After restoring iPhoto library, iPhoto does not recognize library

OS 10.8.3
iMac 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5
iPhoto '11 ver 9.4.3
I had my iPhoto library on an external hard dirve that crashed.  I replaced the hard drive and restored the iPhoto Library from Time Machine (went into time machine, selected the last back-up, and selected restore).  When I opened iPhoto, it asked me to select a library.  I go to the hard drive and the iPhoto Library is there, but in light gray so I can not select it.  In the "Get Info", it list is as a package and says to open it with Terminal.  I tried to change it to open with iPhoto, but get the error message, "iPhoto is unable to open this library."  I click Rebuild, iPhoto thinks for a few mooments and then "quits unexpectedly".
In finder, when I click on "Show Package COntents", all of the photos, details, etc... are there.
Any suggestions on how to get iPhoto to allow me to actually select the library?
Thanks,
Adam

If you have room on the EHD select the next to last backup to restore and see if it can be recognized by iPhoto.
I'd also try this:  create a new empty folder, open the library with the Finder and move all of the files in the library into the new folder.  Now see if iPhoto will recognize the new folder as a library.
Alos download and run  iPhoto Library Manager  to see if it will recognize the library.
There's something going on that prevents iPhoto from seeing it as a legitimate library.  This screenshot shows all of the files in my iPhoto library.  The highlighted file is a result of using iPhoto Library Manage on the library and won't be in your library.

  • Restore from back up does not recognize time machine drive

My wife's hard drive in her 2010 MB Pro decided to give up the ghost a few days ago, so I purchased a new hard drive for her, booted from the Snow Leopard Install disc that came with the computer. However, after the installation is complete, when it gives the option to "Restore from backup", it will not locate the drive with the Time Machine Backups. The drive with the time machine backups is a dedicated 500 Gig Seagate External, that is set up on the network through our Airport Extreme. When I plug the drive directly into the computer, the drive doesn't even show up on the list. When I plug it back into the router it will recognize it as the Time Machine Disk, but will say "Connection Failed" when I try to connect with it. I have watched several youtube videos and read several blogs, and it looks so easy, simply click on "Restore From Backup" and bang! You're in business, but my drive and its backups won't even show up!
After going through with the intitial set up, I can click on the Time Machine Icon, and choose to view other Time Machine disks, and it shows up there, and I can see about two (2) years worth of back ups; however, each time I boot from the install disks, it still doesn't show up in the "Restore from Backup" mode. Migration assistant shows the files, but when I migrated them, it says that I do not have permission to view the files. Also, when I enter the Time Machine it only shows a blue folder with "Macintosh HD" on it, and when I try to simply "Restore" that folder, it will start transfering files for about an hour (Maybe get up to 10-15 Gigs, and then it will say that it cannot replace or over right "Systems", and then stop the transfer.
Thinking that some of the drives were from when we upgraded to Lion, I redownloaded Lion, and it is more of the same.
I am in a really tight spot here, because I have been faithfully using Time Machine Backups, and was told that if a situation like this ever occurred I would be good to go with a new hard drive, or even a new computer. We have about 80 Gigs (not kidding) of family photos on the computer, and those are precious to my wife, so if nothing else I would just like to get those off of the drive.
If anyone could provide me with any tips as to
    1) How to make Restore from Backup recognize the drive; or
    2) Migrate the files, but actually have permission to view them; or
    3) Any other way to Restore from Time Machine that I may be overlooking,
    I would greatly appreciate it.

Well the first thing you should do is have a local professional image the TimeMachine drive to another drive, then you can install Data Rescue on your computer and use that to read the 1's and 0's of the imaged drive directly and recover any files out of the morrase that is TimeMachine.
TimeMachine is a freaking eyecandy abortion, when it screws up, it screws up royally. However it's easy and better than nothing for computer newbies who tend to delete stuff by accident.
Computer professionals prefer "imaging" or "cloning" which makes a exact duplicate of a drive in every detail and accessability. Carbon Copy Cloner is the choice software for that.
If you not comptuer savvy or want to take a risk, then I'd advise you to get a local PC/Mac data recovery expert to recover your files, they are still on the drive and somewhat accessible, but if you fool around too much TM can delete them as it "copies" your present new boot drive. Then data recovery could cost thousands for platter dissection if the TM drive is overwritten/updated by TM software.
So to be safe, get profesisonal data recovery help, and not the clueless types at the Genius bar.
FYI, once a TM drive has been infected with Lion, you can't use it with SL.
So it's best to stop and get a image, then decide to play with the image or allow the pro's to recover your files before they are really gone forever.

  • IPhoto 9.6 Does Not Recognize .MOV files!!! - HELP!

Re: iphoto won’t import mov video
    in response to léonie
I just read the thread to which léonie pointed. (Thanks!)
In System>Library>Caches, I had a file named "com.apple.xpchelper.cache". That file showed a modification date of yesterday -- I don't know what changes this file. Quite likely it was the install of 10.9.5 that I did yesterday.
Now, I was lucky enough to have a clone of my system from 3-4 days ago. I copied the older (cloned) version of this file, which itself had a modification date of about a month ago - to the working system. (I first renamed the current "com.apple.xpchelper.cache" to be safe.)
Then, I restarted ... and everything works like before! All movies play, and I can import.
I am not sure at all why this happened or why the above has fixed things for me, but it seems it has!
I am very happy to have fixed this issue without having to do a system recovery, which always has hitches here and there, and takes a decent chunk of time no matter how "backed up" you are.

