After Mavericks installation USB extern hd won't let the system shutdown

after the Mavericks installation my UBS extern hard drive won't let the system shutdown or restart.
If I unmount the USB HD and shutdown from apple menu or keyboard combination(control+eject key) then goes system down but without unmount shows just grey display with cursor and never go out. And the after the key combination control + eject then i can see the login field with restart, shutdown button then i can click shutdown button the system goes down. What do I have to do?

Bump.
Lots of people are having this issue with no real good answers. I hope apple devs are reading the blogs and get us a fix for this quick. I had this problem after upgrading to mavericks, then I did a clean install to mavericks and still have the same issue. I already miss Steve.

  • Serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220.

Experiencing serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220 1TB. Mac Finder totally locked!
I had to format the External hard drive with a Windows PC (fat32), then format again with my IMac (mac Journal.) and hopefully restored data from time machine backup.
So far so good but system looks unstable. Some software were not able to write on the hard drive. Some strange things happens. With Mountain Lion never had an even minor issue.
I read many discussion regarding problems with WD, just wondering if anyone had the same problems with Lacie and if there is any tip to solve the
    problem.
    Many thanks.

Thanks very much for your reply.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a solution because the article refers to whom have configured the drive with included software and drivers that came with the drive.
This is not my case, I never used any third party soft ...only OS X disk utility ...

  • External Moniter Won't let my Powerbook Shutdown

i have a 15-inch 1.67 GHz powerbook. 1.5GB of RAM, an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700: 128 VRAM and an 80GB HD. I'm running 10.4.6 and am up to date on all of my software updates. My problem is that i plugged in an older Sony flat-screen monitor using the DVI-VGA adaptor that came with my powerbook. It worked fine until i tried to shutdown my computer. The computer shutdown then re-booted as if i had clicked on the restart button, i tried again no luck. I unplugged the monitor and it shut down. I then booted up again and plugged the monitor in and i couldn't shutdown. I then was able to shut it down by holding down the power-button for several seconds. This worked, however i tried to turn the computer on, and no luck until i unplugged the monitor. If anyone can help me with this that would be great. The only thing i've installed in the last couple days in Garage band Jam pack Symphony Orchestra thats it. If anyone has any idea's they would be greatly appreciated.

I can't speak for the PowerBook, but it is probably due to the fact that most computers built recently have the ability to boot from a USB drive. Essentially, the computer sees the shuffle as a USB drive and tries (and fails) to boot from it.
I had the same problem with my USB thumb drive and my computer. Set the BIOS to not try to boot from USB drives and fixed the problem.

  • Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro

Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro.
It started with Photoshop, then Safari, and now the Kinect sensor.
Mavericks is the worse thing that happened to me I have a thesis project to work on!
    What can I do?
How can I remove Mavericks and go back to Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

    Hey StephSassine,
First, I would run through these steps:
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk:
    Increase disk space
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10677
If that doesn't work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility:
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.
Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check.
    Click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
via: Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5821
If that doesn't help resolve the issue, you can revert to a previous OS X version:
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version

  • Windows 7 disappear from bootcamp after  maverick installation

Windows 7 disappear from bootcamp after  maverick installation. What should I do to recover?
I did try co reinstall windows but it make the installation new (nothing remain from the previous). Old windows partition seems lost.

Hi Jack.........ok ive managed to create a link to that video on how to install bootcamp.....this is the tutorial i used and i managed to gain 100% completion on bootcamp 1st time no messing......like i said in my previous reply did you save the windows support files from apple....(Critical).....ok no point in messing about i suggest you start again from scratch........these are the things i used and YOU will need to complete bootcamp
mem stick or cd-r / dvd-r......original copy disc of win 7 ...i never used an iso i used original disc....allow a minimum of 30gb of space for your win 7 partition.....if you want bootcamp so you can use big programs like windows based games i.e.....Crysis/Call of duty etc etc ..then you will need to consider that  you will need to allow a bigger partition to allow your HD to store the files.....this is the reason i installed bootcamp and so i made my partition    i have a 750GB HD so i made a partition of 300gb for windows 7 and left the other 450gb for Mac....so you need to partition enough for what you want bootcamp for remember once you get bootcamp working you will need to install ALL Important Windows updates Including Win 7 SP1......once everything is installed you will have bootcamp up and running lovely.....u can then boot up with either win7 or mac......click this link and watch carefully and do exactly as shown ok and you should be fine...if you have any probs contact me again ok.....let me know how you get on ok..:)...http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=QFIWtXTl4d0&NR=1

