After shutting down my iMac last night, Firefox will not open this morning and I don't know why?

My iMac is set to open to my home page My Yahoo with Firefox browser. This morning my Firefox browser is not opening and I don't know why? It does open on my new MacBook Air as per usual. I click on the icon but it does not respond even though I have opened it. this has never happened to me before and I don't know why it's happening now. I did a clean reinstall but that didn't work. Now what?????? With the add-on Troubleshooter should I have asked this question on my iMac using Safari? I am on my MacBook Air asking it.

Actually it does open but nothing shows up. I can't use my iMac unless I use the Safari browser and I want to use Firefox! I'm at my wits end as to how to fix this. I have tried everything that troubleshooting has suggested on Mozilla support. Help!!!!!!!!

Since updating last time Firefox will not open new tabs unless I right click on a link. It won't open them via file or the tab at the top of the brwoser or usinf ctrl + t. Anyone know how to fix this?

I can press ctrl for a new tab but otherwise a new tab does not open. I actually need help regarding this new Synch which apparently will be in Firefox automatically in an upcoming version so I am asking how that will synch with people who use LastPass-of course because I use this very successfully and really am not eager to change the set up that I have in place at this time.
I have read through endless FAQ trying to find anyone else who has this question or concern but have found nothing. Can you please tell me how that service will get along with LastPass which does basically the same thing as Synch-it is probably spelled wrong as it looks wrong to me but if I click back to where this issue began, I will lose all of this question so please respond for the upcoming service synch.

I am an ordinary user and use FireFox on a Windows XP pro sp2 OS.
I can open and run FireFox by a variety of methods, and do not need to have any firefox: folders, files, or shortcuts on my Desktop unless I so wish.
I suspect you have a rather none standard installation. The quickest solution may well be to uninstall FireFox ( which you have presumably not been able to use anyway) and reinstall it. I would suggest; at least initially; you just use the standard default installation you are offered.
You will probably find this page of use, the [http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/3.6.13/releasenotes/ Release Notes], it includes links for downloading FireFox, and has advice and information about installing and downloading.
I am sure you will have further questions when you try to install but click on the blue link above and look at that page and then post back again and I am sure someone will try to help you.
I am assuming that you are already on the Internet with a browser such as Internet Explorer, and a broadband connection, or are you trying to install from a CD or something that has a FireFox install file on it. (if so what are you using, and what is the version of firefox)

• I can't begin to describe this, firefox opens to websites and I don't know why

PLEASE HELP I never had issues with this browser which I use almost exclusively. Now over the past week, I am having nothing but.
I have windows 7 pro 64 bit. Once again, I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox after it seemed to be going haywire. I set how I want it to look, and I want the toolbar to show, the "file, edit etc." and I usually don't have problems finding how to do that.
But yesterday those vanished, and I use them too much and I don't know what happened.
So after I uninstalled and re-stalled, that took care of it.
HOWEVER now this browser when I open it, I open a new tab, which should bring a blank page, it goes to the last site I was. I did not set it to do that.
1) Does anyone know how to stop that?
2) It does open to the home page IF I click on firefox, but a new tab should bring just that.
Why is this happening? That is my second question. Can anyone remotely be tampering with this?
How would that happen, if so, and how to I guard against it?
I DO NOT let this save passwords. I don't let any browser do that.
Last, my email on my phone worked just fine until Friday morning, the last time it synched.
Now I can't get emails on my phone because it says "password changed" -- what the f****? I didn't change anything, I am getting my emails on my notebook just fine, I have a pin on my phone so I can't fathom what is happening. This NEVER happened with my windows phone. I put in the password, and that was that. No issues.
That strays from Firefox, but it is an overall cause of problems of changes etc. that are making me very concerned. Yes I have macafee security.
LAST if someone had remote access, such as a tech with a company, and you end the access can the remote access ON THEIR END be re-connected?
THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance for help with firefox issue, and any insight on the others.
Gina

Hey Gina,
Change all your passwords, this will stop the remote access if there are any. Also check to make sure there are no third party apps managing your passwords. Also please contact the tech support for the phone for more technical help on that issue :-)
I also understand that the customization is not staying. [[Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars]]
Did this happen when you synced last? Also are there more than one device with different Customized ui settings?
Change the settings back from open "pages from last time" to the other homepage: [[How to set the home page]] or if this happened after you attached another device to the sync account, uncheck Preferences from the sync settings.

