After no problem for 2 yrs, signal dropping out intermittently.

The signal is dropping out unexpectly, often this is when there is more than one device is using the wi-fi. No updates are pending on the AE or our devices. We have switched out our modem midway over the time we've been having the problem. Our ADSL provider claims the problems aren't on their end.
Is this sort of problem common when an Airport Express is going bad? The AE has not been relocated.
Do Airport Expresses just quit working or can there be intermittent problems leading up to its final demise?

We've had our AE "quit" randomly for a couple of years. I thought ot was Comcast & would reset the modem. I've found that the unit is warm to the touch. What I now do is to unplug the AE for a couple of minutes. This seems to do the trick. I guess I'm resetting it without messing with passwords, etc.

  • Help needed for strange signal drop out problem

My iphone 3G does this odd thing -
The phone will show a strong 3G signal until I open an app that uses data, or try to make a call. Then the signal suddenly vanishes and the connection fails. If I wait 10 seconds it comes back and it's fine. Also it seems I am missing calls while the phone is locked.
When I disable 3G under the network settings the problem seems to go away.
Has anyone one else had similar issues or been able to solve the problem?
    Many thanks.
    Luke

I have the samme issue ever since 3.x software came out. HAvent been able to use 3G since and have been operating on Edge without issues. Very dissapointing as its definitely a software problem and been going on for ages...even the newest update 3.1.3 hasnt fixed it...

  • Verizon DSL drops out intermittently: problems for 10 months

Subject: Verizon DSL drops out intermittently:  problems for 10 months
    Hi all,
Just wondering if any one can help.  We had Verizon DSL on our home phone line for six years in Worcester MA.  The first five years we had little to problems.  The last 10 months we’ve have frequent (nearly every day drop out and period where the DSL line can’t connect for minutes to sometimes hours).
We’ve had seven different technicians visit us for a total of thirteen visits.  They’ve replaced the line coming into our house multiple times and isolated our home phone lines from the DSL feed but this hasn’t helped. Verizon tech support can’t seem to get back to me with a detailed plan of what they are going to do next and few representatives return my phone calls.
We’ve also tried at least five router and modems and it hadn’t helped.  They recently changed the DSL card(?) in the local office (~7000 ft away) and said they switched us to ADS2.
We’re still seeing internet drops and we’re at our wit’s end.
    Any ideas?
Here’s our transceiver stats from our Verzion 7500 DSL modem combo:

    Thanks,

Well, we're getting pretty fed up.  Here's the letter that we are sending out for a Verizon Presidential Appeal...
    To:
     Verizon, St. Petersburg, FL
    Verizon Technical Team, Worcester, MA
The Department of Telecommunications and Cable, Consumer Division, Boston, MA
    Better Business Bureau
    Dear Sirs,
We are writing to lodge a formal complaint about our Verizon DSL service, and the extremely
poor treatment we have received while trying to resolve this (still unresolved) problem. We have had
intermittent internet outages for the last 12 months. This followed five years of normal DSL service at
the same address. Our problems worsened this spring; our internet is out a few minutes to several
hours a day, most days a week. Our next door neighbors have the same problem with their Verizon
DSL service, though they do not use the internet very often so are less affected than we are. We rely
on consistent internet service for our jobs.
We have had 13 technician visits to our home from a total of seven different technicians. On
multiple occasions, we have also been stood up for scheduled technician visits, including days in
which we took off work to be home. Two of these times in which we were stood up were not visits that
Verizon initiated, where we were told we needed to be home. Additionally, we have received
several “auto-calls” informing us that our problem is fixed and our work tickets have been closed. This
is extremely upsetting to us, as our problem has never been fixed as we have explained many times.
Several technicians have spoke confidently (and condescendingly) that their work would fix our
problem; these are generally the technicians we never saw again.
It is clear from our several calls each month to Verizon that persons and departments within
the company do not communicate with one another. Time and time again, we have been shuffled from
person to person, and now believe that no one wants to expend the effort to deal with our problems.
For example, multiple employees have failed to call us back when they said they would. We have
asked several times for a team of creative thinkers (with the authority to act) to brainstorm some sort
of solution and let us know what Verizon was doing to solve our problem. This has not happened. We
have made extensive notes about our service interruptions and our correspondence with Verizon over
the last several months; these are included in this packet. We also have multiple videos across several
months showing that DSL signal is not available.
We believe that a new line needs to be put in from the local hub to our house, a distance of
only a few blocks. (See notes on reverse of page.) At this point, we have no faith that Verizon is
willing to fix this problem and restore service to us. This is truly a shameful way to do business.
If Verizon is unwilling to restore our DSL service to acceptable levels, we would like Verizon to
Notes: This is what Verizon has told us they have done:
    1. Isolated our phone line from DSL.
    2. Replaced the line from our street to our home.
    3. Switched the F2.
    4. Put us on an A-DSL2 card at the local hub.
We have tried seven DSL modems and six routers without success. The problem is not within
our house; that is clear. We believe a new F1 line is needed. We were even told by a company
representative on the phone “well, DSL is on copper wire…” - basically from our view, an admission
that copper wire can go bad, and that this may be the cause of our problems. We have asked for a
new F1 line to be installed several times and been brushed off each time.

