After smc firmware update 1.1 fans keep running. Tried resetting but no luck.

After the update it shows as not installed and fans run continousl.

This is a major isssue for me as well. No fan noise whatsoever when I first got the machine and used for a few days. Right after the SMC firmware update fan runs continously at 1200RPM, but it is now auidble versus being virutally silent as before the update was applied.
Please let me know if you have contacted Apple regrading this issue and if so, what they have said.
I have started a thread on Macrumors where you can find out some further information.

  • IMac fan keeps running despite resetting the SMC

My iMac fan keeps running loudly even when the computer isn't doing any thing, and I just started it up.
I have tried resetting the SMC and that didn't help.
I also recently had to insert a new hard drive instead of the old one that failed. I am thinking that either the SSD is just hotter than the old hard drive, or that the hard drive sensor is somehow inverted in the plug. Is there any way of testing the hard drive sensor to see if that is faulty, or to test the fan. When I look at the Activity Monitor the system is 87% idle...

Although you don't mention which imac you have since 2009 Apple has used hard drives with the temp sensor built in. When replacing one of these late model drives you have to use the same type hard drive or you get fans running all the time because the temp sensor isn't detected. You might want to try some third party software such as iStat Menus, SMC Fan Control or HDD a Fan Control. Google them for reviews.

  • MacBook hanging on grey screen after SMC Firmware Update

Hi, I'd be very grateful if someone could offer some help with my current problem.
I have a black macBook to which this morning, I applied the SMC update. After restart, I heard a chime and the grey screen came up - all good so far......
.....except 20 minutes later, the grey Apple screen (with rotating progress thing) is still there, awaiting the lovely blue screen which just doesn't want to appear for whatever reason.
Tried resetting PMU, zapping PRAM with no joy.
    Any help gratefully received.
iMac 20inch Rev. B and Black MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I had the same thing happen to me while updating my girlfriends macbook last night..
I started off by booting my 17" mbp via firewire from her machine, and repairing disk / permissions.. didnt work, I tried booting her HD from my MBP and it spun forever too. did the PMU reset and Pram too ( 3 times ), no change..
Solution: Archive and Install and then re-patched everything...
the macbook works now and the SMC firmware installed perfectly this time.

  • Weird problems after SMC firmware update

    Hi,
So I have a MacBook Pro bought in July 2007. I installed the new firmware update yesterday and noticed today that my computer gets a lot warmer. If I try to run an application that does more processing, some buttons on my screen turn black, I can't move windows and the backlight starts to flash like crazy giving me a nice disco effect if I turn the lights off.
/var/log/system.log will show stuff like the following:
    Jun 2 20:33:59 edvard-fagerholms-macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x1 = Fifo: Fifo Method Error
    Jun 2 20:34:00 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: 0000000b
    Jun 2 20:34:15 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVChannel(Display): Graphics channel timeout!
    Jun 2 20:34:15 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x1 = Fifo: Fifo Method Error
    Jun 2 20:34:15 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: 0000000b
    Jun 2 20:34:59 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVChannel(Display): Graphics channel timeout!
All my problems started after trying an application written in Java, which seemed to require lot of processing power and made my computer very warm. After this I have also been unable to get my DVD drive to read any DVD. If it turns to be the update, I am pretty ****** of that they release an update that can physically kill a perfectly well working computer. Especially, when it's already out of warranty.
Does anyone else experience any similar problems?

I am pretty sure it's the graphics even though the Apple "genius" claimed it wasn't. The genius told me the RAM chips were broken. Ok, so I bought new RAM, the computer booted up, worked for about 30 minutes and the problem came back.
However, the computer boots up flawlessly to single-user mode by pressing apple-s during boot (even with the old RAM), so I can access the disk and use it as a typewriter in the console... I also coded a poor mans memory tester that allocated memory and wrote random stuff to it, and it worked fine with my old RAM chips. If I try to start the machine normally, then according to the logs, the computer freezes at the exact moment when it's starting up the login screen. If I assume correctly how OS X works, I would suspect that this is the moment it switches from some kind of a video BIOS framebuffer mode into an accelerated mode provided by the nvidia graphics driver.
I also noticed after using the root console in single-user mode for about 30 minutes (I was making a Linux USB stick to start it through rEFIt, to do some further diagnostics) that the black console background had these faint blue horizontal lines going from the top of the screen to the bottom. This is usually a sign that the graphics chip is busted.
It seems like it's time to get a new appointment in the Genius Bar.