• Please help - Firefox will not open. library - applications - and no firefox is listed to get to my profile manager. . What's next?

firefox has been running slower. When this happens I'll reboot my computer and this speeds up firefox. When I restarted the computer firefox would not open. Just the spinning wheel with no access to the tools.
After I force quit - it says ignore or notify/report to apple. I tried sending a report, and it ques up the box with details, system config, etc... but when I click on send - it will not let me send one - I've never been unable to send a report before.
I uninstalled, then reinstalled. Upon opening I get the spinning wheel and nothing happens - I need to force quit. I see on this mozilla help site that I need to update my profile manager. I followed these instructions - Finding your profile without opening Firefox Open Finder and go to your home folder. Note: your home folder is usually the name of your Mac user account From your home folder open /Library/, then /Application Support/, then /Firefox/, then /Profiles/. Your profile folder is within this folder. but when I got to library - application support - there is no firefox listed.

You can do a disk check with the chkdsk.exe program.
If you run the chkdsk.exe program from a cmd.exe Command window then you can read the response from the chkdsk.exe program.
Open a cmd.exe window:
Start > Run: cmd.exe <press Enter>
At the command prompt (>) type or Copy&Paste: chkdsk.exe /f /r <press Enter> (put a space before /f and /r)
If you get something like: Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? y/n then answer the question with "Y" and close all programs and reboot the computer.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

• Firefox will not open on startup and takes over system resorces. Uninstalled. When attempting to reinstall, installer will not run from website, and can not save file to HD. No error message, it just never appears.

After a system reboot, Firefox would not open. I opened the task manager, and saw that Firefox was using alot of memory, and was using 50% of the CPU. I ended the process, and restarted. The situation just repeated several time.
I uninstalled Firefox using uninstall programs from the control panel.
I then tried to run the Firefox installer from the website, it would open the download window, then the "run the install" window. After clicking "Run", the window just closes. So I attempted to just download the install file, and clicked "Save". I tried to save the file to several different locations. A download window would open, and run, but the file would not be there.
I was running 3.6.12, the current version. And that is was I tried to install. After that failed, I also tried to install the beta 4, with the same results.
No error messages have opened, and I have run scans for malware/spyware, and didn't see anything that jumped out as a problem. I am running Win Explorer right now. And it is running fine, but I much prefer my Firefox.

Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
'''Note''': ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.''
*Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

After Firefox updated I cannot open any website but explorer can. I have done everything your help site suggested. I like firefox and would like to keep using it. Can you help? I am using windows vista 64 bit operating system.

After upgrading, sometimes your firewall will not recognize the new Firefox version and, therefore, not allow it to access the internet. To remedy that situation,
#you must remove Firefox from your firewall's allowed applications list,
#then restart firefox, go to a website, the firewall will detect the new Firefox version and
#then give the necessary permissions for your firewall to allow Firefox access to the internet

• Firefox will not open at all, and wen I try to uninstall it tell me that Firefox must be closed to proceed with te uninstall even though it is not open.

I click on Firefox and notihing happens. I have tried to uninstall the program so that I can reinstall it, but wen I try that, it tells me
"Firefox must be closed to proceed with the uninstall. Please close Firefox to continue."
But the program is not running. It won't let me open it either. I have college lectures that can only be viewed on Firefox, so I am not able to do my homework. Please help.

