After OS reinstallation on my A30 the drive stops to recognize DVDs

HI I'VE RECENTLY RE-INSTALLED MY OPERATING SYSTEM USING THE TOSHIBA SYSTEM DISKS AND NOW MY SD-R2412 DRIVE HAS STOPPED DETECTING AND SORTS OF DVD'S.
AFTER LOOKING AT FORUMS I'M STILL STUMPED FOR THE ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM. I DON'T KNOW WHETHER ITS THE DRIVE, THE SYSTEM , THE DRIVERS OR WHAT.
ITS AN A30 SERIES BROUGHT IN DEC 03. PLEASE HELP.

Hello Scu
The fact is: If the unit is preinstalled with original recovery media the installation is absolutely clean and all hardware components are installed with the right driver.
What is the drive status in device manager? Is the drive recognized in Windows explorer? Please check the functionality with original DVD films? If there is no success I presume that the drive is defective and it is not known to me that you can fix it using some firmware or something like that.
In my opinion it is not problem of the operating system. It can be just DVD drive malfunction.

  • After Upgrade to 10.5.8 Optical Drive will not Recognize DVD's

    Hello Everyone,
I was hoping that someone would be able to shed light on a problem I recently ran into after upgrading from Leopard 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 and possibly suggest a solution.
I believe there is an issue with the optical drive software. The reason I suspect this is because one evening I was able to watch a DVD without any problems. After completing the upgrade to version 10.5.8 of Leopard last night, the same DVD failed to play. When inserting the disk, the optical drive makes a whirring sound for about a minute then proceeds to spit out the DVD. I've tested this with CD's, which seem to work fine. Other DVD's have the same issue as the first.
Can anyone suggest anything to help sort this issue out?
    Many thanks to everyone.
    Ron

I'm facing the same issues with my MacBook and its "SuperDrive". Right after inserting any media, it spits it out immediately, thus, I'm not able to read nor write any kind of disc. Below are the specs for my "SuperDrive":
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
    Firmware: KA14
    Connection: ATAPI
    Recording: Yes
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Sim
    Records CD: -R, -RW
    Records DVD: -R, -RW
    Recording: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
I have sent Steve Jobs an email ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) and posted a feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
Probably you guys have seen it already, but MacBook Pro owners are having similar issues with their "SuperDrives": http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=0&tstart=0

    Hello FM-Paris,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your Mac mini.  I would be concerned too if my Mac mini was restarting unexpectedly.  I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" in the article below to help isolate and troubleshoot this issue:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

  • I have an external seagate 2tb drive with 3 partitions each with encrypted passwords. What must I do if one of the drives won't recognize it's password?

I have an external seagate 2tb drive with 3 partitions each with encrypted passwords. What must I do if one of the drives won't recognize it's password?

I would have to say the LCD display or possibly the inverter as the graphics adapter can properly output to an external monitor. This would be repaired under warranty.

  • Combo drive doesn't recognize DVD movies

a665s5186 (1 year old) dvd/cd combo drive does not recognize dvd movies (does not show up in my computer).
Cd's play, record fine! Will recognize previously burnt sony dvd's, will not recognize previously burnt memorex dvd's. Will recognize blank sony and memorex dvd's and burn files to them, after ejecting will not recognize memorex dvd's, will recognize sony dvd's? MY SYSTEM BACK UP DISCS I BURNT TO MEMOREX DISCS CANNOT RE- INSTALL OPERATING SYSTEM. Please help my combo drive recognize and play dvd movies.
    Solved!

     Peter,
I apologize for the hiatus. I tried several restore points, and reinstalled to out of the box state from the hard drive partition. Neither corrected the problem.
Out of curiosity, I installed Ubuntu operating system. The problem is duplicated, combo drive recognizes CDs does not recognize commercial DVD's. Does not recognize Microsoft office home & student 2010 installation disc, etc.
What else can I do? With the problem being duplicated with another operating system is it safe to say this is a hardware problem (the combo drive is defective?)
     Thank You,

  • MacBook Pro 15" 2007 won't turn on after leaving Snow Leopard update in the drive

    Hi Everyone,
After installing Snow Leopard 10.6.3, I left the cd in the drive when I turned the computer off. When I tried to turn the computer back on again, the screen told me that I needed to restart the computer by holding down on the power button. So I did, but the message came up again. I did it again. The third time, the computer wouldn't turn on at all.
I removed the cd by opening up my computer--something I had done in the past because of problems with the keyboard. (The keyboard was never fixed, and the trackpad didn't work either, so I used USB connections. The powerbutton never was affected though)
    Two questions:
First, what would you say is the culprit in the first problem with the messages to restart the computer? How might I address this?
Second, knowing the secondary information about the keyboard connections, how might this affect fixing the problem? Could the powerbutton now be affected, especially since I lifted the keyboard off?
Lastly, I've looked into restarting the SMC, and turning on the computer without the button. I have tried the first of these two options, and will soon attempt the second (If anyone can send me a link to better explain turning on the computer without a button for my model, I'd be grateful.)
Any more advice (short of bringing it into the shop!) would be helpful.

