After Lion upgrade Hard drive permission denied

Hi
I upgraded to Lion last night (from Snow Leopard) and everything seem to work perfectly. This morning I noticed that I can not save files to the root of the internal harddrive (called Macintosh HD) on my iMac. When I go to Get Info on it, my user name is not listed in the permissions list. There's System, Wheel (whatever that is?) and Everyone. I tried adding a myself or even a new user but nothing happens.
Thankfully I can save to existing folders on my hard drive, which is stange. When I get info on these folders, my user name is listed with read and write permissions - all is normal.
Is this some fiunky new Lion feature, or has something messed up during installation? Can I fix it?
thanks

This seems to be a feature - despite the permissions indicating that I can read and write to the root folder of the start-up disk, I have to authenticate before copying files to it.
I 'restored' the internal HD to an external drive as a backup using Disk Utility, and that too was locked - it booted-up OK and worked exactly like the internal HD when it was the start-up disk. However, booting-up gain from the internal HD I found that I could not copy any files to the external disk at all, not even to the folders in my cloned home folder - I don't even get the option to authenticate.
When I replaced the backup using Carbon Copy Cloner the external drive was not locked and I can copy other back-up files to the disk.
The locking seems to be a feature of the install/restore. I would guess that, as with hiding the ~\Library folder, this is designed to protect critical folders from foolish acts, but it seems like overkill to me.

  • Can't access/mount hard drive, Permission denied message in Disk Utility.

    Hello,
Need some help here. I was upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5. I got an error message when I tried to upgrade from the DVD. My hard drive had an exclamation mark by it and I was told I would need to erase it in order to install. When I tried quitting the installer, I had to go through startup disk to pick my Hard drive, which showed it had 10.4 installed. When I tried restarting, it would only boot off of the DVD. I checked startup disk again, but my hard drive was now not visible. I have a tower with a back-up system on it. When I picked it, it started up fine. I went under disk utility and the hard drive is listed, but is ghosted/grayed out. Repair & Verify Disk permissions are ghosted back as well. When I try to repair or verify disk, it says it can't it gives me the disk number and sector number and Permission Denied. I poked around on disk utility for info, and it looks like it doesn't have a mount point anymore and under permissions, it says that they are not enabled. So, apparently the access privileges have been erased & I don't know how to mount my disk again. I'm assuming I need some sort of commmand line in Terminal to restore my priveleges or get it to auto-mount. I do not want to erase my drive to upgrade. All my applications are on that drive. Please help!

  • Time Machine lost all backups after Lion upgrade

After Lion upgrade TM asked me to perform a 13 hours backup; I've agreed but now the oldest backup is 3 days ago. What is happened?
    Please can somebody help me?
    Thanks

I can't help here, but before I upgraded my old G5 (OS 10.5.8) TM popped up a message saying that old files had just been deleted. That was what TM does when its HD is getting full. But this was strange because I knew that I had lots of TM space, and since the last use of the conputer (about 2 hours before) I certainly had not saved to the internal HD several GB of files. To my astonishment, all but the last 4 weeks of files had been deleted, back to Jan 2010! GetInfo said that the space left was about the same as before the incident, whereas it should have shown a huge amount of free space.
I deleted all the remaining backup files and started again. It shook my confidence in TM's ability ot provide a reliable backup system. Now I regard it as a useful source of recovering old versions of files (eg., text, images etc.), rather than as a means to restore the system hard drive. Fortunately, I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner for years to make bootable backups of the whole system HD which can then be used, by simply cloning back to the system HD, to get back to work using the state of the HD when I last cloned. Alternately, the clone on the backup disc can be simply examined in the Finder to recover individual files.

  • HT201250 How to recover iPhoto Library after format of hard drive?

I've recently reinstalled Lion onto my hard drive but I forgot to backup my iPhoto library. Is there any way of recovering this library? I also have an external hard drive that had Time Machine Backups but that hard drive has since gone through formats as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