This may be a number of things, but conflict is most common, so here are some suggestions that may help you get to the bottom of the matter:
Be sure that a firewall is not blocking the startup of Mozilla. Some firewalls will come with "self defense" mechanisms for spyware/malware, but these programs can also isolate useful programs as well. Norton 360, Comodo Internet Security, Zone Alarm, AVG antivirus and McAffee Internet Security Suite incorperate these methods among several others.
Basic solution: To get around this type of blocking you will have to disable the self defense mechanism in your firewall or add an exception for firefox.exe.
In depth instruction for Windows users:
''''''This may be hard to follow, because the posting tool does not recognize spaces, but here goes...THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED.''''''
1)Open the mozilla browser. When nothing happens...go to next step.
2)hold CTRL, ALT and the DELETE key together. In XP you will get an immediate task manager window...Go to next step. Under Vista or Windows 7 you will get a login screen that has a START THE TASKMANAGER button at the bottom. You will push this button then go to the next step.
3)In the Windows Task Manager click the Processes tab.
4)Run down the list and find all occurrences of firefox.exe
5)right click each firefox.exe and from the drop down list choose End Process Tree then answer YES or OK to the prompt box.
Firefox is now closed...Now we can determine the issue.
6)Start firefox in safemode by clicking on START or the WINDOWS ORB to open the START MENU.
7)Choose ALL PROGRAMS or PROGRAMS
8)Find the MOZILLA FIREFOX folder and click on it
9)Choose Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode).
10)When the prompt box appears check the boxes next to the following:
a)Disable all add-ons
b)Reset toolbars and Controls
c)Reset all user prefrences to Firefox defaults
11)Click on the CONTINUE IN SAFE MODE BUTTON at the bottom.
If firefox opens, you have a plug-in that is causing your issue. If it does not then repeat steps 1-5 and then move on to step 12.
12)After all instances of firefox.exe have been ended, go to START and choose CONTROL PANEL from the start menu right hand side. XP users go to step 13...Vista users choose SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW on the left hand side then go to step 13...Windows 7 users choose USE LARGE ICONS from the drop down list at the upper right hand side then go to step 13.
13)Double click the WINDOWS FIREWALL icon (around the bottom of the list) and check to see if it is ENABLED. If it is not enabled, Enable it. Windows 7 and Vista users: Answer YES to enable this option ANYWAY, if you get a prompt warning of dual firewall conflicts then move on to step 14.
14)Find your security center icon in the taskbar, Usually next to the clock. Right-Click the icon and choose EXIT, DISABLE (Temporarily), or CLOSE.
15)Once you are sure that your Security Suite/Antivirus software is disabled, then Start Firefox in regular mode.
If firefox opens, you have a firewall or defense conflict and need to get your documentation to find out how to allow EXCEPTIONS to the software or internet access list. You can use firefox with these settings in the meantime, but you will not have antivirus protection. Free antivirus-only programs are available at the following locations:
-----http://antivirus.comodo.com/antivirus.php
-----http://free.avg.com
-----http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
NOTE: If you choose to use an antivirus only program in conjunction with windows firewall, you must remove any other antivirus programs from your computer and restart the system BEFORE you install the new antivirus software or you WILL have problems with your system SPEED and FUNCTIONALITY. Do so by going to START then choose CONTROL PANEL then choose ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS in XP or PROGRAMS AND SETTINGS in Vista or Windows 7 then find you program in the list. Right click it and Choose UNINSTALL or REMOVE. Be sure to RESTART the system BEFORE you choose to install the new software.
If NONE of the above has worked, then you very likely have a corrupted installation or your system may be comprimised by RootKIT or Trojan infection.
Please download and complete a full scan with the tool below. REMOVE ANYTHING IT FINDS then restart the system and remove and reinstall firefox then attempt to open it again:

Good Luck to all. I hope that his has been helpful.

For a few weeks now, I've been getting the "Bookmarks and history system will not be functional..." message. When I clicked for more information, FireFox would freeze.
I found a solution about a new places database, but for the past few days I can't get FireFox to open at all. Then my whole system is frozen and I have to turn it off to get it going again, thus losing a lot of unsaved data.
How can I get FireFox back?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

This was one of my first results on Google searching for this problem, so I thought I should give it a reply now that I can reply from Firefox.
I'm really not sure what fixed it. One of the pages I read when I was reading about mswsock.dll suggested any issues with it might be caused by spyware or a virus. This seemed likely since I'm running a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit and had yet to protect it. I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and when I restarted my computer to finalize the install of MSE, Windows updated. When I got back into Windows I immediately started a scan, but the second thing I did was try to open Firefox, which actually opened. So three possible fixes:
-Merely installing Microsoft Security Essentials. Least likely to have fixed it.
-Updating Windows. More likely to have fixed it, but still doubtful.
-Restarting my computer. Most likely to have fixed it. It seems to me that rebooting hasn't been a magic fix since I ran Windows 98, so I often forget to try it, but honestly most of the time that's all a computer needs is to be turned off and on.
Good luck.

• Firefox will not open this webpage; Safari will. Opera will Why?

Firefox won't open the site. Safari and Opera will. It's just a basic Facebook page accessed from GOOGLE.

It would be helpful to know what page you land on when your browser does not open the expected page.
Have you perhaps allowed Google to set a cookie with filtering options? Go to [http://www.google.com/preferences Preferences for Google] and check on your filtering levels. Also check to see that you are not blocking that page by accident in other filtering software like Adblock and NoScript. The page opens fine for me in three different version of Firefox on 3 different platforms, Mac included.
