take out any variable that could be present from having to do a Lion/ML upgrade. I was able to put a fresh copy of ML on the computer through the Recovery partition after establishing connection to my router. Everything is working fine now.
Anyway, hope that helps some of you. It was a frustrating experience but seems to point to application issues wih the OS and not the OS itself. I think developers are still rushing to catch up with full ML support and so you might find yourself having many new updates in drivers or applications over the next month.

  • Macbook Pro cannot shut down or restart

My Macbook Pro cannot shut down or restart by any means. I have to forcefully shut it down by pressing the shutdown button for a few seconds.
I was told this might be a system problem so I reinstalled the OS X system but the problem not solved.
This is very troubesome as the system update cannot be installed (because the required restart cannot be done).
Can anyone suggest me what I could do next?
    Thank you in advance!
(To add on, my Apple manu seems not working as all. Not only the shut down/ restart function, but also the "About this mac" is not executing anything)

If this is happening now for the first time, press and hold the power button for a few seconds to force a shutdown, then press again briefly to restart.

  • Cannot shut down or restart

why cant i restart or shut down my new imac

Usually means one or more processes are corrupted and unable to shutdown.
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Problems may arise from corrupted preference or cache files.  You might try this as a start:
Boot into single-user mode.  After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it.  At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN after each commandline:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK."  If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
If you were successful then enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/*
    rm -rf /Library/Caches/*
    reboot
I suggest you print out the above to be sure you do not make any errors when entering the commands.  When in single-user mode you have 'root' access, so it's important that you not make any mistakes.

  • Cannot Shut Down Nor Restart in 10.6.2

OK, re-typing this message after yet another kernel panic. Why can't these browsers auto-save text that's being typed into fields in message boards? Ugh.
So my 10.6.2 will not shut down. I have followed AppleCare's advice and reinstalled 10.6 over itself, and re-updated to 10.6.2, but it did not help. Yet, a fresh 10.6.2 install on another partition boots just fine. Also, this problem partition was a fresh 10.6.2 until I did a Migration Assistant from my Leopard-based MacBook Pro. So I suspect there is some kind of problem extension or framework.
Here are the console errors that seem to be related:
    11/24/09 12:05:24 PM com.apple.WindowServer[97] Tue Nov 24 12:05:24 CheeseMaster.local WindowServer[97] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

Here are some of the things I think might be related, since they do not show up in the clean install:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKitDashboardSupport.framework (dated to 2007)
    /System/Library/Extensions/BJUSBMP.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext (removing this)
    /System/Library/Frameworks/Xerces-c-cw8.framework (really old, 2004)
    /System/Library/Frameworks/PrintMeSSL.framework
    /System/Library/Frameworks/swift.framework
    /System/Library/Frameworks/LAME.framework
    /System/Library/Frameworks/openquicktime.framework
The rest of my installed items are all Snow Leopard versions. Any ideas?

