After Time Machine Restore I Can't Label The Main Drive With Colour

I changed my drive to a bigger drive and used time machine to restore my os and files to the new drive.
A small thing i know, but i used to have my drives labelled with colour using the get info window. After the restore i dont seem to have permission to add a colour to my drive anymore.
This is the only issue ive picked up. Anyone know why this is the case?

It's a good thing. I was going to suggest checking the Get Info window for access writes next, so you did the smart thing.
FYI - You should continue to run Repair Permissions periodically, even if nothing is wrong. I do it every time I get system and security updates, and install major applications. Actually, I do it before and after the updates, although that may be a bit extreme. But I've never had any problems with installing updates either.

  • Password does not work after time machine restore and can not reset from CD

The hard drive failed on my Power Mac G5. I replaced it and restored everything from Time Machine. The two non -admin accounts I can log into fine but my password for the admin account does not.  I tried resetting it booting from the OSX CD and using the password reset utility. It says it has done its thing but then I reboot and try to log in same problem.  It even has the old password hint.  I changed that  so I could see if it worked. I tried both my account and the root account out of desperation.  Any help appreciated!

Hello, there's some corruption on the HDD, try this...

Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... give the new User a different name than an existing one.

  • Reactivate software needed after Time Machine Restore?

So I'm getting ready to upgrade the HD in my MBP and I am going to try the time machine restore feature (hopefully) to reload the new HD to exact status of old HD. From what I've read this is pretty easy to do. What I can't find in my searches is if all the apps on my HD will need to be reactivate after this procedure.
Once I restore the new HD does all the software need to be reactivated? I have a ton of apps that I have no idea where the serial #'s are and would be screwed if I had to reactivate them. Or does the restore to the new HD work seemlessly so that it's as if I didn't even swap HDs.

The only 'problem' I've ever had after a restore was with the MS Office for Mac suite 2011. It required me to either re-enter my activation code or sign-on to my Office 365 account (I did the latter).
Never had a problem with Adobe products, though. I can't guarantee that you won't, of course, but I've personally never had a problem with Adobe products.

    Hi guys,
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
hope somebody can help me with this issue with TM.
I decided to restore my entire system from a backup I got in an external hard drive ( formatted mac Os Journaled). I didnt exclude any folder from the backup.
Basically using the mac osx installation disk
Which one? If you used a Leopard Install disc, that's the problem. You need to use a +Snow Leopard+ disc to restore a +Snow Leopard+ backup. (Unfortunately, Apple doesn't exactly make that clear -- you are far from the first!)
If your system is not too large, and didn't take more than an hour or so to restore, just do it over.
If it's a lot larger, though, you can just install Snow Leopard. Your Mac should boot up normally, but don't use any apps yet. First, download and install the 10.6.5 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • All applications were "?" On the dashboard after time machine restore to new hard drive...what went wrong?

    Hi folks
I used the cmd R option on booting the MBP and did a disk scan and it reported errors that could not be fixed/repaired.
So I opted to install a brand new 1Tbyte Seagate hybrid hard drive and restore from my time machine backup.
So I installed the new drive in the MBP...it stated that it needed to restore from the internet and I was treated with a rotating globe for about 10 minutes.
It then gave the normal restore options and I opened to format the new drive as a mac drive etc...
Selected the most recent TM backup from USB drive and pointed it to the new formatted HD in the MBP.
So far so good I thought....it said it was restoring....
waited about 4.5 hours and apparently it completed when I was out so I did not see any messages just a normal looking mavericks desktop BUT with "?" In the dashboard where all the applications icons should be?????
I assume something went wrong somewhere so I reinstalled the old HD and restarted TM and it's not starting to backup all 493Gbyte of disk whichI. Understand is normal after a full restore.
So...what to do now??? I'll wait for the 7 odd hours of TM to complete but how best should I proceed with the new HD etc...should I reinstall and copy mavericks to it from a memory stick and then attempt a new restore from the recent TMS backup? Or will this cause issues....
I also have an Inateck hard drive cloning device (brand new never used) so I had wondered if I should simply install the old drive and new drives into this and start the cloning mechanism? OR will this simply clone the errors that were reported on the old drive when it was in the MBP?
In short I'm not sure what to do for the best now and would welcome helpful suggestions as to how to proceed.
    thanks
    Nick

    <<<<UPDATE>>>>
If at first you don't succeed...
Last night after the new 493 Gbyte time machine completed. I once again installed the new drive and restarted the MBP ...waited 10 min for the internet to download the basic disk utilities...restarted the restore from TM and waited 6 hours...Happy days it worked perfectly and like a rocket...the old disk had a read write speed of approx 50-60 Mb/s the new one (hybrid drive) measures at 100-110 Mb/s...programmes open and close noticeably faster and it's better than when the MBP was new...
Apparently this new hybrid drive "learns" frequently used programmes and caches parts that improves start up time etc as time progresses etc...the MBP now starts from cold boot in less than 1 minute compared to 2 plus before...I know minutes should not really matter but it does improve the user experience. I should add I have 16G of RAM installed which does make a difference with Photoshop and Aperture etc.
Hope this helps others or at least encourages people to try hybrid drives over the much more expensive SSD option.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • Odd Menu Bar Labels After Time Machine Restore

