After software update: kernel panics on Airport Extreme

http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=337100
Exactly the same problems as mentioned in the thread above kernel panics, etc. How could this have passed Apple Quality Checks?

Just by enabling the airport express card, the above error fills up my panic.log. Now I wonder what triggers the bug? Because I rebooted several times after the update. One thing I did see was the signal strength going less strong in the past days. Since today I cannot use it at all.

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000A8800): Uncorrectable machine check: pc = 000000003931288C
That is an uncorrectablehardwarecheck type panic and the Program Counter (address: 000000003931288C) on CPU matchs with the closest value "com.apple.iokit.AppleAirPort2(405.1)@0x392f4000" followed by a typical events in relation with an AirPort card logical failure:
AsyncSrc = 0000000000000000, CoreFIR = 0000000000000000
L2FIR = 0000000000000000, BusFir = 0000000000000000
There is a problem on async program in the computer and the connecting network node with Mach port (=socket)-- not synchronized by a common timing signal. An exception problem also occurs on the core/L2 cache and bus Fault Isolation Register (FIR) on the CPU.
More importantly, you will please see CVE-2006-6292 (under review) :
http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6292
The Apple should be working with it. So here is my recommendation:
1. Data backup.
2. Erase and Install by Zero Out Data for Security Options...
( This is for your risk contorol.)
3. Install Mac OS X 10.4.x to update to 10.4.8.
4. Perform the major updates except the AirPort Extream firmware.

  • Airport connection problems after software update

I cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network I have been using for days. This happened after installing software updates for quicktime, itunes, airport extreme, safari and Security Update 2008-002.
When i run network diagnostics, it tells me this network needs a WEP or other password. It doesn't. My wife's macbook pro, on which we have not installed the same updates, connects perfectly, just as my macbook did.
Any thoughts pls? Can i uninstall the updates, or restore my laptop to a few days ago, as you can with windows?
    Thanks

You know... that might just work, but you have to find the .pkg in Library>Receipts that prevents you from running the older one, like maybe "AirPortSW.pkg" or something close. That's were it liooks to see what it can install.
(If it works, you could log in with a New Alias and give yourself a Solved Star, while being able to drop an Alias that is on the edge of being eliminated, or at least not going to get answers from many helpers here).
The other mention was a way to manually do it by finding the kext in a combo or security update!

  • IMac 10.10.3 crashed completely after Software Update - Wouldn't boot

    Hi,
My iMac Desktop crashed completely and would not startup after software update. I accidentally clicked on the software update and now the desktop is completely dead. It does boot into "Safe Boot" mode upon click the shift button, in the Safe Boot, the keyboard and mouse is hangs and can't type anything in the username/password. Lastly, I tried command line but can find Crash logs in the CrashReporter as pasted below.

  • Natd stopped working after Software Updates: Bogus VLAN injections?

Software Update installed three packages on the iMac today:
    Safari 3.1 Update (Universal)
    Security Update 2008-002 (Universal)
    AirPort Extreme Update 2008-001
This machine (running 10.4.11, fully updated now) is my connection-sharing gateway the internet for my wife's MacBook, a Linux box and a TiVo unit.
Comcast ==(ethernet)== public-IP iMac ==(wireless)== private IP MacBook, Linux, TiVo
I ran my usual firewall + Internet sharing script after the mandatory reboot.
The iMac's broadband connection worked fine for local programs (Safari, ssh) but none of the machines with private IP addresses on the LAN could see the outside world. The machines on the home LAN could see each other fine -- ping, ssh, etc. Time to start testing!
When I pinged an external machine from the Linux machine, the DNS lookup succeeded after a delay, but it seemed that no ICMP responses came back. Actually, packet tracing with Wireshark showed that the responses had come in with an extra four-byte header field I had not seen before: something called "802.1Q Virtual Lan" inserted between the Ethernet II header and the Internet Protocol header. Sample packet dump (slightly edited):
     No.:  20
     Time:  00:04:56.746703
     Source:  64.233.187.99
     Destination:  192.168.1.2
     Protocol:  ICMP
     Info:  Echo (ping) reply
Frame 20 (102 bytes on wire, 102 bytes captured)
     Ethernet II, Src: AppleCom_54:1b:30 (00:17:f2:54:1b:30), Dst: FirstInt_94:75:8f (00:40:ca:94:75:8f)
      *802.1Q Virtual LAN*
         *001. .... .... .... = Priority: 1*
         *...0 .... .... .... = CFI: 0*
         *.... 0000 0000 0000 = ID: 0*
         *Type: IP (0x0800)*
     Internet Protocol, Src: 64.233.187.99 (64.233.187.99), Dst: 192.168.1.2 (192.168.1.2)
     Internet Control Message Protocol
Looking further back in the trace, it turned out that the DNS delay had the same oddity. The Linux machine sent out a request to the primary DNS server, got back an immediate response with the extra "802.1Q" field, waited 5 seconds, sent out a DNS request to the secondary server, got an immediate normal response (without "802.1Q"), then immediately used the returned numeric address for the pings. It's as if the Linux machine ignored the packet with the extra, interposed header.
I traced HTTP traffic to google.com and saw a similar pattern:
    1. bogus 1st DNS response
    2. delay
    3. good second DNS response
    4. sent HTTP SYN packet
    5. got back HTTP SYN/ACK with extra "802.1Q" field
    6. multiple retries of steps 4 and 5.
I suspect that one or more of the software updates is inserting this VLAN stuff into NAT-ed packets over Airport. The receiving machines drop the packets because they expect the Ethernet II header to be followed by the IP header, not 802.1Q data.
An old discussion thread ([VOIP VLAN using 802.1q frames causing massive dropped packets|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=378673#1833386]) talked about a similar problem.
Here are the NAT-related commands from my firewall script:
      natd -u -dynamic -interface en0
/sbin/ipfw add divert natd all from not me to any via en0
      sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1
Question: is there a known workaround to get the MacOSX network drivers not to insert 802.1Q VLAN headers?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello faab:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I am afraid to indicate that you probably will need to wait until you are back and have the software install DVD.
There is really no way to tell what happened. To fix it, however, you really need the DVDs.

