After spilling a liquid on my PowerBook I can't seem to start up normally

So earlier today I spilled water onto my 15 inch PowerBook G4 (tiger), causing the scariest feeling I've ever felt. The screen flickered black and white so fast.. and the num lock and caps lock keys started flashing rapidly... it just scared me so bad. I think it's the scariest thing I've ever encountered in my life ._.
I turned it upside down to let the water out, and set it against a fan, hoping it would dry and power could be restored. Fortunately, it worked.
But...
Now I turn it on, and it spends 3-4 minutes at a gray screen with that cycling icon. Eventually, it starts up -- but it's in Safe Mode/Safe Boot. Apple's pages says if this happens, I should be able to restart it again without it being in Safe Boot mode. But it deosn't... it keeps starting up in Safe Boot Mode. So I tried starting up from the disk, holding 'c' while I restart, with the tiger install disk inside. Still starts up in Safe Boot mode, and there's noa ccess to Disk Utility. Actually, there is, but only from the applications menu in the Utilities folder. That didn't help me. I don't think it even started up in system mode.
I have no idea what to do, and I could use some help! ;/

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release the keys when you hear the second startup chime. If this procedure does not allow the computer to start up normally, you may not be able to fix the issue on your own.

How can I have the first letter after a sentence ending period automatically capitalize?  Can't seem to figure it out...thanks!

You need to fix capitalization in Pages Preferences > Auto-Correction. When you select this option, you can just keep typing in lower case and the first letter of the next sentence will automatically promote to upper case.

  • Powerbook G4 can't seem to connect to the internet.

My powerbook won't connect to the internet with a good airport connection.  Access to the internet with my other macs work fine on the same network (airport). Doesn't seem to work with the hard ethernet connection either.  Not sure what to do next?

If you have a wireless signal but get a message about being unable to find the server, reset your PRAM and PMU.
    PRAM reset:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

PS. It's really best to open your own thread for your issue, so trying to solve multiple, albeit related, problems in one discussion thread doesn't get confusing.

  • My printer properties will not open after I downloaded firefox 4.0. I can print, but only in the normal mode.

I can not open properties to select a fast draft copy. The printer works normally in internet explorer. I had to reload firefox 3.6 to have it work. It is a dell printer 960.

You can get Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5

  • Blinking Caps Lock and Num Lock Keys Lit after spilling water Macbook Pro.

What does it mean when the caps lock and Num lock key blink, after spilling liquid on a Macbook Pro? Does this mean that liquid is still present? Also, the white light by the latch was blinking. What does this all mean?

    Possible liquid damage.
Immediately disconnect all peripherals, power cord & remove the battery. Turn the computer over with the lid partly open and the hinge facing upward to let the liquid drain. Do not flop it over and lay it flat - you want to separate it from the moisture. Place paper or cloth towels under the machine to sop up the mess.
After the computer disgorges whatever you spilled on it, don't turn it on for 72 hours or longer. You want to computer to dry out completely before turning it on again.
Some users here swear by hairdryers. Blow drying the innards may bake whatever was in the liquid onto delicate computer components. Better to let the computer air dry.
Use plain tepid water to clean out the computer. If you spilled iced beverage more than likely this ice fried the hot motherboard.
Sugary, acidic or milky drinks will almost always cause problems later on as the residue starts slowly corroding the computer innards.
Swab down any sticky parts with distilled water or denatured alcohol.
If none of the above works, you will need to take the computer to a repair shop. Apple Care does not cover liquid or food damage. Believe me, they can tell. So the old "my computer stopped working" line is not going to work.

  • I bouhght my computer a week ago and I spilled a liquid on my keyboard , and i would like to know how much coast to repaid the damage , i didnt buy in the offical apple shop.

i bouhght my Macbook pro retina display 13 Inch i5  a week ago and I spilled a liquid on my keyboard , and i would like to know how much coast to repair the damage in apple store , i didnt buy in the offical apple shop. Some places are asking to pay 620 Pounds.

The only way you can get a valid estimate is by someone examining the MBP directly.  Since no one on these forums can see or examine your MBP, you will need to get this infomation from a qualified repair shop.  It seems that you already have secured one estimate.  You can also bring the MBP to an Apple store and have a genius bar examine it for FREE.
    Ciao.

  • Two problems after i installed and retore my powerbook

    Hi guys,
Two issues still remain in my powerbook after i restored my old setting from my back up drive to my new internal HD...
    1. Well, after several attempt to get my powerbook to sleep probably, zapped the PRAM and i think i have resetted PMU as well. I have upgraded to OS 10.4.9. Still my powerbook doesn't sleep accoring to the setup in the system preference. Anyone can suggest me something else to do?
    2. For some reasons now when i am using dial up to connect to the internet, the system just keep displaying connecting to the internet while the connection is established. Took me a while to realized that cuz i thought something happened to the modem. When i opened the "internet connect" in the summary, it still says contacting PPP server. Why is this? the system didn't detect any internet connection from the dial up yet i am able to access the internet. The system was able to detect my office's LAN, but why not dial up?
From the look of these symptoms, does this mean my OS is not stable now? Everything else runs ok though...

  • My PowerBook G4 can't run iTunes 10.5.3. It says I need QuickTime 7.5.5, which I can't download. I'm running OS 10.5.8.

