After rebooting from safe mode, the system doesn't come up.

I have a macbook pro (2011), and I had a problem with its fan which was always on. i made a quick search and found this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3787129?start=0&tstart=0
i applied the procedure explained by the last response by Linc Davis who suggested to boot in safe mode and check if the problem still exists. I did so and found out that the fan wasn't running in safe mode. However, after I restarted the machine to boot regularly, the os didn't start. I keep seeing the gray screen with apple logo and the process indicator. After one day, I still have the same problem. Can any body help me with this?
Thank you

Linc Davis who suggested to boot in safe mode and check if the problem still exists.
I keep seeing the gray screen with apple logo and the process indicator.
What occured is Safe Mode performed disk repairs that didn't fix your drive corruption.
When you rebooted normally, the at boot FSCK drive check fails to complete thus you see the gray screen with stuck progress bar.
Your next actions are as follows.
1: If you have a lastest backup of your files off the machine to a external storage drive or bootable clone, then your good to go. Have your boot drive replaced by Apple and restore from backup.
2: If you don't have a latest copy of your files off the machine and need data recovery off the drive, then first seek the services of a local PC/Mac software specialist.
Only having a TimeMachine drive for backup is problematic for the fact that it's data gets corrupted when your boot drive get corrupted, so it will either fail to restore or restore and your problems seem to reappear. You can lose all your files as many here have found out.
3: If your under AppleCare or warranty, most certainly have Apple replace the drive and check the machine out. However if your a tinkerer, out of coverage, you can replace the drive yourself in some models of Mac's and reinstall OSX and return files from the storage drive or the clone. (clones can be accessed for just the files without restoring a corrupted OS X/programs)
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
Reset your Mac

My password works fine when I turn the computer on, but when I try to wake it from sleep mode the computer doesn't recognize my password -- the same one I used successfully when I turned the computer on.

Okay, I seem to have solved the problem I posted about earlier.  I noticed that the language preference in the upper right hand corner of the screen (between the date and time and the Spotlight icon) had somehow gotten switched from American English to French.  When I switched it back to American English, my password worked when waking the computer from sleep mode.  I have no idea why changing the language preference would affect the way the password works but that seems to have been the case.  I'll post again if I experience more problems.

  • No reboot after booting into safe mode

For a few years I've just ignored the problem but thought I should take time to mention it now.
When I boot into Safe Mode (holding down the shift key during boot up) I can always click on restart when the password screen comes up and the computers will restart.
But if I log in after safe boot and let the system boot up past the login screen THEN try a restart I get hours of beach ball. I've left various computers running over night and it is always the same in the morning, no restart, no beach but lots of beach ball.
So I do a force shutdown (hold the on/off button for 10 seconds) or a forced restart.
This has been the case from Leopard OSX10.5 and up including Snow Leopard. And on five different Intel Core 2 Duo Macs including 2GHz & 2.4 GHz iMacs and Macbooks.
The common theme is that I have migrated my setup through all these Macs so maybe there is some legacy thing in my software.
    Suggestions?

    Well… some improvement.
Here’s what I did: (note that I did a restart and sometimes safe boot after each and every step.
1 – use FontNuke (free shareware) to blast away font cache files. It found 8 some dating from 2002.
2 – use Apple’s Font Book to reconcile duplicate fonts.
Those two steps fixed my slow down problems with playing movie files in Quicktime and VLC.
But not Skype video. The biggest CPU load with Skype is with the transmitted picture oddly enough.
Then for good measure I zapped the PRAM and PMU. No noticeable improvement from doing those. Obliviously repair permissions and verify disk was done long long ago and redone.
I still have the problem of not being able to reboot from safe mode.
The Startup folders are clean except for Qmaster which I do not believe is the cause of not being able to reboot out of safe mode.
Does anyone know of other files/locations that put 3rd party startup items? I remember finding things from Western Digital and Symantic a few years ago in unexpected places. Symantic was especially hard to track down and eliminate.

  • Black screen after waking from sleep mode - Compaq Presario CQ5110F

My mother's computer has been having the problem listed in the subject -- after waking from sleep mode, the monitor just stays black, and won't come back. After trying everything I could find online, I eventually found the bios update which claims to fix the exact issue. The problem is that I guess my mother had opted to upgrade to Windows 7, while the bios update seems to only work for Windows Vista, as I get the following error message: "Your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update. Update has been canceleld. (9998)." I've tried running the update in Vista compatibility mode, with no luck. I've tried using a different monitor, I've updated all the drivers, Windows Updates are all current, I've cleared CMOS. Any idea on how to fix this? It's very recent; only for about the past 2 weeks has this been happening, while we've had the computer for over 3 years. It's quite a waste of energy to keep it on all day.