SOLUTION : iPhoto folder recovered after formatting hard drive by mistake.
I was able for recover my iPhoto library ( intact ) after formatting the hard drive by mistake.
On top of that I formatted it in FAT32 format. My iPhoto folder was huge 100GB with file and movies of all sort of formats. I kept it on a secondary hard drive of 500 GB. one day I was formatting flash drive for somebody which was 500Mb, seems similar to my 500GB and I formatted my hard drive by mistake. I realized the mistake a week after the person called me and said there is nothing in flash disk and I find a single file on my hard drive. Needless to say the earth disappeared underneath me. All my pictures for 10 years , 8000 thousand of them, cherished memories all gone. But was I determined to find them back and I know they are intact somewhere. My biggest fear was that formatting on MS-dos format might have really deleted them , but they were there. and here is how I got them back.
First I tried the Data recuse 3 software. I got the photos back,  but they were all jumbled up. Long numerical file names and original dates were gone. No way I could sort it out back to the way it was before . So my target was to recover the iPhoto folder intact.
    - I bought an external hard drive with 1tb space to retrieve the data.
    - The software which did the miraculous job is called  " STELLAR PHOENIX MAC DATA RECOVERY" .
    - I ran a deep scan all night and came up with many volumes.  volume-1 was the MS dos , volume 2 was a mac system,
    - I tried MS dos volume first and there was nothing on it.
    - I tried the 2 volume with mac system. It got all my files and some other system file.
    - I could see the iPhoto folder and click on that only to recover. After that I went for my doc and other files later.
    - It took hours to retrieve my iPhoto folder intact, The folder size was right and file were there in master folder.
    - I checked in FINDER , opening iPhoto with "show content " and all my picture file were there with original date.
    - BUT when tried opening it in iPhoto , there was nothing. it keep showing the wait icon and nothing shows up. Empty iPhoto.
    - I tired starting iPhoto , holding command -option and tried building and repairing database, nothing worked.
    - Then I got this software " iPhoto library manager" .
    - downloaded, installed it and pointed it towards my iPhoto folder.
    - It asked for space to rebuild a new iPhoto library with existing picture and folder.
I had another external hard drive , I used it to make a rebuild  iPhoto library.
and there I GOT IT. only took three night of pain.
    IMPORTANT:
I never touched my original formatted hard drive. Don't write anything on it until you are sure you have recovered everything. open and see files with your own eyes.
    - I recovered the iPhoto on another hard drive and then built it on another hard drive . Yes its pain in the neck but well worth fixing your stupid mistake of not making a back up in the first place.
I hope this helps all who are looking for iPhoto recovery and their lovely memories.

  • Upgrade hard drive or buy external drive?

My MacBook has a 100GB hard drive, but because I've got so much music stored on there, I've only got 7.5 GB of free space.
I'm looking for advice in choosing between the following options:
-Upgrade the internal hard drive to the 200GB model. This would cost $300+ to have installed, but is a slightly slowed drive (4200 vs 5400)
-Buy an external hard drive and simply keep my music on that. But I'd have to have it with me everytime I want to access my music.
So is it worth the extra expense of getting a larger internal drive?
Thanks in advance for any comments.
    Scott

    Why not both?
Ideally, you should have external backup anyway, just in case of a hard drive failure. After having 2 hard drive failures in my MacBook, I'd dare say you'd be a fool not to have external backup.
Make sure to get an external drive with two FireWire 400 ports (for daisy-chaining). Seagate makes good ones, or you could buy a hard drive and an enclosure and make your own, but something tells me you're not the type.
Make a read/write disk image of your internal hard drive with the Disk Utility and save it onto the external drive.
How about you buy the hard drive, and pay me 100 bucks to install it? LOL. You could do it yourself, it's really not that hard. I just did it today, in fact.
Take out the battery, unscrew 3 little phillips screws, take out the panel, grab that white tab to the left, slide it out, move (unscrew) that little metal thing to the new drive (you need one of the fancy little hex thingies to do that) slide the new one in, screw her back up, and boom, you're good to go. Hey, but if you're not comfortable doing it, then don't.
Now, the hard part is getting all your data back on the new internal hard drive all at once. I found out today, you may need a second Mac to do that.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=888330&tstart=0
Okay, so maybe I'm a bit more daring than the average Mac user, but oh well.
    Hope that helps.

  • Upgrading hard drive... need help on how to prepare current CS6 for reinstall on new hard drive

I'm about to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one and will need to reinstall my CS6 Web/Design Suite... I've seen many people having issues with activation and licensing after they reformat their computers or buy a new one and try to install the programs on the new "system". How should I go about preparing my Adobe software on the current hard drive so I won't have any issues resintalling on the new hard drive? I will be installing CS6 Student/Teacher version on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit...
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks!
I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)

  • I DVD Soft Frame template issue after Lion upgrade.

