After startup strange Finder window - what's up ??

After getting into trouble (structure of the files being corrupted acc to TechTool Pro) I had to re-install my backup.
This backup was still on 10.3.8 as I was testing whether all my apps were running smoothly on 10.3.9.
So I went thru the process of installing 10.3.9 and most of the recommanded installations via Software Update, except Security Update 2007-002 and 2007-005.
Before and after every software install, I ran Cocktail.
Being on 10.3.9 again, every time I login or after every reboot the system now comes up with a Finder window which shows the content of "LCDFactoryDefaultfiles".
Never seen this before I ran into trouble with my previously installed 10.3.9.
I noticed that in the upgrade to 10.3.9 several security updates where incorporated that on my previous installation I had to do myself.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks in advance!
cheers,
Remko

Hi Remko
Well it may not be to do with Cocktail, it is just that there are many changes it can make, it was worth a thought.
I haven't had a bad experience with Cocktail, but most of those operations are done by OS X as a matter of course when normal maintenance is allowed to run, other operations are more troubleshooting exercises not maintenance, and other things are negative, like deleting .DS_Store files which will just slow down your computer on start up and then they will be re-created next time you open a folder.
There may be some tweaks to Safari for example that it can do that are clever, but pre-binding the entire system is something that just does not need to be done.
I am not suggesting you don't use it, just that you don't need to. It is purely personal. The reason I bought a Mac was because I was fed up with all the needed maintenance to keep a windows machine running. In contrast Macs maintain themselves very well. It exceeded my expectation. Therefore I am loathe to make any alterations that may upset the status quo. But I do browse over my system looking at what caches are created where, and there are a couple of spots where I may manually drag those files to the trash but the rest of it is self regulating.
So back to your computer, and that window that opens each time, when you backed up the 10.3.8 were your using a different monitor, or have you changed monitor settings, as something seems to be wanting to establish a setting that is now different from the backup.

  • Strange finder window behaviour

    Hi everyone.
Sometimes when I shut my macbook pro down, the finder window reopens exactly as I had it with all the tabs intact. Other times, when I shut it down and reboot, there is no finder window open at all.
I would like the finder window to reopen as I left it all of the time. Does anyone know why this might be happening and how I can go about troubleshooting it?
    Thanks.

Any other suggestions how to solve the problem? The folders once created in OS 9 will not accept the new Finder window view options which I have set to be used as default in Mac OS X 10.6. When I delete all the .DS_Store files the folders view options just revert back to something I used in OS 9 many years ago when I created the folders. All new folders created in Mac OS X are OK and they will use the new Finder window view options which I have set to be used as default. And it's not an option to manually restore to defaults using the view options palette since there are hundreds of folders. I did not have this problem with Mac OS X 10.5 before installing 10.6.

Our boss brought a mac mini model A1176 from the US to be used by her staff here in the Philippines. We powered it up- everything was working. Then it just stopped working after onen day. Whenever it is powered up, the mac mini auto shuts down shortly after the startup chime. What's wrong. How can we fix it? Thanks a lot.

  • Finder Window won't open since 10.6.6 update

I recently did a software update on my Macbook Pro to get the App Store. It worked great for a day. Now my time & date, and battery life icons will not show up on the top right of the screen. Also I cannot open any Finder windows. I can still open applications with no problems as long as they are in the dock or a program that I used recently. Also the Software Update screen shuts down before it can detect any new updates. Ditto with any utilities that I try through System Preferences. I did a Virus Scan immediately after the Software Update with Virus Barrier and detected no problems. What's going on? I don't want to do a system wipe but I will if I have to.

If you try to try to create a new Finder window what exactly happens or doesn't happen? Do you get any errors or what? Do you have the Finder menu items along the top of the screen? Should say "Finder File Edit View Go Help".
If the "New Finder Window" doesn't work from the "File" menu, can you use the "Go" menu and click on "Utilities".
If you don't have the Finder menu, it has probably crashed. The easiest way to start it is to do an press the "Option" key and right-click on the Finder icon in the Dock (or Control-Option if you can't do a right-click) and then select the "Relaunch" item.
If you can't do any of this probably the next thing to try is restart the system - do this by clicking on the Apple in the top left corner and then click on the "Restart" item - make sure to exit out of all the running apps before doing this and saving any changed files if you need to.
    Good luck ...