    Hello liltwix,
When taking your computer out of safe mode the screen just remains black, is that correct? I will try to help you with this issue.
I understand you upgraded from Vista to 7, was that when the issue started or has the computer had windows 7 installed for some time before this problem started?
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

I tried to reboot in safe mode with Command+S and fsck, but after the steps to be taken, it says fscs not done, root device is read only. I also tried to bypass the Mac firmware password by taking one Ram card out and reboot the macmini while holding COMMAND+OPTION+P+R. But no luck. The macmini is not able to see the mac OSX installation CD.
    Please help ??

How and where did you change which permissions? And what was the goal?
Do you have a complete backup of your system? and more importantly data files?
What happened that prompted the need to reinstall the 10.6.8 update?
The immediate road forward would be to boot from the optical drive and revert the changes you made.
What happens when you boot with the install cd and hold down C or hold down the option key?

firefox installed automatically the latest version. Now my google browser, history etc. doesn't work anymore. It doesn't respond. I can't run searches from the browser. youtube button is missing. I've tried opening firefox in safe mode but that doesn't work

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

After using my browser (any of them) for a period of time I get a message saying that a page can't be opened. I have to reboot again. Clearing the cache doesn't help. It's very annoying. It even happened in the middle of a chat with Apple online support. I'd be very grateful for help!

Several things come to mind ... when you say your wife uses the same system with a different login and doesn't have issues, that suggests looking at your login items. Go to System Preferences (on your dock or on your hard drive in Applications), accounts, and on your account look at login items. Anything there that shouldn't be or isn't used? If you don't know, create a new account for yourself with no login items, and see if you still have the issue.
Next, I would run OnyX, which is a free disk maintenance program. You can download it from http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php . Do the tasks on the cleaning and maintenance tabs. Before using any disk maintenance software, you should have a system backup. I periodically run it, and others have found that it can help with performance.
You might look at how you're system is using memory. You should have enough but it's easy to check. Bring up the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in Applications/Utilities), and look at the system memory tab. Note page ins and page outs. If page outs are 10% to 15% more than page ins, you can use more memory for the programs you run. A page out occurs when memory is full and OS X has to write a section of memory to the hard drive. Too much of this can really impact performance. The optimal situation is for page outs to be zero.  Note these  values reset on a system boot.

  • Network issues after returning from sleep mode

I'm noticing this issue on T440, Twists, T420s, whether it's Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 7.  Sometime around the end of last year and the beginning of this year, my users suddenly started reporting problems with the machines after returning from sleep mode.  The network adapter (whether plugged in or using wifi), would show limited connectivity and would not connect to the internet until the machine is rebooted.
I've tried updating drivers, using system restores, disabling the network adapters from shutting down to conserve power, OS network diagnosis & network adapter resets, none of which has worked.  Hibernation is disabled on all machines.
The only fix I have is to reinstall the OS over the top of the system and reinstall all updates.  Looking for help with this issue.
    Thanks!

  • XP crashes when booting everything apart from safe mode

My PC (with K7N-ILSR mobo) has been running fine for ages. Suddenly now it's crashing when booting - it crashes for everything apart from safe mode. it also crashes on safe mode with networking. i've tried disabling the onboard LAN, unplugging the cable, etc without success. any idea what i can do to fix it?

    to dancing_bear,
try to resinstall the graphics card drivers in safe mode. this problem is likely due to corrupted graphics card drivers. if still fails, i suggest that u back up your data, then perform a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system.
if problem still persist after all these workarounds, then open up your pc chassics and observe all the cooling fans. make sure that are all working properly. (of course your pc has to be on) if any of the fan is not spining or spining very slowly, then its time to replace them. also not forgetting to check on the capacitors as well. they should not be bludging from the top or having brownish substances at the top or bottom of the capacitors. if you happen to see these, then send your motherboard for a recap.
    cheers

  • [SOLVED] After resume from suspend to RAM, system is slow / unstable

    Hello,
I have come across some strangeness when trying to suspend my system.  The
computer is a lenovo U350.  I have read a lot of threads on these subjects,
but I never found one that quite matched the experiences I'm having, so I felt
compelled to make a new post.
Here's what's going on:  I boot into the terminal, and then run pm-suspend.
Within a few seconds, the computer goes to sleep, just as I had hoped.  The
problem is that my computer seems a little groggy when I wake it back up.
Usually, when running a command like ps aux | less, the screen fills up very
quickly.  After I resume from sleep, running ps aux | less is noticeably slow.
It takes a full second (+/- epsilon) to fill the screen.  Other symptoms: if I
suspend / resume in the terminal, and then start a window manager (KDE), the
graphics will be slow and choppy, and when I try to exit the window manager, I
usually end up having to perform the dreaded REISUB after getting stuck on a
blank screen with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner.
Suspend / resume from KDE will result in either the black, non-responsive
screen as soon as I try to resume, or in the choppy graphics, followed by the
non-responsive black screen when I log out.
I looked at the process list before and after, and noticed that when the
system is first resumed, there are around 50-60 additional kworker processes
running than when I put it to sleep.  I don't know if this is normal or not.
Also, hci0 has been killed, and a new hci0 process has taken its place.  The
same goes for one of the udevd processes.  About 40-50 of the kworker
processes finish after a few minutes, but this does not change the slowness of
ps aux | less, nor does it help with my window manager issues.
I ran a few (not so precise) performance tests before and after doing a
suspend, and got the same results (the test was just to compile some LaTeX,
which took about 4-5 seconds either way).
I examined the pm-suspend.log, and everything looked peachy.  All of the
hooks returned success for the suspend, as well as the resume.  I'm happy to
post this if needed.  I did not change any of the default settings for
    pm-suspend.
Anyhow, I've read a lot of threads, and seen a lot of suggestions, e.g.:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=137682
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136292 (use vbetool?)
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126174 (suspend tons of modules?)
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=131827 (hpet=disable ?)
However, I'm not that confident in any of them, since no one had quite the
same issue.  I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction
before I start blindly walking through all the candidate fixes and risk
unleashing chaos into my system.  Many thanks in advance for your help.