Try powering up and push in your install disc(use your original install disk if you have it, maybe try the retail SL disc white with the cat as a second choice) holding the C key (this should make it boot from the disc) select your language, click continue, in the next screen in the menu bar click Utilities/Disk utilities, select (highlight your volume from the left column, default name is Macintosh HD, unless you renamed it) click the first aid tab, then click verify disk, if it comes up with errors (they will be in red font) if you get errors, run repair disk, run it repeatedly if necessary till it comes up with this disk seems ok (in green font)
    Then run permissions repair.
Log out and reboot see what you get.
You may have to reinstall the 10.6.3 OSX again, do this by powering up and pushing in the disk holding the C key and follow the prompts. if you have a successful install, eject the disc, and reboot. The next thing you need to do is run software update, there will be many and you want to do them one at a time. (use an ethernet connection as opposed to wireless, as there is much chance of corruptions. The first one to run is the 10.6.8 combined v 1.1, the keep running software update one at a time till there are none offered.
    Hope this helps

  • DVD Drive won't recognize DVD's or CD's

I just got a new, refurbished Mac Mini today. The DVD Drive will recognize only 1 out of the 3 install disks that came with the system. It tries to initialize 2 out of the 3 and just ejects them about 15 seconds after I put them in. I tried to put a blank CD in and it ejects it as well after about 15 seconds. I called Apple Tech. Support and they had me reset the system by holding down the power button for 10 seconds without any peripherals attached. They also had me try holding down the "Windows" Key, "Alt" Key, "R" Key and then the "P" key upon bootup (I'm using a Windows Keyboard). I couldn't get this to work though probably because I'm using a PS2 keyboard with a USB adapter, even though I can use the keyboard in the Mac GUI. Tech support told me if I can boot up with these 4 keys pressed this works 99% of the time in fixing most problems, but I don't have a USB keyboard yet to try it.
Now I'm downloading all the updates for 10.4.10 to see if that will fix anything per the advice of tech support. Is there anything else I can try before I take it to a local Apple Store?

For now can I install the Leopard Upgrade from a DVD drive on a PC on my network? Is it better to copy the whole disk from the network DVD Drive to my local drive and install it from there?

  • Drive won't recognize DVDs but will CDs

My Macbook (6months old) has stopped reading or recognizing DVDs. It recognizes CDs, blank discs, etc. fine but not DVDs. They do not show up on the desktop or in the Finder sidebar. It tries to open it a few times and then spits it out. This is a new occurrence. I used to watch DVDs all the time on it.
So, what I can gather is that a laser may be dirty or the drive may be dead somehow. It is not a problem with DVD player, front row, any type of system preference. I even downloaded VLC, to no avail. It is the drive that is not working.
Problem: I am living in Jerusalem for the year. There are no Mac stores or any Mac help in Israel. I need my computer, so I can not send it off for a few weeks to America to be fixed. But, by the time I get back to the states, my warranty will no longer be valid. Also, I have not tried to play an Israeli movie or any foreign movie in the drive. Only my movies bought in America that I have watched on the computer before.
What can I do? Is there any hope for some kind of other miracle cure? HELP!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Purchase AppleCare in Jerusalem. AppleCare is available worldwide, and AppleCare purchased anywhere will work anywhere else.
As for Israeli films not working, they are a different DVD region than that of the U.S. You may want to find a region free, or Israeli region DVD player to play Israeli DVDs on. To learn more about DVD regions see this article:
If U.S. DVDs don't work either, once you've purchased AppleCare, have your optical drive looked into for damage and/or dirt by an authorized service center.

  • CD Drive won't recognize DVDs

I just received an iBook G4 the other day and everything works fine except the CD drive. The computer recognizes it as a CD drive only. Not a CD-RW or a DVD drive. I put in a music CD and it works fine but when I put in a DVD movie, it thinks about it for a while, then spits it out. Any ideas?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I believe that some iBooks were produced with limited or no CD/DVD capability, possibly for the education market. What does System Profiler say about the drive? System Profiler can be found in the Applications/Utilities folder or accessed from the Apple Menu>About this Mac>More Info.
If the drive has got limited capability as suggested or is, indeed, faulty your best option is to get an external drive with the features that you want. Whilst the internal drive can be replaced it is not an easy DIY job.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • Mini combo drive stopped recognizing blank dvds

I have been using the same blank DVDs for a year now and they have just stopped working within the last two months. I insert the disk, the drive attempts to identify the media for a minute or so then spits it out.
I checked 20 odd DVDs and it's the same thing over and over. The drive still recognizes and burns CDs however.
Besides the standard Mac updates, I have recently started using Handbrake to pull my movies on my iPhone.
What do I need to check or reinstall to fix this issue?

oops, yeah. It is a superdrive. My bad.
I have never seen an error message.