  • Norton Live Update after SMC Firmware Update

It freezes my screen when it's trying to "update everything" (the cursor still moves but nothing can be clicked). alt + apple + esc doesn't bring up the force quit dialog, i have to manually press the power button to shut it off.
does it have anything to do with disk repair permission or something?
i don't have any trouble with boot and reboot though

    Hi Resno,
Click the link and you'll be taken to MacFixIt, where you'll read that Symantec are aware of the crashing problem, and how they are in the process of fixing it. http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060517112611193&query=norton
With regards to anti-Nortoners (whose comments are actually amusing !), if Symantec is unfit for Macs, then why in the previous issue of MacFormat magazine, did they have a competition to win 1 of 20 copies of Norton AV 10 ? Also, why, in this month's MacFormat, the UK's best-selling Mac magazine, have they given a decent write-up about Norton AV ? A specialist Mac magazine favoring a, as what some have called, a 'virus' ?!
We are all entitled to an opinion and I am not having-a-go at people who dislike Symantec. However, Resno has a point when he queries if the anti-Norton brigade have actually installed and tried Norton AV, rather than just reading critisisms about it.
Once again, though, to all who hate Norton, with your slanderous attacks on the product, I would like you to know that your crazy comments bring a smile to my otherwise miserable face !

  • Battery Life and the 1.4f10 SMC Firmware Update.

Since the 1.4f10 SMC Firmware Update makes the fan to run constantly at a low speed, will that affect the battery life?
Anyone notice any big decrease on battery life?
    thanks.
    Lok

The fan should account for a pretty small amount of total energy consumption in any notebook computer (my guess would be about 2%) - but that assumes it kicks on once in a while and not running constantly.
Since the upgrade, my fan has been running non-stop while on AC with peripherals plugged in, but not as much when I disconnect everything and run on battery. I think the battery is driaining faster but I do not have good data pre-upgrade. It would be great if someone could post a pre and post upgrade battery performance test. If you do, make sure to do a callibration first: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284

  • IMac SMC Firmware Update 1.1 will not load. Help!

I have just purchased an iMac with a Fusion drive. The App Store tells me to install "iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.1." I have tried to do so several times, leaving the computer alone until it restarts itself. But the update does not seem to have taken place: the udate is listed among the updates accomplished, but it continues to appear at the top of the screen as the available update and the badge for an update still appears in the App Store icon.
Any suggestions? Is that a faulty upgrade? Have I got an faulty Mac?

But isn't the Fusion drive in part a flash drive?
And if I don't need it, how do I dismiss it? Will my App Store Icon forever have a red badge telling me I have an unneeded update to install?

  • Ix4-300 fan keeps running full blast and the NAS never comes online

When I turn on the ix4-300 after a couple of seconds its fan starts running full blast but the NAS never comes online.  The NAS lcd was damaged in the move so I don't know what is going on, it was working fine for a couple of weeks (with the damaged lcd) but this started happening a few days ago.  Things that I've tried:
Used the other ix4-300 (I've 2) with the faulty NAS... same result
Let the NAS run with full FANS for 4 plus hours ......, Still didn't come online
Also both the blue and white light are constant .... no blinking whatsoever.
    Any ideas ...

