After MobileMe Mail update june 18, email quits after checking for new mail

on jun 18 2010 a All-new Mail update & Find my iPhone update on my iPod Touch has changed something alright. After checking for emails (me.com), the visual feedback hour thingie stops turning and then the email program on the iPod Touch quits. Restarted the iPod Touch but no change. Even if I can open an email, after 1 second the program quits. I have removed the Find my iPhone application but that did not fix the problem. This problem appeared AFTER the update. I removed the application Find my iPhone / iPod Touch because that program could not find my iPod, since I am working abroad.
Must I reset the iPod Touch to factory defaults and load it again? Then find out if it works ?

After receiving no tips on how to tackle this, I decided to just delete the email profiles on the iPod Touch and build from scratch. Since I use more than 1 emailaccount on that iPod Touch. It seems (so far) that the local Internet Service Provider with it's email settings is responsable for the crashes on iTouch. It checks an awfull long time for mail. On the Desktop computer iMac 20, Apple Mail program works ok. So maybe the new version is more critical about certain protocols. (?)
Anyway I deleted that emailaccount on the iPod Touch for now.

  • Mail Quits when Checking for New Mail...Please Help!

Hi, everyone. I just upgrade a Powerbook to Tiger and Mail 2.0.5. I have set up a new account, but for some reason, every time it tries to check mail, it crashes! When I bring up the activity viewer, I can see that it's logging into my mail server, and reading the number of mail messages. It then begins to download the first piece of mail, and starts applying the rules. And that's when I get the crash and the "mail has quit unexpectedly" window.
I've already deleted all rules and turned off the junk filters, but it still continues to do it. I've also tried trashing the mail preference file, to no avail. I am at a frustrated loss here. If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance...
    Bill

    Hi there,
Yes, I've had the same problem with Mail quitting whilst downloading new mail for around a month. I called the Applecare line and they advised me to re-install Mail. I felt this was alittle drastic as Mail worked perfectly in every other way so I didn't take their advice.
However, thank you so much - your advice of turning off the Junk mail filter worked perfectly and in an instant my Mail works perfectly again.
    Thank you!

  • Mail "hiccups" every few moments, seemingly while checking for new mail. e

Every few moments, if Mail is up and running, which it always is, it "hiccups". This is disruptive enough to throw me out of an email that I might be reading, causing the message window (the lower window) to go blank.

This problem is not solved for all cases.
This solution only applies to server-side filtering/redirecting of messages into imap folders.
I'm having trouble with client-side mail.app rules moving new messages into imap folders and not having the new message counts displayed.
This wasn't a problem in the previous version of mail.app.
Here's to hoping that Apple posts a patch to fix this problem soon...

  • Mail forces "include when automatically checking for new mail"

I have two fully updated Leopard machines and a .Mac account through which I sync mail accounts, etc.
I primarily use IMAP to check mail, but I have some POP accounts set up in mail so that I can sometimes send mail from a different account. I uncheck the box on the advanced tab in Mail Preferences that says "Include when automatically checking for new mail." I have checked the box "Enable this account" which allows me to send the mails on a case-by-case basis.
The system works quite well when it stays in this mode. But sometimes the system forces the box to be checked on the POP accounts and it downloads mail that I don't want (this mail gets routed to the IMAP accounts anyway, so I wind up getting it twice).
I cannot figure out how to stop this from happening. I have made sure both machines have identical account setups. I have forced synced from one machine with the proper account setup to .Mac, then force synced from .Mac to the other machine to ensure they were equal. But it keeps happening anyway.....
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

For the purposes you have these accounts, both deselect (as you have done) Include when checking for new mail, and take the account Offline. The latter does prevent sending with the account, but will stop the undesired downloads. I have found the need to do both of these things at least since Mail 2.x and Tiger, and possibly since Panther.

  • "Include when checking for new mail" option not working

    Hi,
I have 2 email accounts set up on mail, but I only want 1 of them to pull down mail (the other will only be used for sending). For the account I don't want to get mail I deselect the box "include when checking for new mail".
However, Mail still pulls down messages from that account. When I put in the correct server settings for the incoming, it pulls all of my mail (in this case gmail), and when I put in bad settings (as a way of avoiding getting the mail) I get an annoying error message.
Does anyone know of a way to make that function of Mail work?