  • Can't email photos from iPhoto as server does not recognize user name or password

How can I fix this?  I use MS office outlook for mac 2011 - I don't seem to have problems otherwise, or on iphone.

That's not the problem. If you have Apple Mail, you have to separately configure the passwords for iPhoto as well. Even though you have entered your email accounts and passwords properly in the email area, you have to re-enter the correct passwwords for all the email accounts registered under iPhoto/Preferences/Accounts; make sure to save each password, then close iPhoto and reopen it. Then you will be able to send the pix!!
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • After upgrading to Lion , itunes does not recognize my ipad, ipod touch anymore.

Yesterday I updated to Mac OSC Lion on my original Intel Macbook (the first Aluminum Macbook) with 4GB RAM.
Today I had a run in with my ipad and ipod touch, both of whom are not being recognized by itunes anymore.
My ipod shuffle and classic are still being recognised and do sync.
I have read through the support pages and annoyingly even factory-reset my ipad, which cannot be used anymore due
to itunes not recognizing the device !
System profiler does show either ipod or ipad being connected to the usb port. Resetting of the devices did not help (see above)
Any clues to this inconsistent behaviour differentiating between classic ipods and ipod touch/ipad ?
    js.

update: It seems like the XCode update did interfere with itunes. I reran the XCode install this time with itunes not running. This seems to update all necessary drivers and Library items correctly.
After this IPad and IPod touch were working fine again.

  • Swapped hard drives, but now Aperture does not recognize library file

I just swapped out my MBP hard drive for a larger one. I used SuperDuper to restore the small HD to the new, larger one from a third Firewire disk.
Everything else is working fine, except that Aperture says that "The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again." every time I try to do anything meaningful with any file in my library.
    I have:
-Repaired permissions on the new HD with Disk Utility
-Tried several times moving the library file around to various places, telling Aperture where to find it each time, and restarting Aperture. Aperture finds the images okay, but I can't really do anything with them, as I get the above error message.
-Renamed my new HD, going through the Aperture Prefs, and re-specifying where the library lives, and then repeating the process with the HD named yet again.
Nothing seems to work for me. What else can I try?

    1. Are you using referenced or managed Masters?
    2. If using referenced Masters, have you tried reconnecting them via File>Manage Referenced Files...? What happens if you right-click on a thumbnails and pick 'Show in Finder'?
    3. If using managed Masters, have you done a Spotlight search inside the Library package (right-click on it in the Finder and choose 'Show Package Contents') to see if the master files are still in there?
Moving the Library and/or renaming drives isn't going to help without finding out exactly where Aperture thinks the files should be.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite, Thunderbird does not recognize email addresses: "syntax error" in recipient address. Fix?

After upgrading to IOS Yosemite, Thunderbird will no longer send emails to the contacts in my history file that drops down when I "write" a new message. I continue to get a return response that there is a syntax error in the address field of the message although I have tried both my stored emails and manually typed email addresses. What has been changed and how do I recover the use of Thunderbird's great program?
By the way, how do I eliminate out of date email addresses from popping up and populating email responses rather than the most current ones that are in my contacts? I now have to type each one in separately as the default options that come up are many out of date.
Thanks much for your great work. Mozilla and Firefox are the best.

Did you find a solution to this issue?  My mail server is doing the same thing.  I've tried six migrations now, and have a couple of tickets open, but they all have issues.  I have worked around all of them except the mail server problem.
I did some more digging; the problem appears to be that on a migrated server, it leaves all of your mail store in the old location, doesn't move it, and then doesn't appear to upgrade spam-assassin properly.  The net effect is that the mail server gets the SMTP communication, tries to pass the message into spam assassin, and then it goes south.
I see errors like this littered in the logs:
Jul 31 13:53:10 mail org.amavis.amavisd[5927]: bayes: cannot open bayes databases /var/amavis/.spamassassin/bayes_* R/O: tie failed:
Jul 31 13:53:10 mail org.amavis.amavisd[5927]: bayes: cannot open bayes databases /var/amavis/.spamassassin/bayes_* R/O: tie failed: No such file or directory
    Do you see anything similar?

  • HT5395 AFter installing IOS 7 Imessage does not recognize my Apple ID password.

Itunes and Icloud still recognizes my Apple Id password.  Whenever I try utilizing Imessaging on my IMAC it shows that the account is inactive and offline.  When I send a text message to another Iphone etc. from my phone and ipad mini it will only send it as a message (green bubble)  and not an imessage (blue). On my Imac, I am asked to sign in with my Apple ID password.  When I do I get an error message that says "server encountered an error processing registration, try again later."  This has been going on for a week now.

    Hi,
Did the repair of the Hard Drive involve the Mother/logic board at all ?
At OS X 10.8.2 Apple introduce a security measure that involves using the Mac's Serial Number.
It is held on the main board and can be read by the Apple icon Menu > About this Mac
Click twice on the current OS X level. It will change to the Build Number  (another way of counting the OS) and then to the Serial Number.
If the Number is missing you will have to visit an Apple Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) to have it put back.
