After numerous attempts to install Snow Leopard....

...._(by numerous I mean more than 6 attempts made)_ I have finally thrown in the towel and will be using Leopard (10.5.8)....forever, I suppose.
My last attempt(s) (this morning) was to use Pacifist to re-install iCal in Snow Leopard and then using the original install disc to try the "Install Optional Installs". Zero, zip, nada on everything tried.
I need iCal but Snow Leopard will not allow it. It launches, bounces up and down in the dock a couple of times and then quits.
Here's the latest info from my final attempted launch of iCal in Snow Leopard:
....and yes, it was sent to Apple. Again. This is one bug that will never be squashed.

Your machine with no non-Apple devices should be able to install iCal and Snow Leopard no trouble.
The logfile is often difficult to determine what went wrong. But my belief in such matters is simplify first, and then add on later. Backup your data at least twice, and see if there is an issue just erase installing Snow Leopard from a retail installer disc. If there is, then you know there is a hardware problem if no non-Apple devices are connected. Running the hardware test that came with your Mac:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081 would allow you to determine this without any installation of data whatsoever, as long as the issue isn't due to some random RAM issue that it can't detect.

  • My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard (via my MacBookPro), either from the HD or DVD drive.  Can't get it to run Hardware Test.  Disk Utility says disk OK - files are there. What can I do?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

  • I'm attempting to install snow leopard on my 2008 Imac and it stops installing less than 1/4 way through?

I'm attempting to install Snow Leopard on my 2008 Imac and before it 1/4 way done installing, it ejects the disc and restarts the computer.  Is there something I am doing wrong?

    See:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • Older Macbook won't start after attempting to install snow leopard

A friend of mine with a pre intel notebook inadvertently tried to install Snow Leopard and now it won't start up.  Any suggestions?

    Hi DOGG,
I'm not sure if he erased...  When you power it up you get the gray screen with the apple logo for a few minutes then it shuts down.  I put Leopard in and pressed the C key while starting up and I got the Installer but my only choice was to erase everything and install or erase and journal or something like that.  It shows that there is 23GB disk space remaining and 185 total so I was hesitant to proceed because it looks like maybe everything is still there.  Then found my old Tiger install disk and tried to start from there and it just kept powering itself off after a minute or two.  I read something about the Tiger install disks were specific to different models so maybe mine isn't compatible?  Anyway, I've asked him to find his install disk so I can try that.  But if it sounds like his hard drive is erased should I just go ahead with Leopard?

  • Removing Previous Owners Account - Re-Installing Snow Leopard?

I purchased an iMac over the weekend online, when I started it up it had all the previous owners information, he did provide me the passwords and all the discs, so I was hoping to reformat the harddrive and do a fresh install of Snow Leopard so I could set it up my way. I have attempted to install Snow Leopard and it takes like 40min, but once its done, all the previous owners stuff is still there. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Mr Urban;
Since the Snow Leopard installer no longer has the Erase & Install option, what you need to do is boot from the Snow Leopard DVD. After you select your language open the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility. There you select Erase disk. After you have erased the disk then you install Snow Leopard.

  • Unable to install Snow Leopard via disk or USB drive

I have a white MacBook bought in the summer of 2008. A few weeks ago, I attempted to install Snow Leopard and got a disk error (the one where it tells you to clean the disk and start again). I returned the disk, got a replacement, tried again and got the same message. At that point, I called Apple, and the person I talked to concluded that the problem was my optical drive rather than the disk. The optical drive was replaced a year ago under warranty, and it works fine with everything but Snow Leopard. Then I decided to try to install Snow Leopard from a USB drive instead. Everything worked fine until it was restoring Snow Leopard from the CD to the USB drive (I was doing this through Disk Utility), and I got the message Restore Failure Input/Output Error. I don't know if this means that the disk is screwed up after all or that this is a different version of the same problem with my optical drive. I'm really not sure where to go next. I don't need Snow Leopard, but I'd like to be able to update, and I'm not sure what my next step is. My MacBook is my only computer, and I am reluctant to leave it for several days to have the optical drive fixed yet again, if, in fact, that's the problem. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Understood that you don't want to leave your Mac for several days to have it fixed, but ultimately this is something you probably will need to do unless you are willing to buy an external optical drive.
The failure error message probably means the optical drive is defective, although there is some small chance you got two defective DVD's in a row. If you have an Apple Store in your area, take the MacBook & the DVD in & ask them to check both. They should be willing to help you install Snow Leopard by an alternate method even if your optical drive is the problem.