And I would note I did not bring the problem forward, but the Migration Utility did, which should know better, to be honest.
I agree that it would be great if Migration Assistant "knew" which extensions, frameworks, etc. would cause problems with a new OS version; however, this would require an enormous & comprehensive database of info about every one of those items ever created, including versioning info, components & their dependencies, & even checksums to verify that an otherwise good version was intact & not corrupt. And of course, Migration Assistant would have to check each found item against the database to decide if it was safe to migrate.
Well, what would be better is if programs were self-contained and did not store crap in a million places all over the hard drive. Would that be too much to ask? Why is it necessary for programs to have their frameworks in a "Frameworks" folder, and a bunch of stuff inside an "Application Support" folder? Why can't they just have it all inside the .app file itself? I've never really understood that. I can totally understand the need for a "Preferences" folder, and I can see the reasoning behind certain things needing "Extensions" and "Daemons" that reside in a "Startup Items" folder, but as for all that other stuff, what's the need for all that? Just curious, if anyone knows.
Now, if (as the case is now) these programs are going to be installing stuff in millions of places, visible and invisible, on the drive, then why isn't there something akin to the Windows "Add/Remove Software" control panel? Honestly, that's the one glaring thing missing out of OS X that, as a Mac user since 1984, I always find to be nice about Windows. On Windows, you can easily uninstall most programs through that one convenient control panel.
On Mac OS 9 or earlier, it was usually a simple matter of just dragging the application's folder to the trash. But in OS X, neither is the case; I recently tried to uninstall Parallels Desktop and Stuffit 13, to see if either was the culprit behind this -- and despite running the uninstaller utility for both of those programs, I'm still finding files and folders from both that should have been removed, but weren't, and remain stashed in weird places like /var/etc or /Library/LaunchDaemons or whatever.
Simply put, if Apple can't be bothered to create an equivalent to the "Add/Remove Software" control panel, then the least they could do is use some of the mega-riches they are raking in every second from the iPhone App Store and iTunes to hire someone to create the database that you are saying would be so hard to create. At least then the Migration Utility would be able to tell you what rogue items did not show up in its database of known software, and give you the option to quarantine it.
Obviously this is impractical. There are probably tens of thousands of these items, some of them so obscure that few people even know they exist. Some were produced by companies no longer in existence. Some have been produced in many versions, including betas or release candidates that were never publicly distributed. I doubt that any entity, even Apple, could produce the necessary database, & even if it could, running the checks could add hours to the migration process.
Like I said, the weird and esoteric stuff could just be quarantined. But at least then things from known providers like Adobe or Microsoft or MOTU or whomever would not get the axe.
Worse, even if all this could be done, it still would not be enough because some of these items are self-installing, for example on the first run of an application that "helpfully" installs a supporting framework or other components.
    Well, there ought to be some kind of system-level "firewall" already in place to prevent this; a LittleSnitch-type utility that would run silently and stop rogue programs from installing kruft into your Library. Perhaps it could present the user with a dialog stating, "The application, Kruftastic, wants to install KruftDaemon in the StartupItems folder in your main Library folder. Do you want to allow this? Note: KruftDaemon could not be found in the Apple Kruft Database, and could potentially destabilize your system." {YES} {NO}
Migration Assistant does what it can practically do, like not overwriting a newer version of an application with an older one, but aside from rule-based tests like that there isn't much else it can do if it is to remain useful. For most users, when combined with the built-in mechanisms of the OS not to load or run most types of incompatible software, this is more than enough to prevent these problems from occurring.
Does it at least generate a log saying what it copied in? Because that would help me a lot, I think.
But like it or not, when it isn't enough, it falls on users & the vendors of the software to find these things, especially if a "nuclear" solution is not acceptable. Remember that at some point you installed the software, not Apple, so you should have a better idea of what it might be than anyone else.
Oh, I agree on this. I mean, I already set up a secondary clean 10.6.2 install and that's my fallback right now. But I've got a lot of plug-ins and things like QuickTime Streaming Server set up that took me a long time to get all authorized and configured properly, and it will just be a huge pain in the behind to have to completely rebuild this install from scratch. I'm starting to wonder if I make a Time Machine backup of my system, and then recover just my apps and user onto the clean install, if that might fix things, but I feel like that will do the same thing as Migration Assistant and I'll waste another few days there.
You already seem to have made a good start at this by comparing installed items against a fresh, reference install. You can narrow down the suspect list by researching the suspicious items on the Internet & considering carefully what you have installed in the past that is out of date or unused but never uninstalled. Posting a more complete list of the suspect items may help, since some users may recognize some items as either OK or troublesome.
Yeah, I've been doing this for awhile but to no avail. I took out a lot of stuff, frameworks and internet plug-ins etc., that dated back to 2001 or 2007 etc. Some were PowerPC items. I also installed Rosetta since I read somewhere about a Rosetta problem causing the machine to freeze during shut-down, but installing Rosetta did not help. Nothing helped.
I mean, this install works perfectly other than the shutdown issue, and the fact that I'm getting a lot more coasterized Blu Rays than I was before. But I replaced a bad DIMM and got a CyberPower 900AVR that cleans the power to the machine, so I'm going to see if it's not coasterizing anymore Blu Rays. And I am slowly installing certain third-party things onto the other install and seeing if that causes it to start having this problem.
Regarding that, I can tell you that I have a BJUSBMP.kext in my system & it is OK -- it's part of the Canon printer package ("BJ" refers to bubble jet, I think). I don't recognize any of the others you have listed.
Alright, thanks for letting me know. Again, I find myself missing the old Extensions Manager, where you could click on an item and it would tell you what software package it was installed as a part of. I really don't understand why an OS that's supposedly so advanced, still isn't as good as Mac OS 9 when it comes to something as simple and basic as merely identifying a system extension to the user. I think this comes from overconfidence on the part of Apple that the user should never have to go into the system and troubleshoot anything (or if they do, then they must be a Unix Beard and they will not need any hand-holding). I never touched Unix before OS X, but I was a professional IT person working on Macs solely. Personally I don't think the OS should require outside knowledge to be able to maintain it. I think it should stand on its own.
And yes, I know this forum is not here for criticizing the OS or Apple's decisions, so yeah, I am CCing this to Apple's feedback area. But I do like to post things like this here, because I like to hear if I'm just crazy or if other users also agree that this should be changed or made better in a future Mac OS X version, or if you know of a third-party utility that accomplishes the same feat. Pacifist is the closest thing I've been able to find but its limitations are too inhibiting.

