After Leopard upgrade, computer starts up fine but gets stuck at finder

I've upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. Everything went smoothly in the install. When the computer first rebooted and finder appeared, everything worked great. Then I opened my email and it asked for the keychain to be 'reset'. I clicked reset and then waited. After about 30 minutes, the 'rainbow wheel' was still spinning and everything appeared to be frozen. I couldn't even opt-command-esc, so I pressed the reset button on the G5 tower. Then I booted from the OSX disc and checked the hard drives with the utilities program. Nothing wrong apparently. I then reinstalled the OSX 10.5 again figuring that might help. When it restarted, the system got stuck after all the apps & finder loaded with the spinning rainbow wheel again. This time the hard drives or any other files did not show up on the desktop, and its been spinning for a long time now. I can also hear the hard drives working quite hard in the tower.
A bit of background info: before I upgraded, my old Tiger had a problem with the keychain access and wouldn't save any of my passwords and wouldn't reset properly. I had also ran a disk verify on it and found a few errors which I had actually forgotten to fix in the older system. Would this be the root of the problem? What should I do now? Will I need to do an archive and install? I really can't lose my user settings, email, address book, etc. Is there a way to save these and back them up? If so, how and where are the files located? I have two hard drives in my tower and several back-up firewire & USB drives if needed.
Thanks,
Clayton.

Before you go the route of another install, try a couple of basic maintenance steps.
First reset PRAM. Hold the 4 keys Apple-Option-P-R while rebooting until you hear the SECOND startup chime.
When you get to the log in window, don't log in. Just Shut Down the computer.
Now do a Safe Mode boot. Hold the "shift" key while booting until you get the spinning gear on the gray Apple screen. Be patient, this will take a while. Eventually you will get to a log in window with a notation that you are booted in Safe Mode. Again, just Shut Down the computer.
Now try to boot up normally and see if things are working better for you.
PRAM holds copies of certain system settings for rapid access and if it gets out of whack all sorts of strange things can happen. A Safe Mode boot does various maintenance steps in the background as it boots up.
If your account keychain is screwed up, you may be able to fix it by doing a First Aid from the Applications / Utilities / Keychain Access application.
Alternatively, you can boot directly from the Leopard install DVD (hold the "c" key while booting) and then use the utilities in the menu bar to enable the "root" account and give it a password. The details are here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306876
After logging in as "root" you can use System Preferences / Accounts to create a new user account. If logging in to that account seems to be working properly then the problem is limited to your original account. You could diagnose that further or your could copy your personal stuff to the new account, set preferences the way you like them, and, eventually just delete the faulty account.
EDITED TO ADD: Ah! I see you found a more direct solution. Good.

  • After installation trying to start the portal but get credential error

    Hi
I download the SAP Portal 7 and installed it as typical installation on Win XP. During the install it was asked from the wizard to put the master password. I did it and the installation was successfully finisched. Trying to start the server from the administration console i was asked to authenticate and put the username and password. After typing of the credential data i get in a message box: "invalied credential, start faild: 2"  and the start of the server fail. I retyped and even reinstall the Portal 2 times to be sure that i do not make a mistake by typing the master password but each time i get the same error!!!!!
I installed it later again as custom installation and step by step put all neccessary passwords and the result was the same
Please help to resolve this problem and get the portal a start

I did a factory reset on my late 2008 MacBook from a Snow Leopard disc. It installed fine, but as soon as I began to use the computer (safari) it froze. Couldn't even force quit. So I held down the power button to turn it off, and now it won't start up. It goes to the grey Apple screen and just sits there loud as can be. Help! Please keep in mind I've not done anything like this before and am going to need a little hand-holding. Thanks in advance.

Hi. Don't worry it's nothing serious. Insert the Instal Disc (Snow Leopard) and press the C button while turning on the computer. Once you see the desktop, go to Utility and choose Disk Utility. Select the Macintosh Partition on the left window pane and then click on Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on the bottom right corner. Wait for both processes to finish. Click on the Apple icon (top left corner) and choose quit. Your computer should restart. See if it reboots normally. If not you can always reinstall the OS following the same steps. Good luck!

  • After Leopard Upgrade, HDTV No Longer Displays Full Screen Apple TV??

Fairly recent Apple convert. iMac is directly connected to HDTV (Mini-DVI to HDMI) and A/V Receiver(Toslink). After Leopard upgrade, I now have a black border, on HDTV, no matter what resolution I choose (worked automatically and perfectly on Tiger). In System Preferences-Display, I am mirroring the displays and have Overscan turned off, because without it, the Menu Bar does not display at all. I am wondering if Apple is trying to force me to buy an Apple TV or if maybe I just need to be patient until the correct drivers come out? Apple told me they were referring my problem to the Engineering Department, but I am not holding my breath. Primary need is to view Photos and eventually rent movies, when HD is readily available. Any opinions, predictions or suggestions on resolving would be appreciated. Thanks!!

same issue here. Don't use it very often so could not remember if it was fine previously thought it was. Hope we get help soon.

