After Lion install Macbook shuts down by itself

At random times My Macbook just shuts down for no rhyme or reason.  Then I have to wait for a few minutes before it will turn back on.

After upgrading to Lion, my computer overheated and I had to have my graphics card replaced.  It's happening again, and I'm using a fan control program to keep my system cool.  This is a bandage and I'll be asking Apple to look into this because there must be something wrong with Lion.
I have done the resets, both the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM.  No effect, and that's true for the original video card and the new one.
I'm tempted to use the Firmware Restoration, but will wait on Apple support.
I have an iMac 24" from ~2006.  It's worked like a charm until Lion.

  • My macbook shut down from itself

    hi
after i upgrade to mountain lion my macbook pro shut down from itself when i'm searching or doing somethin (weird proplem)!
idk what's the proplem is it because i opened more than 2 apps (which i think it's a silly proplem if it's in the mountain lion)
or because i connected my iphone 5 wirelessly with my my macbook!
apple needs to fix this proplem, it happens everyday to me!
    what do you suggest?

    Hi,
Try a hard reset of your iPod:  Press/hold the *home* and *sleep/wake* buttons until the Apple logo appears.
    Hope this helps!

  • Macbook shutting down by itself, and very hot when being used

    Hello!
My 2009 Macbook has me worried. When I put it in sleep mode and plug it in, it shuts down by itself at some point, so every time I go to use it again, I have to turn it on as though I had initially shut it down. Also, the bottom of my laptop is very hot.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I am so grateful for your input!
I am just outside of my Apple Care warranty coverage, unfortunately.

  • Download went smoothly, but install is hung up on quitting open applications. Won't allow this to happen. What can I do? I can't quit the Mt Lion install to shut down and start again. I'm stuck.

Earlier, I downloaded Mt. Lion (currently using Snow Leopard). Download went fine but to Install, something seems to have hung up with quitting open applications. Keeps telling me to do that, but each time I hit the blue button to quit open applications, won't do that. I've tried quitting anything open in the dock, still says I need to quit open applications. Tried quitting Install for Mt. Lion so I could restart and try again. Can't do that either. What to do now? Any help appreciated.

CMD+OPT+esc should bring up the Force Quit Application. Select the Install ML app, and click Force Quit. That should do the trick. Then, save yourself some grief and copy it to a safe place because the ill-designed installer deletes itself during the installation process, necessitating wasting resources DLing it again if you need to reinstall or recover it.

  • Emctl shutting down by itself after a while

I just got 10.1.0.3 installed and a 9i database converted. I can get the Database Control started (emctl start dbconsole) and use it, however, after a while emctl shuts down by itself. Below is what occurs in emagent.trc just before emctl shuts itself down - apparantly gracefully. All help appreciated

SathThere is but a more important question is why does it quit every few days. Solve that problem and you'll be more ahead than with the solution you asked or originally.
You can put the program on a timer and have ti launch every so often; you'll have to have it check to see if it's in memory when you do and if it is, then close the launcher and just let the previous running instance continue.

  • MacBook Shuts Down After Unplugging Powercord Although Battery is Installed

    Hi,
Whenever I disconnect the power cord of my MacBook, the OS shuts down within 2-5 seconds. The battery is installed and it has a 80% health and it has 185 charge cycles. I've been experiencing this strange behavior after two days of installing (Secrets Preference Pane). But I'm not sure if it was behind the problem. I even uninstalled Secrets preference pane but the problem still exist.
At first I though the battery is dead, but for some reason I tried running the laptop later on the battery power and it ran for whole 2+ hours until it was fully discharged. I then charged the battery fully and used it again and it was working like a charm. But later the problem returned and the MacBook shuts down whenever it is not connected to the power cord. If the battery was dead, then how come it runs without a problem sometimes? also the health indicator shows that the battery is 80% healthy and the charging cycles is not much and whenever the system shuts down, the indicator on the bottom of the battery shows that it is fully charged.
I don't know what is causing the problem, and why sometimes the problem arises and sometimes it goes away.
I am using a 2007 white MacBook with the original battery (provided with the laptop). I am running Mac OS 10.6.2.
I tried several solutions such as:
    - Cleaning the battery and MacBook ports.
    - Resetting the PRAM.
    - Fully discharging the battery and then fully charging it.
But it seems that I am not able to resolve the problem. I would appreciate any provided help.
    Thanks,
    shaknon
Note: Here are two pictures that shows stats about the battery:
    1- http://jump.fm/SAOBW
    2- http://jump.fm/JBHYI

I am having identical issues as you described - although I haven't installed secrets preference pane (so I doubt that's involved).
My problem went on for hours one night, I got sick of dealing with it and went to sleep with AC adapter unplugged and macbook off. The next day, it worked fine all day long. Now here I am in the evening - had a power cut, AC adapter went off obviously, and MacBook powered off. Again now I have this problem.
I tried everything you've talked about (PRAM reset) as well as SMC reset, no change. My battery stats look great, says battery is healthy. This started happening to me a few days ago, I upgraded to 10.6 a few weeks ago.. not sure what caused this to start happening.
I found one VERY interesting thing, maybe you can check this: when I have the problem, with AC adapter unhooked, when I try to power up my MacBook it comes up for 2-5 seconds (sometimes until the apple tone, sometimes not), and turns off. If I HOLD THE POWER BUTTON for 5+ seconds the MacBook remains on, the white light on the front flashes, and I get a long tone. This procedure is supposed to be used for firmware updates or something. Anyway, when I do this, the computer comes up perfectly and it uses the battery. When I hook an AC adapter up, that works, but as soon as I unplug it I am back to the same problem. You should try this and see if it works for you, it may be a clue. If nothing else, it's a good way to still use your laptop if you are on the go and can't be dead in the water
My wife has a MacBook slightly newer than mine, I'm going to try her battery when possible to see if that solves the problem. I hesitate to go to the genius bar as they are terrible where I live and it's always been a waste of time
(Also, the battery update fails for me as well).