I did try reinstalling, actually.  But I did not think to remove the battery and the ram...  I'm very curious now: what is the rationale / intuition for that?  Or is it just that empirical evidence suggests this may be a good idea?
Anyhow, the reinstall by itself did not help.  I tried it out with a pretty bare-bones setup and had the same results.  Here are a few other things I noticed:
    - After the suspend, one of the cores is always running at the maximum clock frequency, according to powertop (although, according to ps aux, no one is doing any work).
    - Even if I ssh to a nearby machine, I get the same experience when running `ls`.  The screen fills very slowly.  That narrows things down a little bit, but I was already guessing it would be graphics-related.
I have also tried a few random kernel boot parameters after reading things online, but none of those worked, and several stopped the machine from booting at all.
    Thanks for your help.

  • My MacBook Pro won't reconnect to my Wi-FI automatically after waking from sleep mode

Hello, everyone. Since I updated to Yosemite, my MacBook Pro won't reconnect to my Wi-FI automatically after waking from sleep mode.
Does anyone know how to fix that?
    Thanks in advance,
    Arthur.

    Hi, arthurpacifico.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are a couple troubleshooting steps that I would recommend trying to see if it corrects this issue.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If the issue persists, try the troubleshooting steps I have attached below.
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
After waking from sleep or starting up, your computer may not show that it is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
After start or wake, your computer may indicate that it is connected to a network, but does not connect to the Internet.
    Solution
Use these steps if your computer does not automatically connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Check your TCP/IP settings in the Network pane of the System Preferences. Click the "Renew DHCP lease" button
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Choose Network from the View menu.
Select Wi-Fi, then click the Advanced button in the lower-left hand corner of the screen.
Click the TCP/IP tab from the top of the screen.
Click the "Renew DHCP lease" button.
Select the Wi-Fi tab and view your Preferred Networks list.
Select each network and click the minus sign to remove those networks from your Preferred Networks list.
Click OK and close the Network preferences.
Remove your stored network passwords using the Keychain Access Utility.Restart your computer.
Open Keychain Access from /Applications/Utilities. Your window will look like this:
Remove your AirPort network passwords from the login keychain: Select the "login" keychain from the Keychain sidebar. Click the "Kind" column to order the list of keychain items by their type. Remove all entries of the kind: "AirPort network password".
Remove your AirPort network passwords from the System keychain: Select the "System" keychain from the Keychain sidebar. Click the "Kind" column to order the list of keychain items by their type. Remove all entries of the kind: "AirPort network password".
Note: The above steps will remove your Wi-Fi network passwords. If you do not know them, or if your network does not use passwords to restrict access, you should contact your network administrator.
Join your Wi-Fi network. You will need to enter your password for your network again if it requires one.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep in OS X after reboot from Windows

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit running on a BootCamp partition on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.3. When I first installed 7 last year, I initially had a strange problem in that the Mac wouldn't sleep (default settings) when rebooted back into OS X from BootCamp. If I did another restart in OS X, everything returned to normal. I never found a solution to the problem but after a while it went away and things worked properly. Now, after several months and for no good reason I can think of, the problem has returned. Everything works correctly in both OSs except for this. Any help would be appreciated.
    Clive

Tried repairing BootCamp in 7, no change, don't think there was anything wrong with it in the first place.
Here is a section of the log after reboot from BootCamp and it says "System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold)". This ONLY happens after a reboot from Bootcamp, after another reboot all goes back to normal. What could the "active remote login session" be?
    From log:
21/04/2010 23:08:56 kernel PM notification cancel (pid 16, configd)
21/04/2010 23:08:56 kernel IOPMrootDomain: idle cancel
21/04/2010 23:12:00 configd[16] PowerManagement configd: System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold).
    21/04/2010 23:12:00 configd[16] PowerManagement configd: tty sleep preventer: /dev/console
21/04/2010 23:12:00 configd[16] PowerManagement configd: System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold).
