After moving Music folder to external disk, iTunes and iPhone Apps gone :-(

My 70GB PowerBook G4 needed disk space, hence I copied the Music folder to an external backup drive, and from there to a tiny portable drive, and then deleted it on the Mac (gained 14GB of space).
When I ran iTunes, and changed the location of the iTunes library to the portable drive, none of the music files are visible; worse yet, none of the iPhone Apps shows up. So I don't dare to synchronize, because I am afraid that I may even loose the iPhone Apps on the iPhone.
Your hints/solutions/suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks and cheers,
Veit

Thanks. John, for your excellent problem-solvers.
Since I had already deleted the itunes files on my Mac, I went the "TimeMachine restore way" and it works. Thanks! Good also to know that the iPhone Apps are always available.
Perhaps you know the answer to another iTunes/iPhone question:
On the iPhone I have some iPod music, but I hardly use it. When I sync the iPhone with the Mac, I'd rather just leave the music on the iPhone "alone" and only sync the iPhone Apps. But when I un-check the Sync Music box (in iTunes>Devices>iPhone>Music tab) I am getting a message that if I do not sync the music, the tunes on the iPhone will be deleted. How do I leave the music on the iPhone, WITHOUT syncing it with iTunes on the Mac (while syncing Apps, and perhaps photos)? Any suggestions there?
Cheers, Veit

  • ITunes playlist empty after moving music folder

I have recently moved my music folder to a different partition on my PC. After doing that, my entire song list, including playlists, has vanished from iTunes.
I tried changing the media folder location by going to edit -> preferances -> advanced.
I tried holding Shift when starting iTunes and choosing the correct folder.
I tried exporting the playlist from my iPhone and importing back into iTunes (got an error message that the music could not be located).
    None of the above worked...
    What can I do now?
Keep in mind that I don't want to import my entire music directory back into iTunes, since I don't have enought storage space on my phone to sync the whole thing onto it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Hold down shift as you start iTunes. You should get a prompt to choose or create a library. Click choose. Browse to the folder for your relocated library and open the file iTunes Library.itl. If it still comes up empty, close iTunes and use the following technique...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Moved music folder to external drive, how do I get Match/ITunes to recognise it?

    Hi guys,
I've been rather stupid in restoring my computer. I moved all the music to an external harddrive before I restored my PC but forgot to bring the Itunes library file with it. I've got ITunes Match so I can stream all my songs, but is there anyway to get it to recognise the songs on my external drive? I've tried re-importing them into ITunes but it adds each song as a duplicate, so I have the Match version and then my harddrive version, I really don't want duplicates of all 7000 odd songs! Likewise I'd like to try to avoid having to download everything from Match as this will take ages and be a bit of a pain! The only reason I care is so I can use my Sonos system with my laptop, otherwise I'd just leave them all on Match. Any ideas?
    Thanks, Luke

You will need the iTunes Library.itl file which generally lives in ~/Music/iTunes/. You can recover this from the backups you were making before the HDD died. Otherwise, you cannot recreate the library.

  • Small problem after moving music folder

I moved my music folder to an external drive and used the consolidate library afterwards. All the music was moved with no problems and I have no exclamation points anywhere.
My only problem was I had purchased three iPod games. They are still located in the old folder on my Mac drive but they no longer show on iTunes so they have been removed from the iPod. How can I get these games back into iTunes?
    Thanks

I posted just before you did that this was why they were not showing up. Problem is solved. The Phaze game also has a playlist and I got it to recreate the playlist by deleting it then restarting iTunes. I added songs to it and then resynced. No more problems.

  • ITunes and iPhone Apps help

Just wondering if anyone can help me out.
I have been using the iPhone 3GS since November 2009 with no problems at all (aside from the occasional freezing but a quick restart always fixed that).
However, the other day I connected my iPhone to my PC and when iTunes loaded up, my whole music library had gone (on the computer, not the phone). This was also the case with all the podcasts I've downloaded, as well as most of the applications I've purchased off iTunes.
Whenever I connect my iPhone it Syncs with iTunes. However with my current settings, I disabled the automatic Syncing of pretty much everything (including music, apps, podcasts etc). However, whenever I added a music file to the library and then either manually Synced the phone or just waited to re-connect to the PC and let iTunes Sync it for me, the new tunes would appear on the iPhone. Note: this also worked when I downloaded a new App.
    +__So now to my question(s):__+
    - Why would all this information suddenly disappear from my library on the computer? (note: I haven't added any new software, I have no viruses and alawys scan for malware, and nothing out of the ordinary has happened to my computer ... it just wasn't there when I loaded the computer last week);
    - Is there a way to retreive all the music files / apps / podcasts that mysteriously vanished from iTunes last week? If so, how? (note: all the fles I want are still on the iPhone);
    - Is there a way to re-sync my iPhone so that I can keep all the music / apps / podcasts etc on there while at the same time adding to my iPhone the new apps I have downloaded using iTunes on the computer? If not, would I be able to re-download all the apps I've purchased from iTunes or would I have to purchase them all again (note: I've got some pretty expensive apps on my phone atm!).
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
    Kind regards,

  • I've update my music using an external disk; now I uploaded agin the music  but it doesn't appear in Itunes. How can I synchronize the music folder with Itunes?

