After Migration to new Mac Pro, intermittent slow downs, SROD's

I started with a my intel mac mini, Leopard OS was installed on an external Firewire drive, most applications were installed on another partition of that same drive. I bought a new mac pro 8 core, and an additional firewire external drive that I set up as my Time Machine drive on my old mac mini. I did a full backup of my old mac mini system and then attached the time machine drive and the other external hard drive to my new mac pro. I used the migration assistant to transfer files to my new mac pro. However, now there appears to be something occuring between my internal mac pro hard drive and the old external hard drive from my mac mini. When using some applications, Itunes, Logic Pro, Firefox, the ap will hang and appears to be trying to access files from the old external drive. I hope I'm being clear with what the issue is. I'm thinking duplicate files on this external drive and my internal drive are causing some problems? I need to know how to repair the issue, and preserve my data files?

Thanks for your quick response. I know I've been somewhat confusing here. I'm running the latest Snow Leopard update on my mac pro now.
Then please update your profile, as it still shows the mini and Leopard.
And I'll ask a Host to move this to the Snow Leopard > Time Machine forum.
All the aps and data were migrated onto the internal HD in the mac pro, and the aps and files and directory structures, etc. are still also on the external drive that used to comprise the OS of my mac mini. I'm thinking that may be part of the issue, but I'm new to Mac and not certain of that or how to fix the issues.
Depending on how you did that, I'm not sure everything on those partitions got on to the new Mac's HD. Check that first, via the Finder.
Let's start with iTunes and/or iPhoto.
First see if you have the same stuff in both places. Use the Finder to see how large each is on the external HD, and compare that to the iTunes and iPhoto folders on your internal HD.
If they're not on your internal HD at all, use these instructions to move them:
Moving your iTunes Music folder
Moving your iPhoto library
If the versions on the external are newer than the ones on your internal, delete the ones on the internal and use those instructions to move from the external to the internal.
But don't delete the versions on the external just yet. Eject and disconnect it, and make sure everything's fine. It won't hurt to leave the data there for a while, especially as long as it's disconnected.
If the music or photos on your HD are the same, or newer, hold down the Option key while starting iTunes or iPhoto. That will give you a prompt where you can select which one you want to use.
Once you've selected the ones you want, eject and disconnect the external. Then use as many apps as you can, to see if everything works properly and all your data is found.
Without knowing what other apps you have, and how they work, I can't tell in advance whether any others will be looking for the external drive. If you get error messages, you'll have to deal with each app that seems lost.
I'd be inclined to keep the old external "on the shelf" for quite a while, just to be sure nothing got missed.
Have you started doing Time Machine backups of the new Mac yet? When you do, you'll get a prompt about whether to "re-use" the Mini's backups. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. You probably want to select "Re-use," especially if there's a considerable amount of space on your TM drive.

After migration to a new Mac Pro Dreamweaver CS6 won't launch. It says it is missing menus.xml file. How do I resolve this?

    Hi rustyg12,
    Go to Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS6/Configuration/Menus/menus.bak
You'll see a menus.xml there - it is a backup copy of the actual menus.xml file that DW uses.
Copy it from that folder, paste it 1 level above (in Menus folder).
Fire up DW. See if it works.

If you are syncing using iCloud, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (computers) and checking Safari. If it is checked, try deselecting it, wait 10-15 seconds, and then check it again.

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.

  • HD problem after connecting to new Mac Pro

Went to our first MUG meeting of the years tonight. And took along my Lacie 500gig firewire external H/D. This was going to be used to demo the new iTunes 7 app. The computer being used was a new Mac Pro duo core intel etc.
When I plugged the H/d in to the Firewire 400 socket on this machine it would not mount. So sadly the demo would have to wait for another meeting.
MORE SADLY.... when I returned home and tried to connect it to my 15" iMac it would not mount..... What has happened??
It is more than obvious to me that my hard-drive has been corrupted by trying to use it with Apples latest entry into the market.
I have swapped cords Ports etc. The drive does power up when I start the computer and sounds like it is going to mount... Profiler does not show it...
    any help would be appreciated...

Seems that I have a solution.... It would seem after some troubleshooting that the FireWire 400 port in no longer working.... why? I can only guess. The other FireWire 800 and USB 2 ports are fine.... Thankfully I am still in the warrantee window....
Let me say that this is the first and only problem I have had with Lacie H/D's....other than ...."Make sure that you initialize it before adding any files to it"... I know it is supposed to be Plug & Play with Mac, But I am betting it will think it is connected to a PC....unless you take the initializing step...

  • My mac pro is slowing down? what can i do?

My Mac Pro is slowingh down. any suggestions what can be done?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Chann|GPU D|I/O' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.
If you get output like any of this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
    kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info End **
    kernel[0] <Debug>: NVDA(Private): Channel timeout!
    kernel[0] <Debug>: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout!
there's a fault in the graphics processor or logic board. The two kinds of output are not mutually exclusive, but if you get both, a logic-board fault is likely.