  • After IOS8 upgrade IPhone5s syncs with exchange but IPad2 syncs ONLY Mail and Contacts, NOT Calendar.  Totally stumped. Ideas anyone?

After IOS8 upgrade IPhone5s syncs with exchange but IPad2 syncs ONLY Mail and Contacts, NOT Calendar.
Also, my other tablet - Samsung TabS - has same issue - calendar wont sync. My IPhone and my desktop (windows) synch just fine.
Google calendar syncs on all devices. Totally stumped. Ideas anyone?
    THANKS

    1.      Log onto Outlook Web Access
    2.      Top right hand part of the screen select "Options"
    3.     Select "See All Options"
    4.      Select "Phone" menu
Check if you have 10 Devices registered.
If you have, you need to delete one of them to add your new Smart Phone to Exchange for synching
Check the "Last Sync Time" to indicate if this device is still active or not.

  • IChat no longer connecting to Jabber server after Leopard upgrade

Just upgraded to Leopard yesterday, and the only significant glitch I notice so far is that iChat is now getting stuck in the "Connecting..." step when I try to get onto our Jabber server (which was working fine before the upgrade). Am now getting a "untrusted certificate" message now, which I also didn't get before, but I can continue and it does try to connect but gets stuck in doing so every time.
Have tried tweaking the jabber account server settings, but to no avail.
    Sound familiar to anyone?
    Cheers.

Hey! SO i was having the same problem but I discovered what was wrong. Actually I don't know what the problem was, but the solution to this is...........
    1. delete your old jabber(google) account
    2. add a new account, and then on the "type of account" there is a new one called Google Talk Account, and obviously pick that option !
    3. enter username and password and BINGO! it works

  • HT201263 My iPhone 4 started to update but got stuck in recovery mode. I've tried everything anyone on the website has told me to do, but nothing has worked. Is there anything I can do? I need my phone

My iPhone 4 started to update but got stuck in recovery mode. I've tried everything anyone on the website has told me to do, but nothing has worked. When you go to turn it on, it shows the Apple symbol,  then it goes to the connect to iTunes screen. When I do that, it just says error with the code 9006. I've followed what the Apple site has said to do for it, but the phone is still is the same  state. Is there anything I can do? I need my phone back as soon as possible.

    Hello Hester Emily,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you're experiencing after this update process.  I found the following article that has more information on the iTunes error code 9006:
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Configure your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006, 9807, or 9844. Sometimes as a result of this issue, a device might stop responding during the restore process.
Check your security software and settings, which can block ports and prevent connection to Apple servers during update and restore.
    Take care,
    Alex H.

  • HT1338 After I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I cannot get my external speakers (Bose) to work on my iMac.  Any help?

After I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I cannot get my external speakers to work (Bose).  What can I do to fix?  They worked fine prior to upgrade.

If you haven't already, go to your Applications folder>System Preferences>"Sound">click on the center tab labelled "Output">highlight your external Bose Speakers in the list by clicking on it>turn up the Volume slider at the bottom of the window.  Hopefully that solves your problem.
    Hope this helps

  • I can't update my iPhoto 8.1.2, everything says I need to upgrade to 9.0 first - but i can't find 9.0

I can't update my iPhoto 8.1.2, everything says I need to upgrade to 9.0 first - but i can't find 9.0.  I upgraded to mac ios 10.9.3 but I'm trying to use iphots in icloud and it says my iphoto needs to be updated first.  I just can't figure out how to update it.

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1

download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use the free trial's rebuild command to create a totally new library leaving the existing one untouched for use as needed in the future