  • Dont Dig The way the Drive sounds When CDs/DVDs Go In It.....

This is my second MBP I had the core dou 17 2.6 and now I have the Core 2 Duo 2.16 15" When I put in a disc man it sounds like something from an old sci fi movie with a robot arm moving like bzzz-zzzzzz-zzzzzzzzzz rrrrrrr ,etc. I guess you get the idea. My 17 inch didnt sound likr this one. anyone else have a real loud sound drive. I really dont care about the moise as much as I dont want to configure this computer how I need it to have it sent out for weeks getting fixed

    Gary
From generation to generation the sound of the Optical drives have gotten worse.
Mine works great, but isn't as quiet as my fiance's powerbook, and also sounds like it's "struggling".
    Regardless, it works flawlessly...
If the sound is that horrendous, see if you can set up an appointment at an apple store to have someone listen to it... shouldn't take but a few minutes and if it is something defective, they can repair in less then 1 day if the part is in stock.

  • CD Drive Won't Recognize DVDs or Burn CDs

I have a white MacBook. My CD Rom will read CDs and I can get content off of CDs. However, I am not able to burn CDs. It recognized the CD and the burn process starts, but then the CD is spit out. Also, it doesn't recognized DVDs, it tries to read it for a few seconds, but then spits it out. It's a three-year old computer. Is this a software or hardware problem? I don't have Apple Care for that computer so it would be nice to get some help on here.

    I'm completely stumped, honestly.
Are you backing up your data regularly? Are you using Time Machine?
Before you do anything more, try creating a new user account to see if discs work normally in the new user account.
If that brings no joy, I suggest using your install discs to do an Archive & Install (making sure to preserve user settings) and see if the problem clears up. After the install, do not install any updates right away.
If the problem persists after an Archive & Install you can also try an Erase & Install to completely rule out a software issue. If after the Erase and Install the disc drive still doesn't work properly, some portion of the hardware has failed and will need to be replaced.

  • Satellite A30 CDRW-DVDRW (Mat****a) drive can't recognize any dvd

    Hi!
    I own a Satellite A30-303 with a optical drive MAT****A UJ811 (CDRW-DVDRW).
Everything worked just fine until last week the drive stopped reading any DVD. A error message saying that there is some problem with E/S is displayed. CDs are recognized with no problems though.
I tried to find updated drivers for the DVD driver but I couldn't get any.
Please does anyone have an idea of what that might be and how to solve it??
    Thank you!!
    Alex

    Hello
On this way it is always not simply to say what the problem can be. Like littco wrote check if there is some virus or any kind of malware. It is also possible that there is some technical problem and the drive can not calibrate on the right way.
I really dont know what you mean with E/S but you can try to remove the device from device manager and restart the unit. The last thing that you can try is to reinstall the unit using recovery CD. On this way the unit will be absolutely clean. If the problem persist there is obviously malfunction and the drive must be replaced.
By the way; have the same opinion like littco.
    Bye

  • After ripping a CD, where does the file go?

After I insert a CD into the drive and click "import music" from the CD diretly into iTunes, where does the actual file go on my computer?
    I use windows XP.
If I rip a cd in windows media player or something else, the actual file goes to My Music folder, where does the file go when I do it in iTunes?
    HELP!

Thanks for the help, but that folder only contains music i purchased and downloaded from iTunes, it doesn't include music a import from CDs using iTunes.
    Can anyone help?

  • I bought an external hard drive in June (this yr) and it suddenly stopped appearing on the desktop. Disk Utility could see it. It wasn't the cord - now that I've tried that, the ext won't even turn on. I need that data off the drive BADLY! Help!!??

The drive stopped showing up consistently at first, then stopped all together. Disk Utilities could see it, verify it but not repair. I need it backed up. I took it to a local computer shop who tried a different cord. Nothing. When I got home, I read through several support forums dealing with this issue. One said I needed to zap my PRAM on my MacBook. I did so. Now the external won't even turn on! Any hope of getting the data off that drive? It is still under warranty but undoubtedly the firm will NOT attempt to back up the drive before issuing a new one. I downloaded something called TestDisk 6 that another forum suggested but no one offered any clue how to use it. I cannot figure the first thing to do with it! It appears to may be a Windows formatted program, anyway as most of the instructions end in the suffix .exe. I'm at a total loss...both personally as well as having already lost a complete week of business. Any suggestions would be appreciated but please note - I am NOT that computer literate. Just telling me to download something won't help me if I can't figure out what to do once it is downloaded. Also, taking this hard drive apart will void my warranty. Not that that is the biggest of my worries at this point but I wouldn't have the first clue anyway! I live in an area where we have something called Mac Authority in the mall and a Best Buy. Those are the only 2 connections to Mac-related stuff I have access to. Help!!! Please?

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.