  • Unable to install Snow Leopard "Not Interchangeable"

I have attempted to install Snow Leopard twice so far, both times unsuccessful.
What is happening is it installs for about 10-15 mins and then wants to restart the the computer. fine. Once it comes back up, it has me select a language, then it searches for a disk to install the new program... Once it finally recognizes my Hard Drive (after about 10 more mins) I can select my hard drive and click "install". it them immediately tells me that the disk(Snow Leopard) is not "Interchangeable (or maybe 'Not Changeable')". I am not too sure what that means... If anyone has had the same issue, please advise.
    Thanks, Ryan

EDIT: I have tried it again, and it seems like the initial install crashes and restarts my computer. Once it restarts, it acts like it wants to start the install again, and it is not allowed.

  • Can't Install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro 2010 15"

Recently my computer has stopped working for one reason or another (i had windows in bootcamp and i removed it, then my Mac OSX lion began playing up). I wiped my disk hoping to install Mac OSX Snow Leopard from the origional disk, and then later windows. I partitioned the disk, installed windows (without the drivers) and then attempted to install Snow Leopard. However, partway through the install (not very far) it just stops and says it cannot instal. A time machine backup with previously worked now does no work and prodices a huge error report. My goal is just to completely wipe my computer and start a fresh with Snow Leopard. Can anyone help?

I've done that, ive reformatted the disk lots of times, but every time it fails on the install.

  • I can't install Snow Leopard on a brand new hard drive with a brand new optical drive.

I need help please. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. The hard drive crashed a while back so I bought a new one. The original Snow Leopard disc that came with it was scratched so I bought a new one of it as well. After trying/failing to install Snow Leopard on the new hard drive about a dozen times I bought a new optical drive as well. I installed the new optical drive today, tried to install Snow Leopard again and STILL got the same installation error messages. Any help that anyone might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Last error message:
Install failed: The Installer could not copy the necessary support files.

Did you partition and format the new drive first?
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. • Cannot install Snow Leopard onto external drive

I'm attempting to install Snow Leopard on a second drive, an external bare drive in an Icy Dock enclosure connected to a MacPro (running 10.6.6) via serial port. Apple Disc Utility confirms that the external drive (a Seagate 325gb) has a partition map scheme GUID Partition Table. SMART Status is not supported. Connection Bus reads as SCSI but it's connected with a serial cable.
I'm able to perform the first part of the install by selecting the external drive but when I have to restart and complete the install from the original Snow Leopard disc (10.6), the external drive no longer shows up. I've tried several times and have restarted the Icy Dock external drive enclosure.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

Not necessarily. Use a backup utility so that you can deselect all the data from within your Home folder as well as third-party applications in order to create a bootable disk but without some of the excess. Any of the following should be suitable:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • IPhone 3G(S) wont show up in iTunes after installing Snow Leopard

I just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 yesterday and now when I plug in my iPhone 3G(S) it wont launch iTunes and wont show up in iTunes when I open it.
It launches and shows up in iPhoto with no problem?
Any hints on what to do?

This is now fixed after I installed the update to Snow Leopard 10.6.4

  • Trying to install snow leopard on my Macbook Pro.  After already having problems with Grey screen, blinking file with a question mark, etc.  Computer now says that one of the hard drives is failing. The "hitachi" drive says it's failing in disc utility.

o.k.  So, I've been tinkering with several "self help" fixes for several days now with no positive results.  I'll explain my initial problems and then end with my most current situation.  In hopes that someone out there will have a good suggestion or possibly remedy for the issues i'm facing
First, my problem started after my wife played a game on my macbook pro and the computer froze.  She went into a panic and decided to shut down via power button.  When computer restarted she got the blinking file/grey screen and that problem continued for a couple of days before I began using steps from various support topics from apple concerning the grey screen/blinking file folder.
Ultimately, yesterday I decided to erase my Macintosh HD file as one tip suggested.  Following the brief online and on screen (via the process) tips that were there.  Once that was completed I attempted to reinstall snow leopard (my most current version on hand) into the pc.
At first, I thought this would work.  It looked promising.  But, after several hours the installation screen returned with failure.  I attempted to repeat.  And, even repair drives during this try and re-try process.
Now, today, one of the drives..  "hitachi..." states that it's failing and is in red letters with no ability to repair via the disc utility screen.  The Macintosh HD drive shows that it's o.k. But, this drive is listed under the HItachi drive so I think that's where a problem might lay.
So, I guess my question really revolves around.. What if anything can I do to get the hitachi drive back up?  (short of taking it to a repair facility and replacing.)
And, how on earth can i get my OSX back up to I have a laptop again.
Operating on a macbook pro here.  It's my lifeline.  Otherwise, I am using a Windows desktop that i'm not that fond of.  lol
I'm trying to bring this 2006 laptop back to life.  Trying to avoid a rather expensive repair or the purchase of a new laptop.  Also expensive...
    Any help would be appreciated.