  • After what seems to be a normal upgrade to the new Lion OS. My computer counted down to restart and left a white screen with only a file folder in the center of the screen with a ? in it. How do I get my screen back to normal? Jim L.

After what seems to be a normal upgrade to the new Mountain Lion OS X on my early 2008, 24" iMac. My iMac counted down to restart but did not turn all the way off. At the end of the count down the screen went white with a small file folder flashing on and off in the center of the screen. Also there is a ?, question mark in the miaale of the file folder. The screen responds to no keyboard or mouse commands. Request help.

My computer was doing the same as yours hinikuru but now there is a change. I turned my iMac off by the button on the back and left it off for about an hour. When I just turned it on the center Apple logo was back and soon the  loading logo for the new Mountain Lion program came up. On the bottom of the logo there is a horizontal sliding bar that says the program will take 34 minutes to load. Time will tell. I have two iMacs and if this goes we'll I will install the new Mountain  Lion tomorrow. Hinikuru, I was about to follow the information in one of the side bar blocks titled "More like this" on the right side of this screen when my iMac seemed to fix itself! Good luck. I think not all is lost.

    Hi,
You may have a corrupt catalog.
I would first try to repair and optimize your catalog.
Load the organizer while holding down the shift key - that should open the Catalog Manager.
Select you current catalog and click on the Repair button
When that has finished, click on the Optimize button
When that is done, click on the Cancel button to close the Catalog Manage
Which operating system are you running on?

I can't restart OS X Tiger 10.4.10. I can put the computer to sleep and if I want to shut it down too, then I have to use the power button.
    Any solutions?

Insert your Install CD/DVD, unplug the thing, then hold the c key down when you start it again, you've got some corruption somewhere, once booted from the installer, you'll see a Menubar show up after one step, choose Utilities?Disk Utility, the Repair the HD, if it can't then stop & get back, if it does then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

Backup and restore your software via iTunes. If the problem continues, restore as a NEW device. If this solves it, that means there is some corruption in your backup file. If the problem is still there, you should take it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • RMBP 15 won't shut down or restart - cannot update software