    My PowerBook G4 can't run iTunes 10.5.3. It says I need QuickTime 7.5.5, which I can't download. I'm running OS 10.5.8.

I had the same problem but I resolve the issue by reloading quicktime. There is a quicktime 7.5.5 for os 10.5.8, I download it from apple and install it. After it was installed, itune launched by itself with no problems. Hope it works for you.

  • After upgrading to FF 3.6.12 I can no longer view PHP pages from my hard drive.

After upgrading to version 3.6.12 I can no longer open PHP web pages from my hard drive. When I create or edit web pages I view them from my hard drive first before uploading, as many webmasters do to look for errors before taking them live.
I can view PHP pages online, but from my hard drive it just spawns endless empty tabs. Instead of just opening the page it asked me what to open it with, thinking the PHP web page is a script.
It was working fine before the upgrade. I had a page open that I wanted to edit, which it reopened when my browser restarted.
Then I edited the page. All I did was add a link to it. Then I hit the refresh button to see the change and instead of reloading the page, FF asked me what to do with the PHP script, prompting me to save it or choose what program to open it with.
I selected to view it with FF and it just spawned endless tabs. They wouldn't stop. Had to shut down FF and it probably had 40 tabs opened with nothing on them. I tried other PHP pages from my hard drive that opened fine before, but it did the same thing with them.
I tried finding help online and I see others have had the same problem, but no solution was offered that worked. I tried rebooting, same story, it wants to know what to do with the PHP script.
I'm being forced to use another browser, so I'm going to go download Chrome now. If this probably isn't fixed soon I'll simply give up on FF. It's not worth the aggravation. I can't tell you how much TIME I've wasted today -- HOURS.
    Very disappointed.

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't have to process the php, it just has to show the HTML content. It did that just fine before the last upgrade but won't now.
I've seen that page you referenced: http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions.
It doesn't help. The things it says to look for aren't there for me, specifically:
    browser.download.pluginOverrideTypes
    plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types
I followed the rest of the instructions but it didn't help.
I did get it to quit opening tabs, instead it prompts me what it should do with the file every time now. What it should do, and used to do, is open the php page and display the HTML content.
    Any other ideas?

  • After updating to the latest version of Firefox on my Mac there is no progress bar for the page load. I really miss this feature and can't seem to find a way to obtain it.

The page load progress bar that was on the lower right of the window is no longer there. After updating to the latest version of Firefox on my Mac there is no progress bar for the page load. I really miss this feature and can't seem to find a way to obtain it. The tab has a circular progress wheel but this is useless for determining a stuck or slow loading page.
PLEASE NOTE: I am typing this in from a Windows based work computer but am asking about my Apple MacBook Pro that i use at home.

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.<br />
    Another possibility is to use:
    * [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences Firefox (Tools) > Options] > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

  • After I downloaded the new version of Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.262, I can't seem to play games with my friends on Yahoo Messenger.

It could be a coincidence but when I upgraded to the latest version of Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.262 I can't seem to play any games on Yahoo Messenger with my friends. I know when I updated for some reason I had to try 3 times before it took it. It shows it's updated. I'm wondering if I have to un-install and re-install it. Also, I never use Internet Explorer 8 but when I went in there to check I found a plug in check link there and it showed over there that Adobe Flash Player needed updating but it was an older version and not the one Foxfire had me update too. Now I'm really confused if this is causing a problem. I have never had to check Internet Explorer for plug ins before. Have always just updated in Foxfire since that's what I use. The Adobe Flash Player seems to play videos okay so not really sure if that's the issue or not. My Java plug-ins have been fine and have been updated awhile ago, so I know it's not that. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Well, after hours of trying to figure it out I gave up and un-installed and re-installed that last verion of Adobe Flash Player and now it seems I can play games again in Messenger. Everything else had been fine just that. I can only figure it was because it was having a hard time updating the first time and took me 3 tries. So even though it said it was installed, apparently it wasn't done correctly.
Though when I couldn't figure out what was wrong at first I looked and checked to see all the things were enabled that were supposed to be and they were.
I even tried to go to the Adobe site and download the last version I had and couldn't find it. Kept coming up with the new version. Others said if you download a particular older version it may not have all the security features in it.
This really gets to be a bit much, especially when you're by yourself and have only a smattering of knowledge of technical things.
Thanks fore responding to my question.

  • I recently got a new computer because my old one wouldn't let me open creative suite 3 after it generated a error and now I can't deactivate the key to activate it onto my new account.

I recently got a new computer because my old one wouldn't let me open creative suite 3 after it generated a error and now I can't deactivate the key to activate it onto my new computer. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

You are allowed to have two activted installations, so if the first machine is the only machine with an activated installation there is nothing prohibiting you from installing and activating on the new machine.
You can contact Adobe Support thru chat to have the old installation deactivation.

  • After upgrading to iOS 8.0.2, I can't print from my iPhone 5s

After upgrading to iOS 8.0.2, I can't print from my iPhone 5s.  My iPhone 4s and iPad continue to print.  When I try to print to either printer, the message reads,"contacting printer," and then, "preparing to print."  But nothing prints.

Following ultimately helped me : Make sure that you are logged in at the App Store App or iTunes App with your apple ID and password with a US account. Turn your iPad off and on and than you should see the Radio button again. It won't work if you are logged on with a foreign account. If you are not logged in at all, it worked, too.