  • Error ID 3006-3007-10021 after startup

Hi, these  are the 3 daily returning Error ID's after startup or wake-up , what can be the cause ?
    Error ID 3006 (source: search)
    Error ID 3007 (source: search)
    Error ID 10021 (source: search)
These have no impact on my PC's performance (I think....) , but these are still error reports , and I want to know the reason.
    OS = Windows7 , Office 2007 installed , all software is genuine .

    the solution is simple:
i recently received this errors in my pc and tried this, but didn't worked
then i decided to remove and reinstall the windows search and the errors have gone.
go to Control Panel, Programs, Activate or Deactivate Windows Resources
uncheck "windows search " and reboot
go back there and re-check windows search and do not reboot yet .
go to event viewer and clean the applications log then reboot.
if worked these errors will not appears anymore.
And how can I deactivate Windows Search in Windows 8.1? There is no option in the Control Panel, Programs to deactivate it.
    Thanks

  • FINDER WINDOW OPENS UP AFTER STARTUP !!!!

Hi all i seem to be having a problem that was not happing before I installed the
Latest Mac OS X 10.6.5 (10H574) update. Here is the problem when I startup
The system and log on after the desktop shows up a finder window opens
To the top level in other words it opens my computer showing the drives
Net and devices it never did this before it does this every time now, ok
Now lets talk about what other people have done about this problem
It would seem that some of these solutions worked for some and Did
Not for other in other words it not all the same problem or solution.
    1. Delete the finder pref plist did not work!
    2. Check user login startup items no there was not any items in there that
    Would cause this!
    3. I also checked to see if it was a wallpaper problem that did not work!
    4. And no I did not have any windows or app’s running when I shutdown
    The system.
So I have had no luck with this problem oh here some more info
I have two Mac systems and they are both doing the same thing
Now both have the same os version slash updates
One system is Mac Book Pro the other is a Mac Pro

it shouldn't be blank... it should look something like this:
    finderinfo[0]: 164 => Blessed System Folder is /System/Library/CoreServices
    finderinfo[1]: 510937 => Blessed System File is /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
    finderinfo[2]: 0 => Open-folder linked list empty
    finderinfo[3]: 0 => No alternate OS blessed file/folder
    finderinfo[4]: 0 => Unused field unset
    finderinfo[5]: 164 => OS X blessed folder is /System/Library/CoreServices
    note the *finderinfo[2]: 0 => Open-folder linked list empty*
if this is the case for your system (including other mounted volumes) then it must be a separate issue.

  • HT2311 After waiting 27 minutes while the new iTunes supposedly downloaded onto my computer, the Finder window did not appear, and the iTunes.mpkg icon didn't appear on my desktop (where downloads usually go).  What do I do?

After waiting 27 minutes while the new iTunes supposedly downloaded onto my computer, the Finder window did not appear, and the iTunes.mpkg icon didn't appear on my desktop (where downloads usually go).  I also looked for the new iTunes by clicking on my Hard Drive icon but didn't see it there either.  I only see the icon for the old iTunes.  What do I do?

The exclamation mark means that the app has lost the link to the actual file.
First step: try and make sure the iPhoto Library is working correctly:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Cannot open new finder window after upgrading to Maverick 10.9.2

    Hello friends,
I am experiencing a very strange issue.
I cannot access the contents of my files via the finder. I can access my files via open or save as from separate applications.
    I have tried the following:
Finder ---> New Finder Window (finder flashes or switches to an existing open application)
Double-clicking on existing folders (finder flashes or switches to an existing open application)
Double-clicking on the icon of my Macintosh HD (finder flashes or switches to an existing open application)
From Dock, click on downloaded document and choose "Open in Finder" (finder flashes or switches to an existing open application)
From iPhoto, select a photo, and select "Reveal in Finder" (nothing happens)
Restart machine has not fixed the issue
After several tries, I get an error displaying that there was an issue with the finder.
    I am running Maverick 10.9.2

Unfortunately, Finder is a part of OS level files. So, we have a couple of options.
First off, let's see if there's a software conflict somewhere. Boot into safe mode (boot the comptuer with the shift key held down) and try there. If it works in safe mode, odds are we either have a 3rd party KEXT or application blocking its launch. Check your login items (Apple -> System Preferences -> users & groups -> select your user -> login items), and disable them.
Also check your startup items (you'll have to do this in safe mode as it requires Finder).
    /library/startupitems
    If Safe Mode/removing startup/login items doesn't work:
First, boot in to the recovery partition (boot the computer with command + r held down). Launch disk utility, and repair both disk permissions and the disk. Reboot and try again.
If that fails, boot into recovery again, and reinstall.