  • Download All on Playlist begins to download, but gets stuck

I have various playlists in iTunes that I created on my Macbook.  Some are manual, some are smart playlists.  I recently subscribed to iTunes match and I'd like to download all the songs from a couple of these playlists onto my iPhone 6 so I don't have to stream them when I'm not on a WiFi network (i.e. in the car).
    To reproduce:
On my iPhone, I open the music app
Navigate to a playlist where I see at the top a button to "Download All (XX songs)" and the cloud download icon.
    Tap the Cloud icon
The songs that have not been downloaded have an icon next to them that changes from a cloud to a spinning circle.
Some songs begin to download, changing the icon again, this time to a download progression indicator, but most songs never make it past the initial spinning circle and remain that way indefinitely.
If if tap on the spinning circle next to the stuck song, it initiates the download.
The songs that are stuck do not show up in the Downloads section of the iTunes app while the songs that are downloading do show up there.
This is fine for a few songs, but when I have a playlist with a few hundred items that just "spin" and won't download, this is ridiculous.
Attempted solutions that have not worked:
Closing the Music app and opening again.
Closing the Music app, closing background processing (flicking it up, off the screen) and opening again.
Turning off iTunes Match from my iPhone, waiting until the music has cleared off my iPhone, then turning it back on.  (This actually created other issues as it tried to redownload thousands of songs at once.)
Signing out of iTunes Match on my macbook, waiting, then signing back in.
Soft resetting the iPhone (Holding HOME and POWER) until it restarts.
    Background:
There does not appear to be a correlation between a 'matched' iTunes song and an 'uploaded' one.  Some matched songs have downloaded, some haven't.
Smart playlists and manual playlists are both affected.
The playlist seems to know instantly how many can be downloaded.  When I tap the Download All cloud, the number of songs listed in parentheses next to "Download All" immediately drops to a lower number (if it drops at all), then will not progress any further.
If a song exists in multiple playlists, it may download in one but get stuck in another.
Any ideas at all on how to fix this?  Maybe an iOS bug?  I'm running iOS 8.1.2 on an iPhone 6.  Maybe something in my account?

I am having this problem and i could not have explained it better myself.
I have been a iTunes match users since launch and this is the first time i have had this issue. It only seems to be the problem since updating to 8.1.2 because i have no issues downloading whole playlists last week right after i had purchased my new iPhone 6, which was running 8.1.1.
I guess we can only hope to have this issue resolved with a new update, however iTunes Match seems to be becoming increasingly neglected in its support, and continues to be remarkably buggy. Fingers crossed for a fix soon.

  • I have an hd movie on both my ipad and iPhone 5, using airplay with my iPhone 5 plays perfectly but gets stuck with my ipad 2, almost like its buffering? I just want it to play smoothly like with my iPhone. Any suggestion?

I have an hd movie on both my ipad and iPhone 5, using airplay on my apple tv with my iPhone 5 plays perfectly but gets stuck with my ipad 2, almost like its buffering? I just want it to play smoothly like with my iPhone. Any suggestion?

About 6 months ago I discovered iTunes was set by default to 720p. These MUST BE CHANGED TO 1080P!!!!!!!!.......So I installed FULL 1080P file on my laptop on iTunes...  When I download movies on iPhone 5s/iPad mini the file is 720p So within about 60 seconds of starting download of 1080p files into my laptop of iTunes purchases. It was at that moment that I realized it was that file my laptop has on file to sync to my Apple device...Ten minutes later when the first 1080P HD file was downloaded  I must say... The resolution is amazing... I now use this same process to install movie files from iTunes.. In FULL 1080P.. Not 720P... Works on my iPad mini also... Avatar is 5.4 GB if installed over Wi-Fi... However sync with laptop and file is 6.5 GB in size... Called Apple told them... No reply yet.... You must delete 720P files from your laptop... Look for file size in any movie purchase and you will see DOWNLOAD IN 1080P.. This will open preferences in iTunes for you to the correct tab so you can change setting to 1080p from default of 720p... DELETE any downloaded movies already downloaded into laptop... You can check file quality by right click on any movie folder and the look at movie info... Will say 720p HD... Delete to recycle bin and iCloud will appear on each movie... Now download 1080P HD file... When completed. Right click any file to verify it is 1080P HD... The sync with device...... And get ready to be upset with Apple for holding back your device for the last 2 years 3 months and 16 days......And be ready to catch your jaw from hitting the floor when you see your screen in full 1080P HD.... Apple Engineer's were asleep.....
You will notice better pic quality... Apple by default is still sending the 720P file to the new iPhone 6 plus over wifi and sync.. howve this process above will give you full HD file for your Apple device...

  • Hi, I'm gringo to download Apps that Hades already bought, and also new ones but get stuck on a "waiting" signal forever and that I can't manage to delete.

Hi, I'm trying to download apps some new, other that I had erased, but get stuck on the wheel and a sign that says waiting and nothing happens. Can't even erase the sign. What can I do?

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.

Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
    If that doesn't work:
    •  Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
    • Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
    • After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

  • My macbook will not start up. It gets stuck on the page with the apple and the pinwheel. Can anyone assist?

My macbook will not start up. It gets stuck on teh opening page with the apple. It was working fine and all of a sudden i cant get it to work. Does anyone know what could be wrong with it? Or, is there a bypass to the start up page?

You won't lose your files unless something goes very wrong -- which may already have happened. You absolutely must have a backup before you do anything else. If you don't already have one, boot from your installation disc and follow the instructions in this article under "Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility":