I've managed my music downloading and uploading it from an external disk; I put the music into the Finder MUSIC folder and copyed it into Itubìnes but it does't appear. What Do I have to do? How can I synchronize the Musice Folder with Itunes?

    Chris, thanks for the reply.
That's what I'm confused about. I did exactly what you said. I copied the entire music folder from the old computer and put it in the music folder on the new computer. I've tried that two or three times now. And, I've checked, and all of the files are there (that's what I meant by 'clicking on Itunes Media'--when I click on the iTunes media folder in music/itunes in Finder, all of the files are there). But, when I open iTunes, nothing shows up--no movies, no music, no tv shows. It seems like it should be so simple, but it won't work for me.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks so much.

  • Adding music folder from hard disk to itunes causes the original music  to vanish

what is causing itunes to delete original music folder from hard disk when selecting add folder to itunes

iTunes doesn't have any automatic way of re-creating your directory structure in terms of folders and playlists in iTunes.   You will have to drag each music folder to a playlist and then arrange these in folders inside of iTunes (which I warn you can can slow down iTunes a lot).   I guess the once chance of speeding this up will be if somebody has written an Applescript to do it, but I don't remeber seeing any anywhere.

    Hi MJPHU,
I understand that when you want to move music or video from your external hard drive to sync with iTunes, that media is staying on your computer and taking up hard drive space. In this situation I would recommend changeing the location of where iTunes looks for the media. This way you can sync anything you want without dragging files to your computer hard drive. If the external drive with the media is connected, iTunes will sync directly from there. The following article explains how to change the location of where iTunes looks for your media.

i have backed up all my music on an external hard drive and i was wondering is there a quick way to put it all back on itunes.

    Hello, Gazzlaa84.
You can import your media a couple different ways.  If you plan on keeping the media on the external drive, I would just direct iTunes to read the media folder on the external.  Here are the steps on how to make that change.

  • Playing music from USB External Disk

To save disk space I decided to export my music files to an external drive, erase them from my PC hard disk in the hope that I could play my music from the external drive. Trouble is, when I added the files inti iTunes, it puts them all back on the hard disk..
Can anyone help me out here?!
    Thanks,
    Nick

Nick: If you let your Library "copy files to the iTunes Music folder", your external drive "F" would be your working folder, and your drive "C" would serve as your back up. You will; however, have to clean up/delete your drive "C" "Temp Files" periodically to keep these files from filling up your drive "C" with two sets of information.
You do need to figure a place to keep your "back ups", or you will be in trouble in the event of a catastrophe!

  • How do I move my music folder it into the iTunes folder?

Before I had an iPod all my music was in the My Music folder. When I started using an iPod and iTunes I left all my music in the My Music folder. I have been reading how to back up or move my music and I see my setup is not a good one.
I want to correct my setup by getting all my music into the iTunes folder. How do I do this the right way? Once I do this will all my music, art, play lists, and ratings be together so they all get backed up and/or can be move to an external drive?
My Music folder is about 60 gb and the free space on my hard drive is about 17 gb.

  • Moving iTunes and iPhone from an old PC to a new MacBook Pro

Hi, I am having some real problems. I have recently bought a new Macbook Pro to replace my old Windows PC. I am having no trouble moving all of documents and music from the old PC however I am completely stuck for what to do in transferring my iTunes and iPhone 4 content AND information onto the new itunes. I have consolidated the music files on the old pc but havent copied anything yet.
What I am looking to do is to be able to sync the iPhone to the new Mac without any of the information on the iphone being erased. Is this possible without having to pay for third party software? I have a WiFi network which both of the computers are connected to. I am also able to use an external harddrive.
I have already transferred the purchases from my account onto the new mac but a lot off my music isnt from the itunes store but is from various CD's.
I am really lost on what to do and I am even considering writing down all my contacts, lol. However, i do have all of my current iPhone info such as contacts and calender sync'd with iCloud if this helps.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Matt

After installing the 64 bit version of itunes my iphone still won't sync. I get the explantation that I mobile driver application did not download and i need to remove and reinstall itunes (which I have done numberous times).  Any help?

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, does your device connect without that message now?