  • No finder windows on startup

    Hello,
I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion on my mid-2012 MB Air. When I start the machine the objects on my desktop, e.g., desktop printers, are present, however, there are never any finder windows no matter how many I have created prior to shutting down. I thought about deleting the <com.apple.finder,plist> preferences file and restarting, but this file doesn't appear to get created any longer, or at least spotlight doesn'f find it on my machine.
What can I do so that I have the same number of finder windows on startup that I had on shutdown and in the same location (this didn't seem to be an issue in 10.7)? There isn't anything that, to me, seems like a setting for this in the Finder Preferences panes.
    Some extra information:
I had to have the logic board and SSD replaced last week. The Apple Store installed 10.8 for me after the repair. I did not want to use MigrationAssisant or whatever it's called in case it brought over some corruption from my previous Lion system. So I planned to do a drag and drop of my data and re-download all my applications. I began by dragging over only the mail and mail downloads folders from my 10.7 TimeMachine backup. Before dragging any other data over, it then became clear that the new 10.8 system had some terrible problems; these occurred in my (Admin) account and in a new guest account I created (so not related to the mail and account data I had dragged over). I re-downloaded and re-installed 10.8 and did the system updates. Things seem to work ok now in so far as the issues that occurred before no longer do, BUT with the Finder windows exception mentioned above.
    Thank you.
    Richard

It is normal behavior on log in NOT to have an open Finder window.
If you want them open when you Shut Down on your Apple menu in the dialoge window do you have "re-opnen windows when logging back in" check marked? It should be.
In System Preferences > General do you have "Close windows when quitting application" check marked?
    It shouldn't be.

  • Windows 8.1 is forgetting Acrobat as my default PDF viewer after startup

I installed Arcobat XI Pro on Windows 8.1. I set Acrobat as my default PDF viewer during the installation. After the installation, none program was set as the default PDF viewer. When I tried to open a PDF file, Windows asked which program I want to use as my default PDF viewer. I Choose Acrobat.
Each time I start up my computer, Windows has forgotten my default PDF viewer. I did some research to find out if it was a problem with Windows or with Acrobat. I turns out to be a problem with Acrobat, becuase if I set Adobe Reader as my default PDF viewer, Windows does remember my default PDF viewer after startup.
Is there anybody with the same problem and do you have a solution?

    Hi Anand,
    Thanks for your responds.
This way is not working either. Both Reader and Acrobat are version 11.0.9.
Do you have any other solution? Beside, do you have any idea what is causing the problem?
    Regards,

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
This action will delete any custom Mail stationery that you have created. If you want to preserve it, ask for instructions.
If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Some items in finder windows have gray dots after file names

When I open a finder window for the current directory, some of the file name shave little gray dots after the file names, off to the right at the end of the name field.  What do they mean?  Mavericks 10.9.4 on a 2009 Mac Pro.

It means that the gray tag has been assigned to them.

    Hi,
Sounds like it isn't to serious. the Bluetooth connection had an error and that is that generated
    the Problem report.
When the Blackberry started to use Bluetooth the "gold standard" was using Microsoft's
"native" windows drivers. Now, every major PC company has there own version
    Thus the problem report.
There is  rather involved and lengthy procedure to check and install the correct Bluetooth drivers
in the Dell, but I really don't think you want to take that on.( Nod you head and say H*LL YES)
    Here is what I propose;
The problem report needs to be resolved or it wont go away. Read the manual, call Dell,
try apologizing to it and that you'll never never do it again, what ever it takes!
Make the best investment you can make for your Blackberry, buy a media card.
All the memory in the BB is dynamic, this facilitates the functions of the phone.
By storing media in that memory, you effect are wasting X amount for file storage.
Store all media and files on the media card, and you will have a smooth running device.
They run about $25.00usd, they are easy to install, and they also make moving your
media a snap. You will need the USB adapter that came with it, but you can get that at
    your local carrier store.
So if you agree with this I need some info.
On the Blackberry go to the options icon, click then scroll up to ABOUT.
I need your software version number, it's listed in this format: 4.x.x.xxx.
Send it back to me and I can tell you what size card you can get.
    Let me know your thoughts!
    Thanks,

  • Finder Window Launchs after Login.

Need to figure out why Finder launches window immediately after Log-on. Desktop appears briefly then Finder window opens to Macintosh HD.
Doesn't hurt anything just irritating have to close Finder Window after every Start-up and/or Log-on.
    Ideas appreciated!
    Thanx

    Hi,
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab.
    And go to /Library/Startup Items.
Might be something in the Login Items or Startup Items that requires the Finder.
If not, go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the *com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder.
    Restart your Mac.