    Hi feuerstein.
How have you set up the Gmail account in Mail (POP, IMAP), and under which circumstances does Mail check for new mail on that account? More info, please.
BTW, Mail doesn’t automatically check when launched every account if Include when automatically checking for new mail has been turned OFF. That happens with IMAP accounts only (and only if they’re “online”), not with POP accounts, but it isn’t clear at all whether that’s what you’re talking about...

  • Mail constantly checks for new mail; downloads same emails repeatedly HELP!

For the last three days (since 19th), Mail has been downloading the same emails over and over again. I first noticed a problem when about 20 spam emails that usually route to my Junk folder appeared in my Inbox. I thought I had just moved it incorrectly and deleted them, then they appeared again later.
The mail jogger cycle (next to Inbox) keeps turning and turning like it can't stop checking for new mail. How do I get it to stop?? The emails are multiplying like gremlins in my Inbox and driving me nuts!
Also, it only downloads new emails when I first open the app. I have to force-quit out of Mail, then reopen, and I will get a couple of new emails, and then ALL THE EMAILS FOR THE LAST THREE DAYS AGAIN.
Mail was working fine for me until three days ago. The only thing I've changed recently is a Software Update on the 15th for QuickTime and iTunes.
Please help! I tried to Repair Permissions and it didn't do anything. I also tried removing all messages from the server and that did nothing either.
    Mail Version 2.1
THANK YOU ANYONE WHO CAN HELP ME!!

UPDATE: I think I got it to stop checking mail. I have Yahoo mail and I checked my email through online Yahoo. I was able to delete a bunch of emails and it suddenly stopped checking for email in the Mail app.
HOWEVER, it will NOT remove some of my junk emails. I was able to delete over 100+ of them. But one specific message (which I now have 8 copies of) will not go away. It is one of those 'Delivery Status Notification' emails. Is this a virus??
I've tried Erasing Deleted Messages and Erasing Junk Mail. Neither helps. These emails won't go away.
Help please! I would be very grateful.

  • Since updating to Mavericks, Mail doesn't work properly.  It just stops working (no error messages--it just won't check for new mail) and I must shut it down and reopen it to get it working again.  Any suggestions?

Try to force quit the mail app
Double tap the home button. When you see the app previews on the screen scroll sideways if needed to get the preview in question on the screen. Flick that preview up and off the screen to close the app. Single tap the home button or home screen preview to exit the mode.
Failing that, go into the settings, mail, contacts and calendars and remove your account info then put it back in and see if that works

  • Mail not checking for new mail after sleep

Mail will not check for new mail when waking from sleep unless I log off and back on first. I tried quitting Mail, which works once in a while. I tried putting all Accounts back online, which works occasionally. But most often nothing works except logging off. Must I change to another mail program, or is there a better solution.

After trying various solutions, I found that the fault was not with Apple Mail or my iMac but with Airport taking time to warm up after sleep. I switched to an Ethernet connection instead and it works fine now

  • Email not checking for new mail

hi, my email has stopped auto checking for new mail ( as it is set up to) , and will only do so when i quit and restart the program
if i hit get mail while it's running, nothing happens
i can see new emails via .mac but will only get them if i quit and restart mail
also now the rules and i have sometimes work and sometimes don't
i tried sending myself test emails, and there is long delay between sending and receiving it ( about an hour )
    thanks

    hi there
    it's .mac
we did try removing the .plist file, and it made no differnce
i am getting increasingly frustrated by the mail app, it's never been a particularlty good example of MAC software ( not very stable ), but now as well as unexplainable lulls where all you can do is watch spinning clock faces ( despite having a fast broadband connection ) , i'm also having to deal with sent emails re-appearing as drafts, even though they have been already been sent
i feel like i don't have the time to keep trying to find out what is going on, as i'm very busy right now, although any help is always appreciated
    thanks
    Alan,
Refresh my memory: what type(s) of account are you
using -- POP, IMAP or .mac?
Since I believe your setting up a new User Account,
and Mail in it worked, did you ever remove the
com.apple.mail.plist, and cause Mail to need to be
setup again? To do this, quit Mail, and in the
Finder open Home/Library and locate the Mail folder.
Control-click over the Mail folder, and choose
Duplicate -- then drag the resulting copy to the
Desktop for temporary backup. Next, open
    Home/Library/Preferences and find the
com.apple.mail.plist file and drag it to the
    desktop.
Relaunch Mail, which will open as though new, and
when prompted to import anything DECLINE.
Instead, re-enter your account info, and Mail will
re-discover the account for this account, and all
    should be well.
Sorry that I have not had time to go back over every
    one of your prior posts.