  • Keynote video signal drops out

Keynote 4 video signal drops out during presentations where we are switching between two different Apple Computers (one G4 and one Intel). Both machines had previous versions of Keynote on them and over a period of time never had a signal drop out condition. Sounds like new version problem.
    Any input appreciated.

I have two laptops each with their video out adapter connected and then cabled to a switch box where the big monitors project the signal of the laptop that the swtich box is set to. Like channel selection. Previous versions of Keynote were never a problem and I mean never. The signal came right through but now with Keynote 4 the signal drops out even tho the laptop is still active and apparently sending a signal through its video out connection. I have to hit escape and get out of keynote and then go back to PLAY for keynote to once again send that signal.

    Hello,
I have very similar problem. Suddenly Firefox stopped work - It was working few days after ver. 4 update. I was looking everywhere for some solution but nothing worked.
    - uninstalled firewall - did not worked
    - added full exception for Firefox into the firewall - did not worked
    - Firefox reinstall - did not worked
    - Firefox complete reinstall (registry included) - did not worked
    - IPv6 diseabling - did not worked
    - diferent proxy options (no proxy, system proxy, autodetect proxy) - did not worked
    - new firefox profile - did not worked
    - complete coockies, history... deleted - did not worked
    - there is only one solution which partly works - I have used public proxy addresses for Firefox but the ping is (750ms), down/up (0.8MB/0.2MB originaly (10MB/2MB) and yes I have tried different proxy server from different countries from my included.
    - IE is working perfectly and without proxy
    - other companies browser - did not worked too
    - only IE is working
    - I have used three different malware, trojans, spyware, anti-virus programs and nothing
It seems to me as hopeless situation or very clever move from Microsoft, I am forced to use IE - at least this works
    Any ideas, solutions?

  • Toslink Signal Dropping Out Occasionally

    Hi
I have my Mac Pro (Early 2009 with OS 10.8.2) connected to a DAC using the toslink connection however when listening to music with iTunes the music drops out approximately every ten minutes or so. This happens just for a very tiny moment, but it is rather annoying.
Using my MacBook Pro (Early 2011 with OS 10.8.2) connected to the same DAC with toslink does not have this problem.
I have tried using a couple of different toslink cables with my Mac Pro but the problem is still there.
All the music files I listen to in iTunes are Apple Lossless is burned from CDs I've purchased so they are 16 bit / 44 kHz resolution. It is not high resolution.
I've tried shutting down all the applications on the Mac and using only iTunes, but the problem persists.
It occured to me that maybe there is disc fragmentation, however the hard drive is 1.36 TB free on the 2 TB disc, so I think that it would be unlikely to be fragmented.
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions?
    Thank you.

    ayam,
Your PC may be passively listening on a particular channel for the signal different than what your iMac may be listening to. You may want to consider testing various channels using the steps noted in knowledge base article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirPortUtility/5.0/en/ap2085.html