  • Macbook Pro shut down by itself at 16%

I was using my month-old Macbook Pro as usual, and it suddenly shut off by itself. It had 16% battery when it happened, and wasn't plugged into the power adapter. I tried to turn it on again by pressing the power button at least 3 times, but nothing happened. So I gave up and tried to use my iPhone to find out what happened, but it suddenly turned on by itself. I heard that the Macbook tends to do a thermal shut-down whenever it's overheated or something (I'm not sure if it's true though) , but I'm still very concerned because I just bought it only a month ago! Here's some information about my battery that I've got from the system profiler:
    Battery information:
      Model Information:
      Serial Number:          W01174C7KD3LA
      Manufacturer:          SMP
      Device Name:          bq20z451
      Pack Lot Code:          0
      PCB Lot Code:          0
      Firmware Version:          201
      Hardware Revision:          000a
      Cell Revision:          165
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          1397
      Fully Charged:          No
      Charging:          Yes
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5400
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          19
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          3542
      Voltage (mV):          11881
    Operating system: OS X Lion
Is this normal? I really hope it's nothing serious because this is my first Macbook after so many years of using a PC - I'm enjoying using the Macbook Pro and I don't want any reason to change back to a PC. I'd appreciate if anyone can help me!

    Just an update:
After it shut down by itself a second time, I couldn't even turn my Macbook on for a period of time even when I pressed the power button. After that, the Macbook did start up for about 2 or 3 seconds before shutting down by itself today. However, it was fine when I turned it on today, so it's working as per normal now. I've run some antivirus software, and nothing was found at all.
I hope the additional information will give you guys more idea as to what's happening. I'm glad it's working now but I'm concerned that it will happen again so I really want to resolve it, yeah. Do you think it might be a problem with the new OS?
Thanks for your help so far!

  • My MacBook shuts down without warning.  Recently installed snow leopard.  Battery is fine. Any ideas?

My MacBook shuts down without warning.  I recently installed Snow Leopard and increased my RAM/Memory.  My battery is fine.  When I took it to the Genius Bar and they ran a diagnostic, nothing showed up.  It appeared fine and did not shut down during the time I was in the Apple Store.  Of course, once I made the two-hour drive home, my computer shut down within two minutes of using it.  Any ideas?  Do I need a new computer?  This one is about 5 years old.

Sounds like a buggerd battery chip. If the MacBook turns off at a certain percent all the time, then your battery's status chip is damaged and is (quite literally) lying to Mac OS X.
If it is actually hitting 0%, then temperature could be an issue or a there may be an issue with the battery itself.
My advice: you may need to get a new MacBook as a new battery for 2006-model MacBook may be hard to come by (and defintiely no warranty support from Apple).

  • MacBook shuts down after low battery warning

    Hi,
up until recently my macbook's battery has been working just fine. but then lately i noticed that a few minutes after it displays the low battery warning it shuts down by itself.
before, when the low battery warning would display i could still continue working on my macbook for several minutes until it goes to sleep -- only then would i connect it to the power cord.
unlike the other posts (concerning batteries) that i've read, i have no problems turning my macbook on/off before or after this event has occured. neither does it shut itself down when the battery is halfway. my problem really only happens after the low battery warning has been displayed.
i wanted to calibrate my battery but then that would require my macbook to go to sleep once it reaches a battery level of less than 5%-10% -- mine just shuts down completely.
is this shutting down thing a substitution mechanism to save the laptop's memory -- instead of going to sleep, it'd just shut down?? how can i fix this?
thanks in advance for the help.
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   512MB, 2GHz Intel Core Duo

For what it is worth, I now have the same issue. Only I don't even see the low battery warning, it gets to 15% or 10% and bang, no power. This is not good, by the way and is bound to corrupt something in the system as OSX requires some house keeping when you shut down the computer properly. This instant off is not a proper shut down. I took my MacBook in and they wouldnt simply replace the battery, they want to keep the computer and give it back to me in a few days. I rely on this puter for work 5 days a week, so I was trying to avoid this.
Oh well I guess a trip to the Apple store is unavoidable.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Mountain Lion. There's a Mountain Lion Support Community where everybody has Mountain Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mountain_lion
You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010.

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

My macbook shuts down after 5 - 10 minutes, and I have to restart it each time. Can anyone help me with this? I've tried resetting the PRAM, re-instatlling the OS, switching HDD's. I asked a friend of mine what it could be and he said it may possibly be the power switch button. Any answers out there?

Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That is a good first step for power related issues such as this.
If that doesn't do it, you are looking at a hardware repair.
    Best of luck.
