After straightening/cropping 1/2 or 3/4 of displayed image is blacked out!

Sometimes After straightening and cropping 1/2 or 3/4 of the displayed image (from a Nikon RAW image) is blacked out! I am using version 2.1 of aperture. Apparently the file is fine and is straightened and cropped (I can see the full picture cropped and straightened in the browser), but the display isn't working when I double-click to open that picture. Frustrating. Any ideas/fixes? I have 2GB of RAM so memory shouldn't be a problem.

I know that you know this but straitening and cropping are supposed to black out the parts of your image that are cut off by the very nature of those operations. Assuming you are not really asking "hey why do the straiten and crop tools work like they are supposed to", some screen shots of what you are talking about would help get your question answered properly.

  • Unsharp images after straighten/crop

Aa significant problem I had observed in iPhoto ‘08 is not fixed in '09, and the workaround I had previously used is no longer effective.
If you have an image containing a lot of fine detail and are working with it in iPhoto’s Edit mode, you’ll find that if you crop or straighten it, it will lose some of its original sharpness. Further, if you then use the Sharpness slider to try to remedy the situation, it may appear to have little or no effect. (It turns out that printing results in a sharp image — it’s the on-screen display that’s deficient here.)
I have recently found that moving the Picture Size slider just a tiny bit to the right restores the screen image sharpness, but this is true only if you keep the slider away from its normal leftmost position. While a reasonable (if annoying) workaround when viewing a single image, this is not a practical solution in many situations.
My workaround in iPhoto ‘08 was to open the image in Photoshop (using it in External Editor mode from within iPhoto) and apply some insignificant change just to ensure that the JPEG was rewritten when saved back into iPhoto. This worked well, but unfortunately no longer does so in iPhoto ‘09.
Colleagues have confirmed my observations and I'm not sure why this problem hasn't been more widely commented on. (It seems to be processor- and display-independent.) If anyone has a fix or a new workaround I'd be very grateful.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I notice that when I use the slider to zoom the image slightly it becomes clear again.
I've noticed this with several versions of iPhoto. It's how the photo is rendered by iPhoto. Initially it may be slightly blurry but when, as you've discovered, you joggle the slideshow it suddenty snaps into sharp focus. I don't know if it's the size ratio that the initial full screen causing the problem but I've noticed in Photoshop, any size enlargement other that 25, 50, 75 or 100% will appear blurry.
You should report it to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. It's just a quirk that's I've noticed and learned to live with over a couple of versions.
I've not noticed it recently, however. Create a new, non-administrative testing account on you Mac (great for troubleshooting like this), create a new library, import a photo or two that displays the problem on your other account and see if the results are the same. Post back with what you find.

  • Grey area still present in JPGS after straightening from RAW?

Using LR 3, my finished JPG files, exported from RAW, still show a transparent grey area after image straightening/crop is applied. The problem only occurs once images are uploaded via FTP and viewed in Fotostation software. Any advice / knowledge much appreciated.

  • Straighten & crop in Photoshop action

I must straighten & crop a numer of pics which I would like to do with a ps action. My problem: I cannot place the ruler within an action to get the individually selected angle for straightening. Is there a solution?

You could make the crop and straighten part of the action something like this:
    1. Use the insert menu item from the actions panel flyout menu and when the dialog appears,
go to Analysis>Ruler Tool, select it and click ok in the insert menu dialog.
    2. To get a pause in the action so you can draw out the ruler tool, use the
Playback Options from the actions panel flyout menu and set to
Pause For and the number of seconds you need to draw out the ruler.
Then use the Playback Options again, set to Accelerated.
    3.  Draw out the Ruler Tool and select the Straighten button from the tool options bar.

  • Some of my photos have a disconnected link after being cropped on iPhoto

I am an editor of a art/lit magazine. We take pictures of the art work, upload them to iPhoto, crop/edit them, and then move them into Indesign. Most of the pictures work when we do that, but for five of them, it doesn't. We upload those, crop them, and then when we go back to the picture, it just turns black when we try to do anything with it. We've tried to retake the pictures, but each time the same thing keeps happening after we edit it. I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this, or if we are doing something wrong. It only does it for certain pictures of the same artwork, so we have no idea what is wrong.
    *PLEASE HELP:)*

    Reply to Terence Devlin:
There really is not anything different with the pictures. We will take a picture of the same piece of art mulitple times, and all the pictures of the same piece of art work don't work.
It only messes up after we crop it.
We tried the backup and rebuild, but it didn't work.
    Thank you though!