  • 3Gs Wifi cuts out when cell signal drops out

I recently received a new 3Gs from Applecare with firmware 3.1.3. My previous 3Gs was running 3.1.2. I have terrible cell signal in my basement. It usually bounces between 1 bar and no signal. Since receiving my new 3Gs, the wifi signal would drop and come back when the cell signal goes from 1 bar to no signal. It also does this when it goes from no signal to 1 bar. I never noticed this on my previous phone with 3.1.2 firmware. I only noticed this since it interrupts my pod cast streams. I also noticed that when the wifi signal cuts out, the iphone locks up momentarily (can't do anything on the touchscreen). Has anyone else noticed this? Hardware or firmware issue? BTW, restoring to a fresh setup doesn't seem to help.

In case someone ends up having the same problem, I suspected a faulty cell radio in my iPhone. The local Apple store swapped out the phone. They also suspected it having the same problem.
This is now my FOURTH iPhone 3GS. (#1 bad accelerometer, #2 scratched LCD & bad cell radio / GPS chip, #3 bad cell radio). I hope this one does better.
What's happened to the quality of these phones? My 1st gen iPhone had Zero problems. It was chipped and banged up quite a bit, but still worked like a champ.

  • After Effects CS4 and NFS Network Drop-Outs

    Hi all,
We're experiencing a high number of NFS drop-outs ever since we've upgraded our department to AE CS4. I'm not saying CS4 is the culprit, I'm just saying this is when we started noticing the issue.
13 Apple MacPro 8-core systems. 12 Leopard, 1 Snow Leopard.
Projects are located on an Apple XServe 2.26 Quad-Core Xeon with 12GB RAM running 10.5.8 Server
Projects are shared up via NFS protocol via gigabit network.
Basically throughout the day, a random number of peole will lose connection to the NFS share, to which it returns on its own in a few moments. Though it's not everyone each time, all users encounter the issue at least once-a-day, usually more. (We have to different servers with NFS shares, one does not drop, the other does) The server that drops the share is the newer XServe Leopard and is the primary server where all the footage and projects are located. The 2nd server is just secondary library media and stock footage...
Essentially, I'm curious if anyone else is having NFS issues since the update to CS4. I'm just trying to weed out all elements. It's hard to say if it's the server itself, as the logs only note a drop once-in-a-while... We also use Rush Rendering for our Maya renders, which we have just upgraded to the latest version and we get drops even when no one is using Rush or Maya...
Very strange but extremely frustrating issue. It's not fun when someone is working on a project and loses it because the share drops out.
Any input greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need more info.
    Thanks!

Session timeouts.... I really do think it's the server. AE doesn't care for specific network stuff, it's all just volumes/ drives to the program. To avoid these issues, you would have to shorten the refresh cycles on your server availability broadcasts or the "keep alive" cycles on the connection/ session settings themselves. I'd know how to do it on Win Server, but I have no clue with regards to XServe configuration. Still, certainly some simple console commands and a restart of the server software should be able to take care of the matter.

  • Interesting problem for all the DIYers out there

I'm sure you've all heard about the compact flash upgrade for the iPod mini, where you replace the microdrive with a compact flash card to get more storage/better battery life/better durability. I dropped my mini a bit ago, and broke the microdrive in the process. I figured that I'd try this hack, but instead of using a compact flash card, I decided to use a SD/SDHC to Compact Flash Type II adapter instead, since SDHC cards are even cheaper than Compact flash for similar capacities at the moment. When it was all said and done, I actually wound up spending less on the adapter + 32gb sdhc card than I would have spent on a standalone 16gb compact flash card.
However, whenever I restore my iPod, as soon as I reconnect it, iTunes tells me that it's corrupted and needs to be restored again. The thing is, the restore seems to be valid- after the restore process is finished, I can use the menu system on the mini perfectly fine. It's basically what it should be, the OS without any songs/media on it. ****, I can even play bricked. Still, the second I plug it back into windows, iTunes recognizes the iPod, fails to display a number in the capacity field, and tells me to restore it. Windows 7 RC1 also tells me that I'll need to format it if I want to use it with the computer. The memory stick is fine, as is the compact flash adapter. I can format the stick with or without the Compact Flash adapter just fine with my printer or PS3 (only two devices I own with a Memory card reader), but after I "restore" my iPod, if I try to just use the stick in either reader, it'll fail (the compact flash adapter becomes required). After restoration, if I view the contents of the compact flash adapter + sdhc, it appears with the volume label of "IPOD" with an empty directory listing. Finally, every time the mini "goes to sleep", it will prompt me to select a language on "wake up", which I guess means that it didn't write that setting to the disk....
Any ideas? Could someone give me an image of their iPod mini that I could try to use to restore, or the contents of their mini drive (minus the music) in a .zip/.7z/whatever that I could try to work with?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you feel that you have a solution.