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

I am Oma MacBook running the Internet on an at home wifi connection. Please help!

Why are you posting this in the Mountain Lion forum?

  • Can't install snow leopard on partition after upgrading to lion

I rushed out too early to install Lion via Apple Apps store.  Now, I realize that Rosetta is gone and so are my options to use older apps.  As I was reading on the web and Apple Support, I have tried various things and get a window saying that I can't install snow leopard.
I have never partition my hard drive, but using disk utility I created a partition called "Snow Leopard."  It divided my HD in half which is okay.  I closed the disk utility window, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and saw the OS X Install DVD.  When I select it a window pops up saying, "You can't use this version of the appl inst Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X.  You have installed Mac OS X 23.1.1."
Before downloading lion, I made a backup of my existing HD using Time Machine to an external HD.  When I open up a saved version dated a month ago, I see that the applications that were working in snow leopard now have the icon circle saying that it is not supported by lion.  This is strange since I used Time Machine to back up my HD, then turned off the app before downloading lion.  Even older versions saved on the external HD show the circle.
I read about lion and the "Recovery HD," but when I hold down the Command-R key nothing happens when I restart my computer.  It also talks about using the option key but that does not work.  It talks about reinstalling lion using this system, but I don't see it working.
How can I install snow leopard on my new partition, then I would go to "Software Updates," to get the latest version, or use one of the versions on my external HD to have both operating system.
    Thanks,
    DaisyMay

    Hi Scottiemn,
As I was trying different things to make a partition on my HD, I made notes as to what I did, and I finally got it to work.  I will try to explain what I did.
Before installing “Lion,” I backed up Snow Leopard using Time Machine to my external Seagate HD.  I installed “Lion,” and found out that I could not use some of my old apps, so I did the following.
Since I am running “Lion,” I opened up disk utility and selected my MacHD (1TB), then I selected partition, and it showed “Macintosh HD” under the partition information name.  I believe I selected the plus, + and it divided my HD space in half, and I named it Snow Leopard.
I then installed the Snow Leopard DVD, and restarted my computer holding down the “C” key, I held it down for about 30 seconds or more and then took my finger off of the key.  As I waited I finally saw that I was on the install DVD, and on the top menu bar I saw “Utilities.”  I had my external Seagate HD mounted on my desk top before I restarted my computer, I selected the “Utilities,” on the menu bar and it gave me the option to back up from Time Machine, I selected my external Seagate HD to the newly created partition I named Snow Leopard and I said “Yes.”  I followed the instructions and after it was done, I went to the menu bar and selected System Preferences, System, Startup Disk, and selected to start up with Snow Leopard.  On my desktop, I can see two Hard Drives, one is Macintosh HD with “Lion,” and the other is Snow Leopard.
Then, I started up my computer and I was on the Snow Leopard partition and I saw all of my apps working.  I then went back to the menu bar and selected System Preferences, System, Startup Disk, and selected to start up with “Lion,” and restarted my computer and I was running “Lion.”
I am not sure why I was not able to use the DVD of SL before, but somehow I got it to work, and I hope that I have explained what I did above.
One thing, when I installed “Lion,” from the app store, I did not make a bootable DVD of the application.  I went back to the app store and downloaded “Lion” again and kept it in the dock until I got Snow Leopard to work.  I burned a DVD of “Lion,” and so I have a backup of it.
Since my Seagate HD has only 250 GB of space and it is an EIDE HD 7,200 rpm using an OWC Mercury Elite FW400/USB2 with the Oxford chipset 911 enclosure which I bought in 2008, I decided that since I now have my 27 inch iMac quad core i5 with 1TB that I needed a larger hard drive.
I researched the web and decided to go back to OWC and just bought a 2.0TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro “Quad Interface” 64MB with eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2.0 with 7,200 rpm speed for $219.00.  I partitioned it for Time Machine, and Carbon Copy Cloner.
I ran Time Machine, and both partitions “Lion, and Snow Leopard” are on the Time Machine partition and both HD’s are under the Carbon Copy Cloner.
I am self taught on my many iMac’s over the years, and I go to the forums to ask questions and follow the helpful hints to resolve my problems.  I carefully try different things and write down what I did so I don’t repeat things.
I hope that I have explained what I did, and hopefully it will work for you.
When I want to run SL, I select in the System Preferences to start up from that disk, when I want to run Lion, I go back and select that and start up my computer running Lion.
Since I have many old apps that Rosetta uses to open them up in SL I wanted to keep that operating system.  I will go back now that I have everything working and see if I really need them.  I won’t rush to remove my SL partition that I created, but in time if I don’t need the older apps then I may clean out my system and just run Lion.
I run Lion now all of the time, but when I need to go back to SL, I now have the option.
    Good Luck,
    DaisyMay