    Hi,
For about the last 3 months I've been unable to shut down or restart my Macbook Pro (retina) 15", OS version 10.8.2.  Additionally, selecting 'Restart' or 'Shutdown' from either the Apple menu or when an application wants to complete in update still results in the system doing nothing.  I've left it overnight after selecting 'Shutdown' from a menu and it's been running in the morning - so definitely not a slow shutdown problem.
I have gone through the recovery mode process to reinstall the OS, repaired disk permissions, run a Safe Boot, run Onyx and a number of other things.  I even removed the com.apple.dock.plist and .dock files as suggested elsewhere (I have many of the lsboxd messages in my console), I even disabled the notification center... but the problem persists.
I was running Sophos AV for a while and removing this didn't seem to improve the 'unable to shut down' issue, but I am no longer experiencing system freezes every 2-3 days.
I haven't found many helpful events in the Console.  I did check the install.log, and I have the following event each time I select 'Restart' to apply an App Store update:
SUAppStoreUpdateController: prepare for root mode with 041-xxxx...
It seems that usually I can 'sudo reboot', however there are times when the system is unresponsive even to this so I end up having to hard power-off using the button.
I have also been unable to get Boot Camp to work despite following the apple.com support manual - a bootcamp partition is mounted in OSX but I am unable to select it to install Win7 or boot to it.
As I don't live near an Apple store my options to visit a genius bar are limited.  It is frustrating that not only is Mountain Lion on the rMBP considerably slower to boot or recover from sleep than Lion on my 2011 MBP13, but I'm now unable to update any software that may fix the issues I am having.
Are there any suggestions as to how I may be able to resolve this problem?  Has anyone experienced something similar?
I would be most grateful for any assistance.
    Thanks,
    Discom

    Hi softwater,
Thank you for the suggestion.  I haven't looked into Carbon Copy Cloner previously, I'll check it out.
I'll see what I can do about getting to a store.  I've only just had the MBP13 get a logic board replacement, for which it had to be in store for a week, so I'll have to make plans to move data around so I can keep working while it's out of action.
I won't be able to take it to a store for at least another week, so if anyone else has an (unlikely) solution in the meantime I'd be very appreciative!
    Thanks

  • Cannot shut down restart or log out

    Hi,
My new macbook pro cannot shut down restart or log out. When click shut down restart or log out. it does NOTHING. no screen comes out, no window telling me that an application is stopping the shut down, just nothing. After I try several times to shut down, I can continue using my macbook normally as if I didnt try to shut down at all. What should I do? What is wrong?

What happens when you press the power button? It should bring up a dialog box asking if you want to Restart, Sleep, Cancel, or Shutdown.
Also, try it from the terminal prompt. The Terminal application is in the Utilities folder. The Utilities folder is in the Applications folder.
    Once you've launched Terminal, type:
    sudo shutdown -r now
Enter your login password when prompted.
    This should initiate a reboot.

  • I tried to reload my Ipod touch.  I accidently selected "start new ipod" icon on the Ipod and then "back up existing ipod" on Itunes.  Now the Ipod is unresponsive, constantly shutting down and restarting.  Even after multiple "forced" shut downs.  Help!

After updating the os, I tried to shut down, clear and reload my Ipod touch.  Here's where I goofed:  at the prompt for starting the reload process, I selected "start as new Ipod" on the Ipod, but in Itunes, I selected " back up existing Ipod from computer" or something like that.  Now the ipod is constantly shutting down and restarting and no controls can be accessed.  All I can do is the "forced shut down" which I have done multiple times and let sit for a half hour off.

Disregard,  hooked up to itunes and clicked on summary, selected restore, all is well.

therfore my mac (powermac G5, OS 10.4.11) is unable to restart, no possible action from the keyboard (I must shut down and restart)
is it a known problem ?

I have zapped the pram (5 times)
I have reformatted the hard disk
I have reinstalled all properly (with full updates to 10.4.11)
there is no more problem with classic (il was probably caused by spoiled files)
    but the suspension problem persists
it appears that it is probably not the hard disk suspension but the system suspension that is problematic :
when I set preferences so as to accept disk suspension as often as possible, but so as to avoid system suspension (set to "never"), there is no problem
does it exist a specific hardware use to manage suspension and reactivation, and is it tested in apple hardware test ?