  • Cropping bug: part of image goes black

A strange problem which cropped up after installing 3.2, and remains after re-installing 3.2.
When I go to crop a vertical image, the top 1/3 of the image goes black.  I can still select what I want (guessing for the border in the black part) and, when I complete the crop, I get the whole image I want, with no black.
Interestingly, if I rotate the vertical to horizontal, I can crop with no black part.  So I can use that to crop, and then rotate back to vertical.  But there's clearly a bug here.
    Any suggestions?

You are probably experiencing the crop and or onscreen proofing bug that was introduced with AP 3.2 update. It is summarized well in the posts on this page:
    http://www.apertureexpert.com/
We need to wait for Apple to fix this one (or you can look at some of the other posts in this forum for reverting back to 3.1.3 until the fix is issued).

  • 27 inch thunderbolt display blacks out after Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2

Bought 2 new 27 inch TB displays for two different machines and after a couple of days the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 appears on my Mac Pro with one of the displays installed. So I install the firmware update.  Now my display blacks out periodically and I keep getting Graphic Display Errors with a request to sent the errors to Apple. Running a 32 GB Mac Pro (late 2013 circular style) I have three monitors connected (two 20 inch cinema displays and the new 27 inch display). This machine is supposed to be able to handle three 4k monitors or 6 standard TB displays.  I've seen the posts about the blacking out with this monitor but I didn't have any problems before the firmware update and now I've got them pretty regularly.  I had the blacking out problem on an earlier monitor and took one of the monitors back and Apple gave me another one and this is the replacement.  Same problem, but this one only started after the update. I'm hoping someone from Apple reads these messages and can let me know what's up.
BTW, I also have an older 27 inch Apple monitor that ran perfectly on this machine so I'm disappointed that I spent all this money and now get the blacking out issue.
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    Processor 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
    Memory 32 BG
Graphics AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB

I have my Thunderbolt display connected to my MacBook Pro and have been experiencing the same issue, getting worse over time.  The folks at my local Apple store did not know what to do about it.  So, I looked around and tried different thing.
The one thing that seems to be working is to System Preferences > Build-in Display > uncheck “Automatically adjust brightness.”
    I hope this helps.

  • Screen blacks out after a few seconds and won't return to normal state.

I have the 30 gig ipod photo that i got about a year and a half ago. Whenever I look at the screen to access music or anything, the screen blacks out like there's a screensaver or something and won't return back to normal. Even after I reset it, it stays normal for a few seconds and then blacks out again. The backlighting still works so it's just a bright black screen and I have function of the click wheel because it clicks everytime I move up or down. I already tried restoring it so I am all out of options. Anyone PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks
    Steve

This happens rarely but consistently! I't seems to happen about 5% of the time waking from sleep. It MAY be more prone to happen if I had been moving with it in my bag, but it can happen at any waking time after any duration of sleep.

  • On images that are long and narrow horizontally, iPhoto truncates them and automaticall crops off part of each end of the image.  How can I make it stop?

On images that are long and narrow horizontally, iPhoto truncates them and automatically crops off part of each end of the image.  the thumbnail has a jagged, serrated edge at both ends.  How can I make it stop?

Then I do not get your problem - you can import the photo - you can find the photo and you can edit and save the photo - what more do you want?
By defination thumbnails are small images to help you find the large image - the large image is fine and you can find it fine - and you know it is only showing part of the image because of the "jagged ends"
If you think think that iPhoto should display long thumbnails suggest to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto Feedback
as to your digital photoframe - contact them - in general gital photos frames display one and only one aspect ratio and any photo that is not in that aspect ratio will be modified to display - either cropped to the proper size for the frame or have 'White" space added to fill the frame - that function is totally controled by the Digital Photo frame and any otptions you have will be in the manual or on the support web site for the frame - to put it in old film terms - you can not put an 8x10 print in a 5x7 frame unless you cut the photo down (or a 8x15 photo in an 8x10 frame either)

In trying to edit a track - I want to "Delete and Move" the track to automatically fill the area that I deleted - However, after selecting a section to delete - the "Delete and Move" option is grayed out. How do I fix this?

Thank you for your attempt to help me. I appreciate that.
I think I figured out how to fix it-
I found that if I only delete a small amount at the beginning and at the end of the section that I want to remove - and then highlight that section - Then (and only then) does the "Delete and Move" function work to remove the unwanted section and automatically close the gap between the surrounding sections. I was trying to select a whole section and could only delete it - and then manually move it.
    Problem solved.