I wanted to know what to do about or what is causing the error that i have been randomly getting on my new mac pro, purchased about a week and a half ago. My computer will randomly shut down and when i get it to come back up it says something along the lines that OS tiger shut down uexpectadly. I know it cant be to out of date software beacuse i updated it all.

    This does sound odd.
I've seen bad power supplies and overheating CPU's do this.
I recommend you place a service call as this issue may be hardware related.
If it turns out not to be hardware related, no harm done.

  • I can't find my data after migrating to new MacBook Pro

I just finished migrating data from an older model MacBook Pro to a newer one both using OS 10.9.5. After the migration I can no longer see or access my backups on Time Capsule. It may be a permission problem. Any suggestions?

After the migration I can no longer see or access my backups on Time Capsule.
You have a new Mac. Have you been backing up the "new" Mac?  If not, that Mac has no backups...yet.
You do have backups of your other "older" MacBook Pro though.
You cannot "add on" or "continue" backups of the new Mac onto backups of the older Mac.
If you want to see the backups of your "older" Mac.......right-click or try control-click or option-click the Time Machine icon on the dock and select Browse Other Time Machine Disks

Try Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers and if that doesn't help see Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers
Apple support has been pretty good in the past suplying new serial numbers with the bare minimun of documentation.
    good luck

  • Files not found after migration to new Mac

    Hi,
On my old Mac, under Snow Leopard, my installation was complete and everything worked fine.
Then, when I bought a new Mac (with Mountain Lion installed) I had to use Migration Assistant to restore my Time Machine Backup, which included my Logic Pro installation.
Now when I try to use Logic Pro I often get these "Audio file ... not found!" messages (see example).
    How can I fix this?
    Many thanks!

Thanks for the link! Instead of un-installing and re-installing everything, I noticed that in GarageBand (which I normally don't use) there was an update/additional download available. After doing it I noticed that this had fixed nearly all missing-audio-file-problems in Logic Pro: when checking for missing instruments by creating a new instruments project everything was complete again on 2 of our 4 Macs (pre 2012 models) -- on the other 2 Macs (late 2012 models) only the following 3 ( ! ) files are missing:
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/...
    .../Seventies Kit/DC Tit Hat 08.aif
          (of EXS24 Instrument "Seventies Kit.exs")
    .../Liverpool Bass/IL Btl Bass bomb 08.aif
          (of EXS24 Instrument "Liverpool Bass.exs")
    .../Steinway Grand Piano/Steinway Pedal V1/Stw ped v1 024.AIF
          (of EXS24 Instrument "Steinway Piano.exs")
So we copied the 3 missing files into the same directories on the 2 newer Macs, but it seems Logic doesn't "see" them and therefore still says that they are missing:
How can I help Logic to find these files?

  • Migration to new Mac Pro

I am ready to transfer to my Mac Pro and know there are a lot of options...however, I have accumulated many apps & junk I don't want.
I do however want all my photos, music, email, Safari settings and accounts/documents and a lot of compatable Apps soooooo...is it better to do a total MIGRATION and then delete what I don't want or only transfer what I do want up front - and if the latter...what is the best way to do so??
    thanks
    eric

Migrating from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac can be very problematical. I would definitely not migrate your entire system because you will end up replacing Intel specific software with PPC software, thus rendering your new Mac quite dysfunctional.
A safer solution is to only transfer your personal data files such as your Music, Movies, Pictures, Sites, and Documents folders located in your Home folder.
If you have third-party applications I recommend you reinstall them after upgrading them to universal binary versions wherever possible.
You can also copy the /Home/Library/Mail/ and /Home/Library/Safari/ folders to their respective locations on the new computer. You can do the same with your /Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ and /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal/ folders.
The following has more information on migrating to Intel Macs:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Lost access to Jam Pack instruments after migration to new macbook pro

I just migrated to a Macbook Pro and now all the instruments from my Symphony Orchestra Jam Pack are no longer available. I was also getting a message "Native Instruments Installation Folder not found" but after copying the instrument files into the Sampler Instruments from my old macbook to the new one, that went away, but I still don't have access in Finale to those instruments.
There's still no "Native Instruments Installation Folder" that I know of, but the message no longer appears.
Are these instruments no longer available in the new Garageband? This is a bit frustrating.

I FIXED IT!!! After AppleCare told me it couldn't be done...
I've been searching for hours online and couldn't find this anywhere, so hopefully someone with this challenge will stumble upon this.
    A clue was here: http://www.techvide.com/apple/install-jam-pack-on-mac-os-x-lion
but this didn't correctly describe my issue with an early version of Jam Pack 4: Symphony Orchestra
    What I did:
    1. Insert Jam Pack DVD 1
    2. ctrl-click Install Jam Pack 4 - Show original
    3. double-click JamPack4_Instruments.pkg
    4. You'll get some Power-PC Not Compatible with Lion warnings (only a few compared with the almost infinite number if you try standard install)
Instruments now appear and work just fine in garageband. <big sigh>
I wish AppleCare would know this, and I hope someone is planning on continuing supporting these Garageband instruments.