All I can suggest is to reinstall Windows, see link below on how to order recovery media for your model. You will have to reinstall Ubuntu after using the recovery media so back up your files to an external drive. You can order HP recovery media below, or call HP on the phone to order 1-800-474-6836

Why did you wipe the drive?
    Were you having problems?
If you were those problem may be related to a failing hard drive and that is why the TM backup could be restored.
In you topic header you say the system won't boot from the SL DVD, But it di for you to wipe the drive. Then it should again boot from the SL DVD.
Insert the DVD and reboot, hold down the Option key and select the Optical drive, SL DVD, as the Boot source.

  • Clock won't keep time after Mavericks installation

My clock no longer keeps time properly after installation of Mavericks. This problem affects all of my iMacs immediately post-Mavericks, so it's not an issue with a bad battery.
The symptom is: The clock drifts by about a minute per day. Clicking the Date & Time applet in Settings immediately syncs the clock to the correct time. So the NTP servers are obviously working. It's just that Mavericks doesn't make use of them to set the system clock unless the Date & Time applet is clicked.
I followed the advise here and used the UI to set multiple time servers. I used the recommended string: 0.us.pool.ntp.org, 1.us.pool.ntp.org, 2.us.pool.ntp.org, 3.us.pool.ntp.org
After having made this change, instead of the clock losing thirty seconds per day, now it gains one minute per day.
As you can see from the log, it executes a few time syncs correctly and then just stops. The last sync was executed back on 1/17/14 at 4:40pm:
Apparently the problem can be solved if the user knows Unix and can actually recompile parts of the operating system. This is way beyond my level of expertise.
Bottom line: Apple's OS releases have gradually been getting worse and worse and Mavericks' quality is degraded to the point where even basic operations like keeping track of time are apparently now impossible without in depth Unix & compiler knowledge. This is pretty much the last straw for me and I'm reverting back to Windows and that horrible Metro interface (it's ugly and impractical but at least it can tell time). But I can't switch out all of my iMacs overnight. I have to deal with Mavericks for a while longer. Is there a workaround to get this wretched OS to tell time properly without having to deal with cryptic Unix commands and OS recompilations?

I didn't want to recompile ntp or start messing with system files that would end up getting overwritten on the next system update, so here's the solution I came up with.
I have a cron job running every 4 hours.  In terminal, type
    crontab -e
then, on the first line, type:
    0 */4 * * * sudo /usr/sbin/ntpdate -u time.apple.com
(make sure there is a carriage return at the end)
This will sync your clock to the apple time servers every 4 hours. I have my cron set up where it actually e-mails me, so I've been monitoring the output, and have been adjusting more than 1 second each time it runs, which means I've been losing 6 seconds per day with this bug. That's bad even for a cheap alarm clock from WalMart.

  • MacBook continually reboots after Mavericks installation

Tried to update OS to Mavericks. Installation was completed, however the computer now continually restarts at random times unless I start up in 'safe boot' mode.  OS before update attempt: 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro. IT is currently wiping my computer clean and reinstalling OS from disc. Don't want to go through this again, but we're updating some other software that apparently requires the OS update.
How should this update be installed? I was told (too late) that I should be updating to 9.0 first, then do the software update to 9.2, does this really make a difference and how can I be sure that I am downloading that version and not 9.2?