  • Is it possible to keep an email account on the iPhone but stop if from checking for new mail?

I have an email account that has been deleted from the provider (Gmail), but I want to keep the old mails on my phone, while stopping it from checking for new mail.  Is this possible?
If I disable the account to stop if from checking for new mail (and producing a bunch of annoying pop-ups every time the mail app is opened), the account becomes invisible and the old mails disappear.  I want to keep them visible to I can read and refer to them, but want to stop the phone from trying to download new ones or check the account.
    Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the thought.  In this case, that doesn't really help much, as it requires a bunch of button pushing just to check emails.  Plus, if I'm not mistaken, in addition to switching modes every time I check email, it also prevents the other accounts from downloading the most recent mails as well.  Since it's possible to keep an account on a Mac computer, but take it offline, it's very disappointing if there isn't a way to do the equivalent on an iPhone so that it passively holds the mails but doesn't send constant pop-ups every time the app is accessed.

  • Since the last update, hotmail no longer automatically checks for new mail. How do I fix it?

Hotmail used to automatically check for new mail regularly. It no longer does that. I have to click on refresh to get new mail.

  • Email automatically checking for new mail !

Has anyone else had this problem.
As far as i'm aware my iPhone is set to only check for new mail manually, but on making a phonecall it automatically checks for new mail and pings up on my iPhone.
Push is off, Fetch new data is off, and advanced setting are all set as 'Manual'.
Any luddite mistakes i may be making ?
    Thanks,
    Scott.

Mine only seems to do that at 11:30PM.
Don't ask why the time.. nothing consistently triggers my random email fetching.

  • OSX Mail not checking for new mail on wake from Sleep.

Since upgrading to 10.6.4, my iMac no longer checks for new mail when waking from sleep. I have to manually Get Mail, and then it keeps up to date as normal. RSS feeds get updated fine. I am using MobileMe mail.
Any ideas? I have restarted Mail and rebooted the computer. Nothing obvious in the logs.

I think you will find this is a product of the use of the IDLE command. When the computer is asleep, but you have not quit Mail and logged off, the MobileMe server try to contact the Mail app to "push" emails. Not finding any response from Mail, the account is logged off. Quitting Mail and relaunching should restore -- does it?
You can test this by deselecting to use IDLE in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced.
Most people, who leave Mail running, would only allow the display to sleep and not the computer.

  • Thunderbird has stopped checking for new mail on start up.

After updating to Thunderbird 24.3, the program stopped checking for new mail on start up. I now have to manually click "get Mail" for each email account. I have checked the configuration for each account and check mail on start up is checked.

    couple of possibilities here
Shift + F5 will get all mail

  • Mac Mail 6 is missing the "spinning wheel" indicator when checking for new mail

Before updating to Maountain Lion, when cheking for new mail in Mail, there was a little indicator ("spinning wheel") next to the Inbox to confirm it was actually working.
Since updating to Mountain Lion, the indicator isn't there. It's not that much of a big deal if it doesn't exist anymore, but it was good to have, and if it's just a setting I need to turn back on, then that would be cool, if I could find it

for who is "expected behavior"?????, if you have 6 mails account with different domain or private domains this is NOT an expected behavior... why? this missing indicator work to know if your site or email client is up or down or slow, ok maybe a lot of people don't use this but, don't take desicions like microsoft!!!... looks like some ex-employee from microsoft has a very cool job on apple right now
i don't know who did "This solved my questionRe: Mac Mail 6 is missing the "spinning wheel" indicator when checking for new mail"
you need to remove that... Take another bite to the apple an work on that!!!