  • USB Audio stopped working on 27" ACD after software update 1.0

    Hi all,
My 27" ACD worked flawlessly until I installed 27-inch LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0 earlier tonight. I have a unibody MacBook Pro that doesn't output audio from the mini displayport, when I got the ACD Friday, USB audio output worked fine. I also have a 24" ACD and audio worked fine on that as well. But after software update 1.0, I can no longer get audio output of the 27" ACD to work via USB, I even rebooted my Mac and it still doesn't work. After trying it a few times in Sound.prefPane, I now can't even select the "Display Audio - USB" option (when I click on it it reverts to the other option right away).
From /var/log/system.log, I believe this is the error related error message:
System Preferences[332]: Error ^P trying to set sOut device to 264
    Message was edited by: ayn

I have this problem too. I have the 27-inch LED cinema display connected to my Mac Pro 1,1 via the Radeon 5770. I also suspected it had something to do with the machine going to sleep, but the audio doesn't disappear every time it goes to sleep. Unplugging the monitor fixes the problem.
I also noticed that when the sound has went away, if I try to change the volume there will be a long delay before seeing the volume-change graphic. Also, toggling the sound device in System Preferences while the problem is in effect is unresponsive, sometimes giving the beach ball. Finally, this message is seen in console logs when the sound has went away:
    10/19/10 6:01:22 PM kernel USBF: 75053.200 AppleUSBEHCI[0xf3d0800]::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5 seconds on bus 0xfd, timing out! (Addr: 5, EP: 0)
I can make this message appear on demand by attempting to change the volume.
If (when) this happens again, I'm calling support.

  • Problem restarting after software update

Computer is fine, drive 40% full, no speed problems...
But it just won't restart after software update runs, nor will it restart or shut down from finder.
Problem solving so far: Safe boot, reset pram, ran disk utility, ran disk repair using install disk, ran fsck -y, ran disk warrior.
Is annoying. ANy ideas anyone? If not, what is the procedure for updating using sudate and terminal, as when I use software update, a force shut down will not install.
    ANy ideas folks?

    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

Hi. Good day to everyone my New iPad with retina display 30 pin connector will not mirror to TV even with divi adapter after software update. Adapter works fine. Or is it a software glitch with IOS 7.04? I've tried resetting and reconnecting nothing seems to work.

That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it...

  • IPhone went bad after software update - iPhone 5 is now stuck on Itunes connect and has vertical lines

iPhone went bad after software update - iPhone 5 is now stuck on Itunes connect and has vertical lines.
I found a video on youtube with similar issues - http://youtu.be/Xuuqxx18-bA
EVERYTHING HAS BEEN TRIED: Restore, Reboot, Recycle, Replacing Cables, etc....
I don't have Apple Care, what to do? Spend more money and buy a new phone?

Here is another person who has a problem with the iPhone 5 screen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc1ZPWSA8dc and they have just received them NEW!!!!!
I myself, two days ago purchased a  2nd hand iPhone 5 that was advertised as having a line of squares at the bottom of the screen. I Googled it and found people saying it was a screen issue and to replace the screen, so I did this and it is still happening with a new screen.
I am starting to dislike Apple intensely after reading forum posts and watching videos where people are asking for help and telling us about issues that they are having with their phones.
Why is Apple getting it so wrong with their updates and manufacturing that they are completely destroying iPhones that cost a lot of money and then expecting the owner to purchase another phone unless they are still in warranty.
Apple you should be going out of your way to put things right for people but instead there is a wall of silence over so many of the issues destroying peoples phones.
    SHAME ON YOU!

  • Internal camera failure after software updates...first skype couldn't......

    Hello!
I am having internal camera failure after software updates...first skype couldn't find the camera, and now photo booth also says camera is not connected. Its a brand new MacBook Pro which has been working fine for a month, but after a software update (the blinking message said i had 13 new things to update...you know what I'm talking about right?) all of a sudden Skype couldnt find a camera, so i went to the skype community and tried some things (like trashing skype) but now photo booth says no camera detected, which is weird cause the camera is built into the computer..
    Please help!
    Thanks
    O

    First, reset the SMC:

If that doesn't help, then take it to an Apple Store for examination.

    Hey iftekhar,
Welcome to the BlackBerry® Support Community Forums.
I would suggest backing up doing a clean reload of the BlackBerry® device software as shown here: http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/KB11320. Please test before restoring any data to the device.
If this resolves the issue do a selective restore of essential data (Address Book, Calendar, Task, Memos, BBM contacts etc.)

If the issue still persists after the reload, further investigation might be required. To help further diagnose the cause, contact your wireless service provider or BlackBerry® Technical Support Services for further review and support.
    Thank you.