How should this update be installed? I was told (too late) that I should be updating to 9.0 first, then do the software update to 9.2, does this really make a difference and how can I be sure that I am downloading that version and not 9.2?
No, that is not correct. 10.9.2 is the version you will get when you download Mavericks. See below:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • Computer is very slow after maverick installation

I downloaded and installed maverick 10.9.4 last week, and my MacBook Pro (early 2009) has been running very slowly ever since (and only in Safe Mode).
I have read through several discussions that others have been having, and tried some of the recommended solutions but my machine is still not running well.
I have noticed an EtreCheck report is often requested and I will copy that report below (This was run while computer was in Safe Mode, again the machine is not functional unless it is in Safe Mode).
    Some general observations:
Web browsing causes the computer screen to flicker until the web page has load, then it stops until I move the mouse or try to click on anything at which point it starts to flicker again.
Using programs (microsoft, adobe, ect.) take a little longer to load up and save but generally seem to respond to typing in a normal way.
My battery will not charge past 80% (this is new since installing maverick) even while plugged in. The machine hibernates normally and when it does battery life appears to run down at a normal rate. I mention this because I'm guessing some system is running inappropriately, draining the battery, and perhaps slowing the machine down???
Again all of the above are in Safe Mode. When the machine is not in Safe Mode, it takes about an hour for the machine to load to the point that my docking station, clock, and desk top icons appear. After this nothing progresses past the rainbow wheel of death. I have not been able to open a file, folder, or application.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Problems with iPhoto after Maverick installation

After 'free' :-) installation of Mavericks, iPhoto doesn't work...
When I take a look in the App Store I recognized
that It isn't possible to update my Version of iPhoto..?
I bought iPhoto two years ago and I'll not buy it again - the same programm.
    I need help!
    Chris

    This is the current message:
The Photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • Mavericks mac usb external display help

I have read several reviews that say there are some usb external displays that don't work with mavericks. I really wan't to have another monitor besides the one out of my thunder bolt cable. I understand that i need to update my drive and that might be why the reviews are the way they are they did not update there drive. I would just like help finding one that i could use. Thank you

I believe most if not all USB display adapters use the 'DisplayLink' standard. If so I would suggest going to the following page and reading the details about Mavericks support.

  • Unable to access/modify wifi after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro

I've just installed Mavericks OS X on my 2011 MacBook Pro. Although quite slow, everything seemed to go smoothly during the installation process. Once booted up in the new OS, I noticed immediately that I had no wifi connection on the device. I am unable to enable/disable the wifi, and more troubling, any attempt to make changes to Network settings seems to freeze up the System Preferences application. Once this occurs, the machine is basically useless. A series of restarts, shut downs, safe-mode boot ups, etc and eventually I was just getting a blank grey screen after startup (no login screen, mouse visible and working). At this point, I booted via the recovery partition and did a full re-install of the Mavericks OS X. Not surprisingly, it did not fix any of the problems.

Very strange problem (no surprise to you).
I suggest you reset the SMC (and PRAM, if you are able). That cannot hurt and might help.

  • Battery drains after Mavericks installation

    Hello,
My Macbook pro, early 2011, seems consuming double battery power since the installation of mavericks.
I discharged the battery completely and fully recharched it but the problem remains.
Before installing mavericks the battery lasted for at least 6 hours depending of the system charge.
Even if the battery remaining time show much more, since the installation of mavericks the battery doesn't last any longer then 3 hours:
To save some battery I also disabled bluetooth on my system, but it doesn't help.

    Below my energy saving config:
My MB goes into sleep mode as configured in the energy saving config.
When i close the lid, it is definitely going in sleep mode.
I'm verry sensible to noise, so I can hear when any ventilator blows or if the hd is moving.
Anyway, the reduction of battery life is when continuously working on the system (so no sleep mode in between).
Your remark concerning Sophos is pertinent, but it was already present before installing mavericks.
It may consume a little bit, but it doesn't seem the problem when I look at the cpu.
I'll try to reset the SMC but if that would cause the problem I should have certain phenomena that aren't present for the moment.
A fan continously blowing, video card not switching correctly, or any other issue that could consume power.
I can say that I'm pretty conscious of how my system works and what could be wrong, but this time I don't get it
    Thanks for your help!
    Greg