Hello, I've just updated my os to Lion but the Soft Frame template in iDVD, (7.1.2) is no longer working correctly. The light coloured background which covers the right hand side of the frame is missing and has been replaced with black. This issue effects sub menus as well. Existiting and new projects using Soft Frame suffer from this problem... Any ideas would be gratefully received! I have tried re installing iDVD but this had no effect.

OK I fixed it, sort of. The .tif file which provides the background image had disappeared. Even deleting IDVD and its themes and re-installing didn't work. So here's what I did:
    1) Make a new background. This can be any graduated colour field which you can make on any paint programme such as GIMP. However I grabbed the background from the `Forever' theme which is beige and adjusted the hue to turn it from brown to the blue which was close to the old 'Soft Frame' backing.
Here's how to find the 'Forever' background:
Go to your hard disk and look for Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD7/Forever-Main.theme
CTRL click on it and select `Show Package Contents'
Expand the contents folder and then the resources folder and look for the .tif file marked Forever-Background.tif
Drag this into your photo editing programme and change the colour to what you want.
Save the new file as tpt.tif on your desktop (there is a reason for this filename)
    2) Replace the defective backgounds in the `Soft Frame' themes
Go to your hard disk and look for Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD7/Softframe-Chapters.theme
CTRL click on it and select `Show Package Contents'
Expand the contents folder then the resources folder and look for the file marked tpt.tif and delete it
Drag the tpt.tif file you saved to your desktop into the Resources folder
Now do the same thing in Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD7/Softframe-Extras.theme
And do the same thing in Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD7/Softframe-Main.theme
Next time you launch iDVD it will pick up the new backgrounds.
It took me about 10 minutes.
Now I've found where the backgrounds are stored (if you select Project...project info in the iDVD menu the media pane lists the full path) I realise it is easy to put your own backgrounds into any of the existing projects.
    I hope this helps.

  • IMac freezes after lion upgrade

Upgraded imac from SL to lion, and now the computer freezes when waking from sleep or switching accounts. I have no issues during the process of using the computer. I have installed new RAM (4gigs), reinstalled the OS, erased the HD (securely) and rebuilt from back-up, pram, disk utilities, disk warrior. Read in one post that this may be the logic board and that Apple may be replacing these in certain modles. I never had the computer freeze when I was running SL, and I am a school IT guy with over 100 macs running SL and this does not happen at school. I have heard from others of the same thing once they go to Lion but the Apple Store says they have not heard of it!  Do not see how this could be a hardware thing since it looks to happen after Lion upgrade.
    Any ideas

I did do the above as I read that may work too, I also made it so the HD never sleeps.  Did not help for me, computer still freezes when switching accounts, not all the time, on average every other day I need to do a hard restart.

  • Im new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experincing a hard drive crash out of the blue, I lost everything. I want to make sure this doesn't happen again. I show backups for my iPhone and my daughter's iPod but my mac doesn't exist. How do I fix tho

I'm new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experiencing a hard drive that went out of the blue, I lost everything. I wanted to use the icloud to back my documents up. I went into the iCloud under settings but it only shows my iPhone and daughter's iPod. How do I get my Mac to back up too? Is there something I need to use to have the documents back up?

You cannot back up your Mac to iCloud. Even backing the whole thing up to another online service would be dubious because it would take a very long time. You should buy an external hard disk and back up to that - even better, buy two and use one to make a Time Machine backup and the other to clone your Mac from time to time, thus giving you a backup from which you can boot in an emergency.
If you wanted to back up a suitably sized selection of data to an online service there are a number of third-party methods available, some of which are examined here:

Time capsule no longer will back up after lion upgrade is anyone else having this problem?

The Time Machine application is part of the Lion operating system, so you will likely get a faster and more informed response if you post in the Lion support area for Time Machine. There are a number of posts there with issues similar to yours.
    Mac OS X v10.7 Lion
Click on the Refine This List button under the Lion and then click on Time Machine to get to the support area.

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.

I have a seagte back up plus. I pulled my hard drive out without ejecting it and now finder dosn't find it but I see it in disk utility (although I cant repair permissions) How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?
Thank you so much for any help

In Disk Utility you need to see a volume or partition in addition to the drive.
If all you see is the drive, then when you ejected it you proably corrupted the volume or partition on the drive.
If that is true then your chances of getting anything back are slim at best.
About the only thing I know that might work not is to send the disk out to a service for recovery. This is going to cost like $$$$.
Is the data worth that much?
