After Repairing Permissions, "Warning: SUID file. . ."  So, is it a concern

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I don't what this means, nor even where to begin to find out. Thoughts.

Hi VALman, a list of repairable items are gone indeed. I used the OS on OCZ-V30GbSSD and the Home Folder from WD-1TbBC before by Leopard with this message then I login to a Guest Account change the Home Folder back to my OS drive with new UUID as well. Then fast user switching OK, new Finder window, run Maintenance software, shut down. Turn on, rename as previous and change back the Home Folder to the WD-Caviar. All this happened when I renamed the drive by adding new icon&name for "fun".
So I don't know if your system description is up to date, mine is Octo- Nehalem.

Any idea of what's causing these warnings? Is this a problem I should correct or worry about?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This looks like a carbon copy to the message I found after repairing permissions. It happened as well after installing Mac OS X Leopard. I verified my Startup Disk, it checked out ok. The reason why I did these repair and verification moves was because my Toast 8 crashed each time upon trying to start it up. I had no problems with it before, neither with any prior Toast version, down to Toast 2 (I believe, I started with Toast 2). When I installed the Leopard I did an upgrade only, not an "erase and install." I just dreaded to do a zillion re-installations of all applications. I hope somebody comes up with some good suggestions. Or is it possible that this has to do with those typical bugs that seem to be unavoidable at the release of a new system software?

    The ACL lines have disappeared.
Can anybody explain this? And should I be concerned?
    Thanks Chuck

Frankly, I think there are few to any warnings that Repair Permissions throws that you should be worried about, EVER.
People think repairing permissions "repairs" things. It really doesn't "repair" anything. It CHECKS permissions against a set of files which indicate what they were when things were installed. If these permissions were changed in some way (sometimes, this was done INTENTIONALLY), repair permissions will throw errors or warnings, which can be benign.

It sounds like you used the 10.5.1 update using Software Update.
Download the larger 110MB file of 10.5.1 directly from Apple and this will most likely take care of all but one SUID warning.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1051update.html
The remaining warning is normal and will cause no problems.

  • Permissions Problem:Warning SUID file?

    Hi guys,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but here it goes.
My Macbook Pro was acting funny the last 2 days and was really laggy when I was typing. So I ran a Disk utility to check permissions and verify the disk. There were a couple of things out of wack that were repaired and I'm not having that lag problem. However I ran across another one.
This is a message that came up when I repaired the permissions:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/lppasswd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Is this something that I should be concerned about?

    bigmouth227 wrote:
I have the same Disk Utility error messages, but I am also unable to start any of my Microsoft Office X applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). I was directed to "completely" uninstall Office and reinstall, and that has not resolved that issue.
Am I wrong to believe the two issues are related?
    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Yes, they are most likely completely unrelated. Many have these warnings.
You should post a new thread with your MS issue.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/lppasswd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
They are merely warnings. Search these threads for hundreds of these cases and explanations.
Everything was working with them till I was building a chart in Excel. Then the program "unexpectedly quit" and since nothing Office has worked. Anyway, after I started having the issue with the Microsoft programs, I ran Disk Utilities and produced these warnings.
The issue you have is with MS products. Reinstall the MS software.
    Go to this forum: http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Office/
Will/Would reinstallation of Leopard be the only way to resolve the issue?
It would be the worst way. Leopard is fine. Your Office is not.
Is there a 10.5.5 version of the installer so that I can archive and clean install?
I don't understand this question at all.

Can I upgrade to Snow Leopard without addressing the WARNING: items safely or do I need to seek professional help and clean up those issues before I upgrade? And what are those WARNING: lines trying to tell me anyway?
I truly appreciate any insight you may have to allow me to upgrade with confidence.

You can safely ignore those messages:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 and 10.6:

Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components.

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