I just got my new MBPR 13" and tried to restore it from a Time Machine Backup during the initial setup process. This proceeded in about a minute (I have 450GB used on my old computer) then told me it was "done" and booted up. The machine was empty, so I attempted to launch Migration Assistant, which initially loaded and asked me to select a backup, but then immediately crashed and subsequently refused to load despite several restarts. I finally booted into the Recovery Partition and restored from a Time Machine Backup from there which seemed to work great, and took a much more reasonable 2 hours to copy all files. Everything looks fine in terms of files, but the OS is exhibiting some odd behaviors. For instance, when I click on the WiFi logo, instead of an "On" label it has a button labeled "kAirportStatusOnKey" with all buttons labeled similarly. My Time Machine HDD (named James' HDD) also showed up with an odd name in the Time Machine menu item. These are the things I have noticed, but I doubt they are isolated. Anyone seen this before, or have an idea about what might have happened and how to fix it?
    Thanks guys,
    James

Do you have any software that custom installs something on the menubar?  Many such programs do not carry their compatibility through every operating system update and need to be updated periodically.

  • ALL Photos missing after Time Machine restore  (help)

So, I accidently formated the wrong drive while in Windows, (big oops) which gave me the opportunity to take Time Machine for a test drive.
I put the DVD in, and was able to restore from the TIme Machine drive. Very impressed! Everything came back just as I had left it except - whats this? The default Leopard wallpaper instead of a picture of my son? Huh strange, I thought. Until I noticed I had no photos in iPhoto.
There seems to be reminents of photos in the iphoto database - the size is 1.3gb instead of the 7gb it used to be. But 0 photos in iPhoto 08.
I went into iPhoto and choose File/Browse Backups. I selected Nov 8th, which was the last day of my backup and showed all 7000+ photos, and clicked "Restore All". This brought up something odd - a 2nd iPhoto icon in the dock, which showed a progress bar for the restore. Once the restore was completed, I still had a 2nd iPhoto icon the the bar, which was iPhoto running - but no photos in iphoto! I exited the 2nd iphoto, which disappeared, and launched my normal Iphoto icon. Still no photos! (That just seems odd that it would launch iPhoto with a 2nd icon)
So, I moved my iphoto database, and launch iPhoto in order to create a fresh database - thinking maybe that was the issue. I then did File/Restore again, and went through the whole processes again, including the odd 2nd icon. Still, no photos! And another 1.3gb iphoto database!
Is it normal for a Time Machine restore to not include your photos? Surely you are not supposed to restore them separately from within Iphoto?
What do I do now? At this point, everything went very well - except no photos! Which is awful and not at all expected! 7000+ family photos! At least, if I ask iPhoto/Time Machine to restore 'all photos' you would think it would restore 'all photos' - not show a progress bar, and then show me no photos!
p.s. I just tooked at the iPhoto Library. The 1.3gb is in /Data/ which contains folders 2000-2007, my Events, and thumbnails of all the photos - but no actual photos (the 'Originals' folder is missing).
I then went back in time, and found the 8gb iPhoto Library database. I supposed I could copy it over manually via Time Machine, and not iPhoto's Restore/TM - but - i'm so far off track of how this should have went I don't know what to think!
p.s.s. So I did just that - copied the 8gb iPhoto Library manually from TM, and pasted it in place. I help down option, and launch iPhoto, selecting the 8gb library - and BOOM... no photos!
    Something is #$%# up here.

This is what it says in the help file:
Reverting to a previous Mac OS X version
If you’ve used Time Machine to back up your computer, you can easily revert to a previous version of Mac OS X if you’re experiencing trouble after installing an update.
IMPORTANT: Reverting to the previous version of Mac OS X will erase any additions or changes you’ve made to the files on your computer after installing the new version of Mac OS X. To save new or revised files, copy them onto a different disk or back them up using Time Machine before you follow these instructions. Use Time Machine only if you’re reverting to a previous version of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), since Time Machine is not available with Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier.
To revert to a previous version of Mac OS X:
Insert the disc you used to install the new version of Mac OS X, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System From Backup.
In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. To restore your computer to the state it was in before you installed a new version of Mac OS X, choose the most recent backup.
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
If you backed up any individual files as described under the Important message above, you can restore them now. If you backed them up using Time Machine, recover them using the Time Machine application. (You’ll find the Time Machine application in the Dock or in the Applications folder.)
    Hope this helps

  • Music icon changed after time machine restore

I recently did a Time Machine restore and everything went well, except now my audio icon files are white instead of black like they were before I did the restore.
Here is what they look like now:
but before they were black with the grey music symbol. Does anyone know if this is a setting that changes this?
    Thanks.