It could be the device itself. Is it covered by the warranty?
Are you concerned about retrieving the data or do you just want the device back up and running properly?
If you are not concerned about data, you can try the following procedure at your own risk:
Power down the device and reseat all the drives in the device. Power the device back on.
If this doesn’t allow unit to boot, continue with below process.
       1. Turn off the device and pull out all the drives.
       2. Place any other drive 2, 3 or 4 in the first slot and boot up the device.
       3. Wait for sometime as the boot-up process can be slow.
             a. If it doesn’t boot, try another disk in slot 1.
       4. If it boots up correctly, insert another disk in slot 2.
            - Check UI for disk detection.
            a. If second disk is detected, turn it off, place disk 3 and 4 in unit and boot up.
            b. If it doesn’t boot-up correctly, remove 3 or 4 and retry. You may need to try to determine if 3 or 4 is bad in this case.
       5. Recreate the volume if it doesn’t start regenerating automatically

  • Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 keeps repeating

Recently I had my MacPro motherboard replaced by an Authorized Repair Center, and for the most part, everything has been working great since.  That said, as I've been performing my regular software updates, I've noticed that the "Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1" keeps appearing as new update.  I've installed this update multiple times now (or it seemed as though I did), but it keeps appearing with each new update.
Is there some way I can complete the update?  Is it possible that there is some serial number conflict between my old/new motherboard that is preventing this?  Do I need to return my machine to the repair center?
    Thanks for any help.

Did you actually run the update from your Utilities folder (where I believe it ends up)? You'll go through a process of rebooting and hearing the long tone / seeing grey screen and progress bar. Until it's actually run properly, you'll keep seeing reminders.

  • SMC firmware update 1.7 still reports previous version after successful installation

In the past months or so I've tried multiple times to install the SMC firmware update 1.7 on my macBook Pro. And every time, after the update, the SMC version is reported as the previous version, resulting again in the indication that a 'new' SMC firmware update is available.
My macBook Pro model identifier is:    MacBookPro8,2.
The reported Boot ROM version is:       MBP81.0047.B27
The reported SMC firmware version is: 1.69f3
This last version must be '1.69f4', which is SMC firmware update version 1.7.
So, I download the firmware update (.dmg), I install it, and then I check what the new reported SMC firmware version has become. And see, there it is: 1.69f3. Still not 1.69f4.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO GET TO THE NEW FIRMWARE VERSION AND ALSO HAVE THE SYSTEM REPORT IT AS THE NEW ONE?

I guess I just fixed it.  Do you bootcamp to windows?  Once I changed my startup disk from the windows to the mac partition, rebooted, then dd the system update, the firmware update installed and took hold.

  • Running Mavericks after Yosemite firmware update?

I'm presently running Mavericks (v10.9.5). About five weeks ago, I decided to take a look at Yosemite. I downloaded the Yosemite (v10.10.2) installer, and manually installed it onto an empty scratch partition on my Mac's internal HD. The first segment of the installation was a firmware update that took several minutes to complete. After the installation was complete, I booted into Yosemite and toyed around with it. I didn't feel comfortable with the new UI, and decided to keep using Mavericks for the time being. The thing is, since then I've been running Mavericks on a system which has the Yosemite firmware installed. When my system has glitches, it makes me wonder if the updated-for-Yosemite firmware might be involved. So, then, my questions:
Exactly what firmware changes are made when installing Yosemite (v10.10.2) on a machine previously running Mavericks (v10.9.5)? And might any of these firmware changes cause issues when subsequently running Mavericks?
My system happens to be a Mac mini (mid-2011), but model-agnostic answers to these questions are welcome.

  • Having problems with SMC Firmware Update 1.8

I installed the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.8 yesterday and have since experienced a number of problems. I am running a 15 inch, Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, btw. First, after the intial install the sytem would not reboot. I had to do a physical reset of the SMC controller to get the system to power on again (sft-cntl-option-power key sequence). Once the system rebooted, the fan in stuck on high and the battery meter in the controll bar does not show status, just displaying an "X" in the battery.  I went into the Software Update utility and the SMC update is still listed as available, I tried reinstalling it, and the situation has not changed. The fan noice is annoying and I'm aftraid to disconnect the laptop from the AC adapter. Please advise.

Firmware updates don't affect to Windows and OS X. The firmware makes your hardware work, not the operating system, so you won't have any problem doing this