  • Why is the signal dropping out every few seconds?

I have an airport express card in my iMac intel core duo. I have an airport express plugged into my stereo so I can stream iTunes. iTunes recognizes the stereo AX. There is the airport signal icon up on the top bar of the computer screen, which reads all bars solid, then all bars light grey, then all bars solid - this corresponds to dropouts on the stereo. These dropouts do not occur in the computer speakers though, so I know I'm getting the info. Where is this problem originating? The sending card, or the receiving AX? It is maddening. I have tried resetting the stereo AX by pushing the little inset button, but that didn't fix this. Is there a way to reset the card in the computer? What do I do now?
    thanks

Thank you, Glenn - I changed the channel to 11 (I didn't realize there was an option for this, but a little hunting brought up the "Automatic" and 11 channels - so I set it to 11). I already was using interference robustness, and I could tell that helped a little but didn't solve the dropouts totally - and the channel change seems to have solved it. Thanks for the solution!

  • IMac Audio dropping out intermittently

I have a 3.4 ghz intel core i7 iMac running Mac OS X version 10.7.5
I currently have a bose companion 5 system as my external audio device. The audio works fine when the computer is started, but stops working anywhere from 2 minutes to half an hour after starting. To make the audio work again, the computer must be restarted.
I have looked all all my physical connections, checked the audio panel in system preferences and the audiomidi setup in utilities. All of those things appear to be normal.
Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated!
    Thank you.
    DA.

    I got this from "GearSlutz".com
Well, since the USB 2.0 hub still was messing up here and there, I decided to walk down to the Apple store to buy a Belkin Thunderbolt express. Yeah, this solved the problem 100%. Audio interface is finally working as it should. No dropouts at all. Not even once after a whole days work! NICE. So, yeah, if you have $300 to burn, this is a perfect fix.
It seem to be a problem with USB and Thunderbolt.  I hope this gets fixed soon, after spending 3k I dont have another 300 for a dock.

  • Airport drops out intermittently

    15" MacBook Pro, 2.66Ghz Core i7. OS X 10.6.4.
This is a relatively new machine (about 2 months old).
Every so often the wireless network stops working, and when I check
the airport status in the top bar, it shows no bars
(normally full bars - the Mac is about 8 feet away from my
WAP). I have to turn airport off and on again to get the
    network back.
This happens sometimes once in a week, sometimes a couple
    times a day.
It's not the WAP. There are 3 other Macs in the house, all significantly
further away from the WAP, and they have no such problems.
    Anyone....?
    Thanks,

If the signal is weak on your new MBP, try moving or rotating its position a couple inches at a time and testing between moves. Sometimes moving even 6 or 8 inches can drastically reduce interference.
If nothing you try from these suggestions helps, ask your retailer to repair your new MBP while it is still under warranty.

  • Audio drops out for about 2 seconds after about 2 hours

Hey folks....I've been renting HD movies, and I've noticed a bit of a pattern. Three times now, at some point just after about two hours the audio drops out for about two seconds. It's not exactly the same time - on one movie it was at 2:02:26 and another it was at 2:04:18. It's only two seconds, so it's really of no consequence. Just now it was during the closing credits (the music). Before, it was that scene in Batman where the two ferries are stalled on the river.
Of course, I would rewind to make sure. I use the optical out.
    Anyone else notice this?

Do a hard reset. Hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.