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • After Time Machine restore, Lion Server doesn't have services

My poor old server finally died, so I replaced it with new hardware.  I wiped the hard drive, installed Lion fresh, and did a restore from Time Machine.  However, when I run the Server Admin app, it says it was unable to connect to the machine.
I re-ran the Server Admin Tools install, and I also tried to connect via IP address.
I must have missed something, hopefully someone will have a tip.  Thanks!

Not from Time Machine which is backing up only a file, not its individual contents. Either you restore iPhoto Library or not.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
      5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • IMac won't accept password after time machine restore

Restored 2009 IMac after an HD replacement by Apple. All proceeded smoothly until IMac wouldn't accept my password after the restore from Time Machine. Any ideas will be appreciated.

One thing to try, if you didn't already do this, is to reinstall OS X and use Setup Assistant (which is only available at first boot of a new HD or a reinstalled OS) to migrate your data. A full Time Machine restoration on a new HD can have file permissions problems and/or duplicate User Account problems if Setup Assistant is not used.

  • Need to re-authorize iTunes after Time Machine restore -bug?-

After a ganked iTunes/Quicktime update I had to use Time Machine to restore my Mac.
After trying to re-sync my iPod with iTunes I was informed that this machine was no longer authorized despite it being the same machine.
I had to re-authorize the machine through iTunes and now have 2 authorized Macs even though it's the same machine and I can't de-authorize the "old version" since it just de-authorizes what you're using i.e. the "new version"
My worry is that if I have to carry out further Time Machine restores then my 5 authorized slots will fill up and then I'll have to de-authorize all computers which you can only do once a year.
Has anyone experienced anything similar and I assume this is a bug?

Yes I've seen that and yes, it's a case of sending Mac OS X Feedback .

  • Locked Out of HD After Time Machine Restore Compatibility Issue related to OS

AppleStore installed new HD onto my computer.  Unbeknownst to me they put on Snow Leopard.  Upon bootup at home I selected the "restore from time machine backup" option.  After 4 hours, computer rebooted with all of my logins.  Looks good, right?!
Passwords are ignored.  Apparently, the issue relates to the fact that my data back up is based upon my "old" Mountain Lion OS from the previous HD.
Call into Applestore and they were clueless how to resolve and they had me contact AppleCare.  Spoke with tech who ultimately put me on with a "senior tech"  I have a single 10.6 disk as well as a single 10.6.2 disk.  I think the HD is running 10.6.7or 10.6.8.  I do NOT have a bootable disk (only the single install).  She was stumped, put me on hold for atleast 10 minutes when the line went dead.  (She verified my return number twice).  I haven't heard back and am very frustrated.
I feel like I'm in an Apple Catch-22.
    Please, any advice?

Follow these instructions for reinstall 10.6, you will need to erase the ENTIRE drive by selecting the drive makers name and size on the left while booted from the 10.6 disk that came with your machine as this is the machine specific version with your free iLife included.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If you use the white 10.6 disk, (it's 10.6.3) then that doesn't have the free iLife, but if you later purchased it from AppStore it can be redownloaded when you get to 10.8 again.
(ideally that older machine should stick with 10.6.8, but you have your files already in 10.8 on the TM drive, so...)
Make sure you erase the entire drive with the Security Erase Zero All Data option, this will "pre-map" off any potentially failing sectors on the drive before they fail with your data on it, it makes your machine a lot more reliable.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Once that's all done, log in and setup with your same user name as before (important) and Software Update to 10.6.8, log into AppStore and hold the option key down and click on Purchases, redownload 10.8 and install.
Revisit and redownload other software like iLife etc.
Use the TM drive to bring back copies of your files into their respective folders.
Reboot the Mac holding the command and r keys down, use Terminal and enter resetpassword, a window appears, select your boot volume and user, then reset ACL's, should fix your user permissions issue.
Note: What the AppleStore should have done is installed the 10.8 Recovery HD on your new drive, then you could have just reinstalled 10.8 from that.

  • Macbook failed to boot after time machine restore

I changed my macbook HDD, inserted the Snow Loepard DVD and do a time machine full restore.
After the Restore OK message my macbook reboot, have the black screen with the spinning thing, then a blue screen, then i see in a flash the Snow Leopard wallpaper and then back to the blue screen with the spinning thing and it stays there.
Dont really know what to do now.

Erase the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard, then restore the Home folder, third-party applications, etc. from your TM backup. For more help with TM I suggest reading the user tips: User Tips for Time Machine. You can also select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to get the online help.
